She was previously believed to be Grace MAKIN, sister of Joam Makin who married his cousin Edmund. TTS-20 and many earlier researchers listed her that way. Extensive research by noted Genealogist Michael J. WOOD, with findings published in the April 1987 issue of The American Genealogist, conclude that she was Grace RAVENS.

Diane Stevenson wrote - 10Mar04:
John, born in Dedham in 1613, was admitted a freeman in New England in 1637. He was also a selectman many times, a land surveyor, town clerk and representative in 1651, 53, 63. He was a captain in Ye Frayned Band in 1680 and steward of Harvard College in 1662. He had two wives. The first was Martha Porter, daughter of Robert and Grace Porter. He married her in 1637, the same year he was admitted a freeman. It appears they had a son John, because he was born in 1638, the year after their marriage. His second wife was Grace Palmer, widow of William Palmer. They married in Water town, and she died on Feb 7, 1700. The history of Harvard confirms these two wives. However, I have a list of his children altogether and can't tell which ones had which mother. At any rate, his son Joseph, born on

I can confirm the two wives, but it will take awhile to retrieve that information. I had a friend in Cambridge research this, actually, about 2-3 years ago because I was hoping my son might qualify for some distant legacy scholarship. She came to a dead end at a certain point, because the lines split and it wasn't possible to tell which children belonged to which wife--or something like that (my memory of this is rather foggy--that's why I hoped you might know). Unfortunately, I don't remember what sources she used, but I might be able to contact her to find out. As I recall, however, she did verify the names of the wives.May 14, 1650 is my direct ancestor.

Jonathan Ray and Elizabeth Askew Family
A written account of this family was published in the Conservative in 19 01 and by people who knew the family so it seems fitting that it be republ ished as it was written with a few dates added.
Jonathan married Elizabeth ASKEW, daughter of William ASKEW and Louisa ASK EW, on 21 Jan 1823 in , Lawrence, Mississippi. Elizabeth was born 13 Mar 1 807 in Georgia. She died 8 Jan 1873 in Carroll Co., Mississippi.
"Another pioneer Jonathan Ray [1803-1845], settled north of where Carrollt on now stands in 1832. Like others of the grand men who contributed so mu ch to open and develop the country, Jonathan Ray and family met the duti es of life in a new country bravely. His sons and daughters grew up to man hood and womanhood and in their turn made homes among the hills and ferti le valleys of North Carroll.
The oldest son, William [1825-1909], before he was grown, longed for a dif ferent style and manner of life and went to Williams Landing to clerk f or McConnell. Here he learned something of the mercantile business and beg an to develop those sterling traits of character that enabled him to ta ke a stand among the leading business men of the county. In a few yea rs he sold his business at Greenwood and removed to Carrollton. From th at early day to the present (1901) he has conducted this business at Carro llton without interruption--except during the four years of war. In 186 2, William Ray enlisted in a company which was assigned to duty in the 30 th Mississippi Regiment of Infantry. He was chosen First Lieutenant of t he company and soon afterwards, when his captain Irvin Scales was chosen L ieutenant Colonel of the Regiment, of Infantry. He was chosen First Lieute nant of the company and soon afterwards, when his Captain Irvin Scales w as chosen Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment, he became Captain. He took p art in some of the seven battles in which General Bragg's army was engag ed and was captured and confined on Johnson's Island until the close of t he war.
Of his brothers, Joseph [1830-1919], John [1824-1864], Wilson [1837- ], Je sse [1834-], Henry [1832-1872] and Robert [1839-1885] grew to manhood a nd all except Robert married and had interesting families. All took pa rt in the war except John who was a miller and as such was exempt from ser vice. In a private difficulty he killed a Captain Campbell and in turn w as killed by a brother of Campbell's in 1864.
The Rays young and old have been esteemed highly in the state wherever th ey went. They were true friends, loyal citizens, honest business men and c onscientious Christians. They met every duty as became the true and brav e. Captain William Ray was married three times, his wives being sisters, d aughters of Henry B. Latham who lived in the eastern part of the county. H enry Ray studied for the ministry and did most of his pastoral work in Ken tucky. Joseph married a daughter [Sarah Catherine] of Samuel Stanford a nd has spent his young manhood and middle life in the county and now he a nd his good wife are living quietly, enjoying the evening time of a well s pent honorable life. Wilson removed to Sunflower after the war and after o pening up a good tract of land, making a comfortable home for his famil y, died there. Jesse died near Carrollton in young manhood, leaving two ch ildren who removed from the county in 1887 or 1888. Robert gave four yea rs of faithful service to his country and although wounded a time or tw o, returned after the surrender and began life anew in Carrollton. He w as a great sufferer for several years before he died with rheumatism. Am id all the trials and sufferings he was patient, humble, hoping for fin al relief, which hadn't came until death claimed him. The two sisters of t he family married and lived in the county. The elder [Louiza] married Gre en Carpenter and they lived east of Carrollton, respected by all who kn ew them. The younger sister, Julia married C.[A.] B. Wadlington and they t oo lived east of Carrollton."
It is important to note a couple of discrepancies in the above article. >F rom court probate records we know that when Jonathan died in 1845, John w as the oldest son and James Madison was also a son of Jonathan's.

It's presently only educated speculation by genealogist Robert Gerrity <yankeeancestry@hotmail.com> that Col. Matthew Ray was the son of this couple. He could also have been the son of Hannah Flood's sister Sarah, and/or one of the unnamed sons of James Ray. Research is ongoing regarding the pre-1820 Ray families in Hancock County, ME and I welcome input from interested persons.

Father: Robert Ray Mother: Adah Wormwood

Noted events in his life were:
1. Census 21, 1850 - Surry, Hancock, ME U. S. A.
2. Occupation 21, laborer, 1850 - Surry, Hancock, ME U. S. A.
The 1850 Census lists the value of his real estate as $350.
3. Residence 22, 1850 - Surry, Hancock, ME U. S. A.
The 1850 Census lists him as living with his wife Mary in Surry. His real estate is valued at $350.
4. Census 23, 1860 - Surry, Hancock, ME U. S. A.
5. Occupation 23, joiner, 1860 - Surry, Hancock, ME U. S. A.
6. Residence 23, 1860 - Surry, Hancock, ME U. S. A.
The 1860 Census lists the value of his personal estate as $100.
7. Census 24, 1870 - Surry, Hancock, ME U. S. A.
8. Occupation 24, shoemaker, 1870 - Surry, Hancock, ME U. S. A.
9. Residence 24, 1870 - Surry, Hancock, ME U. S. A.
The 1870 Census lists Anna Ray, age 26, and Frank Ray, age 4, as living with him. Anna could be a daughter or a daughter-in-law, if not a wife. Frank could then be either a son or a grandson. However, previous wife Mary's approximate date of birth from the 1850 Census is 1833, which would make her too young to be Anna's mother. As well, first son George Willis was 19 at that time, and presumably too young to have a four year old son himself. Therefore, it seems most likely that Anna is Nathaniel M. Ray's third wife, and Frank is his son.

This is a mystery. The 1850 Census lists a Robert Ray having been born in "Ireland." But would he have been working as a millman, away from home, at age 78? Could this be another Robert Ray? (His age in the 1850 Census is given as 40.) The only other Robert Ray listed in ME in the 1850 Census is a 67 year old English millwright, living with his family in Lubec.

Birth Notes: Husband - Robert Ray
It's not known that he's the son of this hypothetical couple. He could also be the son of James Ray. In fact, James Ray could also be the unknown husband of Molly Flood, since her husband's name is also unknown.
If he is the same Robert Ray as listed as a millman in Franklin, ME in the 1850 Census, then he was born in Ireland and isn't necessarily related to the Hancock County Ray family. But I think this is an unlikely scenario.
My own instincts are that he's the son of James Ray who, along with his brother Matthew, were the two original Ray settlers on the Union River in the late 1700s. However, he could also be another younger relative who joined Matthew and James Ray sometime before 1807, when his marriage to Adah Wormword was recorded. No Robert Ray is listed as "head of household" in either the 1800 or 1790 Census returns for Hancock County, ME. He could even be a younger brother of Matthew and James Ray.

from Holly Hendricks:
"Robert Ray died in Surry, ME on 14 July 1852. His children born between 1807-1831 include Susannah, Henry Jarvis, Mary W., Phebe W., Jane, Hutchinson Ingalls, Nathaniel M., Elmira J., Nancy W., Jesse M., Adaline D. Archibald Hoyt, Frederick J., and William Augustus, all born in Maine. He and Matthew Ray (who came to Surry in 1794 and probably descends from the Nantucket family of Samuel through John Ray and Mary Patten) were among the early settlers of Surry. I believe they might have been cousins. Matthew was later a sea captain of the Schooner "Hope." James Ray also was an early Surry settler and had a lot next to Robert Ray. I believe James was Matthew's brother."

Note: There is no evidence that the Ray family of Surry, ME descended from Samuel Ray of Nantucket, MA.

Birth Notes: Wife - Adah Wormwood
Her identity is not completely certain, but I speculate the reality can be found within the information below, provided by Max Brenninkmeyer <maxbrenn@nemaine.com> on 10 Jul 1999:
Benjamin Wormwood 1793-1876 son of Joseph and Mary (Hall) Wormwood m. Sarah
Smith 1792-1874 dau of John and Polly (Milliken) Smith. Benjamin seem to have dropped the "Worm" from Wormwood and is known as plain Wood.
Benjamin's sister Adah 1786-1852 m. Robert Ray 1772-1852.
Benjamin & Adah Wormwood/Wood d. Jane 1814-? m. 1838 Benjamin Smith 1812-1869 son of Benjamin & Susanna (Flood) Smith.

Birth Notes: Child - Jesse M. Ray
"Jesse M. Ray, a well-to-do and respected resident of Surry, Hancock County, was born in this town, August 17, 1824, son of Robert and Edith (Wormwood) Ray. Robert Ray, who was born and reared in one of the coast towns of Maine, after his marriage settled in Surry, which was then in its earliest stage of development. Having bought a tract of unbroken land on the Shore Road, he cleared a part of it, and for a time tilled the soil. He subsequently sold the property, and purchased land on the Bay Road, on which he was engaged in general farming and lumbering until his death, at the advanced age of seventy-nine years. His wife died at the homestead, in the sixty-sixth year of her age. Their family included fourteen children, namely: Susan and Henry, deceased; Mary, who first married the late Jacob Lord, and is now the wife to Philip Brown, of Surry; Phoebe, the wife of Philip Milliken, of Surry; Jane, Ingalls, Nathaniel, Almira, and Nancy deceased; Jesse M., the subject of this sketch; Adeline, deceased; Archibald, a resident of Massachusetts; and Frederick and Augustus, twins, who live in California.
Making the most of the educational advantages offered him at the district school, Jesse M. Ray obtained a good knowledge of the subjects there taught. Having a natural aptitude of mechanical pursuits, he afterward learned the trade of house and ship carpenter, and followed it in this locality for many years. Skilful in the use of tools, he was kept busily employed during his days of activity, and made carpentering and joining the chief occupation through life, although he was also engaged in trade for a time. A few years ago he built a fine residence in the village, where he and his family have since resided.
In politics Mr. Ray has been a faithful supporter of the Republican party since its formation. His first Presidential vote, cast in 1848, was given to Zachary Taylor. During one tern he represented his district in the legislature, and he was Town Treasurer for nine years and Collector of Taxes for three years. His religious belief brings him into fellowship with the Methodist Episcopal church, with which he united several years ago. In 1848 he married Miss Jane H. Milliken, a daughter of the late James Milliken and a sister of Henry J. of whom a brief sketch appears elsewhere in this work. The only child born of their union, Emily J., died at the ate of eighteen years."

"The deceased was one of the best known of the country town business m en in the State of Utah. He was born in Mississippi in 1848 and came to U tah with his parents in 1852.
