An old letter written by Susan Chamberlain Marden to her son Frank says the Benjamin N. Marden was a builder & contractor. He lived in the old Marden place on Lafette Rd. The letter also says the Benjamin & his "second wife" are bur. there" in one corner of a large field on you father's farm" in a little fenced graveyard. He worked on the Knox & Lincoln R.R. 1863. He also worked on a ledge 18mos. and had to give up in New Castle, Me. near Darmariscotta. Later another contractor finished the work. On of Benjamin's last jobs was working on the County Court House & jail in Auburn, Me.
He died when his son Frank D. was 8yrs old.

Mentioned in his fathers will (1698) when he received John Marden's-1 "right in the woods that I bought and paid for". James was a cordwainer and is listed with his fa. as inhabit. of New Castle on tax lists for 1693.
A reliable Rye correspondent believes that James-2 ran the ferry to new Castle where the bridge now is to Wentworth-by-the Sea. no documented evidence of this seen, but his son Stephen had the ferry privilege. See ref. to "James Marden's old Grant" near Odiorne's in 1732/3 deed to Stephen Marden which may place James-2 at the ferry.
Feb. 27, 1695/6
James and Thomas Marden both served on an Inquest Jury, when "William Grills and George Major driven ashore by stress of weather and drowned.
July 1696
He appears on a list of "The Inhabitants of New Castle sworn July 1696". Received a grant of 20ac. of land in new Castle 1698/9, where he had built. His name as "James Mardin" is on the tax list for Sandy Beach 1698. Sandy Beach was then still a part of new Castle.
Feb 25, 1706/7
He witnessed (by mark) the will of Samuel Rand of New Castle. Adm. on the Est. of Samuel Rand was gr. to his widow Susanna Rand, Jul. 1, 1707, and James Marden, of New Castle, yeoman, was one of her bondsmen.
Samuel Rand-2 (Francis-1) was a bro. of John Rand-2 of Oyster River. John-2 was fa. of Nathaniel Rand-3 who m. Elizabeth Marden-2, sister of James Marden-2, so Samuel Rand-2 was an uncle of Nathaniel Rand-3, James Marden's-2 bro.-in-law.
1708
James Marden was taxed, New Castle, for 1.2.0lbs, in the division of taxes "for Constable Goss to Collect".

Adds a dau. Abigail to the list of ch. of James Marden-2 and says she m. 1st George Foss & 2nd Nathaniel Drake. The writer has not found any other ref. to support this.

James 3 Marden
1718
Samuel Berry relinquished the James 2 Marden farm to the eldest son James-3. James-3 & Judith (Bates) Marden were lifelong residents of rye, N.H. he owned land in Barrington, Eps. and Ex. and played a part in the pioneering of those communities by making grants to his sons who became early settlers. In deeds he is variously called yeoman, husbandman, gentleman, & in on ref. "wheelwright".
May 18, 1727
The town of Epsom, N.H. received its charter, and was granted to "proportion of the grantees were from Rye, & a section of Eps. is known as new Rye today. The grants were make according to the amount of a proprietor's taxes.
May 20, 1727
Chichester was made a town, and boundary disputes bet. the two new towns were settled Mar. 1810. The first meeting of Eps. proprietors was held Nov. 20, 1727 at the ferry house in New Castle.
Jan. 1729
Lots (20) of 50ac each were laid out on "East St." in Eps. The were drawn by lot June 12, 1732 at a Proprietor's meeting held at the home of Daniel Lunt in Greenland. James Marden of Rye drew Lot. #20. Orig, Eps. Town. Rec. says James Marden was on committee laying out Eps. land grants, 1732. There were no meetings for officers until 1743. town affairs from 1727 - 1750 were covered by the proprietors' meetings in New Castle and Pts. Renewed Indian hostilities deferred the actual settlement of the town.

James son Nathan-4 was a pioneer settler in Epsom. N.H. 1728/29
Alexander Sims of Rye deeded to James Marden twenty acres of land, original rt. of Joseph Jackson. James Marden's son William, & grandson James, who M. Polly Jenness, occupied the farm, then his son, William, & at present (1905) the latter's son, Levi W. & grandson Wilbur L. Marden reside on the homestead." This is the house at 383 Washington Rd., Rye. The present house is very old but is at least the second house on the site. Whether James3-8 lived on the land at 383 Washington Rd., or remained on the unlocated farm he inherited in 1718 is not known. The provision in his will where he left his son William-4 all his land and marsh and buildings might well refer to this land. As it is known that William-4 lived at 383, perhaps James-3 did also. Could the land he purchased in 1728/29 (deed says 2 1/2ac) have adjoined his original farmland inherited in 1718, thereby making the larger piece of property? (Parsons calls it 20ac) The farm was taxed to William-4 in 1776/78 James-3 d. 1777. They were perhaps living together?

Rye corresp. (RBM) sent the following:
"Stephen Marden & Elizabeth Rand M. Feb. 1757 by Rev. Samuel Parsons." Could this be a 2nd mar. for the Stephen?
The mar. March 17, 1762 of Daniel & Abigail 4 (Marden) Philbrick was performed by Rev. John Tucke in Epsom, N.H. She might have been m. from her sis, Hannah 4 (Marden) Dolbeer's home? Could this indicate that their mo. Charity was d. and that the 1757 mar. was of their fa. Stephen-3 to a 2nd wife? Might Stephen of Candia be a ch. of that 2nd mar.?

The History of Rye, p.447, has Rachel Marden, daughter of James and Abigail (webster) Marden as marrying Job Chapman. Deeds

Feb 27, 1695/6
Thomas "Marden" served, as did "James Marden" on an inquest jury. He is listed in the division with Fosses, Berrys, and James Marden-2 in 1696 for taxes.
(Inhabitants of New Castle weorn July 1696). He was prob. older than John Marden-2 as John-2 was not yet listed July 1696, but his bros. James-2 and Thomas-2 were.
June 10, 1696
Thomas Marden 30 days at 12d. 1697. Alcott: of work by the soldiers at fort William & Mary at ye brest work at little Harbour.
Presumably he was the husband of Sarah O'Shaw. In petition and division of the Est. of Mr. Daniel O'Shaw June ye 20, 1715 the heirs were: John O'Shaw, James O'Shaw, "Ruben" Mace, Cathrine O'Shaw, Wm Somers, Henry Treddeck, Edward Hales and Sarah Marden (who signed by mark). "Katherine" is identified as "an infirm sister" of John O'Shaw. Reuben Mace, Wm Somers, Henry Treddeck and Edward hales were all sons-in-law of Daniel signing for their wives' shares in the O'Shaw Est. This leaves the only married O'Shaw dau. signing (by mark) for her own share to be Sarah Marden. This evidence, together with Thomas' absence from written rec. after 1697 (He is not given in the tax lists of 1698) seems to indicate that he d.c.1697, and may very likely have left no heirs other than his widow who was living in 1715. He is not mentioned in his fa.'s will written in 1698, nor his mo.'s of 1706/7.
Thomas-2 early d. in c. 1697 might have prompted John-1 to write his will in 1698 and in it he makes no provision for any ch. of Thomas-2. Neither does he provide for the known grson Samuel Conner, but Samuel's par. were prob. living in 1698.
Libby/Noyes, P. 458
Places Thomas-3 (who m. 1729 Mary Smith) as a poss. son of Thomas-2. He may be correct. Parsons' HIST. OF RYE calls Thomas-3 a son of James-2 with no question. This, too, may be correct. There is no doc. proof that Thomas-2 was a son of John-1, nor is there proof of the parentage of Thomas-3 other than parsons. The writer believes the first assumption of Thomas-2 as son of John-1 is well taken and not really open to much question. Whether Thomas-3 is a son of James-2 is open to question. However, as Thomas-2 evidently d. so young; and as John-1 made no provision for any orphaned grch.; and as the wording of Samuel Berry-3 settlement with James-2 eldest son James-3 implies more ch. than those named, the writer inclines to place Thomas-3 as a son of James-2 as does Parsons. it does see certain that he was, at any rate, a grson of John-1.
At some place in this work the writer wishes to mention "the Marden nose", a long thin nose with slightly raised bridge. While this ref. should perhaps be taken lightly and in humorous vein, possession of the "Marden nose" is a serious matter. The writer is among those so blessed and has met a great many Marden descendants on all lines including those from Thomas-3 who share this feature. It occurs often enough to warrant notice as something we may all have inherited from John-1, and is a minor factor in our feeling very certain that Thomas-3 belongs among us even though his exact connection with John-1 is missing.
Libby/Noyes also says the Mary Marden who was in Court 1725, Pts., might be a dau. of Thomas-2, but says she might also be Mary, bp. 1709, dau. of John Marden-2 the mast liner. there is no real evidence that Thomas Marden-2 had any ch.
General Notes: Child - Ebenezer Marden
Rye. corresp. (Robert Berry Marden) writes:
Ebenezer was the first settler on the Marden homestead at 277 Washington Rd. Rye and purchased from Joshua Rand for 20lb in 1735 his dwelling house, which he moved to the site of the present house which Robert Berry Marden owns. The present house is the third on the site. My place in Rye was purchased by Ebenezer Marden in 1735 from his father-in-law Nathaniel Berry .. he later purchased additional land from widow O'Shaw of Durham .. In 1777 when parsons prints tax list (p.141) it was owned by Nathaniel Marden Jr. .. with Richard Webster ..across the road."

Israel was killed by an explosion. A charge of powder was drilled out on Lafayette Rd. and an accident occurred. The early fuses used in construction blasting were very unreliable and made this type of work very dangerous.

Stephen moved to Chester, N.H.
Dea. John 5 Marden says:
My father died being killed by the fall of a tree in the town of New Hampton in the county of Strafford, N.H. on the 19th day of June 1781 and was buried at Centre harbor at the head of the Winnippasagee lake, about 60 miles from his home in Chester, N.H. He was about 44 years of age. In 1790 Josiah my oldest brother moved his mother Elizabeth and the younger part of the family to Canterbury two miles north of Shaker Village where she spent the remainder of her days in comfortable circumstances.
Dea. John5 of Palermo, Me. tells of the widow's hardships in raising her family. It was during the rev. and even in the best of conditions life was difficult.
When Stephen was killed he left his wife, & large fam. of ch. A posthumous son was b. in Sep. 1781 to the widow Elizabeth WEBSTER Marden.
Sephen Marden had served at fort William and henry in garrisoning the Fort May-Oct. 1757 during the last of the French and Indian Wars. he went in a company sent from Chester, from the part of Old Chester called Freetown. Among A.M. Goodwin papers at the Univ. of Me. Lib. is an old paper saying that Stephen Marden was among the N.H. soldiers fortunate enough to escape the massacre at Fort William and Henry in 1757 when the surrendering British and American soldiers were set upon by the Indians whom Montcalm could not control. There were c. 200 N.H. men there and about 80 of them were killed.
Mar. 1, 1763
Stephen Marden signed the petition in Raymond for their incorporation as a town.

He lived on lot no. 14,2d div. where "Thomas Fernald once lived and where Thomas Lane now lives. His widow was taced in 1785 in Chester.

Stephen Marden Jr. made covenant with Rye Church.
Stephen4 Marden's trade of "Joiner" is evident from the tools, chair frames, and sundry chests and tables.

General Notes: Child - Abigail Marden
Death listed as Abigail Marden in copy from fam. Bible.
One corresp. however had a note that "Abigail Bayley d. Jan. 22, 1798."
Did Abigail marry?
Or could she be the Abigail Marden who m. Samuel Rand Jr.?
Note that Benjamin5-60 Marden brought up a girl named Luch Bagley. Could she have been his niece?
General Notes: Child - Josiah Marden
When his father was killed by a falling tree in 1781, Josiah was the eldest of the sons in the family, and certainly his mother (Elizabeth Webster/Marden) must have relied heavily upon the fifteen year old boy to help her to support the large family. Josiah moved to Canterbury.
His brothers has all by that time moved to Maine. When Josiah went to Northfield it was a pioneer community, and there he built a small house which he later enlarged.
General Notes: Child - Elizabeth Marden
Lived in Canterbury until 1820, when removed to Middleton. Home was sold to Shader colony & moved to their community where it was used as the house where candidates resided temporarily. Cellar hole of Moore home may still be seen on NE corner of lot 109 North of the Shakers high on the hill with a fine view to the west.
General Notes: Child - Stephen Marden
The 3 Marden brothers, Stephen, John, & Benjamin all moved to Palermo, Me. from Chester, N.H. Stephen went there about 1793 and settled on what became Marden Hill in Palermo.
Stephen, John & Benjamin owned three farms adjoining each other on the top of Marden Hill.
One account says that Stephen moved to Palermo in 1788. Another says he moved into his log house on Marden Hill, with his new bride in Jan. 1793. As he and Abigail were married Jan. 1, 1793, in Chester, N.H. It seems logical that he had made an earlier stay in Palermo, clearing the land and building his log cabin. Their oldest son was born in the log house in Oct. 1793. Later Stephen built a frame house on the same site. He cleared land and planted an orchard to the east of his house.
Hist. of Palermo:
Says the the first wagon in Palermo was owned by Deacon Stephen Marden about 1815. The brothers built a mill on the Benjamin Marden farm which used an up and down saw (the first sawmill in the part of town). The site of the mill may be seen from the old dam.
The Hist. also tells how the iron work of the water well for the mill was made in N.H. and brought to Augusta. From there it was hauled by tow men through the forests to Palermo, on a hand sled, about thirty miles. The trails were marked by blazed trees, and the route from Augusta lead up the Kennebec River to Vassalboro, then to E. Vassalboro, and around the south edge of China Lake, thence to Dirigo and to Branch Mills. The Marden brothers made hand rakes at their mill. They also had a brick yard, one of the earliest in the community. The early chimneys were laid up in clay and ashes for mortar. The mill passed to Benjamin Marden 2nd and to his son Stephen who continued to run it.
Marden Hill was the highest point in the neighborhood and there was a muster field there. At the first town meeting in Palermo, Dec. 30,1804, Stephen Marden was chosen Collector and Constable.
Jan 9, 1805
He was chosen Warden and a member of the School Committee. His barn was often used for meetings. He was a Highway Surveyor 1804-5; Tithing man 1806;
May 8, 1810
Representative to the Massachusetts General Court. Selectman 1813-14; Captain of the Militia who drilled on the Muster Ground; Grand Juror 1809, Court of Common Pleas held at Wiscassett; Hogreave 1805; Committee of the North District 1813; Deacon and Chruch Clerk.
Having attended meeting at the center schoolhouse Sunday evening before. He sang and prayed and spoke as though inspired by above and died at five o'clock before daylight. He lived on the old muster grounds.
Certainly New Englanders can be proud of their early and continued interest in education. Each new town to be settled began at once the basic tasks, of road building, and of meeting house and school construction. In so many of these early towns we find Mardens putting in their service as members of early school committees, or committees to select and call a pastor, just as did most of the serious, hard-working pioneers.

General Notes: Child - John Marden
John came to Palermo, Me. in Jan. 1793 when he was only 14yrs, with his brother Deacon Stephen Marden who took up a farm on what is now known as Marden Hill. He made his home with Stephen for 8yrs, and then he settled on the adjoining farm, building a log house and a barn. Their brother Benj. took up a farm joining theirs on the west. John was a Deacon of the First Baptist Church for many years. He told some of the recollection of his early life in Palermo in the history of the town.
After Mary's death he gave his son Hiram to Josiah Perkins who brought him up. Josiah had no children and left his property to Hiram.
Dea. John Marden recalled his trips back to NH as a young man to visit relatives and friends, when he made the long journey by foot, a distance of 220 mi. About 1800 the brothers Stephen and John built the saw mill & turning mill. John sold his interest (1/10) in the turning machine on Sep. 19, 1831 for five dollars.
I John Marden, was born in the Town of Chester, in the County of rockingham and the State of new Hampshire. When i was in my third year my father was killed by the falling of a tree in the Town of Now Hampton, and county of Strafford, NH, on the nineteenth day of June 1781. He was 44yrs of age. My mother was left a widow in poor circumstances, with the care of eight children, and one added to that number on the twenty-ninth of September following it being in the time of the Revolutionary was she had many hardships to encounter, having but little but her hands and good economy to support her family, yet she bore her trouble with a good degree of Christion patience.
1779
Brother Stephen Belden came to Great Pond Settlement, bringing his Bible under his arm. As the settlers increased in numbers and a Baptist Church being formed at Fairfax (now Albion) many of the vicinity united with that body.
1783
A treaty of peace was signed between the United States and Great Britain, which gave her some relief.
1790
My eldest brother moved her and the younger part of the family to the town of Canterbury, where she spent the remainder of her life in comfortable circumstances to the day of her death, which was on the third day of November, 1830, aged about ninety-one years.
January, 1793
I came into the district of Maine, at the age of fourteen years. --in the County of Lincoln (now Waldo) and took up my residence at a place called the Great Pond Settlement at the extremity of the Sheep scot Pond.
I had may hardships to encounter being the only youth in the place. The nearest mill was twelve miles, through a lonely wood, with but little better than a footpath and spotted trees. Yet with pleasing prospects I looked forward to the time when this good land would be settled.
When school houses and mills would be built and roads made, and this wilderness would become a fruitful field. i took great pleasure in visiting my friends in NH once in every three years, although I had to travel the distance of two hundred and twenty miles on the frozen ground in the month of November or December. i worked with my brother, Stephen Marden, until I was twenty-two years of age, when I bought the farm on which I now live, with the barn then built and a log house thereon.
About 1800
My grandfather and his brothers, Stephen and Benjamin built the old mill on the Benjamin Marden farm, which was an up and down saw. The iron work of the water-wheel was made in New Hampshire, and brought to Augusta. From Augusta it was hauled on a hand sled by two men, at that time & distance of about thirty miles through the wilderness by spotted trees. This mill had the necessary machinery for making hand rakes, which the Marden brothers sold for twenty-five cents each. They also had a brickyard and made bricks, which supplied the houses with their first brick chimneys. They were laid tip in clay and ashes for morter. Later the property passed to Benjamin Marden, 2nd and to his son Stephen, who operated the mill. They have all passed away now except Stephen's widow and two sons, Oscar & Frank.
April 23, 1801
I was united in marriage with Mary Bagley of Liberty, and moved on to the farm that spring with a pleasing prospect of enjoying happiness. For three of four years we were favored with good health and our crops came in bountifully and all thing bespoke prosperity.
1804
A reformation wept this township. Those of our members withdrew from that Fairfax church and organized the First Baptist Church established.
Jan. 22, 1805
I was severely wounded by the falling of a tree. Then my sufferings were very great. yet my mind was happy in the Lord, and I could truly say, "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in Him."My father had been killed in a similar accident in 1781.
(He had been working for his brother Stephen on Marden Hill on the side hill in the pasture next to the field. Stephen had just gone to the house with a load of wood when the tree fell & caught John by the leg and held him until Stephen returned for another load.)
Feb. 3, 1805
I had my left leg amputated above the knee, which was very expensive at the time, so that my future prospects of happiness in this world began to decay.
In April following, we chose our town officers for the first time. i took a part with them in collecting taxes and serving precepts, etc. This year with the past will long be remembered as a season of great religious excitement in This town and vicinity. A Baptist Church was organized that season and many were added thereto. I was baptized and added to the church at the next August conference.
July 20, 1805
Election of officers. Meetings were held at Josiah Perkin's house and John Marden's barn, on Marden Hill. Chose John Robinson of Freedom, first clerk; John Sinclare of Kuox, first deacon; Nathaniel Robinson, first pastor, ordained June 26.
Members were received from Freedom, Montville and Know. thus it became necessary to build a meeting house and a plan for the structure was drawn by Daniel Sylvester Sr., showing the design and location of the pews. these pews were sold from the plan at value, which sold for 25 and 50 dollars each, according to choice. Thus about 1200 dollars and completed in 1827 and dedicated on New Years day, 1828, which was thronged with people each Sabbath.
Sept. 10, 1805
My companion was taken sick and died on the sixteenth with rash and putrid w/fever -- aged about twenty-two. My little son died on the twenty-first, aged three and a half years. I had two children left to the mercies of the people. A daughter, Eliza, two years old and a little son, Hiram, six days old. Then was my house left to me desolate and everything of this world's was clothed in gloom. All my future prospects gone and the lonely graveyard was the pleasantness place that I could visit.
I could truly say with the Psalmist:
"Had not thy word been my delight
When earthly joys were fled,
My soul oppressed with sorrows weight
Had sunk among the dead."
I was then led to put my trust in the Lord and since that time I have witnessed much of his goodness.
I disposed of my children where they were nursed with tenderness and care. I left my house and attended to my business in Town that fall. In the winter I went to New Hampshire to visit my friends. I returned in the spring and finished my collecting and engaged in Town business again.
1805
I let out my farm to elder Robinson and Dr. Pratt with little expectation to pay the bills and save the farm. i earned what I could. I found I had many friends to encourage me and made me some presents. I was encourage to try and pay the bills and save the farm.. This season I formed an acquaintance with Mrs. Eunice Ward of Harlem (now china) which was left a widow about the same time -- and near the same age, with three children, two daughters and a son, the eldest six years and the youngest seventeen months, with about seven or eight hundred dollars worth of property for their support. She was a professor of religion and a member of the Baptist Church in Harlem. We were united in marriage on the twenty-forth day of august, 1806, and moved home an commenced keeping house that fall. She assisted me to pay the bills and stock the farm. I was encouraged to pursed a course of farming for a living and attend to Town business and such labor as I could do. Soon after this I was chosen Town Clerk and kept the records, which was continued about seven years. having the company and assistance of a prudent and industrious companion I have enjoyed much peace of mind for many years and have witnessed much of the goodness of the Lord. We were members of the First Baptist Church in Palermo forty-five years. We took much satisfaction with our Christian friends both in prosperity and in adversity.
1809
On the first Wednesday of February the 2nd Baptist Church, near Longfellow's Corner was organized having withdrawn from the 1st Baptist Church.
1811
Eli Carr was born in Goffstown, N. II., in 1806. He came to Palermo with his father, Richey Carr, who settled on Marden Hill. He is now one of the oldest men in town being ninety years of age. His mind is clear and he can remember the most of those first settlers and can tell where they lived. He is a respected citizen and a worthy member of the First Baptist Church, and to him much credit is due for his assistance in preparing this record of Palermo.
About 1812
There was a girst mill owned by John Black, which was built about 1800. It stood on the same dam that Ira Black's saw mill did and was carried away in a freshet.
March 1819
The first building burned no record was the barn of Andrew Bonney, together with a large stock of cattle.
April 14, 1819
A vote was passed, instructing the selectmen to sign a petition in behalf of the town asking the Legislature to compensate his loss.
1822
The first store and traders in town, as far a I can ascertain, was Burrill & Benson, who traded at Greeley's corner, and Joseph Arnold at Carr's corner. Before this the people went to Belfast and Wiscasset to do their shopping, and Wiscasset was the nearest Post Office.
1823
The first tilde boards were made by Joseph Creasey. The town paid him eighty-three cents each, for making. They were painted and lettered with a hand pointing the distance towards the principal places and have gone to decay years ago.
1827
The took the plan of the first meeting-house and began the erection of the old church now removed. The 2nd Baptist Church records were destroyed by fire many years ago.
1830
The Methodist Church was organized. Camp-meetings were held in Dr. Eli Ayer's Grove for many years. The Meeting-house was built in 1861.
1844
It was voted to build a town house. The contract was let to John Erskine for one hundred and eighteen dollars. A quarrel began about the location. The south part of the town carried the day and it was built on Orchard Greeley's land near the cemetery: A warm battle ensued and it was sold at auction for sixty-five dollars. Again the south part ruled and bought back by paying the interest. Several meetings were held there during the nest year. Still the battle went on and it was again sold and moved to Longfellow's corner and since used for a store.
1847
The present town house was built by Enos Greeley, and located in the center of the town.
1849
The old houses on the farms formerly occupied by these Marden brothers were removed and new ones built by Joshua Goodwin, Alva Marden & Benjamin, 2nd.
1850
My companion was sick, and died Feb 28, 1851, aged seventy years and four month. We had none children. For a few years past I have witnessed much what I read in the twelfth chapter of Ecclesiastes of the aged. "Yet God is the strength of my heart. Although he cause grief yet he will have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.
He has been my friend and protector in youth and middle age, and I trust he well not forsake me when my strength falls. Therefore will I trust in Him as long as I live."
Where I reside is about twenty mile northeasterly of Augusta, then called (Fort Weston). The inhabitants east and north of my residence were but few at that time. Several small settlements were made in the woods, and generally called after the first settler or by an old Indian name of the ponds or streams. The land was very good for crops of corn and rye. each settler made heir choice for a farm. No taxes were called for at that time. There were no framed buildings east or north of my residence for the space of twelve or fifteen mile and three or four miles to the south and west until the next April, 1793, when two barn frames were put up, to the great joy of the settlers, but more so to the owners. After about ten years Townships were laid out, and petitions were sent to Massachusetts for incorporation, which were readily granted. then school houses were built and roads were made.
Then this wilderness began to bud and blossom like a rose and soon became a fruitful field. In the year 1820, this district was admitted into the Union with the other States, by the name of Maine, to the great joy of the inhabitants. Now while I am writing, the increasing wealth and population of Maine leads my mind back to the days of my youth, when the settlers were all laboring men, engaged in their several occupations, such as clearing land, raising crops, putting up buildings and fences in the summer and fall. In the winter and spring all engaged in lumbering, hunting and sugar making, which was much of it done in the forest at that time. These settlers were all very poor, but as "happy as clams" and a friendly to each other as monkeys.
What a change has been made since my acquaintance no further abroad than even within the County of Waldo. Then, what is now Palermo had twenty-six families; Montville and Liberty both had about twenty families and Freedom had none. Belfast village was but thinly inhabited. some parts of it was like a forest of evergreen. there was no wharf at that time. coasting vessels were loaded with cordwood by wheeling on a partly hewed stick of timber from the shore to the shop. there were but two traders in the village at my first acquaintance, namely, Na Smith and Creamer. the road from Montville to Belfast was through a forest of swamps without any bridges. the horses had to all go in one track through the swamps, with a ridge between their stepping places, to give a foot person a chance to walk over the wet places with out wading through the mud and water.
Now from here to Belfast is one of the best of stage roads, passing through among wealthy farmers, merchants and mechanics. And now Belfast is one of the pleasantness harbors that can be found on the Eastern shore. In plain view of all the shipping which sails on the Penobscot Bay, and in view of the Castine light-house, also of the level, rich and beautiful country bordering on the north-eastern shore of the beautiful bay, together with a partial view of Islsboro and Castine on the south and east, to a distance of twelve miles, which adds much to the beauty of the place. With a regular line of Steam-ships from Bangor to Boston, coming to and going from the sharves daily."
I rejoice in the prosperity of Maine, but I cannot repress the rising sigh; nor withhold the falling tear. I look around for my old contemporaries and find so few of them left. the enquiry is, where are they?
Answer, there are cut down by the seythe of time, and housed in the silent grave. And the few that are left are worn down with age and infirmities too numerous for me to name. Some with the loss of sight and gearing; some with the loss of their limbs; some with palsied hands; and others with general debility's, etc. And but very few, if any, are able to take care of themselves, but have mostly given themselves up to the care of their children, or grandchildren, or the town to provide for them. And very soon the last will be gone the way of all the earth, their bodies turned to dust, and their names forgotten, and Maine will be inhabited by entire strangers to what has passed in my day.
Now a telegraph line is erected the whole width of the State of Maine, from city to city, from new Brunswick to New Hampshire, to the length of four or five hundred miles. Again, look at the railroads that are already completer, and those that are now under way. All the above has been done in about twenty years.
Who would have thought that the stream of intemperance could have been turned and dried up by the art of man, when its width and depth was sufficient to run a mill to saw lumber to build a village as large as Unity or Freedom, so that the stream now can be forded and soon I trust will be like a rill, running under ground, and the bed of the river will soon become like a fruitful field.
Written at Palermo, June 8, 1855, at the age of 76yrs.
Signed,
JOHN MARDEN
General Notes: Child - Benjamin Marden
Was born posthumously to Stephen & Elizabeth Webster/Marden, his father having been killed June 1781 by a falling tree while lumbering. He moved to Canterbury, N.H. 1790 and to Palermo, Me. in Jan 1800 where his bros. Stephen and John had settled, taking up a farm on Marden Hill adjoining theirs.
Goodwin papers:
In 1805 Palermo voted to allow hogs to run at large in the highway provining the were ringed and yoked according to law and he was chosen and Hogreave.
Benjamin first cleared the land and settled on the farm where John Carr later lived. In 1823 he moved to the farm where William Osgood later lived. In the fall of 1826 their nephew Benjamin Marden 2nd came to live with them and in 1841 Benjamin Sr. deeded him the farm in return for their support for the remainder of life.
