!Birth-Marriage: Hills "Planters" II:64. He followed the dissenters to
Leyden, probably coming frm the locality of Great Yarmouth, England,
since he returned there. While in Leyden he was recorded as "Sayworker"
from England. In March, 1652, Stephen Tracy, Francis Cooke and others
acquired a large tract of land to the west, later called Dartmouth. These
two men had one share each in the venture. For some reason about this
time Stephen decided to leave the country. He returned to England before
1654, and signed a power of attorney in London directing his "loving
friend" John Winslow of Plymouth to dispose of his property and divide it
among his five children. [Hills II:64]

TRACY, STEPHEN- Arriving in 1623 on the Anne, Stephen Tracy had been a
say-weaver among the Separatists at Leiden, where he married Tryphosa Lee
on 6 January 1621 (Dexter, p.636). He was baptized at Great Yarmouth,
County Norfolk, on 25 December 1596, the son of Stephen and Agnes
(Erdley) Tracy (Robert S. Wakefield, "The Adventurous Tryphosa (Lee)
Tracy," and "Further on Tryphosa Tracy," TAG 51:71, 242). His wife
probably arrived on the Jacob with their daughter Sarah in 1625. Stephen
Tracy was on the 1633 freeman list, and he served on various public
committiees and juries (PCR, passim). On 7 July 1638 he hired John Price
to work for him four months (PCR 1:92). On 5 March 1638/39 he became a
constable for Duxbury (PCR 1:116). He later returned to England and was
residing at Great Yarmouth on 20 March 1654/55 when he gave a power of
attorney to Mr. John Winslow of Plymouth to dispose of his estate in New
England for the benefit of his son John Tracy, daughters Ruth Tracy and
Mary Tracy, and the rest of his five children (MD 10:143). Daughters
Sarah and Rebecca had been in the 1627 livestock division. Sarah Tracy
married George Partridge (MD 13:84). Rebecca Tracy married William
Merrick (Dawes-Gates 2:801). John Tracy married Mary Prence, daughter of
Governor Thomas and Mary (Collier) Prence, and later moved to Windham,
Connecticut. Also see Dawes-Gates 2:799-802, some of which has been

Alias:<ALIA> Ethelred the Unready /Æðelræd/
Ethelred the Unready (c. 968 – April 23, 1016), also know as Ethelred II a
nd Æðelræd Unræd was King of England(978 – 1013, and 1014 – 1016).
ccording to William of Malmesbury, Ethelred defecated in the baptismal fo
nt as a child, which led St. Dunstan to prophesy that the English monarc
hy would be overthrown during Ethelred's reign. This story is, however, al
most certainly a fabrication.
Ethelred succeeded to the throne aged about 10 following the death of h
is father King Edgar and subsequent murder of his half-brother Edward t
he Martyr. His nickname "The Unready" does not mean that he was ill-prepar
ed, but derives from the Anglo-Saxon unrædmeaning "without counsel" or "i
ndecisive". This is also a pun on his name, Æðelræd, which means "Well adv
ised".
Ethelred married firstly to Ælflaed, daughter of Thored, the ealdorm
an of Northumbria; she was the mother of four sons, including Edmund Irons
ide. In 997, he remarried to Ælfgifu, daughter of ealdorman Aethelberht, w
ho gave him two sons, Edwig and Edgar. His third and final marriage, in 10
02, was to Emma of Normandy, whose grandnephew, William I of England, wou
ld later use this relationship as the basis of his claim on the throne.
[edit]
Conflict with the Danes
England had experienced a long period of peace after the reconquest of t
he Danelaw in the first half of the 10thCentury. However in 991 Ethelr
ed was faced with a Viking fleet larger than any since Guthrum's "Summer A
rmy" a century earlier. This fleet was led by Olaf Trygvasson, a Norwegi
an with ambitions to reclaim his country from Danish domination. After ini
tial military setbacks including the defeat of his Ealdorman Byrhtno
th at the Battle of Maldon, Ethelred was able to come to terms with Ola
f, who returned to Norway to gain his kingdom with mixed success. While th
is arrangement won him some respite, England faced further depredations fr
om Viking raids. Ethelred fought these off, but in many cases followed t
he practice of earlier kings including Alfred the Great in buying them o
ff by payment of what was to become known as Danegeld.
Ethelred ordered the massacre ofthe Danes living in England on St Brice
's Day (November 13) 1002, in response to which Sweyn Haraldsson start
ed a series of determined campaigns to conquer England. In this he succeed
ed, but after his victory, he lived for only another five weeks.
[edit]
Death and legacy
In 1013, Ethelred fled to Normandy, seeking protection by his brother-in-l
aw, Robert of Normandy, when England was over-run by Sweyn Haraldsson of D
enmark and his forces. He returned in February, 1014, following the dea
th of Sweyn Haraldsson. Ethelred died on April23, 1016, in London, whe
re he was buried. He was succeeded by his son, Edmund II of England.
Despite the steady stream of Viking attacks, Ethelred's reignwas far fr
om the disaster described by chroniclers writing well after the event. Eth
elred introduced major reforms to the machinery of government in Anglo-Sax
on England, and is responsible for the introduction of Shire Reeves or She
riffs. The quality of the coinage, always a good indicator of the prevaili
ng economic conditions, remained very high during his reign.

General Notes: Wife - Emma Normandy
Originally the wife of Ralph de Warenne was put down as Beatrice and:
CP: Shewas almost certainly the dau of a sister of Gunnor who married Ric
hard I, duke of Normandy.
EYC, Vol VI, Frontispiece pedigree: She was probably that.
Keats-Rohan in both DP 480 and DD 776 says she was Emma, quoting Clay's EY
C, VIII, No 1. She refers also to her own study ""Aspects of Robert of Tor
igny's Genealogies Revisited", pun Medieval Studies 1993. From her artic
le in DD, 777on Radulf de Warenne, it seems that Beatrice de Vascoeuil w
as the wife of Ralph I de Warenne, and the mother of Ralph II who with Em
ma were parents of William I de Warenne.

Alias:<ALIA> Edmund the /Deed-Doer/
Edmund I, or Edmund the Deed-Doer (Eadmund) (921–May 26, 946) was Ki
ng of England from 939 until his death. He was a son of Edward the Elder a
nd half-brother of Athelstan.
Athelstan died on October 27, 939, and Edmund succeeded him as King. Short
ly after his proclamationas king he had to face several military threat
s. King Olaf I of Dublin conquered Northumbria and invaded the Midlands. W
hen Olaf died in 942 Edmund reconquered the Midlands. In 943 he became t
he god-father of King Olaf of York. In944, Edmund was successful in recon
quering Northumbria. In the same year hisally Olaf of York lost his thro
ne and left for Dublin in Ireland. Olaf became the king of Dublin as Ol
af Cuaran and continued to be allied to his god-father. In 945 Edmund conq
uered Strathclyde but conceded his rights on the territory to King Malco
lm I of Scotland. In exchange they signed a treaty of mutual military supp
ort. Edmund thus established a policy of safe borders and peaceful relatio
nships with Scotland. During his reign, the revival of monasteries in Engl
and began.
Edmund was murdered in 946 by Leofa, an exiled thief. Hehad been havi
ng a party in Pucklechurch, when he spotted Leofa in the crowd. After t
he outlaw refused to leave, the king and his advisors fought Leofa. Edmu
nd and Leofa were both killed. He was succeeded as king by his brother Edr
ed, king from 946 until 955.
Edmund's sons later ruled England as:
* Edwin of England, King from 955 until 957, king of only Wessex and K
ingdom of Kent from 957 until his death on October 1, 959.
* Edgar of England, king of only Mercia and Northumbria from 957 unt
il his brother's death in 959, then king ofEngland from 959 until 975.

Elizabeth of Lancaster (bf. 21 February 1363[1] - 24 November 1426) was the third child of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster and his first wife Blanche of Lancaster.
Life
Some sources list her as having been born after 1 January 1363 but prior to 21 February 1363. She was born in Burford Shropshire. In her childhood she was raised in her father's royal household under Katherine Swynford whom she held in high regard. She grew up a headstrong and spirited young woman compared to her more serious elder sister.
First Marriage
On 24 June 1380, at Kenilworth Castle, she married John Hastings, 3rd Earl of Pembroke, she was seventeen years old and the groom was only eight. She was transferred to another household befitting her new rank as Countess of Pembroke. However, six years later the marriage between Elizabeth and young Hastings was annulled.
Second Marriage
By then aged 23, Elizabeth had tired of her 14-year-old husband. It is said that she had also been seduced by her cousin Richard II of England's half-brother John Holland a known schemer, and had become pregnant by him.[3] This forced her father to have her marriage annulled, and on 24 June 1386, at Plymouth, she hastily married John Holland, 1st Duke of Exeter. Fortunately her father dealt with her leniently and favoured his new son-in-law, such was Holland’s charm.
Third Marriage
Holland was executed in 1400 for conspiring during the Epiphany Rising against his cousin, Elizabeth's brother Henry IV of England, who had by this time usurped the throne from Richard. That same year, Elizabeth married Sir John Cornwall, 1st Baron Fanhope and Milbroke. Her marriage to Sir John caused some scandal as Sir John failed to ask her brother for permission to marry Elizabeth, which resulted in Sir John being arrested. However the marriage is said to have been a happy and loving one and they went on to have two children.
She died in 1426 and was buried at Burford Church, Burford, Shropshire.
Children
With John Holland she had five children:
1.Constance Holland (1387-1437) who married Thomas Mowbray, 4th Earl of Norfolk and Sir John Grey and had issue.
2.Richard Holland (c. 1389 - 3 September 1400); had no issue.
3.Alice Holland (c. 1392 - c. 1406) who married Richard de Vere, 11th Earl of Oxford; had no issue.
4.John Holland, 2nd Duke of Exeter (1395-1447); had issue.
5.Sir Edward Holland (1399-1413); had no issue.
With John Cornwall, 1st Baron Fanhope and Milbroke she had two children:
1.Constance Cornwall (c. 1401 - c. 1427) who married John Fitzalan, 14th Earl of Arundel, but had no issue.
2.Sir John Cornwall (c. 1404 - 2 May 1422) John Cornwall was only seventeen when he was killed at the Siege of Meaux. He died next to his father, who had seen his son's head being blown off by a gun-stone. He had no issue.

General Notes: Husband - Henry I England
Alias:<ALIA> /"Beauclerc"/
Henry I of England (c.1068 – 1 December 1135), called Henry Beauclerc beca
use of his scholarly interests, was the fourth son ofWilliam the Conquero
r. He reigned as King of England from 1100 to 1135, succeeding his brothe
r, William II Rufus. Henry also was known by the nickname "Lion of Justice
", due to the refinements which he brought about in the rudimentary admini
strative and legislative machinery of the time.
He seized power after the death of William II, which occurred (convenientl
y) during the absence of his older brother Robert Curthose on the Crusades
.
His reign is noted for his opportunistic political skills, the aforementio
ned improvements in themachinery of government, the integration of the di
vided Anglo-Saxon and Normans within his kingdom, his reuniting of the dom
inions of his father, and hiscontroversial (although well-founded) decisi
on to name his daughter as his heir.
General Notes: Wife - Edith Scotland
Alias:<ALIA> (Edith) Eadgyth /Atherling/, Matilda of Scotland
Edith of Scotland, (c.1080-May 1, 1118) was the wife of Henry I of Englan
d. She was the daughter of Malcolm III of Scotland and St. Margaret of Sco
tland. Robert Curthosehad stood as godfather at her christening. The Engl
ish queen Matilda of Flanders was also present at the font and may have be
en her godmother.
When she was about six-years-old Edith and her sister, Mary, were se
nt to Romsey, where their aunt Christina was abbess. During her stay at Ro
msey and Wilton, Edith was much sought-after as a bride; she turned down p
roposals from both William de Warenne, 2nd Earl of Surrey, and Alan Rufu
s, Lord of Richmond. Hermann of Tournai even claims that William Rufus con
sidered marrying her.
After thedeath of King William Rufus in August 1100, his brother Henry qu
ickly seizedthe royal treasury and the royal crown. His next task w
as to marry, and Henry's choice fell on Edith. Because Edith had spent mo
st of her life in a nunnery, there was some controversy over whether or n
ot she had been veiled as a nun and would thus be ineligible for marriag
e. Henry sought permission for themarriage from Archbishop Anselm of Cant
erbury, who returned to England in September 1100 after a long exile. Unwi
lling to decide so weighty a matter on his own, Anselm called a counc
il of bishops in order to determine the legalityof the proposed marriag
e. Edith testified to the archbishop and the assembled bishops of the rea
lm that she had never taken holy vows. She insisted that her parents had s
ent her and her sister to England for educational purposes, and that her a
unt Christina had veiled her only to protect her "from the lustof the Nor
mans". Edith claimed she had pulled the veil off and stamped on it, and h
er aunt beat and scolded her most horribly for this. The council conclud
ed that Edith had never been a nun, and gave his permission for the marria
ge.
Edith and Henry seem to have known one another for some time before the
ir marriage -- William of Malmesbury states that Henry had "long been atta
ched" to her, and Orderic Vitalis says that Henry had "long adored" Edith
's character. Through her mother she was descended from Edmund II of Engla
nd; this was very important as Henry wanted to help make himself more popu
lar with the English people and Edith represented the old English dynast
y. In their children the Norman and Anglo-Saxon dynasties would be unite
d. Another benefit of the marriage was that England and Scotland became po
litically closer; three ofher brothers served as kings of Scotland and we
re unusually loyal to Englandduring this period.
Edith and Henry were married on November 11, 1100 at Westminster Abb
ey by Archbishop Anselm of Canterbury. She was crowned as "Matilda", a fas
hionable Norman name. She and Henry had two children:
1. Maud, born February 1102
2. William Adelin, born 1103
She maintained her court primarilyat Westminster, but accompanied her hus
band in his travels all across England, and in 1106/1107, Edith visited No
rmandy with Henry. Her court was filled with musicians and poets; she comm
issioned Turgot to write a biography of hermother, Saint Margaret. She w
as an active queen, and like her mother was renowned for her devotion to r
eligion and the poor. William of Malmesbury describes her as attending chu
rch barefoot at Lent, and washing the feet and kissing the hands of the si
ck. She also administered extensive dower properties andwas known as a pa
tron of the arts, especially music. After her death in 1118she was rememb
ered by her subjects as "Matilda the Good Queen" and "Matilda of Blessed M
emory", and for a time sainthood was sought for her, though she was nev
er canonized. Henry married again four years after her death.

General Notes: Child - Matilda England
Alias:<ALIA> Empress /Maud/
Empress Maud (1102 – September 10, 1167) is the title by which Matilda – d
aughter and dispossessed heir of King Henry I of England and his wife Ma
ud of Scotland (herself daughter of Malcolm III Canmore and St. Margar
et of Scotland) – is known, in order to differentiate her from the many ot
her Matildas of the period. Matilda is the Latin form of the name "Maud" (
or "Maude"). She was the first ever female ruler of England.
When shewas seven years old, Maud was betrothed to Henry V, Holy Roman Em
peror, and was sent to Germany in 1111 to begin her training as his consor
t. Maud and Henry were married at Worms on January 7, 1114 in a splendid c
eremony. In March1116 Maud and Henry visited Rome and Tuscany, and she ac
ted as Regent in hisabsence. The Imperial couple allegedly had no survivi
ng offspring; Hermann of Tournai, however, states that Maud bore a child t
hat lived only a short while (some have theorized that this child may ha
ve in fact been Thomas Becket, subsequently raised by his foster parent
s: Gilbert Becket and Rosea or/and Matilda de Caen]). When Henry died in 1
125, he left Maud a "childless" widow oftwenty-three. Her brother Willi
am Adelin had perished several years before in the wreck of the White Shi
p, leaving Maud the only legitimate heir to the English throne, a fact th
at King Henry II may have had contrary evidence to.
Maud returned to England, where her father named her his heir, and arrang
ed another marriage for her. In 1127, she was married again, at Le Ma
ns in Anjou,to Geoffrey of Anjou, who was eleven years her junior. He w
as nicknamed "Plantagenet" from the broom flower (planta genista) whi
ch he took as his emblem, hence the name of the line of English kings desc
ended from him. The marriagewas not a happy one, and Maud separated fr
om him and returned to her father. She returned to Geoffrey in 1131, and t
hey were reconciled. They produced three sons, the eldest of whom, Henr
y, was born on March 5, 1133. The birth of her second son, Geoffrey, Cou
nt of Nantes, in 1134 was difficult and Maud nearly died in childbed. H
er father King Henry came to visit and took "great delight" in his grandso
ns. King Henry and Geoffrey quarreled, and so when her father died on Dece
mber 1, 1135 in Normandy, Maud was with Geoffrey in Anjou.
On the death of her father in 1135, Maud expected to succeed to the thro
ne ofEngland, but her cousin, Stephen of Blois usurped the throne, breaki
ng an oath he had previously made to defend her rights. The civil war whi
ch followed was bitter and prolonged, with neither side gaining the ascend
ancy for long, but it was not until 1139 that Maud could command the milit
ary strength necessary to challenge Stephen within his own realm. Stephen
's wife was another Matilda: Matilda, countess of Boulogne. During the wa
r, Maud's most loyal and capable supporter was her half-brother, Robe
rt of Gloucester.
Maud's greatesttriumph came in April 1141, when her forces defeated and c
aptured King Stephen, who was made a prisoner and effectively deposed. Alt
hough she now controlled the kingdom, Maud never styled herself queen b
ut took the title "Lady of the English". Her advantage lasted only a few m
onths. By November, Stephen was free, and a year later, the tables were tu
rned when Maud was besieged at Oxford but escaped, supposedly by fleeing a
cross the snow-covered land in a white cape. In 1141 she had escaped Deviz
es in a similarly clever manner, by disgusing herself as a corpse and bei
ng carried out for burial. In 1147, Maud was finally forced to return to F
rance, following the death of Robert of Gloucester.
All hope was not lost. Maud's son, Henry (later, Henry II of England), w
as showing signs of becoming a successful leader. Although the civil war h
ad been decided in Stephen's favour, his reign was troubled. In 1153, t
he death of his son Eustace, combined with the arrival of
