After death of husband,Edward, She read about new papermill in Millnocket,ME. Sold assets in PEI moved with children, bought boarding house in Millinocket. Learned by reading her kids school books at night.Recalled by Sarita(Birt)Harvey* "She was a very gentle lady. Always a lady. She was very sweet. She lived with Aunt Mary...Margaret was crippled with arthristis and had to move about with crutches." Name Margaret is Marguerite alias.
Aug. 24, 1839 " I'm sure about Edward Birt marrying Marguerite McManus. It is quite a story as the Birts were Protestants and Edward converted to catholicism when he married Marguerite. When he died in PEI, Marguerite, went south to Millinocket, Maine with the children. The family was never in touch with the other Birts. I know that Marguerite died in Berlin, New Hampshire and her body was taken back to PEI for burial when she died. Marguerite's death certificate shows Thomas McManus and Susan Heron as parents. A story that was passed on to me recently: When Edward was sick and near death, a couple brothers (may have been one, not sure) had tried to get Edward to renounce his catholicism and revert back -- which caused futher tension with the rest of the family. Needless to say the religion was a big problem during that time. I got the following from Tom O'conner regarding my inquiries into Susan Heron: "I've wondered about that family. A Mary Heron, widow leased a farm of 78 acres in Ft Augustus Lot 36 from Rev John MacDonald on 8-24-1839 and conveyed it to Thomas McManus on 2-24-1846. On 6-22-1840 (her son?) James Heron leased another 55 1/2 acres nearby and bought it from the province in 1878. I thought Mary might have been the widow of the first Peter Heron but she had died before this. I wouldn't be suprised if she was his daughter, or a daughter in law. I found the leases for these farms in PARO, the Archives in Charlottetown." Mike

Mrs Thomas (Mary Birt) Sullivan, 85 of 801 Third Ave., died
Saturday afternoon, Oct 10, at the St Louis Hospital after a long
illness.
She was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada,
September 14, 1885, the daughter of Edward J. and Margaret Mcmannus
Birt and had lived in Berlin most of her adult life. She was the widow
of Thomas J. Sullivan, who died in January 1970. Mrs Sullivan was a
member of St. Keiran Church.
Surviving relatives include three sons, James E. Sullivan and John
L. Sullivan of Berlin, Thomas R. Sullivan, Manchester; four daughters
Mrs Charles (Mildred) Meehan, Mrs Charles (Delia) Arsenault, Grand
Prairie Texas, Mrs Lucien (Gladys) Lamontangne, Berlin and Mrs Wendell
(Audrey) Horne, Boca Raton Florida; 12 Grandchildren, 18 great-
grandchildren; three brothers John Birt, Cambridge, mass, James Birt,
Gardiner, Mass and Louis Birt, Florida.

Beloved mother of Natalie Trainor of Fredericton, New Brunswick and Gregory Trainor of Charlottetown.
Ethel will also be sadly missed but fondly remembered by her brothers; Roger (Eleanor) Birt, Roy (Joyce) Birt, her special niece, Belinda Squires and numerous other nieces & nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; Alex & Mary C. (Squires) Birt and brother, Waldo Squires.
Resting at The Cutcliffe Funeral Home from where the funeral will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Kevin MacKenzie officiating. Interment to follow in the family plot at West St. Peter's Cemetery.

Harold Earl Birt Sr. East Millinocket - Harold Earl Birt Sr.,m 76, died at his residence in East Millinocket, Dec 26, 1997. He was born Dec. 17, 1921, in East Millinocket, the fourth son of eight children of Walter Howard and Mary Jane (MacNevin) Birt. He was educated in the public schools and graduated from Garrett Schenck Junion High School in June of 1940. He was employed at Great Northern Paper Co. from Aug. 1, 1939, starting as a piper and retiring as night maintenence foreman on July 31, 1985. On March 26, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving 23 months in the Asia-Pacific area until Dec. 4, 1945. Harold was a member of the First Congregational Church, UCC, of East Millinocket, and a formaer chairman of the trustees. On Jan 30, 1950, he was united in marriage with Virgie Ada Perry, Harold was very active in the Masonic Lodge. He was raised to the Subline Degree on April 5, 1951 in Nollesemic Lodge No. 205 of Millinocket, by play cast of "The Rose Upon the Alter". He served as worship master in 1968. He served the Grand Lodge of Maine as district deputy grand master of the 24th Masonic District in 1976 and 1977. He was exalted to the August Degree in Mt. Katahdin R.A.C. No 60, Millinocket, on April 14, 1953. He was installed as high priest in 1962, 1963, and 1965, and as secretary from 1971 through 1984 and again in 1987 and 1988. He served the grand chaper as district the Red Cross of Constantine in Tamerlane Conclave No. 4 in Bangor on Sept. 25, 1976. He was a member of the Maine Lodge of Research. He was a member of Onawa Chapter No 130 Order of the Eastern Star of the Valley of Bangor Eastern Star Lodge of P:erfection, Palestine Council Pricess of Jerusalem and the Chapter of Rose Croix, and the Valley of Portand Consistory 32nd Degree ASSR. He became a noble of Anah Temple, A.AO.N.M.S. on May 8, 1976. He was installed grand high priest in South Portland on April 30, 1988. He was a member of Past Officers Association and a member of Past Commanders Accociation. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Virgie (Perry) Birt of East Millinocket; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold Earl Birt Jr and Brenda Anne Birt of East Millinocket, Arthur Perry Birt and Carla Gay Birt of Millinocket; one daughter and son-in-law, Diane Mary Brown and Dana Lewis Brown of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren, Dawn Mary Birt, Carl Perry Birt, Christopher Virgil Birt, Lynda Diane Birt, Justin Perry Birt, Adam Lucas Birt, Derek Allen Brown, Brandon Birt Brown, Jeremy Owen Brown, and Erin Lea Brown; two great-grand-children, Coddy Allen and Kaylee Marie Brown; threee brothers William C Birt, Daniel and his wife, Pauline Birt of East Millinocket and Lewis J Birt of Red Bank, N.J.; one sister Catherine M Leavitt of Eddington.

EAST MILLINOCKET - Virgie Ada Birt, 89, wife of the late Harold Earl Birt Sr., died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at a Millinocket health care facility. She was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Augusta, the daughter of Clifford H.M. and Gladys V.G. (Boynton) Perry. Virgie grew up in Millinocket and was a graduate of Stearns High School, Class of 1937. She also attended Eastern Maine General Hospital, where she received training to become a registered nurse. After working there for nearly a year, she and several childhood friends signed up for the Army during the onset of World War II. She served for two years in Australia, and then returned stateside to Cushion Military Hospital in Massachusetts. After she was discharged from the Army, she enrolled at Boston University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education, graduating in 1949. Upon completing her education, she returned to Millinocket and on Jan. 30, 1950, was united in marriage with Harold E. Birt of East Millinocket. Virgie and Harold built their home in East Millinocket and raised their family there. She began teaching at Opal Myrick School, East Millinocket, after her own children were in school and taught there her entire career, retiring in the early 1980s. Virgie was a life member of the Eastern Star. She also was a member of First Congregational Church of East Millinocket, where she was active with the Women's Fellowship Group. She is survived by two sons, Harold E. Birt Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of East Millinocket and Arthur P. Birt and his wife, Carla, of Cumberland; a daughter, Diane M. Brown and her husband, Dana, of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren, Dawn Mary Birt, Carl Perry Birt, Christopher Virgil Birt, Lynda Diane Birt, Justin Perry Birt, Adam Lucas Birt, Derek Allen Brown and his wife, Bobbie Jo, Branden Birt Brown and his wife, Ann, Jeremy Owen Brown and his wife, Jessica, and Erin Lea (Brown) and her husband, William Peasley, III; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Jacqueline Avis Steeves of Millinocket; a brother-in-law, Daniel Birt and his wife, Pauline, of East Millinocket; a sister-in-law, Catherine M. Leavitt of Eddington; a special niece, Virgie McPheters of Millinocket; a special cousin, Eva Smith of Readfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She will also be missed by special friends, Emma Haskell and Billie Jo Hunter. In addition to her husband, Virgie was predeceased by a sister, Chrystal Birt. Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Lamson Funeral Home, 17 Western Ave., East Millinocket. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at First Congregational Church of East Millinocket with Pastor Dottie Hutch officiating. Interment will be at East Millinocket Cemetery. Ernie was born and raised as one of thirteen siblings in Marie, PEI. He completed his basic training in Charlottetown. He signed up the same day as Art MacDonald, the first WWII Veteran we interviewed. Joining the navy was the first time he left PEI. He served from 1943 until 1947. His service was described as having no break time to eat, or free choices being made anymore. You did what you were told when you were told.
After the War Ernie stayed in Ontario. Upon moving to Ontario, he took up horseshoeing and continued in that career until he retired. He also married and has one daughter and one son. Ernie currently resides in Ontario and will be 87 in April, 2011.

children, John Cook also six, William Smith two, while Charles Gibbs and
Samual Mayhew each had one child. Thomas Pair and the Fleming and
Mannel families were shown on the list of people due to emigrate,
but they did not receive funds.

Included among the 160 settlers who arrived in 1831 in the Baltic and
Minerva were the families of John Birt, John Cook, William Smith,
Charles Gibbs, and Samuel Mayhew, all from Benhall Parish (Plomesgate Union).
The five families who went "by thier own will" received nineteen pounds,
ten shillings for clothing, thirty-five pounds, ten shillings as spending money
("to be received at Yarmouth"), seventeen pounds, two shillings, and sevenpence
for provisions, and fifty-four pounds for their passages. The total bill, amounting
to 126 pounds, eight shillings, represented an average cost of twenty-five per family, which approximated the annual cost of maintaining a family in the Plomesgate
workhouse. The Cook, Birt, and Smith families even managed to obtain an
allowance of one gallon of gin per family for the crossing. Other 1831 arrivals
included people from parishes in the Poor Law Union of Hoxne and Wangford.

**Page 7-It must be understood that, after Capt. Stewart's death, Mount Stewart
Estate was held by two distinct categories of tenants. There were, first of all,
those who could be termed "tenants-in-ordinary," people who leased small
holdings of 50 or 100 acres to be operated as separate farms. There was also
the major tenant, the person to whom Mount Stewart Farm, the central heartland
of the estate, comprising nearly 500 acres, had been leased. Among the small-scale
tenants was Isaac Jay (1784- 1857) a native of Meadon, Suffolk, England. By an agreement dated Aug. 8, 1831, he took out a 999 year lease on 100 acres at a
yearly rental of 1 shilling an acre. He paid the rent until 1851 when the farm
was divided between his sons, George and John. It is interesting to note that in
1850 he was employed shingling the front and one end of Mount Stewart House.
John Birt and James Rodgerson rented farms on the same date, farms which were eventually passed on to their sons, Jonathan and James res- pectively.
**Page 28-Economic setbacks such as the forced slaughter of livestock often
impelled farmers to seek seasonal employment in other parts of the con- tinent.
The forests of Maine and the Miramichi were long the Mecca of aspirants seeking
to repair their fortunes. During the early part of the century, the western wheat
fields also beckoned. On August 22, 1903, the largest harvest excursion up until
that time left railway wharf in Summerside for the prairies. Mount Stewart was
represented by J. A. MacLeod, William Affleck, A. Logan, Frank Pigot, M. Coffin,
W. Clark, Bruce Jay, G. W. Pigot, J. McLean, George Birt, J. J. MacDonald,
John F. Birt and Ira D. Birt. The rate as far as Winnipeg was $10.00. Once there,
it was necessary for one to have an extension coupon signed by a farmer, showing
that he had been engaged to work as a farm labourer
**Page 29-The story of the silver fox industry in Prince Edward Island reads
like a chapter from the Arabian Nights. The most successful breeder was Charles
Dalton of Tignish who produced a strain of beautiful "royal black" animals, the
skins of which were sold to the Imperial families of Russia for as much as $2,900.
each. The industry expanded rapidly, and, during the twenties, Major Smallwood,
Russel Clark, Stewart MacEachern, L. E. Jay, W. L. MacLeod, Milton Coffin,
William MacKenzie, George Jay, Chester Birt, J. D. Timmins and George
MacKenzie were among those who established ranches in and around Mount
Stewart. Some were fortunate enough to come upon foxes in the wild state.
Such was the case of the McGuirk brothers of Dromore, who, in May of 1926,
found and captured a lair of six red foxes. On the other hand, valuable foxes
often escaped from the ranches. In such instances it was customary to contact
Mr. Chester Birt of Pisquid who owned a "fox dog," trained to track down runaway animals. He recaptured 65 foxes during his lifetime. The industry's collapse was as meteoric as its rise. Over-production of skins, the changing whims of the world of
fashion and the advent of the Great Depression reduced prices to the point that
ranching was no longer pro- fitable.
** Page 110-The reality of war struck Mount Stewart even more sharply when
local names were entered on Prince Edward Island's Roll of Honor, maintained
by the Examiner. One of the first names entered was that of Cyrus B. Birt, the
son of Mr. and Mrs. John Birt of Fanning Brook. A member of the Princess Patricia Regiment, he was reported killed in battle in May, 1915. He was only nineteen.
Many more were wounded or killed before hostilities ceased. One such was Coffin Douglas, third son of Mrs. Emma and the late Elisha Douglas of Head of
Hillsborough. He was reported to have been in a party doing work in
"an advanced district" of the front in France when the Germans opened shell
fire on them. The officer in charge ordered the men to take cover, but, on this
being done, one man was missing. Two volunteers were asked to bring in the
wounded man seen lying in the open, and Spr. Douglas was one of the volunteers.
The men reached their comrade safely, but on the way back they were hit by shrapnel from a bursting shell. Spr. Douglas was killed instantly. This was on April 13, 1917.

Mrs. Cora A. Birt,91, of Church St., Berlin, NH passed away on Sunday March 18, 2012 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. She was born in Berlin on August 23, 1920 the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Rheaume) Roberge and was a lifelong resident. She was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne, the AVH Auxiliary and Good Shepherd Parish. Cora loved to knit and belonged to a sewing circle with her friends. She was loving wife, mother and grandmother and loved all of her friends dearly.
Members of the family include her husband Joseph Birt of Berlin, NH; daughter Nancy Pickford and husband Thomas of Berlin, NH; son Charles Birt and wife Debra of Manchester, NH; grandchildren Thomas Pickford, Katherine Lodge and husband George and Alyssa Birt; step brother Arthur Fortier of Berlin, NH; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by siblings Sylvio Roberge, Yvette Thibault and Paul Roberge.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday March 23, 2012 at 11 AM at St. Anne Church of Good Shepherd Parish. Interment will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. The Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
