General Notes: Husband - Eliakim Tupper
According to (11): Eliakim was selectman at Sandwich for 12 years and served on the committee "to supply the pulpit" in 1722. He owned much land and was a "shopkeeper". He did not agree with the doctrine preached in the congregation, and on 13 April 1732 was one of two contractors who built a new meeting house for the opponents of the established minister. In 1736 he and his family moved to Lebanon, Connecticut.
General Notes: Child - Captain Eliakim Tupper Eliakim Tupper
Eliakim moved to Plymouth, MA. soon after the birth of their first child and at the time his parents moved to Lebanon, CT. He and Mary became members of the church in Plymouth in 1737, and he served there on the jury and was a representative to the Assembly in 1742. About 1750 they moved to Lebanon, CT.
She died shortly after, on 24 March 1753 at Lebanon, CT.
Eliakim went to Nova Scotia from Connecticut after the expulsion of the French. (10) notes: "In 1760, having remarried, Eliakim and his brother Elias and others from Connecticut emigrated to lands granted to them at Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, where he died during the first winter. Most of the family remained there. The source (2) notes that he came with two other New Englanders, William and Jane West (presumably parents of Elizabeth West who would marry his son Charles) and settled in Cornwallis, NS in 1763. He died in Cornwallis, on 28 February 1761 (10) (on 28 January 1761 according to (16((.

Sources:
The information here on the early Tuppers (to the generation of Elias Tupper, b. 1715, but with no information on Elias himself) and related families in Massachusetts comes almost entirely from the excellent and extensive Gendex file of Harry Hadaway of Bow, NH (3). He documents well his sources and for completeness I repeat here the source information, noting always that it is cited by him unless I have consulted the reference myself. One of his principal sources is a FTM (Family Tree Maker) CD from the Tupper Family Association. This may be useful to track down some day to check out the original source material for thsi family. Note also that there has been a book published on the Tuppers (11); this also has not been consulted by me.
Unless otherwise noted, information on the next generation, that of Eliakim Tupper, b. 1740 (children of Elias Tupper and Jerusha Sprague), comes almost entirely from the excellent Sprague Family Database of Dick Weber (15).
Unless otherwise noted, Miller's book (1) is the source of my information on the following generation in Nova Scotia.

He was a farmer.
"Twelve of Samson's children all had rather large families...and all withtheir children were Quakers or Friends, they most of them of the nextgeneration came to yearly or June meetings. I personally know of thethird generation when I was a boy in say the Civil War times or before, perhaps 200 of them."
Quote from Walter's letter February 28, 1913
General Notes: Child - Job Sherman
"In early life he engaged in farming and in school teaching and in 1790or thereabouts moved to Newport and opened a country store corner ofFrank and Thames Street. In 1796-8 he purchased the building latelyknown as 135-7 Thames Street. He continued successfully for severalyears but later sold out to his son William, who at the death of Job in1848 took in his brother, David, as partner and turned the store into astraight dry goods, first along keeping largely to men's goods, but laterwhen clothing stores (mens) but their trade, he took in all parts ofstaple dry and fancy goods."
"I only remember of the original stock when it was a general store, theCrockery. This Job, my grandfather, was a consistent Quaker, never helda public office, but was prominent in meeting affairs. He was a goodbusinessman, an original trustee of the Newport Savings Bank. He marriedDecember 9, 1795, Alice Anthony, daughter of Isaac and Rebecca Anthony ofPortsmouth. She dies March 11, 1826.

General Notes: Child - Lt. John Hollister
"It is believed that John Hollister was born in Engla nd in 1612 and emigrated to America in 1642. He is though t to be a son of Roger Hollister, who married December 28 , 1607, Alice Fisher, and owned Stinchcombe Manor in Glouce stershire, England. His father, John Hollister, had purcha sed Stinchcombe and Bradstone Manors in 1608. John Hollister's name first appears as a juror in th e court at Wethersfield held March 2, 1642. He was admitte d as a freeman there in 1643. He was a deputy in 1644, an d again in 1645, and he represented the town many times unt il 1656. In February, 1656, he was appointed with others b y the General Court to give "the best and safe advise to th e Indians, if they agreed to meet and should crave their ad vice". John Hollister was a Lieutenant in March of 1658, whe n he applied to the General Court as to the charges of th e church at Wethersfield against him, for which he had bee n excommunicated by the Reverend John Russell. As a resul t of this controversy, in which his father-in-law, (934), a s well as (1012) Richard Treat and John Deming took his sid e, Mr. Russell and his adherents were disgraced and remove d to Hadley. Lt. John Hollister was appointed collector in Wethersf ield March 14, 1660. He became a large landholder in Wethe rsfield, especially in that part across the Connecticut Riv er to the east, which became the town of Glastonbury." JOHN HOLLISTER, Lieutenant, b. in England circa 1612; d. 1665; sailed from Bristol, England, for America in 1641, and settled in Wethersfield, Conn., 2d March, 1642; he was a juror of the Particular Court for Wethersfield, and represented that town in the General Assembly frequently between the years 1643 and 1656; 3d October, 1654, received with others an appointment to recruit men for an expedition probably against the Indians; his name first appears as Lieutenant in March, 1638-9; appointed Collector 14th March, 1660; m. Joanna TREAT, d. October, 1694; dau. of Hon. Richard TREAT, Sr.; given double grant of land for services to Colony. Colonial families of the United States of America: Volume 1 ISSUE This information is from a book called " Glastonbury from Settlement to Suburbs, by Marjorie Grant McNulty. Published 1983. I bought it from the Glastonbury Historical Society many years ago. Also this is quite long, so bear with me.
The southern lot of Naubuc Farms ended at the mouth of Roaring Brook, which was then farther north than is today. Below that was " ungiven " land, which had apparently been bought by the proprietors from Tarramuggus, the son of Sowheag. It remained undivided for several years. Richard Treat received an allotment of 120 acres in 1641 ( later he acquired a great many more ). John Hollister also received land in Nayaug; surveyors were chosen to " sett out " his lot of 50 acres in 1644. Later he bought 80 acres from Thomas Hurlbut, '" a solider," and also he acquired a one-fourth part of Matthew Mitchell's great tract of 900 acres. The Treat and Hollister farms, though they were surveyed three miles into the wilderness, were not measured from the river, according to Sherman Adams, because the river at Nayaug took a souutheasterly course, but from a line drawn north and south from the mouth of Roaring Brook.
The great desire of these Englishmen to incest in land is shown by the circcumstance that manu of the first purchasers never occupied their farms on the east side, but later sold them to others or gave or willed them to their sons. In 1684 a second survey revealed that many of the original farm had changed hands, and the names of the new owners wee those known to us as old Glastonbury names: Welles, Hale, Talcott, Goodrich, Hubbard, Kilborn, Loveland and others. Many of their descendants, as well as those of John Hollister and Richard Treat, still reside in Glastonbury. The Hale farm, widest of the 34, which more than two and a half centuries later became famous for its peaches, was bought from Clement Chaplin, a first owner-investor, by Samuel Hale and the Rev. Timothy Stevens.
( I am now skipping a paragraph )
After a lapse of 335 years it is difficult to reconstruct with any certainty what took place and when. There is confusion about Glastonbury's first house and thus it's first settler. Matthew Mitchell, whose family and livestock had been brutally attacked by Indians in Saybrook ( his son-in-law was burned alive) came up the river in about 1638 to look for safer grazing grounds, settled briefly in Wetherfield andbecame one of the first owners of land in Glastonbury. It is believed that possiblyas early as 1639 he had a herder who was the first white man to live in Glastonbury - certainly the Mitchell cattle were the first to be pastured here. Figuring in a later boundary dispute was a cow pen ( also mentioned in a deed in 1641 ) on Mitchell's land and a a " cellar hole " near it within a few rods of Roaring Brook, then called Sturgeon River. Dr. Alonzo B. Chapin, the author of a history of Glastonbury published in 1853, believed the " cellar hole " was actually a cave where the herder lived, " cellar hole " being a common terminology for a cave at that time. But Sherman Adams speaks of the dwelling as a house. If so it must be considered the first house to be built in Glastonbury - 1639 or 1640.
There is also a doubt as to whether it was John Hollister, Thomas Edwards or possibly Samuel Gardner who first built here in 1649. Sherman Adams felt there was evidence that both Edwards and Gardner were living in Naubuc ( the Indian name for ' east side") prior to 1650. Dr. Chapin considered John Hollister's tenant, Josiah Gilbert, to be Glastonbury's pioneer settler, and Dr. Lee J. Whittles, a Glastonbury historian and founder of the Historical Society of Glastonbury, found evidence suggesting that John Hollisters house was already existing in 1649, near the old Coal Dock west of Tryon Street on the banks of the Connecticut River at Nayaug ( " Land of Noisy Waters ").
Probably John Hollister never lived on this side of the river permantly, though when he died in Wethersfield in 1665, he left his " feather bed at Nayaug " to his son John, in addition to his Nayaug farm. Situated as the house was, so close to the river, spring freshets flooded the place badly every year. Yet the Gilberts, Josiah, and his family, and his brothers Jonathan and John and lather the John Hollister, Jr's, endured the recurring misery until early in the next century when either the whole house or part of it was moved to Tryon Street. According to one story, the house was moved east and south to a location near the Roaring Brook Bridge, where it is still standing, owned by the Killam family. But according to another version, only the back ell of the original house was moved, hauled southeast to Tryon Street, where it stood for many years, eventually being used as a storage shed at the rear of the home of Theodore Pratt, a lineal descendant of John Hollister. Wheter or not the Killam house was built in 1649, it is of very early construction, undoubtly seventeenth century, and is the oldest house still standing in Glastonbury, the ancestral home of the Hollister family for many generations. The house is a two story " lean-to ", of hewn overhang construction, with uniquely carved brackets.
