Born: 1605 - England Baptized: Died: June 17, 1689 - Duxbury, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts Buried:Spouse: Sarah Chandler Marr: 1637
General Notes: Husband - Moses Simmons
"Moses Simmons was a passenger on the ship Fortune. It arrived at Plymouth on November 9, 1621, just a few weeks after the first Thanksgiving. The passenger list is based on the 1623 Division of Land. It was compiled by Charles Edward Banks in Planters of the Commonwealth, and by the information found in Eugene Aubrey Stratton's "Plymouth Colony: Its History and Its People, 1620-1691. It does not state the age of Moses, but likely the 16 year old versus his father-- wives and children would have been listed but are absent for this Moses."
[Lauri Ashton]
"MOSES, Plymouth, one of the first comers, arrived in the Fortune 1621, b. at Leyden, and bearing the Dutch name of Symonson or Simonson, but early shortened his name to the first two syllables; probably brought wife but no children is known excutors Moses, and Thomas, who may both have been born here. He settled at Duxbury, was one of the original purchasers of Dartmouth and properties of Bridgewater and of Middleborougb, but did not remove to either."
[James Savage]
General Notes: Child - Thomas Simmons
"THOMAS, Situate 1646, s. of Moses the first, had Moses and Aaron. "
[James Savage]
General Notes: Child - Moses Simmons
"MOSES, Duxbury, son of the preceding or perhaps his grandson for one of the name is mentioned who may, however, have been son of Thomas; by w. Sarah had John, Aaron, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah, who all married and he died 1689."

Note that "Mayflower Families In Progress" series' volume on "George Soule of the Mayflower and His Descendants for Four Generations", 2nd ed., published by The General Society of Mayflower Descendants in 1995, identifies a Sarah Chandler as 2nd wife of Moses Soule, Moses Simmon's grandson. I sense that there may be some confusion here.

EAST MILLINOCKET - Dorothy Fern (Larlee) Birt, 92, passed away peacefully Oct. 3, 2008, at a local health care facility. She was born Jan. 20, 1916, in Perth, New Brunswick, the daughter of Mabel and Bernard Larlee. Like many families, the Larlee family immigrated to Millinocket seeking employment at Great Northern Paper Co. Dot graduated from Stearns High School, Class of 1934. In 1936 she met Walter Birt and married 10 years later, Feb. 15, 1946. Dot was an active member of First Congregational Church of East Millinocket for more than 50 years. She was an accomplished rug hooker, quilt maker, avid reader and was known for her baking skills, especially her yeast rolls. Dot enjoyed going to yard sales searching for a bargain. Whether she was listening or singing, music certainly brought great joy and peace to her life. For many years she accompanied her husband, Walter, to Augusta, where he was a member of the state legislature. Dot and Walter were fortunate to have been able to visit many places around the world, including Russia, Europe and Australia. Dot, also affectionately known as "Dear Heart," was a kind, most generous and loving lady. Dot's quick wit and enduring faith were traits that people will always remember. Most important in her life was caring for her family, close friends and her grandchildren, Aaron and Kristen, who loved her dearly. After a long journey she has finally been reunited with her husband, Walter; and two sons, Douglas and Walter "Butch" Birt. Dot was also predeceased by her brothers, Jack and Bernard "Snigg" Larlee; and sister, Phyllis Larson; as well as many close family members. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Randi Birt of East Millinocket; her grandson, Aaron Birt and his special friend, Erika Butler, of Kennebunkport; and her granddaughter, Kristen O'Donnell and her husband, Ryan, of Bangor. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Joan Larlee and Virgie Birt of East Millinocket, Kay Leavitt of Eddington and Kay Larlee of Liberty Hill, Texas; and her brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Polly Birt of East Millinocket. Dot's family would like to thank Katahdin Nursing Home staff and the staff at Stearns Assisted Living for their excellent care while she was a resident at each facility. Calling hours will be held noon-2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at First Congregational Church of East Millinocket. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. with the Rev. Andrew McLeod officiating. Burial will be held afterward at East Millinocket Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given in her name to the Memorial Gift Fund at First Congregational Church of East Millinocket.

"House" wives are regulars at legislature
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -
Peg Farnham and Dottie Birt don't vote, but they know more about the legislature, and have attendance records that are better than some who are elected to serve.
The wives of two Republican state representatives have missed only a handful of days of recent special session and have sat patiently through hours of debate, party caucuses and public hearings.
They are familiar faces in the back row of the House fallery. Below them, separated by two seats, are their husbands, Roderick E. Farnham of Hampden and Walter A. Birt of East Millinocket.
Mrs. Birt has accompanied her husband to Augusta almost every day for the 14 years he has served in the Legislature, while Mrs. Farnham says she has missed a few days during the six years her husband has been in the House.
"You couldn't keep us away," said Mrs. Birt. "We just love it."
Both women, who spend a considerable amount of their time together in Augusta, are the core of a small group of legislators' wives who accompany their husbands to the State House.
In the capital, they live in a motel with their husbands throughout the session, traveling home on weekends and holidays.

EAST MILLINOCKET -- Bernard "Snigg" Larlee, 77, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2003, in Millinocket. He was born November 9, 1925, in Millinocket, the son of Bernard H. and Mabel (Hollins) Larlee.
He was predeceased by a sister, Phyllis Larson; and a brother, John T. Larlee. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan (Gates) Larlee of East Millinocket; a sister, Dorothy Birt of East Millinocket; his son, Peter Larlee and wife, Susan, of East Millinocket; his daughter, Eloise (Larlee) Boss and husband, Donald, of Fremont, New Hampshire; six granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews.
Bernard was raised in Millinockeet, and graduated from Stearns High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Pacific Fleet during World War II. Upon return home, he attended Ricker Preparatory in Houlton before going to Boston to study aviation mechanics at Wentworth Polytechnical College. His marriage to Joan in 1950 led him to settle in East Millinocket, where he managed a filling station before becoming the town's Postmaster. Neighbors would attest to being able to hear "Snigg" whistle his way to work each day. During his years in East Millinocket, he was an active member of the First Congregational Church of East Millinocket, serving on its many boards and committees. He has also been a long-standing member of the Nollesemic Lodge of Masons. "Snigg" was an avid Schenck sports fan, working as a member of the Booster's club and helping to host many sports banquets through his participation in the Chamber of Commerce.

John and Betty Whitman settled for a time in Abington, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. In the record of his father's will, he is metioned as a " labourer, resident of Abington." In 1782 there was a John Whitman taxed at Bedford, New Hampshire and there is a lot in that town still known as the " Whitman Lot; " it is probably this John, as his brother Levi was already a resident of Bedford. John later resided at Acworth, New Hampshire.

General Notes: Husband - Lt. John Hollister
"It is believed that John Hollister was born in Engla nd in 1612 and emigrated to America in 1642. He is though t to be a son of Roger Hollister, who married December 28 , 1607, Alice Fisher, and owned Stinchcombe Manor in Glouce stershire, England. His father, John Hollister, had purcha sed Stinchcombe and Bradstone Manors in 1608. John Hollister's name first appears as a juror in th e court at Wethersfield held March 2, 1642. He was admitte d as a freeman there in 1643. He was a deputy in 1644, an d again in 1645, and he represented the town many times unt il 1656. In February, 1656, he was appointed with others b y the General Court to give "the best and safe advise to th e Indians, if they agreed to meet and should crave their ad vice". John Hollister was a Lieutenant in March of 1658, whe n he applied to the General Court as to the charges of th e church at Wethersfield against him, for which he had bee n excommunicated by the Reverend John Russell. As a resul t of this controversy, in which his father-in-law, (934), a s well as (1012) Richard Treat and John Deming took his sid e, Mr. Russell and his adherents were disgraced and remove d to Hadley. Lt. John Hollister was appointed collector in Wethersf ield March 14, 1660. He became a large landholder in Wethe rsfield, especially in that part across the Connecticut Riv er to the east, which became the town of Glastonbury." JOHN HOLLISTER, Lieutenant, b. in England circa 1612; d. 1665; sailed from Bristol, England, for America in 1641, and settled in Wethersfield, Conn., 2d March, 1642; he was a juror of the Particular Court for Wethersfield, and represented that town in the General Assembly frequently between the years 1643 and 1656; 3d October, 1654, received with others an appointment to recruit men for an expedition probably against the Indians; his name first appears as Lieutenant in March, 1638-9; appointed Collector 14th March, 1660; m. Joanna TREAT, d. October, 1694; dau. of Hon. Richard TREAT, Sr.; given double grant of land for services to Colony. Colonial families of the United States of America: Volume 1 ISSUE This information is from a book called " Glastonbury from Settlement to Suburbs, by Marjorie Grant McNulty. Published 1983. I bought it from the Glastonbury Historical Society many years ago. Also this is quite long, so bear with me.
The southern lot of Naubuc Farms ended at the mouth of Roaring Brook, which was then farther north than is today. Below that was " ungiven " land, which had apparently been bought by the proprietors from Tarramuggus, the son of Sowheag. It remained undivided for several years. Richard Treat received an allotment of 120 acres in 1641 ( later he acquired a great many more ). John Hollister also received land in Nayaug; surveyors were chosen to " sett out " his lot of 50 acres in 1644. Later he bought 80 acres from Thomas Hurlbut, '" a solider," and also he acquired a one-fourth part of Matthew Mitchell's great tract of 900 acres. The Treat and Hollister farms, though they were surveyed three miles into the wilderness, were not measured from the river, according to Sherman Adams, because the river at Nayaug took a souutheasterly course, but from a line drawn north and south from the mouth of Roaring Brook.
The great desire of these Englishmen to incest in land is shown by the circcumstance that manu of the first purchasers never occupied their farms on the east side, but later sold them to others or gave or willed them to their sons. In 1684 a second survey revealed that many of the original farm had changed hands, and the names of the new owners wee those known to us as old Glastonbury names: Welles, Hale, Talcott, Goodrich, Hubbard, Kilborn, Loveland and others. Many of their descendants, as well as those of John Hollister and Richard Treat, still reside in Glastonbury. The Hale farm, widest of the 34, which more than two and a half centuries later became famous for its peaches, was bought from Clement Chaplin, a first owner-investor, by Samuel Hale and the Rev. Timothy Stevens.
( I am now skipping a paragraph )
After a lapse of 335 years it is difficult to reconstruct with any certainty what took place and when. There is confusion about Glastonbury's first house and thus it's first settler. Matthew Mitchell, whose family and livestock had been brutally attacked by Indians in Saybrook ( his son-in-law was burned alive) came up the river in about 1638 to look for safer grazing grounds, settled briefly in Wetherfield andbecame one of the first owners of land in Glastonbury. It is believed that possiblyas early as 1639 he had a herder who was the first white man to live in Glastonbury - certainly the Mitchell cattle were the first to be pastured here. Figuring in a later boundary dispute was a cow pen ( also mentioned in a deed in 1641 ) on Mitchell's land and a a " cellar hole " near it within a few rods of Roaring Brook, then called Sturgeon River. Dr. Alonzo B. Chapin, the author of a history of Glastonbury published in 1853, believed the " cellar hole " was actually a cave where the herder lived, " cellar hole " being a common terminology for a cave at that time. But Sherman Adams speaks of the dwelling as a house. If so it must be considered the first house to be built in Glastonbury - 1639 or 1640.
There is also a doubt as to whether it was John Hollister, Thomas Edwards or possibly Samuel Gardner who first built here in 1649. Sherman Adams felt there was evidence that both Edwards and Gardner were living in Naubuc ( the Indian name for ' east side") prior to 1650. Dr. Chapin considered John Hollister's tenant, Josiah Gilbert, to be Glastonbury's pioneer settler, and Dr. Lee J. Whittles, a Glastonbury historian and founder of the Historical Society of Glastonbury, found evidence suggesting that John Hollisters house was already existing in 1649, near the old Coal Dock west of Tryon Street on the banks of the Connecticut River at Nayaug ( " Land of Noisy Waters ").
Probably John Hollister never lived on this side of the river permantly, though when he died in Wethersfield in 1665, he left his " feather bed at Nayaug " to his son John, in addition to his Nayaug farm. Situated as the house was, so close to the river, spring freshets flooded the place badly every year. Yet the Gilberts, Josiah, and his family, and his brothers Jonathan and John and lather the John Hollister, Jr's, endured the recurring misery until early in the next century when either the whole house or part of it was moved to Tryon Street. According to one story, the house was moved east and south to a location near the Roaring Brook Bridge, where it is still standing, owned by the Killam family. But according to another version, only the back ell of the original house was moved, hauled southeast to Tryon Street, where it stood for many years, eventually being used as a storage shed at the rear of the home of Theodore Pratt, a lineal descendant of John Hollister. Wheter or not the Killam house was built in 1649, it is of very early construction, undoubtly seventeenth century, and is the oldest house still standing in Glastonbury, the ancestral home of the Hollister family for many generations. The house is a two story " lean-to ", of hewn overhang construction, with uniquely carved brackets.
