From Isiah Mayo "My grandfather (Isaac) and his sons were large muscular
men and many incidents have been told of their great strength and
endurance. My grandfather when a young man was a sea-faring man,
especially on whaling vessels. The strongest and ablest man aboard was
employed to throw the harpoon and that was his job. There used to be in
my father's house a large chest that grandfather used at sea to keep his
compass, etc. in. It was in existence not many years ago (1930). The
Mayo's of our family have one peculiar feature. Their eyebrows, which
are heavy, are light colored, very often almost white, though their hair
is dark. Some, like my cousin Charles Wesley Morrill, whose mother was
my father's sister, Lydia, have eyebrows that are very heavy, but dark."
Desire Wood, wife of Jason Wood is sister of Isaac Mayo according to the
Isiah Mayo letter. According to the deposition of Aug 15, 1832 made by
Isaac Mayo to receive a pension here are his Rev. War experiences: "1776
he lived in Killinly in Windham Co Conn. He entered as a Volunteer
private into Capt. Crosby's co for six months. Discharged at Princeton
(N.J.) in Jan. 1777 and returned to Cape Cod. Then in July of 1778 he
was drafted under Cpt. Job Crocker of Eastham, Cape Cod for six months.
He was an oarsman and also kept guard near Boston until Jan. 1779 when
he was discharged. He went home to Cape Cod and then moved to Pembroke.
He stayed there until July 1780 when he went as a substitute for six
months for someone else. George Webb was his capt. He stayed in until
being relieved in discharged until Jan of 1781. Then he went back to
Pembroke, got married and lived till July 1782 when he enlisted again as
a substitute for Isaac Delino of Duxbury MS under Capt. Curtis. He was
transferred to Capt. Smith's company. He was dismissed in May of 1783.
He returned to Pembroke and then moved back to Harwich, then to
Province town and then to Thomaston, ME and then to Camden. He said he
was a regular licensed Preacher of the Methodist Denomination." At age
21 he was 5'9" and dark complexion.

THE METHODIST CHURCH
...Between 1790 and 1793 to blacksmith named Isaac Mayo had moved from Barnstable, Mass, to Vinalhaven, or Fox Island, as it was then called. This man descended from a line of ministers and teachers but had gone off to war in his teens to the neglect of his educatin. His father, Lieutenant John Mayo(we think his dad was Thomas), was long a prisoner of war on the notorious prison ship, Jersey.
Isaac was converted under the preaching of one Jesse Lee and had a burning desire to preach, but believed that his lack of schooling barred him from the professional ministry, so he resolved to go into unchurched places, to earn his living by his trade and to preach in schoolhouses or dwellings in an unsalaried service.
At the island he preached and organized a class which was the primary unit of Methodism, and, on a trip to the mainland, he preached the first Methodist sermon ever delivered in the town of Thomaston at the Meadows on June 11, 1795.
Five years later, he moved to this town and lived near the head of Dexter Stret on the Old County Road. He had a shop nearby and on Sundays preached in a schoolhouse. ...
From Thomaston, Mayo moved to Camden and later to other places, in all cases leaving a Methodist society which later became a church. A goodly number of Methodist churches in the Penobscot Region had their beginnings in the labors of the old preaching blacksmith.
Mayo married Hannah Cahoon of Cape Cod. Her family name has been given much publicity in the novels of Joseph Lincoln. There were two daughters: Mary, who married a Becket from Winthrop; and Hannah, who married James Morse, Sr. Isaac Mayo died in Brownville and was buried there."

Have in my possession a copy of Isaac's deposition given to get a pension from the Rev. war which describes his war experiences.
July of 1776 he was in Windham Co Conn. in the town of Killinly and he joined Capt. Crosby's co. of amilitia Volunteers for 6 months. Was discharged July 1777 near Princeton. July 1778 drafted under Capt Job Crocker for 6 months. Dismissed in Jan. near Boston. Went to live in Pambroke until July 1780 when he went for 6 months as a subtitute as a private from Pembroke. Geo. Webb was the capt. Col Shepherd and Brig. Gen Hover. Jan. he was relieved and discharged. He received a pension under the act of June 7, 1832. He received $56.60 per annum (YEAR).

I Reuben Mayo of Brownville in the County of Piscataquis and State of Maine
of Lawful age testify and say That I have been acquainted with Hannah Mayo
Now of Milo in said County and Widow of the late Isaac Mayo who died on the
twelfth day of October 1844 for more than fifty years, and that the said
Isaac Mayo and Hannah his wife have lived together from my first knowledge
of them until the time of their separation by Death. That they have had
Nine Children - Seven of whom I suppose are now living - The said Isaac and
Hannah Mayo Moved into Brownville aforesaid about thirty two years ago.
Since that time he has resided about three years in the town of Camden in
said State and about four years in Milo aforesaid. Prior to their coming to
Brownville the said Isaac resided in various towns and spent his time in
traveling from place to place in the capacity of a Methodist Preacher.

From Jacquie: Isaac died at age 85, October 12, 1844
in Milo. He & Hannah lived with his son Allen. After Isaac died, Hannah went
to live with daughter Maria and Josiah Heath. She died August 20, 1853 at
age 93.
General Notes: Wife - Hannah B. Cahoon
On Ap 21, 1846 Hannah applied for "an act to continue the pensions of
certain widows" passed in Congress June 17, 1844. She declared "that
she was married to the said Isaac Mayo in the month of August in the
year 1780 or 81...That her maiden name was Hannah Cahoon." She lived
with Allen Mayo, her son after her husband's death. Desire Wood
testified that she was at the wedding ceremony and "saw the Rev. Mr.
Dunster then settled minister of said town of Harwick, perform the
ceremony of Marriage and pronounce Husband and Wife the said Isaac Mayo
and Hannah Cahoon..." This info is from a deposition made to the state
of Maine for pension from the Rev. War.

Harwich MA Vital Records p. 170 for July 4, 1781. Desire Wood, sister
of Isaac gave a testimony that the wedding was in August of 1781 and

He paid the poll tax in 1823 in Brownville.
He may have lived at on time on Matinicus Island and on Moose Pecker Reach
The family story tells of their move to Milo from Brownville about July 1830 with four Oxen pulling a sled. Mary was a baby and William would tell the story that he held a bush to shade the baby.
"A good farm" For sale...I offer my farm for sale situated in Milo containing two hundred and forty acres, a good house and barn, nearly new. This is what is denominated a first class farm and will be sold on reasonable terms. My advanced age is the only inducement for selling. Apply to Allen Mayo on the premises, Milo, Nov. 5, 1857.

SOME OLDER MEN AS I REMEMBR THEM an article written by a resident of Brownville, ME
"Mr. Bumps lived in the last house in Brownville, north. On the Prairie farm lived Moses Chandler, an inventor. Faher Ewer, Jacob Works. The road followed the river until it came up opposite his (Jacob Works) home. Jacob Works was considered the best farmer in town. He afterward went to Minnesota.
Solon B. Heath lived on the top of the hill before you get to the schoolhouse. He went to Minnesota also. On the point between the rivers Jim Heath, B.F. Snow, some of whose verses would be interesting to recall. This side of the schoolhouse lived a Rogers family who went to Minnesota.
On the road towards Ebeeme through Orson Swamp lived Mr. Wedgwood, who had three sons and three sons-in-law enter the army.
Where the town-farm is, Mr. Richard Roberts lived. On the other side of the road lived Merm Soule. Moses Tibbetts lived where the Chase place is. Wald Philbrook lived across the road.
Reuben Mayo married the first white girl born in Sebec. He was a very strong man and a great man with a broad-axe. It was said of him that after the tree had been felled and lined, he would take his heavy broad-axe and walk along, and with every blow split the line and hew the timber down square.
He held selectman's office and other offices in town for many year.
He used to yoke his oxen into a two-wheeled hay-rack, pitch in hay for them to eat through the day. His wife would get into the rack, and being a big woman, lie down on the hay, and he would take her visiting, calling for her again at night after his day's work on some building was over.
I have heard her tell that when she first came to Brownville, they had no table and no chairs. One day company came unexpectedly. She took from her trunk a linen table-cloth and spread it on her husband's tool-chest and for chairs used sections of trees sawed off to the right height. She had been saving a little white flour and with that she made white bread - which was not common then. One did not expect a very fancy dinner, but the bill of fare would be hard to beat now: fresh port, moose meat, speckled trout caught at the back door, potatoes roasted in the ashes of the fireplace, there were no stoves of course, - a good cup of tea, maple syrup which they themselves had made, good butter, and molasses doughnuts. Mr. Mayo had taken up a swarm of wild bees.
The whole family used to make candles to sell. Put the wicks on sticks and dip them in warm tallow. I have been at the old house when I was six or seven years old, and picked up the cedar sticks, there were thousands of them at that time.
He had a potato hole on the west side of the river in the bank because it was drier and the water wouldn't get into the dry horseback.
He afterward moved to Minnesota. I have often wondered if the Mayo doctors were any relation to him."

1858, 1861, 1864, 1865, One transaction was with R. D. Roberts, Abbie
Jane's father who bought Long Island (above Sugar Island) in the Pleasant
River. He also sold Round and Grape Islands (about 5 acres) to Allen M.
Heath. Reuben was elected selectman and assessor in 1851 in Brownville, ME.
I also believe he attended the Academy at Belfast, no proof."
(from Susannah North files) He was born on Cape Cod in MA. His father Issac Mayo moved his family
to Piscatasquis, ME. when he was still young. After he and Dorcas
married they moved to Camden Harbor, Knox, ME. Where 11 of their
children were born. Then they moved back to Brownville (1847) where
Aurther was born. He was 13 when the family moved again this time to
Sherberne County, MN. in 1862, US census 1870, Sherburne, MN Some of
their older sons had already moved to MN. by this time. To work in the
timber business in winter & farm in summer. Sons Jacob and Peter were
killed in the Civil War with no bodies returned. June 5, 1880 census for
Princeton, MN. Ruben was living with Hannah & Moses Tibbetts at their
hotel. Widower age 86. Brownville, ME census 1850 listed Ruben as a
farmer with realestate of $200. There was a brick making area on the
farm..

On Ap 21, 1846 Hannah applied for "an act to continue the pensions of
certain widows" passed in Congress June 17, 1844. She declared "that
she was married to the said Isaac Mayo in the month of August in the
year 1780 or 81...That her maiden name was Hannah Cahoon." She lived
with Allen Mayo, her son after her husband's death. Desire Wood
testified that she was at the wedding ceremony and "saw the Rev. Mr.
Dunster then settled minister of said town of Harwick, perform the
ceremony of Marriage and pronounce Husband and Wife the said Isaac Mayo
and Hannah Cahoon..." This info is from a deposition made to the state
of Maine for pension from the Rev. War.
