Excerpt from Roger Lawrenc e's book to be released May 2, 1998 (quoted by
Rick Lyons):
About 150 Abenak is set our from Sillery near Quebec and from the
missions in Maine towards Yo rk, Maine in 1692. They arrived at York by
Sunday morning 25 Jan 1692 and in several parties attacked and burned the
houses and garrisions of York, killin g and capturing the inhabitants.
Taken prisoner in a group of 73 by the India ns, 11 year old Hannah Heard
was taken to Canada. She probably was with the I ndians for a year or so.
By 1694, at the age of thirteen, she had beome a hou se servant for Pierre
Prudhomme, who had probably ransomed her.
At her bapti sm and confirmation as Anne Herd on 10 April 1694 by the
Bishop of Quebec in Notre Dame de Montreal, 13 year old Hanna received
the name of her godmother, Marie Anne. The godmother was Marie Anne
Charles/Chasles, wife of Pierre Pr udhomme, and the godfather was the
surgeon Jean Martinet dit Fonblanche.
The year before her marriage, Anne was godmother at the baptism of
Marie Anne Bi zeu on 24 Oct 1704 at Notre Dame de Montreal.
Anne married twice. After having had a marriage contract drawn up by
Notary Antoine Adhemar on 17 Oct, Anne H erd married first at the age of
24 on 19 October 1705 at Montreal with 26 yea r old Sebastien Cholet dit
Laviolette by whom she had 11 children. at the wed ding service, was
present Philip Robitaille husband of Grizel Warren, a capti ve from Dover,
NH. In Jette, Anne's name is given as Herd dit Prevost, daught er of
Benjamin Herd, shoemaker, and of Elisabeth Roberts, from "Hittehe"(
b aptism) or "Chitchou"(for Cocheco) in New England. Sebastien Cholet was
a wea ver. In May 1710, she was naturalized as Anne Lord, anglais de
Ville-Marie, w ife of Ouabaphon Holet dit Laviolette.
When Sebastien died in April 1728 at th e age of 49 and was buried 14
April 1728 at Pointe Claire PQ, Anne was left w ith only two children at
home. Her youngest daughter had died about one week before her husband,
probably of a contageous diesease. Anne married next, as Marie-Anne Hurd
dit Prevot with widower Claude Sansart dit Le Petit on 01 Aug ust 1730 at
St. Joachim de Pointe Claire PQ. There were no children from this second
marriage and Claude had none from his first wife, was probably about the
same age. In Jette, the names of her parents at the second marriage in
1730 are given as Jean Prevot and Francoise Lamontagne.
Scales (1977) says tha t Anna was captured in 1691-92, but that she
was retund later and that there was no further record. Obviously he was
mistaken on both statements since Ann a Heard was buried as Marie Anne
Prevot, anglaise, on 02 Jan 1750 at St, Joac him de Pointe Claire PQ. She
was about 69 years of age. [Cholet from Rick Lyo ns.FTW]
