STEPHEN BARTLETT
Stephen, born in Newton, Mass. on April 24, 1765, was the fifth son and t he tenth child of the twelve children of Ebenezer and Anna (Ball) Bartlet t. He, like his two brothers, Peregrine and Moses, Sr., settled north of t he Androscoggin River in territory now known as Hanover.
He built his home on land, map location No. 61, then in Sudbury Canada, n ow Hanover, acquired from his father, Ebenezer, and located about 2.8 mil es easterly from where his brother Peregrine built. The home was owned a nd occupied by three generations of Bartletts, with Elhanan and Cyrus foll owing Stephen. On June 6,
1789, Stephen purchased from Joseph Twitchell of Sherbourn, three interv al lots adjacent to his farm. The last owner and occupant was Wesley V. Be an, Sr. The house is still in existence and is located on the Old County R oad, a few hundred feet westerly of the site of the Bartlett Schoolhous e, probably so named because of the many Bartletts who lived in the area.
On October 23, 1787, at the age of 22, Stephen married Dorcas (Barbou r) of Gray who was born on July 19, 1769. Stephen was a farmer by trade a nd worked the farm until it was taken over by his son,
Elhanan. Although the home was about eight-tenths of a mile south of the a ctual gore line, it must have been considered to be within the gore as Ste phen was elected to serve as third assessor in the plantation of Howard Go re in 1826.
He passed away in that part of Bethel, now Hanover, on February 14, 18 32 at the age of 66, and Dorcas passed away in that part of Bethel, now Ha nover, on October 28,1841 at the age of 72 (at cemetery 71). Both are buri ed in Lot 18 in the old section of the Hanover Cemetery. Their son Elhana n, his wife Joanna and their daughter Susan are also buried in the same lo t.

EBENEZER BARTLETT
Ebenezer, the first son and first child of the eight children of Stephen a nd Dorcas (Barbour) Bartlett, was born June 6, 1788. He married Lois (Powe rs), born August 8, 1793, the daughter of Silas and Submit (Bartlett) Powe rs. She gave birth to seven children, five boys and two girls. He liv ed in Howard Gore for quite a few years before moving to a farm near Loc ke Mills. Ebenezer was, by trade, a farmer and according to the Histo ry of Bethel by Lapham, was at one time engaged in the manufacturing of wa ter pumps. He was elected to serve as second assessor in the plantati on of Howard Gore in 1826, 1832, and 1836. He also served as collect or of taxes in 1835 and 1836.
Ebenezer passed away in 1857 at the age of 69. Lois passed away in 18 66 at the age of 73. Both are buried in Lot 80 in the East Bethel Cemetery .

ELHANAN BARTLETT
Elhanan, the second son and second child of the eight children of Steph en and Dorcas (Barbour) Bartlett, was born in Howard Gore on Septemb er 2, 1791. On July 3, 1817, at the age of 25, he married Joanna (Willis ), born March 31, 1794, the daughter of Jonas and Susan (Barbour) Willi s. He lived all his life on his father's homestead, the Stephen Bartlett P lace, map location No. 90, where he practiced his trade of being a farme r. Although Elhanan was active and interested in town affairs, he did n ot run for an elective office until 1855 when he was 64 years old. He serv ed as second selectman for five years, from 1855 through 1859. He also ser ved on many of the town and school committees.
Elhanan received his early education in the Bartlett School, which
at that time was under the jurisdiction of Bethel School District No.1.
Joanna passed away in Hanover on October 21, 1863 at the age of69
(at cemetery 68) and Elhanan passed away in Hanover on Feb. 24,
1868 at the age of 76. Both are buried in Lot 18 in the old section of Han over Cemetery, along with their daughter, Susan B. and Elhanan's . fath er and mother.

1 He was banner-bearer of the Normans, and in 1050 was at the Duke's court. In 1054 he participated in the victory over the French at Mortemer, and was sent by William to alarm the King of France with the news. About 1060 he, Hugh de Grandmesnil and Ernald d'Echauffour were deprived of their inheritances and banished. In revenge he and Ernald burned the town of St. Evroul, but in 1063 they were recalled and their lands restored. He was summoned to a council upon the death of Edward the Confessor and the coronation of Harold as King of England, and he fought at the Battle of Hastings. He established his residence at Flamsted, Hertfordshire, but was given estates in many counties. About 1078 he supported Robert Curthose against the King, and in 1080 he went on pilgrimage to Spain, returning to give gifts to the abbey of St. Evroul. In 1081 he was with the King at Winchester; after William's death in 1087 he was one of the Norman nobles who expelled royal garrisons from their castles. In 1088 he served in the war against Maine. When his wife angered her sister-in-law, the Count of Evreux laid seige against Conches; this was broken with the help of adherents of William Rufus. After the death of Rufus he and the Count of Evreux invaded the Count of Meulan's barony of Beaumont in August 1100, in retaliation for intrigues with the king against them. Services for Robert F. Witham, 61, of 43 Kasson St., Johnstown will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Crouse and Son Funeral Home, Johnstown with the Rev. Frank Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Witham died Tuesday morning in the Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. He was born Aug 3, 1913 in Withamsville, OH to the late John L. and Mary Fries Witham.
He was a retired employee of the Technical Rubber Co., Johnstown and a 1934 graduate of Johnstown High Sshool. He was a member of the Central Lodge 86 F&AM of Johnstown and Scottish Rite of Columbus.
Surviving are his wife Nola Barcus Witham; three brothers: James of Croton, Ralph L. of Sarasota, FL, and Richard of Boliver, OH; four sisters: Mrs. Charles Ashbrook of Johnstown, Mrs. Charles Riddofo of Columbus, Mrs. Jess Sandy of New Philadelphia, and Miss Janet Witham of Dallas, TX. Two brothers are dead.
