veteran of the French & Indian War, marching to Fort William Henry in
August 1757 under Thomas Wilder. He also served in Oliver

him serving 1758-60. Reuben served as a private in the Revolutionary War.

John,
I noticed on WorldConnect that you show that the John Wyman who married
Abiah Spaulding was a son of William Wyman and Love Chick. That couple
did
have a son Johnof almost the same age, and who lived a while in
Winslow, but he wasn't theJohn in Winslow who md Abiah.
The John who md Abiah was a son of Reuben Wymanand Elizabeth Bancroft,
which helps explain a lot - e.g. a son named Bancroft, etc. If you want
to
verify, I would suggest as a starter that you consult Wyman Genealogy,
Vol
1, by Thomas Bellows Wyman Jr., Charlestown, Massachusetts. It was in
the
collection of the New England Historic & Genealogical Society, Boston, ca
1993. It contains considerable data on Reuben, his descendants and
forebears. An earlier version was printed in the Register, vol3, pp.
33-8, and was reprinted in pamphlet form.
Thought you would want to know.

While at Wickwire Spencer Steel Co in Palmer, MA I think he was involvedin wire cable design, documenting designs already in use and designingnew configurations.
At American Brake Shoe, Mahwah, NJ I remember him talking a lot aboutCrossing Frogshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railroad_switch#Frog_.28common_crossing.29perhaps refining designs or selecting better alloys for use in makingfrogs.
His main activity focused on Powder Metallurgy. He developed materialsfor use in automotive braking systems. Both for the conventional (at thetime) drum brake systems and later in the now conventional disc brakingsystems. ABS was in competition with Raybestos (sp?) in the automotivemarket.
He became very involved in the design and production of the brakingsystem for the B52 Bomber in the 50’s. I worked one summer at Brake Shoerunning a dynamometer, testing the various friction material compoundsfor the B52.
Howard also was innovative in early computer simulation. As I recallwhen the Sperry Univac came out – he wrote a program that would simulatethe braking requirements of a train running from New York City toWashington. He inputted the terrain profile for the route, all thestarts and stops, speeds, etc. Then he set up the metallurgicalcharacteristics for the braking system… things like specific heat, thermal conductivity, density and whatever. He then used finite analysisto determine temperatures that would be attained during the run, varyingfriction coefficients, wear characteristics and god knows what else. Itwas very useful to the company and I am not sure but he might have beenthe first or one of the first to ever do this kind of stuff. And aalsoremember that all this stuff was done with punched cards. Judy might beable to shed more light on this.
He had many patents. 57

He was in the Navy during WWII
His hobbies were gold mining, golf and guns
He was an excellent wood worker
R. G. Huntress has been named manager of wire rope sales for theCalifornia Wire Cloth Corporation, a subsidiary of the Colorado Fuel andIron Corporation 49 58

General Notes: Husband - Edward Bangs
Arriving at Plymouth in 1623 on the Anne, Edward Bangs was probably born ca. 1591, for he said he was age eighty-six in 1677. He was one of the Purchasers, and he was on the 1632/33 freeman list. He was one of those chosen to lay out the 21 acre lots in the 1627 division, along with William Bradford, John Howland, Edward Winslow, Francis Cooke, and Joshua Pratt. With Myles Standish and others, Edward Bangs was chosen in 1633 to divide the meadow in the bay equally. He was also on committees to assess the entire colony for public costs, and he served on various juries and other public service committees. He appears to be a man who was responsible and trusted. In a record where he was surety for another, he was called a yeoman. General Notes: Wife - Rebecca Hobart
Plymouth Colony Records-Vol 12-pg209:
Rebecca joined her husband in a deed of 22 June 1651 in selling land in
Plymouth.
Robert C. Anderson in his book "The Great Migration Begins" Vol 1 pg 90:
citing the Hobart diary, Mary Walton Ferris suggested that Rebecca was
daughter of Edmund Hobart of Hingham, but this entry may not have
existed, and the identity of Rebecca ? Bangs remains (NEHGR 121:4,56)
The Hobart Journal, NEHGR, 1967, Vol 121:
pg 4:
The Hobart Journal has been extensively used and quoted, not to mention
misquoted. Ferris' very carefully done Dawes-Gates Ancestry gives the
following regarding Rebecca Hobard who married Edward Bangs (Vol. 2, p.
66): "she may have been the dau. of Edmund Hobart of Hingham and the
sister of Rev. Peter Hobart of that place. The assertion has been made
that a diary kept by the Rev. Peter referred to a trip of his to Eastham
to attend the funeral of his 'sister Bangs' and since he had a sister,
Rebecca, not known to have married otherwise, it is sometimes assumed
that this may have been she." No such reference is found in the Hobart
Journal. This may point to misquotation or it may indicate access to
Peter(2) Hobart's original journal and an omission by Dea. David Hobart
in his copy.
pg 56: (THE EDITORS NOTES)
We begin in this issue the publication of the Rev. Peter Hobart's
"Diary," carefully collated and transcribed bythe Rev. Clarence Edward
Egan, Jr., of White Plains, N. Y. The Rev. Mr. Egan has called attention
to the fact that the "original" diary in the possession of the
Massachusetts Historical Society appears to be almost entirely in the
handwriting of Dea. David Hobart, rather than that of his father, and
hence is probably a copy made by the son. The Editor suggests that, in
light ofthe "quotation" used by Mrs. Mary Walton Ferris in "The
Dawes-Gates Ancestry" (see Mr. Egan's introductory note), David Hobart
may have excerpted from his father's diary the records of baptisms,
marriages and deaths. Peter Hobart,in a diary probably would have
recorded his journey to attend "Sister Bangs'funeral," but the son might
not have considered this a "ministerial act" or a record pertaining to a
member of the Hingham parish. This leads to a reiteration of the
question raised by Mr. Egan: was there an original (perhaps more
expansive) diary from which David Hobart extracted the vital records? If

In 1641, he was granted 80 acres of land at Warren's Wells, and in 1642 he was allowed to exchange some of it for land closer to his house. He moved to Nauset with the Prence group, and in 1647 he was a supervisor of the highways there. !See notes for his wife. 'The Great Migration...' gives a list of the heirs of Thomas Prence who on 10 June 1676, through their attorney Josiah Winslow, sold to Constant Southworth, treasurer and agent of Plymouth Colony, 'all that our dwelling house, messuage or tenement' in Plymouth 'at a place commonly called Plain Dealing'. Among the names were Jonathan Sparrow and Hannah his wife, daughter of Thomas Prence. [Plymouth Colony Land Records 4:124] 'Boston Transcript Gen. Notes, Queries & Answers' of 16 May 1938 says he was son of Richard and Pandora Sparrow and his will is in 'Pope's Pioneers' probated 11 Oct 1674, age given 86. Other references given, Eastham Records, Anc. Landmarks of Plymouth, Mayflower Desc 14, Freeman Gen. and Foster Records by Stephen Foster. The will must be that of the father, Richard, as that age would make him born 1588, 40 years older than Hannah.

General Notes: Husband - Solomon Sawyer
On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph G. Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no sources. In that letter she wrote:
..."[Solomon and Lydia (Horn) Sawyer] lived at Falmouth, Gorham (in 1770), and Cape Elizabeth before going to Chebeague to settle. Solomon was the son of Jacob and Sarah (Wallis) Sawyer who came to Maine"
The following is from "The Sawyer Family of Elliotsville (Piscataquis Co., Maine), Descendants of James Sawyer of Gloucester, Mass. and Their Kinfolk, The Drakes" 3rd ed, revised 1978-79, by Fred E. Sawyer (p.18):
. "Solomon Sawyer of Falmouth, Me., b.14 May 1728, Falmouth, Cumberland Co., Maine, son of Jacob and Sarah (WALLIS) SAWYER, M. 16 Sep 1752, Falmouth, Me., Ruth BANGS, is said to have removed to Gorham, Me., abt 1777.
. Children, birth place not determined: (Surname SAWYER):
. 46) 1. SOLOMON, b. abt 1754, m. 10 Oct 1779, Phebe STROUT.
. Note - There was a Solomon SAWYER who m. LYDIA HORN 17 MAY 1765, Cape Elizabeth, Me. He is thought to have had Ann who m. 1790 John HAMILTON, and Ruth who m. 1794, Ambrose HAMILTON. This could be part of this family. (Hist. Cousins & Little Johns Islands)
. References: V.R. Falmouth Maine; V.R. Cape Elizabeth Maine."
In his "General Index of the Sawyer Families of New England Prior to 1900", the same author, Fred E Sawyer, in 1983, asserts that Solomon Sawyer married both Ruth Bangs and Lydia Horn (p.92):
. "Solomon, chr. Sep 1730, Falmouth, Me., s. Jacob, b.1687 & Sarah Wallis; m. 16 Sep 1752, Falmouth, Me., Ruth Bangs. Ch. Solomon, b. ca. 1754, of Gorham, Me., m. 10 Oct 1779, Phebe Strout.
. Solomon m. (2) 17 May 1765, Falmouth, Me., Lydia Horn. Ch. include:
. Ann, m. ca. 1790, John Hamilton.
. Ruth, m. Ambrose Hamilton. [our ancestors.]
. The Solomon Sawyer family moved to Gorham, Me., ca. 1770.
. Ref: Hist Cousins & Little Johns Island, Me.; Rec 2nd Parish Falmouth, Me.; V.R. Falmouth, Me."
"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart p. 134, shows 3 children, Solomon, Ann, & Ruth. Chart does not name any wife. Has note that he "bought 37 1/2 acres on West End of Chebeague from heirs of Zachariah Chandler in 1791.
