I have some information on your Sarah A. Chandler and John Knowlton Chandler. This information comes from a phone conversation, dated March 3, 1992 between Pearl Snyder and J. C. Allee, Jr. concerning their grand parents and great grand parents. My great grandfather, John Chandler Allee, Sr. was raised by his aunt, Sarah Angeline Chandler after the death of his mother in 1878. Sarah was born Dec. 23, 1852 and died December 19, 1930. At the time of her death, her last name was Vaden, having remarried after the death of John. She was indeed married to the Chandler brothers of Chandlerville, IL: first to Charles Ray and then to John Kno(w)lton. From family names, John Chandler was well thought of -- first my great grandfather was named John Chandler Allee. He named one of his sons John Chandler Allee, Jr. and my grandparents named one of their sons John Knowlton Henry (he also has a son named John Knowlton Henry, Jr.). I'm just getting started with this -- if I find out anything else, I'll pass it along. Regards, Elizabeth

Title: State of Maine became the 23rd State on March 15, 1820Note: What is now the state of Maine was, bef ore statehood, called the District of Maine and belonged to Massachusetts.Text : 1622 Patent - The first patent establishing the Province of Maine was granted on August 10, 1622 to Ferdinando Gorges and John Mason by the Plymouth Council for New England, which itself had been granted a royal patent by James I to th e coast of North America between the 40th to the 48th parallel "from sea to sea ". This first patent encompassed the coast between the Merrimack and Kennebec r ivers, as well as an irregular parcel of land betweent the headwaters of the tw o rivers. In 1629, Gorges and Mason agreed to split the patent at the Piscataqu a River, with Mason retaining the land south of the river as the Province of Ne w Hampshire. The first Province of Maine failed, however, because of lack of fu nds and colonial settlement. 1639 Patent - In 1639 Gorges obtained a renewed patent, the Gorges Patent, for the area between the Piscataqua and Kennebec Riv ers, in the form of a royal charter from Charles I of England. The area was rou ghly the same as that covered in the 1622 patent after the 1629 split with Maso n. The second colony also foundered for lack of money and settlers. 1664 Pate nt - In 1664, the Province was revived for a second time with a grant by Charle s II of England to James, Duke of York, in the same year that James was granted the Province of New York. Unlike the previous two patents, the Province of Mai ne as stipulated in the 1664 charter encompassed the areas north of the Kennebe c River to the St. Croix River. This territory, which had previously been calle d the Territory of Sagadahock, forms the eastern portion of the present day sta te of Maine. The patent to James for this territory was renewed in 1674 and sur vives in York County. Absorption by Massachusetts - In 1677, the land between the Piscataqua and the St. Croix, including all the territory in the previous grants, was sold by Sir Ferdinando Gorges' grandson to a Boston merchant named James Usher. Usher then gave a deed of the province to the Massachusetts Bay Co lony in the same year, and from 1691 was part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Cession of Maine By Massachusetts - A constitution was adopted by the pe ople of Maine at town meetings on December 6, 1819. On February 25, 1820 the Ma ssachusetts legislature formed the District of Maine in preparation for Congres s to admit the State of Maine to the union, which it did on March 3, 1820.

admitted a freeman.
On 1 Apr. 1634 Samuel Godberson, son of Godbert Godberson of New

the government. The bond was released. Richard was on the jury several
times while living in Plymouth and was a member of the "Grand Inquest" in
June of 1644.
In Mar. 1638/9 Richard was granted 40 acres of land on the southeast of

Percival Lowle undoubtably was born somewhere in County Somerset, England, where his ancestors for more than four centuries are recorded to have lived. He was born in 1571 and spent his years as a young man at or near Kingston-Seymour in County Somerset where his father Richard Lowle resided. At the age of 26 he held the office of Assessor of Kingston-Seymour. He is next found in the seaport city of Bistol in the West of England engaged in merchandising, chiefly of imported wares, carrying the name of Percival Lowle and Company. In the year 1639 he severed connections with England and with his wife, Rebecca, and two sons, John and Richard, his daughter Joane and their families, came in the "Jonathan" to the Massachusetts Colony. In June of that year they settled at Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.
Accompanying the Lowle's were Joane's husband, John Oliver and his partner William Gerrish, his clerk Anthony Somerby, Anthony's brother Henry, and Richard Pole (who was apprenticed to John).
On the Town Rate of Newbury, 1688 "Mr. Per Lowle" was placed for "2 heads, 1 horse, 5 plowlands, 10 meadows, 1 house, 4 oxen, 4 cows, 1 3-year old, 1 2-year old, 1 1-year old, 10 sheep, and 2 hogs."
General Notes: Child - Captain Gideon Lowell
1690- was a soldier in the first expedition to Canada.
1692- he was a "cordwainer" (shoemaker).
1706- called a "mariner" and "coaster". Calls himself a "yeoman" in his will of 1748 and when the
will was executed in 1753 he is called "captain".
1718/1/19- purchased 53 acres of land in "Almesbury", MA. It was upland, butting on Powow and
Merrimac Rivers.
1719- moved to Amesbury, MA and settled there at what was called the "Ferry." Tradition states
that he opened a street through his land in Amesbury; built a house for each of his seven sons
and the street was named Lowell St.
1728-29- he and his brother, Samuel, purchased land in Falmouth (now Portland), ME. He never
moved there but he transferred the land to his son Abner.
"Gideon was a sea captain. He built, owned and commanded his vessels...one was a 'sloupe' of 50 or 60 tons burden. He sailed widely and took his wife, Miriam, with him often. Probably some of his children were born while on these voyages. Gideon was a bold and successful voyager; he amassed a considerable fortune. It is probable that in his voyages, the King's revenue was not always considered, nor did he hesitate to run-up aside of and board by force a French or Spanish
craft when opportunity arose."
He owned a wharf near "Ames" wharf at the mouth of the Powow River where he landed his cargoes of "rhum" and "Shugar" from the West Indies -- or rice, resin, and tar from other far places.
WILL OF GIDEON LOWELL (1748)
"I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth my wife, 1 cow and 1 chest with a Drawer at ye bottom marked E.L. and also 1 Lenning Wheele which she Generally useth and also all ye provisions that I have of all sorts whatsoever for her to Have to to hold free and cleare forever.
I give unto said Elizabeth Ye use and Improvement of 1/3 of my Household goods as followeth viz: 1 bed curtains with the bedstead and ye furniture be longing to said bed which is the bed I generally lodge on in the west room of my dwelling house together with so much of the rest of said household goods as shall make out 1/3 part thereof together with ye suller under said house as she shall chose with convenient passing and repassing; and convenience of yard room for laying of wood before ye door and also of Improvement of 1 acre of land and in my field on ye westerly side of ye brook, ye above said cow to be kept winter and summer by my sons that shall enjoy my homestead."
Inventory of Gideon's estate consisted of "Real homestead living about 35 acres with about 4 acres of swamp called Ye Great Swamp and buildings." Amongst items of personal estate was an "old Negro good for £000-000-00!"
Amesbury Union Cemetery in Amesbury, MA:
A very large cemetery, kept in excellent condition. Even the very old part of the cemetery is mowed and carefully trimmed around each stone. The cemetery is located on rolling knolls, dotted with tall evergreen trees, just at the outskirts of town. The poet, John Greenleaf Whittier, is also buried in this cemetery.
There are many Lowells buried here. About the oldest stone, or at least the oldest Lowell stone is that of "Mrs. Mary Lowle, wife of Gideon, Died 1734, aged 63." No stone for Gideon. However, there are wide spaces with no markers or stones and can be assumed that other graves are here.

The 1860 census for Yarmouth, Cumberland Co., Maine, (Ancestry.com

. Andrew J. Hamilton, age 31, farmer, no estate , no personal estate, he &
entire household born in Maine.
. Cornelia S., age 26.
. Wm. J., age 6.
. Dorcas Ross, age 63.
Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart, p.106. He died in the south
fighting in the Civil War. His farm now belongs to Groves.
This is obviously a confusing relationship. Here is my educated speculation:
The Dorcas Ross listed in Andrew's household is certainly the mother of
Pamela Ross. This would be strong evidence for the marriage of Pamela to
Andrew. However, "Stone Sloops of Chebeague" gives William Jackson Curit
as Pamela's only husband. It would seem likely that Pamela first married
W.J. Curit and that they had a son, William J.. Mr Curit died and Pamela
married a second time to A.J. Hamilton. Pamela then died before bearing
any more children. Mr. Hamilton raised his stepson. Pamela's mother moved
into the household. Mr. Hamilton married a second time to Cornelia. This
seems to be the only sequence of events that would bring all the facts into
harmony.

The Leyden poll tax of 15 Oct. 1622 listed Roger and Isabel and chn Samu
el and Sara. They prbably came to Plymouth in 1629 or 1630, when, accordi

01. James Chilton was the oldest passenger on board the Mayflower. He w
as bornbef. 1563 in Canterbury, Kent, England. Around 1600, he moved to S
andwich, England. By 1615 he was in Leyden, Holland with some of his chil
dren. On April 28, 1619, James and his daughter Isabella were caug
ht in an anti-Armenian riot and James was hit in the head with a large sto
ne and required the services of the town surgeon, Jacob Hey. On Septemb
er 6, 1620, the Mayflower left Plymouth, England. On board was James, h
is wife Susanna, and daughter Mary. Both James and Susanna died before t
he Mayflower arrived. Mary was orphaned and was assumed to have joined t
he Myles Standish household. She earnedthe distinction of being the fir
st female to step ashore at Plymouth. She later married John Winslow w
ho arrived on the ship "Fortune". The claim by John Hunt in The Americ
an Genealogist 38:244-245 that his wife was possibly Susanna Furner has be
en recently disproven on the basis of the discovery of Susanna Furner's ba
ptism record, which indicates she was far too young (only 12) to be marri
ed and having children in 1586.
02. Isabella, daughter of James was born on January 15, 15
Canturbury, Kent, England. She did not come withJames on the Mayfl
ower, but arrived at Plymouth at a later date.

Roger Chandler, possibly related to Edmond Chandler, q.v., was in Leiden records as a say-weaver from Colchester, England, and he was married at Leiden on 21 July 1615 to Isabel Chilton . He and his wife and two children, Samuel and Sarah, were living at Leiden on 15 October 1622. They arrived at Plymouth sometime after the 1627 cattle division. His wife was the daughter of 1620 Mayflower passenger James Chilton, and their descendants are given in Mayflower Families Vol 2, which gives references for additional information. He was on the 1633 freeman list, and he later moved to Duxbury.

Roger Chandler was born on April 04, 1580 in Colchester, England. He married Isabella Chilton on July 21, 1615 in Leyden, Holland. She was the daughter of Mayflower passenger James Chilton. The Leyden poll tax of 15 Oct. 1622 includes "Rogier Chandelaer, Isabel Chandelaer" his wife and children Samuel and Sara. Roger and his family probably came to Plymouth in 1629 or 1630, when according to Bradford the Leyden contingent arrived. He was taxed in Plymouth 25 March 1633, and listed as a freeman the same year-- the earliest record of him in this country. He was enumerated among those able to bear arms in Duxbury in 1643 and sold land there in 1644; he was listed among freemen of Duxbury in a tally presumed taken in 1658. In October 1665 the Plymouth Court granted 150 acres of land to the three (unnamed) daughters of Roger Chandler deceased.

Note that "Mayflower Families In Progress" series' volume on "George Soule of the Mayflower and His Descendants for Four Generations", 2nd ed., published by The General Society of Mayflower Descendants in 1995, identifies a Sarah Chandler as 2nd wife of Moses Soule, Moses Simmon's grandson. I sense that there may be some confusion here.

General Notes: Wife - Isabella Chilton
