Born in England ca. 1617, John Bundy died in Taunton 1 May 1674. His moth
er was a sister to Susanna Alley, the wife of Philip Alley of Boston (MF 2

rch 1635/36,and approved, with Bundy's consent, his remaining term bei
ng transferred to William Brewster, who had made a settlement with Mounteg

John Bundy was apparently a carpenter: The first known record of John Bun

On 21 August 1637 Bundy was found guilty of lewd and uncivil carriagetowar

iam Brewster assigned his interest in John Bundy's remaining five yea
rs of service to his son Jonathan Brewster (PCR 1:107).
On 15 August 1645 John Bundy was one of the soldiers from Plymouth who we

1) Martha Chandler, daughter of Roger and Isabella (Chilton) Chandler a

On 3 June 1662 he was granted land in Taunton with some "first-born childr

aughters of Roger Chandler be given fifty acres each near Taunton (PCR 4:2

The name BUNDY is said to be derived from the "Forest of Bundy" near Paris
,
France. The Bundy's being among the adventurers who accompanied William, T
he
Conqueror of England; and who subsequently settled in Kent.

Born in England ca. 1617, John Bundy died in Taunton 1 May 1674. His moth
er was a sister to Susanna Alley, the wife of Philip Alley of Boston (MF 2
:12). On 6 March 1636137 the Court of Assistants noted he was bound as a s
ervant toGriffin Mountegue (of the Bay Colony) for eight years from 14 Ma
rch 1635/36,and approved, with Bundy's consent, his remaining term bei
ng transferred to William Brewster, who had made a settlement with Mounteg
ue (PCR 1:51).
John Bundy was apparently a carpenter: The first known record of John Bun
dy in America is dated 14 March 1635 (he would be 18 yrs old), when he ent
ered into an agreement with Griffin Montague of Boston-Brookline, for 8 ye
ars as carpenter’s apprentice [Plymouth Colony records, 1:51]; on 6 Mar
ch 1636 John Bundy acknowledged himself as content to serve the remaind
er of his term with Elder Wm. Brewster, who in 1638 assigned over Bundy
’s service to his son Jonathan Brewster.
On 21 August 1637 Bundy was found guilty of lewd and uncivil carriagetowar
ds Elizabeth Heybell, in the house of her master, William Brewster, andw
as sentenced to be severely whipped (PCR 1 :65). On 8 January 1638139 Will
iam Brewster assigned his interest in John Bundy's remaining five yea
rs of service to his son Jonathan Brewster (PCR 1:107).
On 15 August 1645 John Bundy was one of the soldiers from Plymouth who we
nt on the expedition against the Narragansetts (PCR 2:90). He married (
1) Martha Chandler, daughter of Roger and Isabella (Chilton) Chandler a
nd (2)Ruth (?Ratchel) Gurney, he had childrenby both wives(MF 2:12).
On 3 June 1662 he was granted land in Taunton with some "first-born childr
en" and others, and on 3 October 1665 his request was granted that three d
aughters of Roger Chandler be given fifty acres each near Taunton (PCR 4:2
0,110). His will dated April 1681, proved 29 October 1681, stated he was a
ged sixty-four or thereabouts, and he mentioned his wife, "the children
," son James Bundy, "my sons," and "the sons by
this wife." See TAG 27:1, 37:212; MF 2:12.
Biographical sketch by James Labor, Thurso, Caithness, Scotland -
1668 Taunton North Purchase
Purchase of a tract of land in which the town of Easton was later s
ettled.
In the year 1662 Captain Thomas Willet succeeded in purchasing a tra
ct of land from the Indians of the area. This purchased was called the No
rth Purchase of the Indians. Thirty-five men from Taunton were involv
ed in this purchase. However several years passed before these Taunton m
en came into possession of their purchase. A small part of this purcha
se was granted to Rehoboth, titled the Rehoboth North Purchase. After t
he men came into possession of the North Purchase, a small fifty square mi
le area remained (Chaffin, 17).
This area was a large and irregular strip of land, which was unoccupie
d. "It was bounded on the north by the line that separated the coloni
es of Plymouth and Massachusetts, east by Bridgewater, south by the northe
rn boundary of Taunton, and west by Rehoboth North-Purchase,now Attleboro
ugh" (Chaffin, 19). Undoubtedly the settlers of Taunton desired this lan
d. Several settlers of Taunton entered into discussions for this land pur
chase. The following is an excerpt of the deposition of Thomas Leonard, o
ne of the interested participants.
Then it was asked how much it was andhow it lay: said Gentlemen answer
ed it was all the land between Taunton bounds and Rehoboth bounds, and bet
ween Taunton bounds and the bay line home to Bridgewater Bounds, excepti
ng two parcells that was granted unto others before. So we made a barga
