The following obituary was written by his son, Jim, and appeared in the "South Bend Tribune" newspaper of 28 Aug 2002:
" Donald Allen Stevens
. 7 Feb.1926 - 24 Aug. 2002
". Donald Allen Stevens, age 76, of 50623 K Jay Lane, in South Bend, passed away after a battle with lung cancer on Saturday, August 24, 2002 at 7:35 p.m. at the St. Joseph County Hospice House. Don was a lifelong resident of South Bend, raising his family at 1005 N. Brookfield Street, where he lived for almost 50 years prior to moving to his late address about two years ago. The family were members of Holy Cross Catholic Church.
. He was born Donald Allen Steszewski in South Bend on February 7, 1926, the son Anthony and Adeline Jegier Steszewski and the grandson of Polish immigrants. He grew up in the old Polish section on the west side of South Bend. He had his family's name anglicized to Stevens in 1965.

They returned to South Bend where Don secured an engineering position with the Bendix Corporation. He worked at Bendix his entire career, designing jet aircraft engines and power steering systems for automobiles. He retired in 1980.
. Don's hobby over the years was television repair. He had a reputation as an able handyman and will be remembered for his generosity in giving his time to fix almost anything for his neighbors. For many years, up to just a couple months prior to his passing, Don could be seen almost every morning walking through his neighborhood to get his exercise, regardless of the weather.
. Six children survive: James Allen, born 1949, of Pittsboro, Indiana, Judith Ann Black, born 1953, of South Bend, David Wayne, born 1954, of New Orleans, Edward Paul, born 1957, of Mishawaka, Richard Allen, born 1960, of South Bend, and Thomas Allen, born 1962, of Osceola. From a letter written on 10 July 1983 by Rose Goepfrich Schneider, Rudy's niece:
.....".....Rudolph, who lost an arm at a very early age (18) during a summer job at Studebakers, settled for a Notre Dame education with a Cum Laude degree in engineering. He designed hundreds of patents and held the very responsible position of Chief Engineer with the Bendix automotive brakes division, He married Nellie Mansfield and added Joan, Charles, Helen, and Margaret to third generation Goepfriches. Rudy died on July 4, 1974."
Over the years, Rudy and Nellie had four children and 21 grandchildren. Rudy lost one of his hands in an industrial accident while working at Studebaker. Realizing that he now had no future as a factory worker, he determined to get an education at the University of Notre Dame. He became an engineer and spent his career in the employ of Bendix Corp automobile brake division. He was responsible for hundreds of patents over the years and in his later years traveled all over the world for Bendix defending their patent claims. In the 1940's they built a cottage on Long Lake near Three Rivers, Michigan. This was used extensively as a vacation home for the entire family and is still in the family to this day.
Obituary taken from The South Bend Tribune (died July 4, 1974):

General Notes: Wife - Nellie Jeanette Mansfield
. I, Jim Stevens, author of this database, remember Nellie, my grandmother well. As a child, we lived only about half a mile from my grandparents home at 1109 Cleveland Avenue. I used to walk over there and visit often. Grandma always had a dish of candy available and would always let me drink a bottle of Coca-Cola. I enjoyed listening to LP records with Grandma on her phonograph. Some of my fondest boyhood memories were of time spent at Grandpa & Grandma's cottage at Long Lake, near Three Rivers, Michigan. As an adult, I enjoyed talking with Grandma about "the old days".
. Years after Grandpa died, Grandma finally decided to move in with her son, Chuck, in Granger. After a time, Grandma decided that she did not want to be a burden and moved to the apartment on Travers Circle.
. I shall never forget how I saw the providence of God at work when Grandma died. My visits with grandma were not very frequent during her last years. She was in good health and her death was quite sudden and unexpected. At that time, I was a member of a church that held a Sunday evening service. I almost always attended. The Sunday one week before she died, for no good reason, I decided not to attend evening service, but instead took a poinsettia, my Christmas gift, to Grandma at her apartment. I ended up staying for quite a while and we had one of the best visits we had had in a long time. I never remotely suspected that that would be the last time I would speak with her. No one will ever convince me that I was not responding a divine whisper in my ear when I decided to visit that evening!
Following is Nellie's obituary from the 21 Dec 1987 edition of the "South Bend Tribune":
. Nellie J. Goepfrich, 81, of 728 Travers Circle, Mishawaka, died at 2:47 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Goepfrich was born Apr. 25, 1906, in Yarmouth, Maine, and had lived in South Bend most of her life. On Jan. 25, 1927, in South Bend, she married Rudolph Goepfrich. He died July 4, 1974. She is survived by three daughters, Joan Stevens and Margaret Smudzinski [should be Zmudzinski], both of South Bend, and Helen Collins of Mishawaka; a son, Charles J., of Granger; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Viola Tomaska of Dayton, Ohio, Gertrude Goepfrich of Venice, Fla., and Printha Radecki of Kalamazoo [Michigan].

General Notes: Husband - William Sheldon Phillips
William Phillips was born in 1893, probably in the house of his grandfather Elias, in Unionville, MO. His parents left Nebraska in 1892, but spent some time in Unionville before relocating to Bagley, Guthrie Co. IA. in 1894/95.
In his youth, William was variously located at his uncle John Peterman’s in Bagley, his grandparents’ in MO., and his step-father’s in IA.
In 1914 he was in Marysville, Butte Co. CA., with his brother Maurice (who remained in California).
In 1917 he joined his step-father and mother in Fort Scott, KS, where he attended college.
In 1927 he married Helen Golden, in Fond Du Lac, WI. At this time he was a salesman for Long Bell Lumber.
In 1933 the Phillips family moved to Wilmette IL, where William took a sales job with Marathon Electric.
In 1937, on a business trip to Indianapolis, he contracted pneumonia and died.
General Notes: Wife - Helen Marie Golden
She grew up in Louisiana, where her father owned a lumber company in the Shreveport area. In 1910, they returned to Wisconsin.
After her husband’s death, Helen Phillips moved with her sons to Green Bay, WI, where her brother William (Bud) lived. After her husband’s death Helen became the first female principal of Green Bay.
General Notes: Child - James Golden Phillips
In 1948, James entered a monastery in DePere, WI.
His brother Bill died when a storm overturned his boat while fishing on Green Bay, and soon after, James left the order.
In 1951 he joined the Air Force and was sent to Korea. Returning safely, he moved to Milwaukee, WI, and began his career as a paper salesman.
In 1961, he married Kathleen Hayes. They have four children.
