NOTES ON WILLIAM MONTGOMERY (1675 - 1731) AND HIS ARRIVAL IN THE COLONIES / AMERICA:
John and Isabella (Elizabeth) had three sons named William, Hugh, and Robert. This means that Hugh Montgomery, (1689-1767) had father named Robert, and two uncles named Hugh and William. This does show one thing, that these three names do absolutely run in the family. It would not be unusual for Robert to follow his father John's naming pattern for his own sons, when he started his own family.
So, there they were at the beginning, in Ireland, before they left, the Montgomery brothers, all part of same group which would go to the new world . . .
In the Spring of 1718, a body of Scotch-Irish from Northern Ireland sent a petition, signed by 319 representative men on 26 March 1718(1), to Governor Shiite of Massachusetts Bay in the New World requesting land for settlement. Governor Shute was in the third year of his administration of the colony. He was an old soldier of King William, a Lieutenant-Colonel under Marlborough in the Queen Anne Wars and had been wounded in one of the great battles in Flanders. The Rev. William Boyd was dispatched from Ulster to Boston, with the petition, as an agent of the Scotch-Irish to express their desire for settlement in New England. The petition read as follows:
"We whose names are underwritten, Inhabitants of ye North of Ireland, Doe in our own names, and in the names of many others, our Neighbors, Gentlemen, Ministers, Farmers, and Tradesmen, Commissionate and appoint our trusty and well beloved friend, the Reverend Mr. William Boyd, of Macasky, to His Excellency, the Right Honorable Collonel Samuel Suitte, Governour of New England, and to assure His Excellency of our sincere and hearty Inclination to Transport ourselves to that very excellant and renowned Plantation upon our obtaining from His Excellency suitable incouragement. And further to act and Doe in our Names as his prudence shall direct. Given under our hands this 26th day of March, Anno Dom. 1718."
Excerpt From: The Scots-Irish: The Thirteenth Tribe, by Raymond Campbell Paterson
The Real Cause of the Emigration:
"The Ulster Presbyterians had endured, and survived, past waves of religious discrimination, and would most likely have continued to thrive in the face of official hostility. But in the early years of the new century they were faced with an additional challenge, one that threatened the whole basis of their economic existence in Ireland. By 1710, most of the farm leases granted to the settlers in the 1690’s had expired. New leases were withheld until the tenants agreed to pay greatly increased rents, which many could simply not afford to do. Rather than submit to these new conditions, whole communities, led by their ministers, began to take ship for the Americas. A new exodus was about to begin.
The Scots-Irish migrants who left Ulster in 1718 hailed from two particular districts in County Londonderry. The first group were from the Bann Valley area north of Garvagh and Kilrea, which included the parishes of Aghadowey, Macosquin, Kilrea, Dunboe, and Ballywillin. The second group came from the Foyle Valley area including the Laggan of County Donegal and parts of counties Londonderry and Tyrone, north of Strabane.
In 1719, the year after the first great wave moved west, Archbishop William King wrote an account of the migration from Ulster, pinpointing the real source of the upheaval:
“Some would insinuate that this in some measure is due to the uneasiness dissenters have in the matter of religion. But this is plainly a mistake, for dissenters were never more easy as to that matter than they had been since the Revolution [of 1688] and are at present, and yet never thought of leaving the kingdom till oppressed by the excessive rents and other temporal hardships. Nor do any dissenters leave us, but proportionally of all sorts, except Papists.
The truth is this: after the Revolution, most of the kingdom was waste, and abandoned of people destroyed in the war. The landlords, therefore, were glad to get tenants at any rate and let their lands at very easy rents. They invited abundance of people to come over here, especially from Scotland, and they lived here very happily ever since. But now their leases are expired, and they are obliged not only to give what they paid before the Revolution, but in most places double and in many places treble, so that it is impossible for people to live or subsist on their farms.”
There was much to be done by a family before removal to America. A supply of food, clothing and bedding was necessary and the household goods had to be packed for the long voyage. The land, farm animals and the heavier tools must be sold. These were busy days and the partings must have been hard on all, unless friends hoped to follow soon or be along on the same journey. In leaving their Churches the emigrants did not fail to procure testimonials of good standing to be used in forming fresh religious ties in New England. (Bolton)
A 45 ton vessel of this time carrying 100 passengers plus crew would be CROWDED. The only place on a ship of this size with a bunk would be the captain's cabin. Everyone else would have a hammock, if lucky, a place among or on top of cargo or food supplies, if not. 100 people in a 45 ton ship, which would be approximately 55 feet long excluding bowsprit, would leave no room for a real cargo, though. There would be low headroom below deck. For cooking, as the gimbaled stove had not been invented, there would have been a brick stove below decks, which could only have been used in calm weather. There could conceivably have been weeks at a stretch with no hot food. As for the food, there are lots of old seafaring novels which describe this fairly accurately. Before the 20th century, ship-board food did not change much. In heavy seas or storms the entire area below decks would be dripping wet. If there was much wind, most of the passengers would have been required to stay below deck, they were part of the ballast. The length of the trip would have varied immensely, from less than a month in ideal conditions to three months.
The Irish ships began arriving in America in July, 1718. William and his brothers, Hugh and Robert, sons of Robert Montgomery, grandsons of John and Isabella Montgomery of Garvagh/Aghadowey, Ireland, were aboard some of the five ships which sailed into the little warf at the foot of State Street in Boston, among one-hundred and twenty Scotch-Irish families from Northern Ireland.
Ships recorded as arriving from Ireland in 1718, as recorded in the “News-Letter” newspaper in Boston, include:
Week of July 21- 28 - The “William & Mary”, James Montgomery, Master. (Aboard was the Reverend William Boyd of Macosquin, with “news of many families coming”)
Week of July 28- Aug 4 - The “(unnamed ship)”, John Wilson, Master, with “200 souls aboard”
August 4 - The Brigantine “Robert”, James Ferguson, Master, including Rev. James MacGregor, Hugh Montgomery, Sr. and many others
August 4 - The “William”, Archibald Hunter, Master, from Coleraine
August 4 - The “Mary Anne”, Andrew Watt, Master, from Dublin
September 1 - The “William”, the “Elizabeth" with passengers and provisions, the “Mary and Elizabeth" at 45 tons with 100 passengers and linen (R.J. Dickson, 1966), and the “Dove" at 70 tons
September 4 - The “Pink Dolphin”, John Mackay, Master, from Dublin
September 6 - The “Maccullom" (McCullom), James Law, Master, 100 passengers from Londonderry - with “20 odd families - and linen" (sailed out of Boston for Casco Bay on the 8th of September, 1718, arrived September 22-29)
Later in the fall of 1718, after late October, the ship “Robert" would sail up from Boston into Casco Bay where it became lodged in the ice while quarantined due to smallpox onboard the ship. All aboard spent an entire winter in most the deplorable conditions aboard the ship. This ship most likely included the Reverends MacGregor, McKeen, Cornwall and their followers.
Boston was a town of approximately 12,000 people at this time. Many of the families were natives of Scotland whose heads had passed over into Ulster during the short reign of James II. Several of these families were well off, including the Cargills, who had cousins Jean (Hugh Montgomery) and Mary (John McMurphy) arriving on the ships. These families, or their fathers and neighbors, had felt the edge of the sword of Graham of Claverhouse in Argyleshire, Scotland (Scotch-Irish Society, 1889).
Others in the body were the descendents of those who had participated in the original colonization of Ulster dating from 1610. Still others included descendents of those Scotchmen and Englishmen that Cromwell transplanted at the middle of the century to replace those wasted by his own sword. A few native Irish families were also mingled in. They were escaping the economic and religious oppression there and the fear of their lives from the warring religious factions.
One motive of Massachusetts in providing settlement lands to the Scotch-Irish was to have them settle on the frontiers (in Maine, among others) as a living shield against the French and the Indians. The motive of the Ulstermen in coming to New England was to be free to worship as they saw fit and to establish homes and commercial activities with less government control and ownership of the land.
The Scotch-Irish emigrants were offended at being called 'Irish' because they had frequently ventured their lives for the British Crown against the Irish Papists(4). The people in New England did not understand the distinction and it was some time before they were treated with common decency. Inter- marriage among the Scotch- Irish families was very common for the first few generations because of the ill- treatment that they received from established settlers.
William and Mary Aiken Montgomery came to America with their children on the ship "MacCullum", James Law, Master, from Londonderry, arriving in port at Boston, MA, September 6, 1718. They had departed Londonderry three months earlier. The emigrants aboard the five ships included most of the Presbyterian Congregations of Macosquin, Aghadowey and Kilrea along with people from Ballymoney, Macosquin and Coleraine.
A Captain Robert Temple came over to Boston with his family and servants in the autumn of 1717 to settle as a gentleman farmer. He visited Connecticut and also the lands of the Pejepscot Company about the Androscoggin River in Maine. He much preferred, however, the lands on the east side of the Kennebec, opposite the mouth of the Androscoggin. Upon his return to Boston he was taken into the enterprise, and agreed to undertake the transportation of settlers from Ireland.
Temple engaged two large ships in 1718, and three more ships were chartered the next year. The Scotch-Irish whom he brought over settled on the east bank of the Kennebec, between the present towns of Dresden and Woolwich. The land was called Cork. The names of some of his people were: William Montgomery, --- Caldwell, James Steel, David Steel, --- McNut, James Rankin, William and James Burns or Barns. A few of the Temple colonists settled in Topsham, opposite Brunswick, and several in Cathance, now part of Bowdoinham, on the Kennebec, south of Dresden. Others, the larger part of the several hundred who came under Temple, went to New Hampshire and Pennsylvania to avoid the wrath of Father Rasle and his Indians. Cork was destroyed soon after.
After arriving in Boston between July and September, 1718, the families separated into several groups. On September 8, 1718, there they were, William and Mary Montgomery with their children and grandchildren, among the group on the “Maccullom" which left for Casco Bay (Portland), Maine. They sailed to Casco Bay (then Corke, now Portland, MN) between September 22-29. They helped establish “the new Irish Settlement" with Rev. James Woodside of Garvagh, of the Bann Valley, Northern Ireland (about 4 miles SSW of Aghadowey). See Cyprian Southack's 1720 map of Merrymeeting Bay, the place called Cathance, which in 1910 was called Bowdoinham (Bolton). Among others aboard the ship MacCullom were: (?) Caldwell, James Steel, David Steel, and (?) McNutt. It is quite possible that one of these "Mr. Steels" became the husband of Margaret, the daughter of William's brother, Robert.
The Irish ships must have brought immigrants rapidly, for Southack's map of Maine, published in London in 1720, states that already five hundred had arrived, or about one hundred families. The Boston News-Letter for August 17-24, 1719, prints an item from Piscataqua, Maine, dated August 21st, to the effect that Philip Bass had arrived at the Kennebec River from Londonderry with about two hundred passengers. Many of these must have been friends of those who came in the Maccallum (McCollum), one year earlier.
With the coming of militant Indians the colonists fled, some to the Londonderry, New Hampshire, or to Worcester, and many to Pennsylvania, leaving few traces of their sojourn in Maine. William and Mary and family lived in the Merrymeeting Bay area of Maine for about two years, then removed to Hopkinton, Massachusetts, 1720-1722, following drastic events in conflict with native Indians.
William and Mary and family settled in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, just west of Boston, in about 1720. On September 2, 1724, William Montgomery was one of fourteen who, with Pastor Rev. Samuel Barrett, established the First Congregational Church at Hopkinton, MA. In 1728, Rev. Samuel Barrett officiated the wedding of William's daughter, Abigail, to John Harper in (Christ Church) First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, MA. And then came "trouble" for the Scotch Presbyterian-oriented members of the young First Congregational Church in 1732 . . . see notes for William's son, James Montgomery.
In the Spring of 1719, some of the emigrants aboard the ship "Robert", including Rev. James MacGregor and his followers to include Rev. Cornwall, received Deed to land about 30 miles north of Boston. The deed was given to Captain David Cargill (father of William's brother Hugh Montgomery's wife, Jean) and over a hundred others. Together, they founded the town of Nutfield at that location. Later they changed the town name to Londonderry. Today, it is called Derry, NH. They settled in this area under the leadership of the Reverend James MacGregor, their Pastor in Aghadowey. The deed was dated Oct. 20, 1719. They named this land, "Nutfield". Rev. MacGregor settled in Londonderry, NH and died there Mar. 5, 1729. Rev. MacGregor was married to Marion Cargill. William's brother, Hugh Montgomery had the Rev. MacGregor as his pastor and was married to Jean Cargill. Jean, Mary (McMurphy) and Marion (MacGregor) Cargill were sisters.

General Notes: Child - James Montgomery
At the age of 16, James arrived in the new world with his Father, William, RIN 538, and family, on September 1, 1718, at Boston Harbor, on the ship “Maccullom”, amongst a fleet of five ships from Ireland that day. The passengers and ships reorganized and sailed for Casco Bay, Maine, between September 22-29, 1718. The family lived in the Merrymeeting Bay area of Maine for a few years, then removed to Hopkinton, Massachusetts. (See William Montgomery, RIN 538, for more details in notes.)
Lived in Hopkinton, Middlesex County, MA, between 1724 and 1737:
1. By 1724, his father, William Montgomery, was one of fourteen who, with a pastor, established Christ Church at Hopkinton, MA.
2. His sister, Abigail, would marry John Harper in (Christ Church) First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, MA, in 1728. (“In 1728, Rev. Samuel Barrot officiated the wedding of William's daughter, Abigail, to John Harper in the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, MA”)
3. According to HENRY GENEOLOGY, page 72, by William Henry Eldridge, 1915:
Mary Henry, who married James Montgomery, was with her brothers, William Henry and Robert Henry, in Hopkinton, MA, by 1730/31; m. James Montgomery, 23 Jan 1732, n Hopkinton, MA; then the two Henry families and the James Montgomery family all moved to Blandford, MA, ca 1735.
4. According to the STEWART CLAN MAGAZINE, Vol. IV, No. 2, August 1925:
A. “John Stewart probably came from Ireland with the immigrants of 1718.” “He tarried a while in Londonderry, N.H.” and moved to Boxford, later moving to Hopkinton to join his brother (Walter) after the death of his first wife. He there remarried and was a blacksmith. He sold in 1737 to Peter Luce of Boston, “. . . He then removed to Blandford, a Scotch-Irish settlement called New Glasgow, in the western part of the state, in company with others from Hopkinton who had seceded from the church*.” “*On April 9, 1732, the (Congregational) church at Hopkinton voted the acceptance of the Cambridge platform, which gave great offense to the Scotch Presbyterians, and James Montgomery, Robert Cooke, William Henry, Walter Stewart, Robert Huston, John Hamilton, Robert Barrett and others absented themselves from communion and later organized a new church.”
B. Of Samuel Stewart: “. . . later appeared in Blandford, Mass., where in 1759 Samuel had a license as innholder on Beech hill, which adjoined the town of Granville: in 1761 he sold his lots in Blandford to James Montgomery.”
5. According to "Our County and Its People", by By Alfred Minott Copeland, as to the founding of the Village of Blandford:
On the formation of New Glasgow / Blandford, MA: "And whereas the said Christopher Jacob Lawton hath since purchased of the aforesaid commoners and proprietors all their several respective rights of, in and to the aforesaid tract of land except the rights of Josiah Sheldon and the heirs of Joshua Leavitt, deceased, of said Suffield, and hath agreed with Robert Senot, James Freeland, John Osborne, Hugh Harableton, Hugh Black, Comeinne Anderson, James Beard, Joseph Rice, Benjamin Woods, Samuel Karmer, James Montgomery, Armon Hambleton, Israel Gibbs, Robert Henry, Jonathan Boyce, James Wark, Robert Black, John Osborne, John Humbleton, Jeremiah Anderson, William Province, James MacCletick, Samuel Ferguson, James Freeland, Jr., John Houstin, Samuel Cook, Daniel Stone, Robert Houston, David Boyce, John Stuart, William Knox, Samuel Crooks, Samuel Tyger, William Anderson, William Barker, Samuel Wark, Alexander Osborn, Thomas Reed, Matthew Blair, Robert Cook, John Cockhoran, Robert Hambleton, Hugh Hambleton, Daniel Howe, Adam Knox, John Knox, Joseph Freeland, John Stuart, Robert Huston, Samuel Cook, William Dunaghoi, William Province, James Beard, John Cockran, Robert Hambleton, for the settlement of 60 families on said land in such manner and within such time as in the said proviso, in the aforementioned grant is contained and to whom the said Christopher Jacob Lawton hath covenanted to grant the several quantities hereafter mentioned, viz. : To fifty families 120 acres each, to two families 60 acres each, to five families 40 acres each, to one family 30 acres . . ."
"The people named in the above cited deed from Lawton to Brinley, were, for the most part, those who came to Glasgow from Hopkinton, Mass. It came about in this way: A Congregational church was organized in Hopkinton Sept. 2d, 1724. Seven of the original members of the church were Scotch Presbyterians, and five others soon after joined. As nothing was said at the outset about a form of church government, these men could conscientiously assent to the covenant and unite in Christian communion. April 9th, 1731, the church voted "to comply with the Platform of Church Discipline agreed to by the Synod of Churches assembled at Cambridge, 1649, as the rule of their discipline, so far as they apprehended it to be agreeable to the Word of God." This voting the church Congregational gave great offense to the Presbyterians. About ten families withdrew from the communion of the church. They were brought under discipline and eventually several of them excommunicated.
In 1734, they organized a Presbyterian church, built a small meeting-house about one and one-half miles west of the village, near what is known as the Ellery place. Subsequently, on the removal of many of these families to Blandford, this church organization was, by consent of Presbytery, transferred to that town, where it existed till 1800. The list of membership of the First Congregational Church in Hopkinton contains the names of those who were excommunicated. Of them are the names of Robert Cooke, William Dunaghoi, Robert Hambleton, Robert Huston, Hugh Black and his wife, William Henry, Matthew Blair, Sarah Montgomery, Robert Black, Jane Wark, Rebecca Wark, James Montgomery, John Hambleton, Adam Knox, Israel Gibbs, Mary Gibbs, Israel Walker, Mrs. Robert Sennet, Mrs. Robert Cook, Hugh Hambleton and wife, Walter Steward and wife, Mrs. J. S. Montgomery, Mary Hambleton, and these people went to Blandford, then called New Glasgow, and took their church with them. Tradition has it that they were promised a church bell from the city of Glasgow if they would call the town Glasgow, and continue that name.
In this tract of land the lots for settlers were laid out. Mr. Gibbs said that, "The settlers selected their farm lots, and the names of several families who obtained farms on the west side of the town street, are left on record, viz. : Messrs. Black, Reed, McClinton, Taggart, Brown, Anderson, Hamilton, Wells, Blair, Stewart, Montgomery, Boise, Ferguson, Campbell, Wilson, Sennett, Young, Knox and Gibbs. The majority of the above-named persons became permanent residents upon the lots they drew."
6. According to: "Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of the State of Massachusetts", by William Richard Cutter, William Frederick Adams, MA, 1910:
"In 1759 was the first year a school was taught by a female, as appears by the records: "Granted six pounds for schooling this year. Voted, Chosen Isreal Gibbs, James Montgomery, William Michel, to be committee to Hiar a School Deame, and so Dispurs the money Granded by the town to Defra the charges of the schooling, and to employ a school master when they think it will be Best for the town this year."
"In those days farm tools were of a very rude and primitive type. The method of harvesting was curoius, and tradition states that the laborers in the "North Meadow" - and expecially Isreal Gibbs - used a straight stick, which answered a three-fold purpose, that is as swath, rake and fork, and it was so awkward that it was then, and even now anything that is coarse, is called a "Gibb-sey".
". . . it appears that . . . that those Scotch settlers were as fond of spirits as their Anglo Saxcon neighbors. In 1756 it was voted, "That the town shall pay . . . the first cost for the Rum and sugar the Council shall Need while they Sit Hear.""
7. According to the book, "Taverns and Turnpikes of Blandford, MA 1733-1833" in describing the early settlement of Blandford, MA, tells the following about a very early Blandford road / rood / turnpike, "The road had been originally laid out coincident with the division line between the two tiers of first division home lots, but had to be shifted somewhat irregularly to the westward in order to avoid the ravine and brook running through it. The road is now spoken of sometimes as Falls road. A very early town lay-out of the road was on this wise: "Put to voat to see if the Town will establishthe Road South of the meeting hous beginning at the Northwest Corner of the Rev. mr mortons ortcherd as the road now goes to the west of the widoe Hamiltons House from thence as the road now Goes through widow Provans Land from thence as the Road now gos through the Land of James Campbls from thence through James and Robert M' Gomarys Land Said Rood to be three Roods wid.
In 1771, this road was somewhat minutely described in a county lay-out. On the course from Granville, after crossing "Pebbles Brook", it (the turnpike) was described as extending to a great rock in the middle of the River. Then climbing the steep hill, it ran by Robert Montgomery's fence to a heap of stones near a path in the field about 7 rods west of Montgomery's house, then north 42 perch (perch = 5-1/2 yards) to a great red oak six rods west of James Montgomery's.
The first Montgomery lived on the Lot first owned by Hugh Black (known in 1908 as the Osborne place). James occupied the next lot to the north. Not long after this, Robert Montgomery sold out his possessions there and moved up to Beech Hill, where he was living in the eighties (1780's) and carried on a retail license. James Montgomery had bought his lot of 1761 of Samuel Stewart who had an innholder's license . . ." Many times in these early records the surname was spelled, "Mt Gomery", and "Mongumery", etc.
From lists of Blandford Selectmen:
1747 - David Boies, Robert Wilson, Jas. Montgomery, John Stewart, John Hamilton
1758 - Robert Henry, John Knox, David Black, John Boies, James Montgomery
With his first wife, Mary Henry Montgomery, one of his children was born in Hopkinton, MA, and two in Blandford, MA. Of his second marriage to Kathren (?), two children were born in Blandford, MA.

Her sources: New Eng Hist and Gen Reg Vol C1V; Boston, Mass; Preston Ancestry by Belle Preston. A source was added in handwriting 'REL 974 W2be p 65, 87', and at the bottom of the sheet, also in handwriting, 'Preston Bassett Anc.' by Mary Preston (929.273 B294p) and 'Eng. Anc. and Homes of Pilgrims' (Ref 974 W2be) pg 65, 87.
This sheet has the birthplace of the father as Essex, Eng., the death at Fen Stanto, Hunts, Eng. It has the sequence of the children as Arthur, John, Margaret, Humphrey, George, Simon, Hannah and Henry, all born Essex, England, except John at Scrooby, Notts, and Henry at Scrooby, Essex.
A family group sheet by Janet K. Pease, Moline, Ill., had the same children with the same births except John born London and Henry born Scrooby, Notts. She added a death date for George and for Simon. (See notes for the children.) Her sources: Hist. of Duxbury, Mass.; Duxbury Vit rec; Marshfield Vit rec; Howland Quarterly.
'Ancestors of Annis Spear', by William G. Davis said they were all 'presumably born at Fenny Stanton' and listed John first, born abt 1593, then George, Margaret, Humphrey, Arthur, Simon and Henry. No Hannah was listed.
Some information put out by the 'Society of the Descendants of Pilgrim John Howland of the Ship Mayflower' (I neglected to note where I obtained it) lists them Arthur, John, Margaret, Humphrey, George, Simon, and Henry, with no births given for any except Simon. No Hannah was llisted. (See notes of the children for other information given and for a suggestion about Hannah.)
The will of Humphrey Howland gave bequests to 'my nephew Simon Howland ... and to his sister Hannah...'. It may be that this was mistakenly thought to refer to Humphrey's sister but it clearly calls her sister of his nephew. They could possibly be children of his brother Simon who may have been dead by 1646 when the will was made.
LDS Ancestral File has another wife for Henry - Alice Aires. (See below for doubt of this.) Also has parents John (son of John Howland and Ann Greenway) and Emma Revell.
LDS proxy baptism and endowment are from the FGRA sheet.
There is no further biography given for him in 'Ancestors of Annis Spear' but some information put out by the 'Society of the Descendants of Pilgrim John Howland of the Ship Mayflower' (I neglected to note where I obtained it) has, in a paragraph under 'Howlands in England': 'When Franklyn Howland published his 'Howland Genealogy' in 1885 it was known that a Humphrey Howland of London, draper, left a will in 1646 which mentioned his three brothers, Arthur, John, and Henry of New England. Further research did not identify their parents until 1937 when McClure Meredith Howland of New York discovered in the Draper's Records of London, mention that Humphrey Howland was the son of Henry
Howland of Fen Stanton, Huntingdonshire, England. Thus we know that John Howland's father was Henry Howland. From more recent research by Sir Anthony Wagner of the College of Arms what follows is all we found out about this family. We do not know the line back any further than John Howland's father. In Colonel Francis R. Stoddard's book 'Truth About the Pilgrims' (1952) he mentions Leon C. Hill's discovery of a marriage at Holy Trinity in Ely, Cambridgeshire, of a Henry Howland to Alice Aires on 26 April 1600. Among their children was a John, bapt. 16 Jan 1602, buried as John Howlett, 29 July 1603 and a Henry, born 7 Nov 1612. Sir Anthony is of the opinion that this is actually a Howlett family and not connected with the Henry Howland family of Fen Stanton.'
This information was not dated except there is a report of activity done in 1960 which makes it written after that, how long after is not clear.

General Notes: Child - John Howland
John Howland was a Mayflower pilgrim, born about 1592 in Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire, England. His parents were Henry and Margaret Howland. He died at over 80 years of age, the last survivor of the Mayflower. He is buried on Burial Hill in Plymouth, MA. He was married at Plymouth in about 1624-1625 to Elizabeth Tilley, also a Mayflower passenger. Later, John's brothers Henry, Jr and Arthur Howland arrived and settled at Plymouth.
"JOHN HOWLAND,1 came in the Mayflower, 1650, as servant of Gov. Carver. Until the discovery of Gov. Bradford's manuscript history of Plymouth Colony, it was supposed he married Elizabeth, dau. of Gov. Carver; but he m. soon after their arrival. Elizabeth, only daughter of John Tilley and wife; all passengers in the Mayflower, her parents dying the first winter. He was signer of the Mayflower Compact, Nov. 21, 1620; being then 28 years of age."
"Bradford relates a brief sketch of an accident to him during the voyage saying; "In sundrie of these storms the winds were so feirce. & ye seas so high, as they could not heare a knote of saile, but were forced to hull, for diverce days togither. And in one of them, as they thus lay at hull, in a mighty storme, a lusty yonge man (called John Howland) coming upon some occasion above ye grattings, was, with a seele of ye shipe throwne into (ye) sea; but it pleased God yet he caught hold of ye top-saile halliards, which hung over board, & rane out at length; yet he held his hould (though he was sundrie fadomes under water) till he was hald up by ye same rope to ye brime of ye water, and then with a boat hooke & other means got into ye shipe againe. & his life saved; and though he was something ill with it, yet he lived many years after, and became a profitable member both in church and common wealthe." He lived at Rocky Nook, Plymouth; an early freeman, and prominent in the affairs of the Colony; assessor 1633; juror, 1636; selectman, 1666; deputy at various times from 1652 to 1670; and served on important committees; assistant to the governor 1633-5. In 1634 he managed a trading post on the Kennebec river for the colony; called Cushmoc, probably at or near Augusta, Maine; but does not appear to have resided there. He was member of Gov. Bradford's Council, which in 1635 was composed of; Mr. Thomas Prince. Mr. Edward Winslow. Mr. John Alden, Mr. Stephen Hopkins, Capt. Myles Standish, Mr. William Collier and Mr. John Howland He and his brothers Arthur and Henry, who came over to Plymouth together later, were mentioned in the will of one Humphrey Howland, draper, of London, Eng., dated May 28, 1646." (From The Hamlin Family, pp.89-90)

See notes of father. The FGRA sheet, the sheet from Janet Pease and 'Ancestors of Annis Spear' all had the same data for him except Janet's sheet said he was born in London. 'Anc. of Annis Spear' had the same birth year but showed him first child. It said both he and his wife were passengers on the Mayflower. The Society paper shows him second child and says 'yeoman, passenger on Mayflower to Plymouth, 1620, died at Plymouth Colony, 23 Feb. 1672 'over eighty'. He is mentioned in the will of his brother, Humphrey, 1646.'
An entry in the 2000 LDS IGI says the marriage date was 16 Aug 1624, of Plymouth, Plymouth, Mass. LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet except sealing of his marriage is from the LDS IGI.

! See notes of father. The FGRA sheet had no marriage date and only the name 'Anne' as spouse. Janet Pease's sheet had both spouses, the first Margaret Calvert with date of marriage, the second with no date and only the name Anne. 'Ancestors of Annis Spear' had both spouses but no surname for Margaret and date of only the second marriage. It says he was aprenticed on 19 Nov 1613 to James Smith of the Drapers Company, London, and was granted his freedom on 1 Dec 1620.' It also gave much information about his will. The Society paper gave both marriages but no day for the second one which it says was by license. First marriage is in the IGI, form 7932032 93 film 1260626. Several other entries and several for 2nd marriage, no source available. LDS proxy temple ordinances are on the FGRA sheet and proxy sealing of the marriage is in the IGI.
General Notes: Child - Henry Howland
Henry Howland and his two brothers, John and Arthur, were the first Howlands in America. All three were in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, members of the band of Puritans who then removed to Holland due to religious intolerance. Brother John Howland was the first to arrive aboard the Mayflower in 1620. When Henry (and Arthur) arrived is not known, but it was likely in the period 1631-32, as Henry Howland was admitted freeman of Plymouth colony before January 1632/33. In 1636, he removed to the Duxbury section of the colony where he served in various positions, including Duxbury highway surveyor. His Quaker activities resulted in fines and censureship. "On 22 December 1657 Henry Howland, for entertaining Quaker meetings at his house, was summoned to appear at the next court. On 2 March 1657, 58, he was fined 10s. for entertaining a meeting at his house contrary to the order of the court...." On 7 June 1659, "Henry Howland of Duxburrow" as a Quaker "or manifest encourager of such" appears on a list to lose freemanship and is ordered to appear in August to be convicted and censured. At court on 6 October 1659, Henry Howland was disenfranchised for being an "abettor and entertainer of Quakers." Both the FGRA sheet and the one from Janet Pease said he was born about 1605 but 'Ancestors of Annis Spear' said abt 1609 and 'He was apprenticed to his brother Humphrey in 1623, but as there is no record of his being granted his freedom he probably did not finish his apprenticeship. He came to Plymouth Colony and settled in Duxbury where he died in 1670, leaving a widow Mary, who died 16 Jun 1674. His will, dated 28 Nov 1670, names eight children....' !See notes of father. The marriage date and first name of her husband was not on the FGRA sheet but was given on Janet Pease's sheet and in 'Ancestors of Annis Spear'. The latter didn't give a birth year but listed her third in the family. The Society paper also listed her third and gave the marriage. !See notes of father. The FGRA sheet gave 1598 as year of birth, no marriage nor death. The family group sheet from Janet Pease had the same birth year, no marriage, but a death date, 10 Feb 1643/4. 'Ancestors of Annis Spear' gave no birthdate or marriage but listed him second in the family, said he was 'merchant, of London, died before 24 Dec 1644, when Humphrey Howland of London, draper, brother and administrator of the goods of George Howland, sued Nathaniel Withers of London, merchant (Chancery Bills and Answers, Charles . General Notes: Child - Arthur Howland
!From 'Ancestry of Annis Spear': 'Arthur Howland was presumably born in Fenny Stanton, Huntington, Eng (A note says there are said to be records in England of his prosecution for nonconformity). He possibly came to New England with his brother Henry, nearly twenty years after their brother John sailed on the Mayflower in 1620. He first appears on the records of Plymouth Colony on 2 Nov 1640 when a grant was made to him of land on North River, fifty acres of upland and some meadow. He was propounded to be a freeman on 1 Mar 1641/2, and in 1643 he was on the list of men able to bear arms in Marshfield. Before 6 Jun1643, when John Walker was called his son-in-law, he married Margaret Walker, a widow (Rec of Plym. Col. II: 57). She must have been his second wife. In 1644, he sued and won a verdict of L6 from Robert Mendum for goods which Mendum's wife had brought for him from England and did not deliver, converting them to her own use. William Paddy of Plymouth, merchant, in behalf of Edmond Freeman of Sandwich, gentleman, deeded to Mr. Arthur Howland three hundred acres in Marshfield formerly granted to Capt. Myles Standish and Mr. John Alden, for the payment of L21 on 20 Jan 1647. In 1650 he sued Walter Baker and won a verdict. Mr. Authur Howland was a member of the grand jury in 1654. In the records of Plymouth Colony he is consistently given the distinction of 'Mr.' Having difficulties with Thomas Doggett over the bounds of the Freeman purchase, where he was then living, Howland petitioned that the court define the bounds on 3 Jul 1654. A surveyor was appointed and the matter did not reach an agreement until 3 Jul 1656. Howland's last public service was performed on 6 Feb 1654/5 when he was foreman of a coroner' jury inquiring into the death of a boy named John Walker, apparently not his stepson of that name. The boy had been a servant of Robert Latham, and the jury decided that he had died from cruelty and hard usage, the evidence being distressing indeed. Arthur Howland was a strong Quaker, (which was then illegal) as were many of his descendants. He was in court on 7 Oct 1651 for not frequenting the public assemblies on the Lord's day. In Dec 1657, Robert Huchin, an itinerant Quaker, held a meeting at Howland's house. Warned that the constable was on his way to break up the gathering and arrest Huchin, Howland managed to effect Huchin's escape. He, himself, was arrested and taken before Mr. John Alden, the magistrate, the next day, having again by stratagem enabled Huchin to escape, and was lodged in jail. On 2 Mar 1657/8, he was fined L9 and bound for good behavior. While in jail, he had composed 'a writing' which he presented to the court and which the magistrates said was full of fractious, seditious, and slanderous passages. Refusing to pay the fines, he was again committed to prison, but on 1 Jun 1658, he admitted that he had 'done evil' and was released. However, he continued his adherence to the new faith. On 19 May 1663, Howland deeded twenty acres to his stepson John Walker, in consideration of L17: 14: 10 paid by his wife Margaret Howland for his use in old England, which money Margaret had given, or probably promised, during her widowhood to her son (Mayflower Desc. XVIII: 87). He was excused from paying rates in 1669, 'in respect to his age and low condition'. The will of Arthur Howland, yeoman, of Marshfield was made 3 Jul 1674 and proved 14 Mar 1675/6. He directed that the 30s which he owed Edward Wanton was to be paid by Timothy Williamson. To his son Arthur, fifty acres of upland and meadow sufficient to keep six head of cattle. To his grandchild Amadiah Smith, L5, and to Amadiah's three brothers L5 to be equally divided among them. To daughters Mary Williamson, Martha Damon, and Elizabeth Low, L10 each. To grandchild Mary Walker, L 10. To grandchild Timothy Williamson, a meadow of five acres in Marshfield, he paying to Edward Wanton 10s a year for three years after he comes to enjoy the said meadow. All the remainder, both real and personal to 'my dear and noble souled wife Margaret Howland.' Executrix: wife Margaret. All of the legacies except the one to his son Arthur were to take effect upon the death of his wife. There is a memorandum that before signing the will the testator revoked the legacy of five acres of meadow to his grandchild Timothy Williamson. The inventory was taken 11 Dec 1675 by Anthony Snow and Josiah Crane and brought to court 7 Mar 1675/6. There had been no appraisal of the house and lands. His books were worth 12s and there were no articles of luxury. Margaret Howland of Marshfield made her will on 19 Jan 1683 and it was proved 5 Mar 1683/4. To her grandson John Walker she left four acres of land. To her three grandsons, sons of her son Arthur, namely Ebenezer, Thomas, and Arthur, her dwelling house, orchard, and field, to be possessed by them at the age of twenty one. Residue to her son Arthur Howland, he to pay the legacies to her children and grandchildren given by her late husband in his last will. Executor: son Arthur. Witnesses: John Rogers , Samuell Sprague. The inventory, taken 25 Jan 1683, amounted to L33: 19: 11. (Plym Co. Prob. 4: (2): 249-251)'

A brother of 1620 Mayflower passenger John Howland, q.v., Arthur Howland arrived in Plymouth much later. Thomas Prence, that 'Terrour to evill doers,' was not known for his compassion towards Quakers. And few families were more identified with the Quakers than those of Arthur and Henry Howland, the two brothers of Mayflower passenger and erstwhile Assistant, John Howland. As early as 22 Dec 1657, Mr. William Collier and Captain Josias Winslow, having knowledge of a Quaker meeting to take place at Arthur Howland's house in Marshfield, sent Constable John Phillips of Marshfield to interrupt the meeting and arrest a Quaker leader, Robert Huchin. As Phillips testified, he could not apprehend Huchin, being hindered by Howland, who told Phillips 'hee would have either a sword or a gun in the belly of him.' Seventeen-year-old Samuel Hunt testified that Zoeth Howland, son of Henry, had told him he would not go to a church meeting with him 'to hear lyes, and that the devill could teach as good a sermon as the minnisters.' Henry Howland himself was disenfranchised, along with William Newland, on 6 Oct 1659 for being an abettor and entertainer of Quakers.

According to William Howland in The Howlands in America, all the Howlan ds in America can trace their ancestral lineage to the three sons of Hen ry and Margaret (Aires) Howland of Fen Stanton, Huntingdonshire, Englan d: John Howland, who came to this country in the Mayflower in 1620, and h is two brothers, Arthur and Henry Howland, who arrived probably about 1623 -24. Our ancestor is Arthur Howland. He married (place and date unknown) M argaret (-----) Reed, a widow whose parentage we do not know. Arthur was b uried in Marshfield, MA 30 October 1675, and Margaret was buried in Marshf ield, 22 June 1683.
Arthur Howland, the oldest of the three brothers, we believe came to Plymouth with his brother, Henry, where he was a planter, yeoman, freeman, and Quaker. He was of Marshfield, MA by 1643, having been granted fifty acres of land and some meadow there at North River in 1640. He bought an additional three hundred acres of land for 21 pounds sterling, 13 pounds in money and the balance in corn and cattle and spent the rest of his life in Marshfield.
Arthur accepted the doctrines of the Society of Friends and was fined man times for 'Pmiting of a Quaker's meeting in his house.' He refused to pay the fines and was committed to jail. He and his wife were fined ten shillings for absenting themselves from 'publicke worship' in 1658, but 'in respect with his age and low condition' of health, he was acquitted.
Arthur's wife had, by her first marriage, a daughter, Lydia Reed, who marr ied John Walker of Marshfield. Their son, John Walker, Jr. was mentioned in Arthur's will.
Arthur and his wife Margaret (-----) Reed Howland had five children:
Arthur, Jr., m. Elizabeth Prence, daughter of Governor Thomas Prence of Pl ymouth.
Deborah, m. 1 Jan. 1648, John Smith, Jr. of Plymouth.
Mary, m. (1) 6 June 1653, Timothy Williamson; m. (2) 22 Jan. 1679, Robert Sanford.
Martha, m. (1) 15 Jan. 1659, John Damon of Scituate; m. (2) Peter Bacon.
Elizabeth, m. John Low.
1669 Arthur was arrested for neglecting to pay his minister tax.
22 Dec 1657 Called before the Plymouth Court to answer to entertaining a Quaker. Due to his advanced age and low estate, he was excused from paying the fine.
17 Oct 1651 He & his wife were indicted & admonished for not attending church in 1659
1640 Arrived in Duxbury, Mass. as a Planter
30 Oct 1675 Buried in Marshfield, Massachusetts
The Mayflower Planters Cape Cod Series Vol.II
He was a Quaker and his home was a meeting place for them. He was called before court on 1 Jun 1658 of which one of the members was his brother John Howland who came on the Mayflower. His brother was not Quaker.

Arthur was presumably born in Fenstanton. Davis says 'There are said to be records in England of his prosecution for nonconformity.' He may have come to New England with his brother Henry. Boyer says he was at Plymouth Colony as early as 1633 , but he first appears on the records of Plymouth Colony on 2 Nov 1640, when a grant was made to him of land on North river, 50 acres of upland and some meadow. He was propounded to be a freeman on 1 Mar 1641/1642, and in 1643 was on the list of men able to bear arms in Marshfield.
Torrey shows two marriages for Arthur, an unnamed first wife and second, widow Margaret (___) Walker. On 6 Jun 1643, John Walker was called his son -in-law (i.e. stepson), so the second marriage occurred before that date. Sanborn's supplement to Torrey says the marriage occurred 'possibly long before' 6 Jun 1643. Boyer shows only one marriage, to Margaret. He errs in calling her Margaret Reed. This appears based on a confusion that Lydia Reed, who married John Walker, was Margaret's daughter, instead of John Walker being her son. Five children were born to him in Marshfield.
In 1644 he sued and won a verdict for L6 from Robert Mendum for goods which Mendum's wife had brought for him from England and did not deliver, converting them to her own use. William Paddy of Plymouth, merchant, in behalf of Edmond Freeman of Sandwich, gentleman, deeded to Mr. Arthur Howland 300 acres in Marshfield formerly granted to Capt. Myles Standish and Mr. John Alden, for L21 on 20 Jan 1647. Of that sum, L13 was paid in money and the rest in corn and cattle.
In the records of Plymouth Colony he is consistently given the disctinction of 'Mr.'
In 1650 he sued Walter Baker and won a verdict.
Having difficulties with the bounds of the Freeman purchase, where he was then living, Howland petitioned that the court define the bounds on 3 Jul 1654. A surveyor was appointed and the matter did not reach an agreement until 3 Jul 1656.
Arthur was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers). He was in court on 7 Oct 1651, for not frequenting the public assemblies on the Lord's day. Apparently he regularly 'entertayned the forraigne Quakers who were goeing too & frow in some of the townes of the boument, producing great disturbance.'
His last public service was to serve as foreman of a coroner's jury on 6 Feb 1654/1655, inquiring into the death of a boy named John Walker (apparently not his relative). The boy had been a servant of Robert Latham, and the jury decided that he had died from cruelty and hard usage, the evidence being distressing indeed.
On Monday 21 Dec 1657 Robert Huchin, an itinerant Quaker, held a meeting at Howland's house. When the town constable, John Phillips, tried to arrest them, Arthur Howland, then aged about 70, threw Phillips out of his house. Huchin escaped.
Surrendering the next day, Howland appeared in court before Mr. John Alden, the magistrate. He refused to post bond and was imprisoned. While in jail he composed 'a writing' which he presented to the General Court which met 2 Mar 1658. The magistrates claimed the document 'on the pusing therof, appeered to be full of factiouse, seditious, slanderouse passages, to be of dangerouse consequence,' so that he was sentenced by the Court to pay L5 for resisting the constable and to post a surety bond for his future good behavior. He refused to post this bond, and to pay a L4 fine instead, so stayed in jail until 1 Jun 1658, when he admitted that he had 'done evil' and was released, 'considering his age and infeirmities,' by the court, of which his brother John was a member.
He continued his adherence to the new faith. Arthur and his wife were fined 10/- for absenting themselves from worship in 1658, and in 1669 he was prosecuted for not paying his share of the minister's rate.
On 19 May 1663, Howland deeded 20 acres to his step-son John Walker, in consideration of L17:14:10 paid by his wife Margaret Howland for his use in old England, which money Margaret had given, or probably promised, during her widowhood to her son (Mayflower Descendant 18:87)
He was excused from paying rates in 1669, 'in respect to his age and low condition.'
The will of Arthur Howland, yeoman, of Marshfield was made 3 Jul 1674 and proved 7 Mar 1675/1676. He directed that the 30s which he owed Edward Wanton was to be paid by Timothy Williamson. To his son Arthur Howland, 50 acres of upland and meadow sufficient to keep six head of cattle. To grandchild Assadiah Smith L5, and to Amadiah's 3 brothers L5 to be equally divided between them. !Initial source: Two family group sheets in the FGRA collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, submitted by Lois Shaffer, 518 Center St., SLC, Utah. Her source for the first marriage was 'B15A1 p103'. This is 'Anc. of Annis Spear' by W. G. Davis, which gives different information than shown on the sheet. The sheet gives his birthdate as abt 1590 but the book shows him fifth in the family of Henry and Ann Howland, making his birthdate abt 1601. The sheet gives his first wife as Mary but the book doesn't give her a name (See her notes). The book also gives a different surname for Margaret, calling her Mrs. Margaret Walker (see her notes). It also gives different marriage dates than shown on the sheet for 2nd marriage of #2 & for 1st marr of #3. A family group sheet sent to me by Janet K. Pease of Moline, Ill., had the same data for Arthur and the same names of his wives as the FGRA sheet, and a still different date for the first marriage of #3. Her sources were: Men of Marshfield, Mass.; Hist of Duxbury, Mass.; Vit rec of Marshfield & Scituate. The baptism and endowment are from the FGRA sheet and are in the 1997 IGI from temple records. The sealing to parents on the FGRA sheet of his parents is 16 May 1958 IFALL. It is in the 1997 IGI There is also one in the IGI with birth 1587, Fen Stanton, Huntingdon, England, son of Henery and Mrs. Henery Howland, sealed 5 Jun 1945 SLAKE, from temple film. LDS proxy sealing of the first marriage is in the 1997 IGI from temple film. The sealing of the 2nd marriage is to Margaret Reed and is from a temple film. There is another, to Mrs Margaret Reed, proxy sealing 17 Nov 1937 LOGAN and one to Margaret RE...D 17 Dec 1945 LOGAN, both from temple films. There are many others with later proxy sealings, some to Margaret Reed and some to Margaret Walker (see notes for her).
