TREASURES OF PIONEER HISTORY (1952), Vol 1The Mormons in Oregon and MontanaMartha E. Wightman MorrillMartha E. Wightman was born in Kirtland, Ohio on the 9th day of October, 1855, the daughter of a prosperous builder of buggies and wagons, Charles Wightman. In the summer of 1862 when Martha was between the ages of six and seven years, the family who had become converts of the Latter-day Saint faith, set out on the first lap of their journey westward. From Kirtland to Cleveland, Ohio by train then by river boat to St. Joseph, Missouri and thence to Council Bluff. With two wagons and two teams of oxen the Wightman's set out in a forty-wagon train. During the months of that westward trek, Mr. Wightman acted as blacksmith and wagonsmith for the wagon train, shoeing the oxen and setting wagon wheels. He was also the dentist of the company doing a good job of pulling teeth with a set of turn keys instead of the usual forceps. When the family arrived in Utah in 1862 they found hard times in the valley. Martha's mother had two more children in Utah so there was a family of five girls and five boys for Mr. Wightman to make a home and living for out of the desert. Martha obtained her education in Salt Lake City at Brigham Young's school where the tuition had to be paid for by each pupil. While attending school she met Charles W. Morrill, a young businessman from Pioche, Nevada and they were married two days later. She returned to school and he went out to some mining interests in Colorado. When he returned some nine or ten months later he took his bride to Park City and for many months they lived in a cabin [p.320] three miles above the mine. For six months Mrs. Morrill never saw another white woman not even an Indian squaw. While living in Park City she made a trip to Payson with her husband through Provo canyon which nearly cost them their lives. A snow slide had blocked off the canyon and as they traveled over the narrow, slippery dugway above the river, it seemed the wagon must surely plunge into the river below carrying the team with it. Less than six weeks after this perilous trip Mrs. Morrill's first child was born. When the baby was six weeks old she went back to Park City with her husband over the same trail. It was sometime after this that the Morrill's moved to Half-Way House, the stage station between Park City and Salt Lake. They served meals to travelers and drivers and took care of the stage horses. But, Mr. Morrill was a true westerner, going ever westward with each advance of civilization. Soon he began freighting up into the territory of Montana, and Mrs. Morrill continued to live at Half-Way House and carried on with the stage station. As Mr. Morrill's business interests took him further into Montana, she sold Half-Way House and moved to Butte with her little family. Her new home had once been the house where the great packs of buffalo meat brought in by the hunters for the Butte miners had been stored. Hearing about the country of the Flathead in northwestern Montana, Mr. Morrill and several miners in Butte decided to come out to the valley. In 1886 he located their ranch over east of the Flathead river toward the mountains and the following year Mrs. Morrill came with the children. Before she had been in the valley long she began nursing, answering calls at all hours and in all kinds of weather. There was one midwife in the section but no doctors. More and more calls came for her and she went on horseback over the trails to care for the sick. As the calls for her services increased, she decided that if she was going to tend women in midwifery, she had to get a doctor book and study, which she did. There are many families in Flathead today who hold her in loving esteem because of the skilful service she rendered them with so generous and sympathetic ear in their time of distress. Of those first years she wrote: "During the early years it seemed the valley was held by women who were virtual widows, holding the ranches while their husbands had gone somewhere to work, to Butte or elsewhere to get money. That was the time when the Indian scares were prevalent." During one of the scares, word came to Mrs. Morrill at her ranch to pack up provisions and what valuables she could carry and take her little family to a neighboring ranch. The posse going after the renegade Indians had asked all the women to gather at one or two of the ranches for the protection. Mrs. Morrill gave several days' rations to her cow and pigs, put clean clothes and shoes on [p.321] all the children, for they would be gone several days, packed food in tubs and set out for the designated ranch. All the women could shoot and they decided to stand the Indians off as long as possible, choosing the root cellar of the ranchhouse as their most likely fortress. They expected the Indians would come before morning. Toward evening they saw a figure racing toward them on horseback with black hair flying. They thought it was an Indian, but it proved to be a woman from another ranch, where the wives and children of that section had gathered. That other gathering of courageous pioneer wives had become concerned for the safety of their sisters in danger, and this woman had ridden over to find out how they fared. One night a band of hungry Indians had a meeting near the place where the women and children were gathered. The women heard the yelling and later learned that the Indians had hung up two live dogs and cut meat from them as they danced wildly around their campfires. When the men returned they fired shots to let the women know they were coming. Mrs. Morrill thought it was the Indians and decided before she would let the Indians get her children, four girls and one boy, she would shoot them herself. She got her shot gun loaded and stood guard. Soon, however, she heard white men's voices and then the men came riding in. Mrs. Morrill is indeed a pioneer not only of Utah, but of Flathead for she not only held the ranch in her husband's absence, but she later proved up on a homestead in the Swan River district and on a preemption, in both cases facing and enduring many hardships. She also helped her sister prove up on a homestead. As every where else, the pioneers of Flathead had to make what fun they had when they could, and one of Mrs. Morrill's outstanding memories is of one such occasion which was planned for recreation and well nigh ended in tragedy. A group of ten or twelve had chartered the little steamboat owned and operated by George Wills for an excursion to Wild Horse Island. They embarked on Sunday taking provisions with them to last until Thursday. After they set out a rain and wind storm came up over Flathead lake and the party had to put into Yellow Bay on the east shore of the lake. They went ashore and were forced to camp in their tents for several days while the storm held sway over the Bay. Their tents proving inadequate they went further inland searching for better quarters and found a deserted cabin which they decided to occupy. When they built a fire in the fireplace innumerable lizzards ran out over the floor. Soon their provisions gave out. There was only one ranch on the east shore of the lake and that was far distant, so some of the boys went scouting inland. They found a ranch where a garden had been planted. The people had left but there were still a few carrots growing in the deserted garden. The boys pulled them and took them back to camp and the party lived on carrot soup for [p.322] several days. It was thin and weak since the only thing they had to flavor it with was the rind left from their provision of bacon. It was Saturday before the party could venture out on the lake and the waves were still so high that they were only able to reach the ranch farther along the shore of the lake by nightfall. There they stayed for the night and learned, for the first time, that President McKinley had been shot. When they again docked at home it was Sunday and they found a search-party had been organized to look for them. After some years of nursing without the aid and advice of medical men, Mrs. Morrill decided that she wanted to come to Demerville and nurse under the doctors there. A call came from the mountains one time, and Mrs. Morrill was sent out alone by Dr. McDonald who said: "You are the only woman I could trust to go out on a case alone without a doctor." That was high praise from an outstanding medical man. From that time on she nursed steadily until 1914. Mr. Morrill passed away in 1902. Mrs. Morrill met with a tragic accident in November, 1937, when she fell and broke her hips. For sixteen months she was forced to spend her time in bed, but now she can walk a little with the help of crutches, and she says that it was the good nursing of her daughter and the prayers of her friends that has helped her through this ordeal.

unproven statement
Richard Morris had a total of 20 children. Ten with Mary Porter and another ten with a wife whose name is unknown (according to some: WFT, 4, tree 2283). Other trees only list Mary Porter as his wife (see WFT, 1, tree 3767).
32 RICHARD MORRIS , son of Lewis Morris , 10, was born not far from 1690.In 1716, he received land from his brother, Lewis Morris .1720, May 9. He had recorded the earmark which belonged formerly to his father, Lewis Morris .1733. He had lands in Nutswamp, Middletown, N. J.1737. He had lands in the same locality, when he was on the boundary of such lands.1741, June 19. He married, by license, Mary Porter , spinster. Joseph Shepherd , cooper, was bondsman. The signing of his will, twenty-one years later, proves that all of his children, mentioned as under age, in his will, were by this wife. As he left, at his death, in 1763, twenty children, of whom nine were minors, he must have been previously married, once if not twice, to account for the additional eleven children.1762, May 10. Will of Richard Morris , of Middletown, N. J. ; proved May 3, 1763, mentioned:Wife, Mary Morris , £50.Son, William Morris , 10 shillihgs, to bar him as heir.Loving daughters, Phebe Anny Rebecca Catharine minors, under eighteen years; each, £50.Five sons, Jacob Richard Lewis Robert George each, £50 at the age of twenty-one years.Three daughters, Sarah Burdge Mary Burdge Margaret Morford each, £20.Son, James Morris , to receive £50, over the others, if he keeps Henry .Son, Henry , to be kept by son, James .Son, Benjamin , the residue of the estate, on conditions.Nine children: Richard Lewis Robert George Anny Phebe Rebecca Lidia Catharine to be maintained out of the estate, by Benjamin , until they are of age.Son, JohnNine sons: WilliamJobJamesJosephJacobRichardLewisRobertGeorgeExecutors: Son-in-law, Joseph Burdge , of Freehold , and trusty friend, William Crawford , of Middletown Witnesses: David Morris , John Taylor and Benjamin Thorp , by his mark. The testator signed the will.1763. The inventory of the estate of Richard Morris , amounted to £1566-9-1 1/4.Items:Bond due; James and William Morris £140.Bond due; William and James Morris £147.Bond due; Job Morris £ 22.Bond due; James and William Morris £ 86.Bond due; Richard and David Morris £109.Bond due; Joseph Morris £ 10.Bond due; Nicholas Stillwell £ 28.Bond due; Thomas Stillwell and Mathias Mount £ 6-16-9 1/2.Note due; John Stillwell £ 1-4-0.Issue60 William Morris61 John Morris62 James Morris63 Job Morris64 Benjamin Morris

75 Rebecca Morris ; not eighteen years of age in 1762.76 Catharine Morris ; not eighteen years of age in 1762. Perhaps married, John Conover , in 1765.77 Sarah Morris ; married Joseph Burdge , of Freehold, N.
