General Notes: Husband - Joseph Greely Mansfield
On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph G. Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no sources. In that letter she wrote:
..."The notice of the death of Joseph G. Mansfield stated that when he died on Sept. 14, 1932 in North Adams, Mass. he was 60 years old which would indicate that he was born in 1872 and not the 1869 you give. However, the age given might have been wrong. In any case, his parents were Joseph W. and Mary Elizabeth (Bennett) Mansfield of Chebeague Island which is part of the town of Cumberland - originally it was part of North Yarmouth".
According to his daughter, Printha, he always went by his middle name. Everyone normally referred to him as Greely Mansfield. I have been trying to determine where the middle name "Greely" came from. I have been so far unable to locate any reference to a relative or friend of the family who bore that name. Family speculation is that it refers to the charismatic celebrity, Horace Greely, who was prominent around the time of his birth.
Printha recalls that her father worked in the cotton mill in Yarmouth as a bobbin boy, at the wage of 25 cents per week, for three years from age 8 to age 11. He asked several times to be allowed to go to sea, but his father would not allow it. J. Greely did not want to follow in his father's footsteps as a fisherman, so, at age 11, he ran away from home and signed on to work onboard a tall ship and sailed all over the world. He did not return home until he was 17. The only academic schooling he ever received was from the daughter of the ship's captain, who was named Printha. This is who J. Greely's daughter was named after. His younger brother and sister were born while he was at sea.
. J.Greely went back to work at the cotton mill and worked his way up to the position of superintendent. He spent the rest of his life managing textile mills and had a reputation as being very good at taking an unprofitable mill and turning it around. As a consequence of this skill, he never stayed long at a mill. Once he got a struggling mill on its feet he would move on to another one. He was paid a very handsome salary for his services. In fact, Printha relates that one of his early life goals was to always have a $1000 bill in his money clip. He realized that goal early in his career. When he passed away, sure enough, there was a $1000 bill in his money clip!
. He married Addie Fitts of Yarmouth about 1890, soon after returning from sea. Two sons, William & Myron were born of this marriage.
. Addie died on 12 May 1901. Fifteen months later, 15 Aug 1902, Joseph was married to Victoria Harriet (Hattie) Murray of Yarmouth, an immigrant from Prince Edward Island, Canada. The first three of their five children, Charles, Nellie, and Viola, were born in Yarmouth between 1904 and 1910.
. An interesting tidbit - Sometime while superintendent of the Yarmouth mill, one of J. Greely's eyes was put out when he ran into a hook that was hanging from the ceiling. He had a glass eye put in. Later, he went to Boston and had it replaced with a more sophisticated one which would actually move along with the good eye. This made it almost impossible for the casual observer to know that he had only one real eye.
. In 1915 J. Greely moved to Groveville, New Jersey (in Mercer Co., just southeast of Trenton), to take a mill there. Printha was born there.

Elma R. Borden wrote a book "Locust Grove 1695 to Groveville 1980", Gardner Printing Co., Lambertville, NJ: 1984 (found in Hamilton Library Reference only). From pages 50-51:
. When I reached my teens, the MorrisÕ hired a superintendent of the mills by the name of Mansfield. He had four or five children, two of whom were near my age. His daughter Nellie became a very good friend and it was then that I had the pleasure of being entertained in their home. I remember how impressed I was with the ballroom. Its highly waxed floors and crystal chandeliers were something I had never seen before. There were beautiful fireplaces in every room with mantles of Italian marble. This home was called The Mansion House and stood on a large pie shaped lot bordered by Allen Street and Burlington Row or Mill Street. Today three more houses are crowded on the same lot.
. I also remember that during these years the Mansfields were gracious in entertaining. They encouraged their children to seek good playmates and always wanted to know who they were. Their oldest son, Myron, married a girl from the village, Elizabeth Kline. Also during their stay in the Grove they adopted a young boy, Irving James. He was one of a large family and had just lost his mother. Iriving was the same age as their son Charles, and even before the adoption the two boys were great friends. After the family moved to Detroit we heard that Irving had grown to become a fine member of society and a son of whom Mr. Mansfield was quite proud.

. It was while the family was living in Groveville that they took in a domestic servant, Rebecca Inman, who was known by the family as "Beck". Apparently the family was there a very short time, as in 1916 they were living in Niles, Michigan (just north of South Bend, Indiana), where the last child, Gertrude, was born. Beck moved from New Jersey to Niles with the Mansfield family.
. J. Greely was superintendent of the Towar Cotton Mill in Niles. Bob Myers, curator of the Barrien County Historical Association, was able to find a couple references to this mill:
. "I think I may have found something.ÊSource: Farm Journal Illustrated Rural Directory of Berrien County, Michigan (Philadelphia: Wilmer Atkinson Company, 1917), 278. ÊThis is the index, and under "Cotton and Woolen Goods" it lists "Towar Cotton Mills" in Niles.
. I found the following newspaper article: Fifty Years Ago column, The News-Palladium (Benton Harbor, MI), 4 June 1966 [i. e., 1916]:
. "The Towar Cotton Mills, Inc., authorized capital $500,000 of which $200,000 is to be preferred stock and the rest common stock, is a new corporation, the office of which is at present at Detroit, while the mills are to be located at Niles, according to the prospectus that has been issued for the benefit of prospective purchasers of stock. The Acme Belting Co. of Niles is a large consumer of belting duck and would be one of the largest consumers of the Towar Cotton Mills."
. The staff of the Niles Districy Library, Local history / Genealogy Dept., was able to add:
. "We do have a very small file on the Towar Cotton Mill.ÊAlso I found out that in 1929 there was another cotton mill at that location,101 Wayne Street, by the name of Mid-West.ÊThe person in charge wasÊCharles Gorton. That building is gone."
. In 1922 J. Greely moved to Stuyvesant Falls to take a mill in Stockport, New York, (about 20 miles south of Albany on the Hudson River). Beck moved with him, leaving Hattie behind. J. Greely repented of the situation and told Hattie that he would like to set things right and reunite with her. Hattie (as she later told her children) would really have liked to have accepted, but let her pride stand in the way and refused. A divorce was agreed upon. J. Greely and Beck married a week after the divorce. By this time, Charles was on his own and the girls went to live with their father in Stuyvesant Falls, N.Y. During this time, Hattie secured work as a saleslady and got herself financially established. In 1924 The girls moved back in with Hattie and they resided in the River Park neighborhood of South Bend, Indiana.
. After that, for J. Greely & Beck, it was on to a mill in Colrain, a small town on the North River in Franklin County, northwestern Massachusetts. Printha recalls that this mill was at one time powered by the river. it had a square smokestack.
. The next mill was in Brattleboro, Windham Co., Vermont. In 1930, J. Greely's nephew, Laurence, was drowned in the river near the mill when he fell from a railroad bridge while fishing.
. About 1930, J. Greely moved to his last mill in Greylock, Berkshire County, northwestern Massachusetts. Greylock is now part of the town of North Adams. When Hattie Died in 1931, Printha and Gertrude went to live again with their father in North Adams. The family lived in a big white house, on the corner across from the mill, at 443 State Road.
From the Charlottetown, Prince Edward I. "Morning Guardian" newspaper of 27 Aug 1902 : "On Friday evening August 15th 1902, at the residence of J.J. Meyer Esq., Yarmouth Maine [this would be the father of Minnie Meyer, wife of Hattie's brother / uncle, Wesley], Mr. J. Greely Mansfield, foreman of the Yarmouth Cotton Factory, was married to Miss Victoria H. Murray adopted daughter of Charles Murray of Frederickton P.E.I. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. C.A. Brooks, pastor of the Methodist Church. . . . "
. This marriage was about 15 months after the death of Joseph's first wife. Joseph had two children under ten years of age at that time.
Joseph's funeral notice from the 15 September 1932 edition of the "North Adams Transcript" newspaper:
. "Funeral Services for Joseph G. Mansfield, superintendent of GreyMill A. in Greylock, of the Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates, Inc., for the past two years, who died early yesterday morning, will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock at his late home, 433 State Road. Rev. David W. Reid, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, will officiate. In the afternoon, the body will be taken to Yarmouth, Me., his native town, leaving here on the "Minute Man" of the B. & M. railroad. Foremen at the Greylock mill will escort the body from the home to the train.
. The Greylock mill which is to be closed tomorrow morning at 9:30 o'clock for the funeral of Gilbert T. Thompson of Adams, chairman of the board of directors of the corporation, who died on Tuesday night, will remain closed until after the funeral services for Mr. Mansfield."
The grave markers for J. Greely and for his wives, Addie & Hattie, are located, together in a row of identical stones, in the Riverside Cemetery in Yarmouth, just a few feet from the maintenance shed.
. The US census for 1900 (Yarmouth Town, sup dist 109, enumeration dist 85) (Ancesty.com image 9 of 91) has Joseph listed as head of household, born Jan 1871, married for 10 years. He, father, & mother all born in Maine. Occupation listed, but I can't make it out. Renting a house.
Others in household:

. Myron L. - son, born Dec 1897.
. Fitts, Annie S, boarder, female, born Dec 1876, single, she & parents born in Maine, occupation - sin????? Shoes. [This would be Addie's sister.]

. John S. Mansfield, overseer, Royal River Mfg Co, h East Main [J Greely had a brother, John Soule Mansfield. This is the only John S. Mansfield that I am aware of.]
And the business entry:
. Royal River Mfg Co, J. Greely Mansfield mgr, cotton yarn, twine and seamless bags, Bridge [Street]
The 1910 census for ED 118, Yarmouth, Cumberland Co., Maine (Ancestry.com image 13 of 22), on Main Street (exact address not given):
. Joseph G. Mansfield, age 39, married 8 years (2nd marriage), he & parents born in Maine, superintendent, cotton mill, owns house with no mortgage.

. Nellie J., daughter, age 4, born in Maine.
. William H., son, age 16, born in Maine.
. Myron L., son, age 12, born in Maine.
The 1920 census for dist. 98, Niles City, Berrien Co., Michigan (Ancestry.com image 14 of 31), erroneously enumerates Joseph Greely Mansfield as GEORGE G. MANSFIELD, at 202 South Lincoln Avenue, homeowner with no mortgage, age 46 [an error - should be 49], he & parents born in Maine, superintendent, cotton mill.
. Hattie, wife, age 34, she & parents born in English Canada
. Charles, son, age 16, born in Maine
. Nellie, dau., age 13, born in Maine
. Viola, dau., age 9, born in Maine

The 1930 census for district 4, Brattleboro, Windham Co., Vermont (Ancestry.com image page 49 of 57):
. Mansfield, Joseph G., renting for $27 per month at 60 Oak Grove Ave., not owning a radio, age 59, first married at age 20, he & parents born in Maine, superintendent, cotton mill, not a veteran.
. Rebecca E., wife, age 43, first married at age 22, she & parents born in New Jersey.
. Lawton, Lillian , stepdaughter, age 21, married, first married at age 16, she & parents born in New Jersey, inspector, cotton mill.
. Barbara, granddaughter [Rebecca's], age 4 7/12, she & father born in Massachusetts, mother born in New Jersey.
. While on vacation in Yarmouth in 2001, I attempted to discover where exactly J. Greely and his family resided while living there. J. Greely's daughter, Printha recalled that her sister Nellie (my grandmother, born 1906) was born in what they called the "big house", which was memorable in that It had a large barn, made of mahogany, just a few feet away from it. The barn was exceptionally clean and never had animals in it. Viola was born (1910) in the "little house", which is now a part of the Yarmouth Academy. Printha remembers that the big house was still standing in 1931, but that the little house had burned down.
. Associating this information with the 1904 town register entry mentioned above, I went to the Yarmouth Historical Society and found a map, drawn in 1910, showing the owner's names of all the houses in the town. On the edge of town on West Main Street there was a house owned by "R. Merrill est.". It seems likely that J. Greely and his family may have been boarding at the house.
. I drove to the area and found a large house with a very large barn a few feet from it with the date "1890" written on it. I later showed a photo of it to Printha and she said it looked just as she had remembered it. I spoke to the present owner of the house. He was familiar with the history of the house and did not think that it had any connection with the Merrill Family. He did mention, however, that a couple houses down the street was the "Captain Merrill House". He also said that in years past many of the houses had large barns next to them, but most have been torn down over the years.
. I went back to the Yarmouth Historical Society and discovered that the Captain Ruben Merrill house is at the present address of 233 West Main Street and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the few homes with a black wrought iron fence around it. Many homes had this feature in years gone by, but almost all of the fences were melted down for the iron over the years.
. I think it likely that this was the "big house" that Nellie Mansfield was born in.

Printha Mansfield Radecki (RIN 62), maintained a list of family vital statistics. Birth and death dates are from her list.
My information regarding Addie Fitts Mansfield and her descendants was gleaned from telephone conversations with Addie's husband's daughters by his second wife, Printha and Gertie in Jan 1991.
. Printha relates that Myron had a very short marriage in his youth to a woman named Lizzie and that they had a son, Kenneth. Lizzie took Kenneth with her, but Myron wanted to fight to keep the child. His new wife, Mary, however did not want to raise the child, so Myron gave up the fight. Printha does not think that they kept in touch, but that just before WWII, Kenneth looked his father up at the mill in Stockport and that they spent a weekend together.
. Myron was for years superintendant of the same textile mill in Yarmouth where Printha's father was. Myron had a reputation for excelence in the mixing of dyes.
Elma R. Borden wrote a book "Locust Grove 1695 to Groveville 1980", Gardner Printing Co., Lambertville, NJ: 1984 (found in Hamilton Library Reference only). From pages 50-51:

The 1930 census for district 41, Stockport, Columbia Co., New York (Ancestry.com image page 3 of 34) lists Myron J. Mansfield on Chester Ave., renting for $18 per month, not owning a radio, age 32, first married at age 26 [this would actually be his age at his second marriage. He had a child by his first wife, Lizzie, at about age 20], he and parents born in Maine, machinist at a woolen mill, not a veteran.
. Mary P., wife, age 32, married at age 25, born in New York, parents born in Germany.
Following is a letter, dated 25 Aug 1983, Yarmouth, Maine, from Doris Mansfield (Myron's cousin) to Myron's half sister, Viola:
. "I'm glad you wrote as it gives me a chance to tell you about Myron. He has been coming down twice a year for several years and when he was here in the Spring of 1982 he told me he had been bleeding from the rectum during the Winter. He promised me he would see his Dr. as soon as he got home which he did and was told to see a Surgeon as something was wrong. I didn't hear from him after he went home and in Sept. I wrote to him again, in Oct. and in Nov. I called his house several times and got no answer and the letters not answered or returned. I sent a Christmas card and said PLEASE drop a line so I will know how you are. He called me just before Xmas. He said he went into the hospital on Labor Day and got home just before Thanksgiving. He had a Clostomy?? and they found spots on his liver. He had gained 18 pounds and got around the house with a walker. The Dr. wanted him back for treatments in Jan. which he did and went down hill fast. He left the hospital in March and was in a Nursing Home until he passed away April 6. I think the Dr. was wrong to try any more treatments when the liver was already effected.
. A woman called me the morning of April 7 and told me he had gone, he asked her not to write or call until after he went because he didn't want to worry me. I asked her who she was and she said her Mother's sister was married to Mary's brother Anthony. She wrote me three or four letters but I did not care for her. Myron mentioned his friends and Mary's family but these people were never mentioned by him. . .
. [Here Doris talks about Myron's wife, Mary. I have included that part of the letter in Mary's notes.]
. The husband of this woman came to Yarmouth one night after I had been out for the evening. I got a call he was in Yarmouth and wanted to come over and see me. I was curious as to what he wanted so I told him to come. I didn't like him either. According to them, he [I don't know who "he" refers to] had never told them anything about his family, only his cousin Doris.
. I enjoyed him, Myron, we were not so apart in age. I was 78 and he was 85. He usually came on a Wed. and I had a nice home cooked dinner when he got here and then Thurs. he took me out. We always went to the shore for a nice seafood meal, then he left early the next morning for home. He was most faithful to Mary; he drove 12 miles twice a day to the Nursing Home to feed her noon and night.
. I have wondered if Bill was still living, he was 4 years older than Myron, I think.". . .
. [Here Doris writes about her cousin, Charles Baker, and I have included that part of the letter in his notes.]
. Now I must close and do a little garden work. I have a smaller one than usual but fresh cukes and beans, corn, etc. tastes awful good. We've had a funny year, lots of rain all Spring, hot and dry through July and Aug. I dread winter but I love the fall.
. hope you can read this, I write worse every day.
. Cousin
. Doris Mansfield

General Notes: Husband - Henry Travers
From Wallingfords of New England: It is possible that Henry had a wifebef ore Bridget in England before he came to America, although that may nev er be known.
BIOGRAPHY: Wallingfords of New England: Sarah's father, whose name is some times spelled Travis, came from London, England in the "Mary and John" ear ly in 1634. Some secondary sources have said he was of Irish ancestry, b ut there is no evidence for this. The passengers of the "Mary and John" we nt first to Agawam, now Ipswich, Massachusetts, and in 1635 many of the m, Henry Travers included, moved to Newbury. He was granted six acres of s alt marsh in the Great Marsh, and a house lot of half an acre near the Fir st Landing Place. Also four acres in another part of Newbury. He w as on a list of 91 freeholders of Newbury on 7 December 1642. Henry Trave rs was a seaman. In 1648 he went to London and never returned, leaving beh ind his wife Bridget, daughter Sarah and a son James. Before he left he wr ote a will that began "This 26th day of July, 1648, I Henrie Travers of Ne wbury, having occasion to go to Sea and know not whether I shall live to C om againe, I do by this present declare my last Will and Testament, as fol loweth..." To his daughter Sara he left a cow and a 3-year old heife r, as well as two brass pots, a little kettel, a frying pan, and a table b oard.
It sounds like the man decided to stay in England and abandon his family b ack in America. What became of him after this point is unknown, althou gh on 15 July 1659 an inventory of his estate was made, and he was call ed "late of Newbury, deceased".
DEATH: One source has death at sea.
Wallingfords of New England: At a Court held in Ipswich, Mass. 27 Septemb er 1659, the will of Henry Travers was presented, but not proved. "Adminis tration was granted to his widow, Bridgett, now wife of Richard Window. Ni colas Walington, who married his daughter, Sarah Traverse, had already rec eived three pounds, and the court ordered the administratrix to pay them t welve pounds more, and to the son, James Traverse, thirty pounds when he c omes of age, and the rest of the estate, which amounted to 92 li. [pounds ], to the widow, the land to stand bound for the children's portions."
General Notes: Wife - Bridget Fitts
From Wallingfords of New England: Bridget may have been a sister ofRicha rd Fitts of Ipswich and Newbury, Massachusetts, as in the latter's will da ted December 2, 1672 he mentions his sister "Travisse's" daughter. As t he term 'sister' could also refer to a sister-in-law, it is also possib le that Richard Fitts was a brother-in-law, or even a step-relation of so me sort. The widow Bridget married, 30 March 1659,
DEATH: From Wallingfords of New England:
Bridget, widowed once more, was deceased by November 9, 1673 when her esta te was in probate. Administration was granted to Nicholas Wallingford a nd James Travis. An inventory was done on October 9, 1673 that ca me to 11 pounds, 12 shillings, and 3 pence. Mr. Samuel Worcester and Eliza beth, his wife, testified that "within two or three dayes before the dea th of the Widdow Window, wee heard her declare that her will, as to her di sposall of w[ha]t estate she had, was that her son in Law Nicolas Wallingt on, who ought her forty shillings, giveing to his son John Wallington an E we lamb out of it should have the rest of the said forty shillings; and th at her Grandchild Sarah Wallington should have her best coat; and that h er son James Traves should have her bed; and that the rest of her estate s hould be equally divided between her son Nicolas Wallington & James Traves ". Sworn November 25, 1673. Elizabeth Worcester comes into the picture aga in after her husband Samuel died because she became the second wife of One siphorus Marsh, whose third wife was Sarah Travers.
BIOGRAPHY: Wallingfords of New England: In a Court held at Ipswich, Massac husetts on September 29, 1646, "John Emery, for his miscarriage with the w ife of Henry Traverse, fined 3 li. [pounds] or to be whipped, and pay witn ess fee to Christopher Bartlet. Bound to good behavior and not to freque nt the company of the wife of Henry Traverse. Brigett Traverse fined 10 s. for her misdemeanors."
In 1655 the widow Bridget petitioned the court regarding the estate, and s aid, in part, "That whereas Henry Travers, my husband, went away to Engla nd from mee seaven years agone, and left mee two children; my Daughter w as of the age of ten years, and my son not full three years of age. He th en made his will and gave my daughter a Cow and a Heifer, to be paid to h er at twelve years old... ...my daughter being now marryed I have pay ed to her two heifers." At one point in this petition she states "And sin ce he [her husband] went [to England] I have not heard of him but once, wh ich is five years since." Since Henry left seven years earlier it appea rs that two years later she somehow got word of him, or heard from hi m. It sounds like the man decided to stay in England and abandon his fami ly back in America. What became of him after this point is unknown, althou gh on 15 July 1659 an inventory of his estate was made, and he was call ed "late of Newbury, deceased".
After Bridget Travers married Richard Window in 1659 they moved to Glouces ter. Richard's will dated May 2, 1665 and proved June 27, 1665 mentions t he Travers children with this section: "And Conserning James travis: thir ty pounds which the Honored Court was pleased to aloue him out of his fath ers inheritanc which lis in Neckeles waringtans hands which is his portion ."
General Notes: Child - Sarah Travers
One source spells name Traverse. Crooks Genealogy has her name Bridget.
DEATH: Wallingford Genealogy has death in 1709.
From Wallingfords of New England: John Wallingford "of Bradford" was admi nistrator of the estate of his mother "Sarah Wallingford alias Mash" [sic ], giving bond on 22 August 1709 with Joseph Peasley of Haverhill, Mass. a nd John Wicom of Newbury, Mass. He signed by mark, not a signature. On t he back of this bond notice he is called "eldest surviving son of Sarah Wa llingford alias Mash", and she is described as "Relict of Nicholas Walling ford of Bradford".
General Notes: Child - James Travers
Name also spelled Travis.

I exchange data with people who have a interlocking marriage
into any surnames that interlocks into any of the branches
of my families.I started when I was 10 years old now 68years.
I am sharing my data in the interest of collaborative research.
I do this to help people to find there lineages and to fill
the pedigree charts.
I have not personally researched all families listed; dates
and information are subject to verification. Not responsible
for typographical errors misplaced citations. Missing
sources/references are because of my learning curve, not my
intention. You are encouraged to seek further documention
for your own confirmation.Further I have no control what
other people include about their families in any of the
data that they exchange.
If there are no dates about the living, then the computers
can not determine if the person is alive or deceased.
The sites set the living anywhere from 75 to 100 years
depending on the laws of the countries that they are in.
When I exchange with lineages the living are sometime shown
depending on who you are exchanging with, but my
request is that,if you update any of my data to the
internet, you also set the do not show the living, before
you update to the internet.
Also place in the source your contact email
address, and the lineage, so people can contact you
reqarding your update.
I have no claim to owning the data, except that which is
my immediate lineage, and even that is worked on by many
members of my family lineages. It is only as good as what
people put into it,that exchange with me. So look
in the notes of the genealogy for origin, if they put it
there,or the source.
If you are going to correct, update or put new branches on the
lineage your are inquirying about, please do not add from what
I have sent you,(This just duplicates how many more people
I have to find in the duplicates and merge them, edit your
notes to ensure that there is nothing there that you do not
want published.
Also do not submit information on copyrights that invades the
privacy of others especially for a relative that has not given
you permission to publish same.
Remember nothing is carved in stone except time.
The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriages, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 631,749 people via interlocking
marriages.
My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.

Joan Fitzalan, Countess of Hereford, Countess of Essex and Countess of Northampton (1347- 7 April 1419), was the wife of the 7th Earl of Hereford, 6th Earl of Essex and 2nd Earl of Northampton. She was the mother of Mary de Bohun, the first wife of Henry of Bolingbroke who later reigned as King Henry IV, and Eleanor de Bohun, Duchess of Gloucester. She was the maternal grandmother of King Henry V.
In 1400, she gave the order for the beheading of the Earl of Huntingdon in revenge for the part he had played in the execution of her brother, the 11th Earl of Arundel.
The estates which comprised Joan's large dowry made her one of the principal landowners in Essex, where she exercised lordship, acting as arbitrator and feoffee in property transactions.
Family
Lady Joan Fitzalan was born in 1347 at Arundel Castle, Sussex, one of seven children, and the eldest daughter of Richard Fitzalan, 10th Earl of Arundel and his second wife Eleanor of Lancaster. Her paternal grandparents were Edmund Fitzalan, 9th Earl of Arundel and Alice de Warenne, and her maternal grandparents were Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster and Maud Chaworth.
[edit] List of siblings
Richard Fitzalan, 11th Earl of Arundel (1346- 21 September 1397 Tower Hill, Cheapside, London), married firstly Elizabeth de Bohun, sister of Humphrey de Bohun, by whom he had seven children, and secondly Philippa Mortimer. He was beheaded on charges of high treason against King Richard II of England.
John Fitzalan 1st baron of Arundel, 1st Baron Maltravers (1351-16 December 1379), married Eleanor Maltravers, by whom he had issue. He drowned in the Irish Sea, having been shipwrecked after defeating the French off the Cornish coast.
Alice Fitzalan (1350- 17 March 1416), married Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent, by whom she had issue.
Thomas Arundel Archbishop of Canterbury (1352- 19 February 1414)
Mary Fitzalan (died 29 August 1396), married John Le Strange, 4th Baron Strange of Blackmere, by whom she had issue, including Ankaret Le Strange who married Richard Talbot, 4th Baron Talbot. These were the parents of John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury
Eleanor Fitzalan (1356- before 1366)
Joan had a half-brother from her father's first marriage to Isabel le Despenser:
Edmund of Arundel (1327- after 1377), he was bastardised by his parents annulment. He married Sybil Montagu, by whom he had two daughters.
Joan had two uterine half-siblings from her mother's first marriage to John de Beaumont, 2nd Lord Beaumont (died 14 April 1342):
Henry de Beaumont, 3rd Lord Beaumont (4 April 1340- 17 June 1369), married as her first husband Margaret de Vere (died 15 June 1398), by whom he had issue.
Matilda de Beaumont (died July 1367), married Hugh de Courtney.
Marriage and issue
Sometime after 9 September 1359, Joan married Humphrey de Bohun, one of the most powerful noblemen in the realm. His titles included 7th Earl of Hereford, 6th Earl of Essex, 2nd Earl of Northampton, and he was the hereditary Constable of England. He was the son of William de Bohun, 1st Earl of Northampton and Elizabeth de Badlesmere. Their marriage united two of the most prominent noble families in the kingdom; an alliance which was further strengthened by her elder brother Richard's marriage to Humphrey's sister, Elizabeth.
Together Humphrey and Joan produced two daughters, whom upon the death of their father, divided his vast estates between them:
Eleanor de Bohun (c.1360- 3 October 1399), co-heiress of her father. In 1376 she married Thomas of Woodstock, 1st Duke of Gloucester, the youngest son of King Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault. The marriage produced five children, including Anne of Gloucester. Eleanor died as a nun at Barking Abbey.
Mary de Bohun (1369- 4 June 1394), co-heiress of her father. On 27 July 1380 she married Henry of Bolingbroke, who would later be crowned King Henry IV. She died before he ascended the throne. The marriage produced six children including King Henry V of England.
Widowhood
Joan was left a widow in January 1373 at the age of about 25 or 26, and she chose not to remarry. Her two daughters were made wards of Edward III. Sometime after her husband's death, she received from King Edward the manor of Langham, which she held until her own death, among the numerous other manors she owned. The numerous estates which comprised Joan's large dowry ensured that she was one of the principal landowners in Essex. This placed her at the hub of a powerful structure of landed country gentry, who acted as her advisers and officers; Joan in turn acted as "arbitrator, feoffee in property transactions, and intercessor with the royal government".
During the Peasant's Revolt in 1381, some of Joan's manors were sacked by the rebels; this did not deter Joan from expanding and industrialising her lands after the uprising had been put down, having done much to encourage the dyeing and fulling of woollen cloth on some of her estates such as Saffron Walden.
In the Public Record Office, London, there is an extant document, written in Latin, which records the payment to Joan by John of Gaunt for the maintenance of her younger daughter Mary after the latter's marriage until she came of age in 1384.
A member of St. Helen's religious guild in Colchester, Joan founded chantries and was also a patron of Walden Abbey, having donated money for relics, vessels, vestments, and the construction of new buildings. She is described in the State Rolls as having been a "great benefactress" to the monasteries of Essex.
Execution of John Holland, 1st Duke of Exeter
In 1397, Joan's brother Richard Fitzalan, 11th Earl of Arundel and a Lord Appellant was executed on Tower Hill for his opposition to King Richard II of England. The king's half-brother John Holland, 1st Duke of Exeter, Earl of Huntingdon accompanied him to the scaffold, as one of King Richard's representatives. Less than three years later in 1400, when Holland joined a conspiracy to murder the new king Henry IV, and was captured near Joan's principal residence Pleshy Castle in Essex, he was turned over to her for punishment. Described as having possessed a "stern character", she showed him no mercy, and promptly gave orders for his decapitation, after having summoned the children of her dead brother to witness the execution. Following the beheading, which was performed without benefit of a trial, she ordered that Holland's severed head be raised on the end of a pike, which was placed upon the battlements of Pleshy Castle.
Henry IV rewarded Joan for her services on behalf of the Crown, by granting her custody of forfeited lands and properties. When Henry died in 1413, Joan's grandson Henry V followed suit; therefore up until her death in 1419, a large number of forfeited estates had come under her control.
Death
Lady Joan Fitzalan died on 7 April 1419 and was buried with her husband in Walden Abbey, which she had previously endowed.
