page 177. Thomas Tupper, Sr. (1578-1676) of Sandwich, Massachusetts; founder of Sandwich in 1637; Captain and Member of Council of War; Selectman; Deputy to the General Court for nineteen years.
Thomas Tupper [1577-1676] Came to North America 1635, helped settle Martha's Vineyard.
Occupation: Ship's carpenter, shoemaker, and leather worker.
He is believed to have made three voyages to America, first about 1621, again in 1624, and a third time in 1631 when he stayed at Cape Ann for an uncertain period, finally settling in Sandwich as one of the proprietors of that new township in 1637, where he remained until his death. Thomas, who had come to Sandwick with his daughter (Katherine) 14 and four year old son (probably robert0.
He became associated with Edmund Freeman, and was one of the "ten men of Saugus" given permission by the Plymouth Courts, 3 April 1637 to establish the first settlement on Cape Cod, later named Sandwich. The very early records were destroyed, but those remaining show that Thomas Tupper served hi community in several capacities. He represented Sandwich in the General Court in Plymouth in 1644, and later was deputy for twenty years, 1647 - 1667, and in addition served on juries and commissions.
He was always active in the church, of which he was a charter member. When the first pastor removed to other fields in 1654, the Sandwich Church was left for many years without a regular minister. With the approval and support of the General Court at Plymouth, he undertook to conduct religious services, although he was but a layman. He was given the authority by the court to perform marriages, which he did for about three years, then the authority was revoked because he allowed a Quaker couple of his acquaintance to marry in their own way, that was in their own home, instead of ratifying it officially before him as the law required. Later, he alternated in the pulpit with Richard Bourne. He farmed to some extent, and no doubt at first worked at his trade of shoemaking, as in legal documents he always stated his occupation as "shoemaker". He took many contracts of varying nature which he executed at a profit, and in 1658, he and his son Thomas were among the largest landowners and taxpayers in Sandwich, all of which is in the records of the Colony of New Plymouth and of the Massachusetts Bay. His last service in civic affairs was as a selectman for three years, beginning in 1667, and stood for 284 years until destroyed by fire in 1921. It was occupied by Thomas Tupper and his descendants for 267 of those years, and the first wedding in the house was that of his daughter Katherine to Benjamin Nye, 19 Oct. 1640.

Like his father, Thomas Tupper, Jr. was a missionary in the American Indians abd served the Church at Herring Pond, 1676-1706. He was a memeber of the Council of War, town clerk, Selectman for 14 years, Deputy to the General Court 8 years and is buried under a stone standing by the pond in the old burying ground at Sandwich, Massachusetts. With his father, he is listed as one of the largest landowners in the town. He was Lt. of the military company at Sandwich in 1680 and became Capt. in 1690.

!Surname on the FGRA sheet was 'Gurney or Bennett or Beauchamp'. (see notes for her husband for probable sources of these surnames which shows the improbability of any of them.) LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet. Several sealings of marriage of Edmund Freeman to Mrs. Elizabeth, Elizabeth Gurney, Elizabeth Bennett, and Elizabeth Beauchamp are in the IGI. There is much confusion as to her surname. Duane Josephson says an article by Rosemary Canfield, found in 'The Second Boat', Vol. 5, May 1984, says she was probably Elizabeth Raymer (or Rayner) who married in Shipley 10 Aug 1632 Edmundus Ffrieman. Shipley is a village about four miles from Billinghurst, where Edmund lived at one time. The marriage is in the Shipley parish register. There is an entry of the marriage in the IGI, extracted from film 919101, 416749 or 416755, LDS proxy sealing 23 Sep 1981 SLAKE. She is in an individual entry, from the marriage, proxy baptism 26 Mar 1982 and proxy endowment 19 MAY 1987 PROVO.

!He is named on the FGRA sheet of Edmund Freeman and in the 'Dawes-Gates...' account as the father of Bennett Hodsoll. The latter says 'Both Edmond and his brother William, with their respective wives, were beneficiaries in the wills of, respectively, their father-in-law John Hodsoll and his son of the same name, the said wives being co-heirs to their brother.' 'Dawes-Gates...' says the will of John Hodsoll, Sr., is in P.C.C., Weldon, 101. There are many entries in the 1997 IGI of John Hodsoll which could be him. The earliest LDS proxy temple ordinance dates are baptism 8 Jun 1935 SLAKE, endowment and sealing 'pre-1970' from temple film 183555 pg 284. It has born abt 1564 of Shermanbury, Sussex, Eng. Two have sealing to parents in 1992. One entry in IGI has his wife Faith Gratwick Bacon (F859526 18 film 1396170), another Faith Gatwick (6020935 30 film 1621589), several others Faith Gratwick of Shermabury, Sussex Eng, and one Faith Bennett.
