Biographical Sketch:
Born March 1, 1807, and raised in Connecticut, Wilford Woodruff was a miller by trade. He joined the Church in 1833 and served two missions before being ordained an Apostle in 1839. As a member of the Quorum of the Twelve, he completed four additional missions, presided over the temple in St. George, Utah, and served six years as Church Historian. He was sustained as Church President on April 7, 1889. As President of the Church, he dedicated temples in Salt Lake City and Manti, Utah, oversaw the organization of the Genealogical Society, and reemphasized the value of historical record keeping. After much pondering and prayer, he received a revelation that the Latter-day Saints should cease the practice of plural marriage. In 1890, he wrote the Manifesto, testifying that the Church had ceased teaching the practice of plural marriage. In addition to being the Lord's mouthpiece for that revelation, President Woodruff also left a legacy that emphasized missionary and temple work. He died in San Francisco on September 2, 1898.

They traveled westward with the body of the Saints as far as Council Bluffs. When the call for the Mormon Battalion came, Richard Carter, her youngest son, enrolled and was mustered into service July 16, 1846, at Council Bluffs. He served as a private in company "E" of the Mormon Battalion, commanded by Captain Higgins. On November 19, 1846, he died in service on the march to California, and was buried by his comrades at Puertelo, four miles south of Socow, New Mexico, on the Rio Grande, leaving a wife and two children. On April 12, 1852, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, his wife died of smallpox, and the children were brought across the plains by their aunt, Eliza Ann Carter Snow.

This may imply that they were on a ship such as The Duke of York, for whichthere is no list, or that they arrived before 1772 or after 1775.<br><br><br>John Carter's descendants still own the farm their great-grandfather first purchased in Nova Scotia. John Carter, sen., was drowned while fording the Missiquash River while on his way home from Amherst. His widow afterward became the second wife of William Chapman, of Point de Bute. Mr. Carter and his sons were honest men, and the name still stands well for fair dealing. Inspector Carter, of St. John, N.B.; Herbert Carter, M.D., of Port Elgin, N.B.; Titus Carter, barrister, of Fredericton, N.S., and Councilor Carter of Salisbury, N.B., are members of this family.
