Alias:<ALIA> Margaret /Ætheling/
Saint Margaret of Scotland, also known by her Anglo-Saxon name Margaret Æt
heling (c. 1045 – November 16, 1093), was EdgarÆtheling's sister. She mar
ried Malcolm III, King of Scots, becoming his Queen consort.
The daughter of the English prince Edward the Exile or "Edward Outremer
", son of Edmund Ironside, Margaret was probably born in Hungary. The prov
enance of her mother Agatha of Bulgaria is disputed: certainly relat
ed to the kings of Hungary, she was either a descendant of Emperor Henry I
II or a daughter of Yaroslav I of Kiev.
When her uncle, Edward the Confessor, the French-speaking Anglo-Saxon Ki
ng of England, died in 1066, she was living in England where her brothe
r, Edgar Ætheling, had decided to make a claim to the vacant throne. Aft
er the conquest of the Kingdom of England by the Normans, the tradional st
ory has it, however much it may be doubted, that the widowed Agatha decid
ed to leave Northumberland with her children and return to the Continen
t, but a storm drove their ship to Scotland where they sought the protecti
on of King Malcolm "Canmore". The spot where she is said to have land
ed is known today as Queensferry. Malcolm was probably a widower, and w
as no doubt attracted by the prospect of marrying the one of the few remai
ning members of the Anglo-Saxon royal family. The marriage of Malcolm a
nd Margaret soon took place and was followed by several invasions of North
umberland by the Scottish king, probably in support of the claims of his b
rother-in-law Edgar. These, however, had little result beyond the devastat
ion of the province.
Far more important were the effects of this alliance upon the history of S
cotland. Margeret used her connections to facilitate the introduction of t
he continental Benedictine monastic order, helping Malcolm to found Dunfer
mline Abbey. Moreover, a considerable portion of the old Northumbrian king
dom had been conqueredby the Scottish kings in the previous century, b
ut up until this time the English population had little influence upon t
he ruling element of the kingdom.Malcolm's marriage possibly improved t
he condition of the ethnically Anglo-Saxon population he ruled, and und
er Margaret's sons, Edgar I, Alexander I andDavid I, the Scottish royal c
ourt became more like that of its Anglo-Norman and continental neighbour
s. Margaret was very religious, and saw to the building of churches and t
he preservation of sacred relics. She rebuilt the monastery of Iona, and p
rovided a free ferry and housing for pilgrims coming to visit the shri
ne of Saint Andrew. She was a lavish alms-giver, and paid the ransoms of E
nglish hostages held by the Scots.
Margaret and Malcolm had eight children, six sons and two daughters:
1. Prince Edward of Scotland, killed 1093.
2. King Edmund I of Scotland
3. Ethelred, abbot of Dunkeld
4. King Edgar I of Scotland
5. King Alexander I of Scotland
6. King David I of Scotland
7. Edith of Scotland, also called Matilda, married King Henry I of Engl
and
8. Mary of Scotland, married Eustace III of Boulogne
Her husband, Malcolm, and their eldest son, Edward, were killed in siege a
gainst the English at Alnwick Castle on November 13, 1093. Her son Edmu
nd was left with the task of telling his mother of their deaths. Margar
et was ill, and she died on 16 November, 1093, three days after the deat
hs her husband and her eldest son. It is notable that while Malcolm's chil
dren by his first wife Ingibjörg all bore Gaelic names, those of Margar
et all bore non-Gaelic names. Later tradition often has it that Margaret w
as responsible for starting the demise of Gaelic culture in the lowlands a
nd Scotland in general. In fact, in Gaeldom, she has usually not been cons
idered a saint, but referred to as Mairead/Maighread nam Mallachd: Accurs
ed Margaret. This tradition, however, is spurious. Margaret's first childr
en were probably intended to bare Margaret's c

I exchange data with people who have a interlocking marriage
into any surnames that interlocks into any of the branches
of my families.I started when I was 10 years old now 68years.
I am sharing my data in the interest of collaborative research.
I do this to help people to find there lineages and to fill
the pedigree charts.
I have not personally researched all families listed; dates
and information are subject to verification. Not responsible
for typographical errors misplaced citations. Missing
sources/references are because of my learning curve, not my
intention. You are encouraged to seek further documention
for your own confirmation.Further I have no control what
other people include about their families in any of the
data that they exchange.
If there are no dates about the living, then the computers
can not determine if the person is alive or deceased.
The sites set the living anywhere from 75 to 100 years
depending on the laws of the countries that they are in.
When I exchange with lineages the living are sometime shown
depending on who you are exchanging with, but my
request is that,if you update any of my data to the
internet, you also set the do not show the living, before
you update to the internet.
Also place in the source your contact email
address, and the lineage, so people can contact you
reqarding your update.
I have no claim to owning the data, except that which is
my immediate lineage, and even that is worked on by many
members of my family lineages. It is only as good as what
people put into it,that exchange with me. So look
in the notes of the genealogy for origin, if they put it
there,or the source.
If you are going to correct, update or put new branches on the

want published.
Also do not submit information on copyrights that invades the
privacy of others especially for a relative that has not given
you permission to publish same.
Remember nothing is carved in stone except time.
The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriages, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 631,749 people via interlocking
marriages.
My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.
General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Atkinson
If you are going to correct, update or put new branches on the
lineage your are inquirying about, please do not add from what

Thomas, m. in Roxbury Jan 11, 1655, Jane Atkinson, of whose birth andparentage no record has been found; she lived to a good old age, anddied not far from the 29th of July, 1724. Thomas Cheney lived in Roxburyupto a few years after his marriage; he was a member of a committeeappointed by the town to inspect the bounds between Roxbury andDorchester, Jan 29, 1654/5; then he selected a spot on the south side ofCharles River, within the limits of Cambridge at that time, but laterincluded in Brighton, now in Boston, and made his home there. The deedof this earliest purchase is on record. "Richard Dana of Cambridge withAnn, his wife for 146 pounds (money) sold to Thomas cheny of he sameplace, husbandman," One messuage or tenement, being now the mansion placeof mee the said Richard Dana, & being sittuate on the south side ofCharles River within the bounds & limits of Cambridge abovesaid, being byestimation about seventy accres, & a High way anent Nathaniel Sparhawkslane on the east, also on the North a Highway and ye land of Mr. EdwardJackson & Thomas Browne on the West. Also a parcell of land neare thelanding place at the River."... also a parcel of marsh land aboutthirteen acres and liberty of a highway to it. April 26, 1659" Hissecond purchase of which we find record was made Dec. 20, 1665; it was atrct of 2 1/2 acres, bought of Richard Ferancis, "landin Cambridge,"bounded NOrth West by land of Walter Hastings, South East by Dixon, Southby Thomas Hammond, North --; a third was made two months later, Feb. 16,1665 -[the year then closed March 24, we mustremember] 23 acres "on thesouth side of Charles river." enclosed on three sides by lands of RichardDana of whom he pourchased, and, on the South East, bounded by lands ofThomas Brown. He made definite arrangement with Brown about boundaryfence, and with Dana about right of way "to the Roxbury highway." He hadspecified permission to "flow the land to such a height as he should seefit." When the town of Cambridge divided the pasture lands, Feb. 27,1664, we find set down to the name of "Thomas Cheny" "ten accres and twocow commons"; and when the "lotts beyond the eight mile Line betwixt thatand Concord line' were divided in 1683, 'Tho. Chenny 'had five accres.'"In 1662, he was one of the surveyors of highways in Cambridge; in 1664,one of hte signers of a petition to the General Court for theconservation of Cambridge rights and privileges. We have seen that heleft his Cambridge home after his father's death, and went back toroxbury to make his sick mother happy. He had the pleasure ofseeing herrecover her health; and with whatever feelings we cannot tell, he saw herbecome Mrs. Burdge. In 1675, he served in Capt. Johnson's celebratedRoxbury company fo soldiers, who marched form Boston July 6, 1675, forMt. Hope, the stronghold of he Indian enemy, and rendered very efficientservice, in December 1675, when Capt. Johnson was killed. His continuedresidence in Roxbury is attested by the fact that April 13, 1684, threeof his children, namely Thomas, Willima and John, "owned the covenant' inthe Roxbury church. He himself had joined the Cambridge church yearsbefore; and became a "freeman" of the colony, with all the rights andprivileges that involved, at the same time as his father -- May 23,1666....it was not many yers before the returne of hte good man to hisCambridge estates. There he passed his declining days in comfort andpeace, with much to make him happy, both in his own home and in those ofhis sons and daughters. At length, he felt that he had not much timeleft, and he called in his neighbor, Thomas Oliver, who wrote moderatelyandspelled extravagantly, and dictated the following will. His handtrembled and his eyes blurred as he signed it. The recorder of wills forMiddlesex county marked on the back of the document "Thomas China(Cheney)."

Thomas Cheney (seal)."The date of his death is not recorded. The widow lived in Cambridgeamong her children and grandchildren, amply provided for; a part of thetime her home was with her grandson, Hezekiah Turner. A businessstatement signed by her July 13, 1724, is her lates memorial; and areference to July 29, 1724, in the probate papers of her son Benjaminseems to imply that that was the date of her death. She must have beenvery aged, for it had been sixty-nine years since her marriage. her agewould render it conceivable that she might have been either a sister ofTheodore Atkinson of Boston, or a daughter of Thomas Atkinson ofConcord. But no evidence has yet been discovered to settle the questionof her family connections. (The Cheney Genealogy pp 34-41 by CharlesHenry Pope)

Benjamin, b. Jan 29, 1675, m. 1st his cousin Mary, dau, of Joseph (hisuncle) Cheney of Medfield, b. Jun3 2, 1683; she d. Oct. 31. 1705. He m.2nd, Nov. 14, 1706, Mary Harbert, who survived him and m. 2nd MichaelFelshaw of Killingly, Conn. She d. at Ashford, Conn. May 15, 1760.Benjamin Cheney resided in Cambridge. In 1718 he conveyed to hisbrother-in-law Josiah Cheney of Medfield certain lands in Cambridge andall the interest which he or the children of his "first wife, MaryCheney, daughter of Joseph Cheney, late of Medfield," might have in theestate of her father. He d. July 13, 1718. He owned homestead withhouse and barn and 52 1/2 acres of land, "bounded South part on ye roadleading to Newtown and part on John Oldham, Westerly, part on Nath'lOliver and part on Capt. Fuller, North on Josiah Bond and ye heirs ofEdward Prentice, on Amos Gates & a town highway, & east on ye town roadleading form Cambridge to Newtown." He also had 24 1/2 acres ofwood-land and pastureland, "lying between the barn and Wartertown road"&c. 12 acres at "Weedy Hill," 9 acres of meadow at Weedy Hill, 2 acresand 130 rods of salt marsh on the south side of Charles river. Theapraised value of his estae was 948 pounds (money) at the time of hisdeath; but a second appraisal in 1726, gave considerable largerestimates. Administration on the estate of "Benjamin Cheney late ofCambridge, yeoman," was granted to Mary Cheney, his widow, Jan 9,1718-19. Guardians were duly appointed for the children as follows:Josiah Cheney of Medfield for Benjamin, Thomas, Mary and Hannah; JohnStedman for Joseph, Edenezer, Ruth, John and William. After Stedman'sdeath, the cahrge was given to Thomas, the second son, and to SamuelSparhawk. Joseph receipted for his full portion on reaching his majorityNov. 2, 1731; Ruth, for hers, - 115 pounds (money, July 4, 1736. ThomasBrown contributes to the probate documents on this estate; acting asattorney for his aged "grandmother Cheney," Feb. 2, 1724, referring toaunt Fellshaw"; and John Fessenden, at the same time, gives testimony tothe effect that his grandmother had boarded in the family of HezekiahBrown for some time during the lifetime of her son Benjamin. Mrs.Felshaw, in her account, July 11, 1724, charges the estate with moneypaid the College treasurer for "the Intrist of 50 pounds (money) p. yearannuity of 8," and for "keeping my mother Cheney 6 years at 8 per year."She also speaks of "funeral charge for my daughter, deceased since herfather," referring, doubtless to the youngest child, whose name does notappear in town or church records. As was often the case in "olden tyme"the birth dates of these children were not all recorded; but variouscircumstances enable us to determine some and to approximate closely toothers. the pedigree charts.
I have not personally researched all families listed; dates

other people include about their families in any of the
data that they exchange.
If there are no dates about the living, then the computers
can not determine if the person is alive or deceased.
The sites set the living anywhere from 75 to 100 years
depending on the laws of the countries that they are in.
When I exchange with lineages the living are sometime shown
depending on who you are exchanging with, but my
request is that,if you update any of my data to the

you update to the internet.
Also place in the source your contact email

I have no claim to owning the data, except that which is
my immediate lineage, and even that is worked on by many
members of my family lineages. It is only as good as what
people put into it,that exchange with me. So look
in the notes of the genealogy for origin, if they put it
there,or the source.
If you are going to correct, update or put new branches on the
lineage your are inquirying about, please do not add from what
I have sent you,(This just duplicates how many more people

Also do not submit information on copyrights that invades the
privacy of others especially for a relative that has not given

The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriages, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 631,749 people via interlocking
marriages.
My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.

his term in office, the town of Warwick suffered a terrible loss. He was
