(1286 - 7 June 1337) was Count William III of Avesnes, Count William III of Holland and Count William II of Zeeland from 1304 to his death. He was the son of John II, Count of Hainaut and Philippa of Luxembourg
Before becoming count, he was defeated by Guy of Namur at the battle on the island of Duiveland in 1304. Guy and Duke John II of Brabant then conquered most of Zeeland and Holland, but these territories were recovered again when William became the new count in the same year. William continued the war with Flanders until the peace of Paris in 1323, where the Count of Flanders denounced all claims on Zeeland.
William had occupied most of the bishopric of Utrecht and tried to conquer Friesland but was repelled by Hessel Martena. Many of his daughters married with important rulers of Europe and he was called the father in law of Europe. The King of England and the Holy Roman Emperor were married to his daughters, while he was married to the sister of the King of France. In spite of this, as an ally of the English King, he tried to gain support of surrounding counties and duchies for an anti-French coalition.
Internally, William restored order and founded new institutions, like the treasury and the chancellory. The council of the count got more responsibilities.

Joan of Valois
(c. 1294 Longpont, Aisne, France - 7 March 1342, Fontenelle, Yonne, France) was the second eldest daughter of the French prince Charles of Valois and his first wife, Margaret, Countess of Anjou (1274-1299) and the sister of King Philip VI of France.
Lineage
Her paternal grandparents were Philip III of France and Isabella of Aragon. Her maternal grandparents were Charles II of Naples and Maria Arpad of Hungary. Joan was one of six children. In 1299, Joan's mother died, probably in childbirth and her father married his second wife, Catherine I of Courtenay, Titular Empress of Constantinople (1274-1308, by whom he had four more children. He would marry his third wife Mahaut of Châtillon in 1308 and by her he would sire a son and three daughters, among them were Isabella of Valois, who became Duchess of Bourbon and Blanche of Valois, who married Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor.

Margaret II of Avesnes
(1311 - 23 June 1356) was Countess of Hainaut and Countess of Holland (as Margaret I) from 1345 to 1356. Margaret was the daughter of William I, Count of Hainaut, and his wife, Joan of Valois. On 26 February 1324 in Cologne she married Emperor Louis IV the Bavarian.
Biography
She succeeded in 1345 her brother William IV following his death in battle: The emperor was conferring Hainaut, Holland, Zeeland and Friesland upon his wife, and shortly later also upon their son William V. The hereditary titles of Margaret's sisters, including Philippa of Hainaut who was Queen consort of Edward III of England, were ignored. Due to the dangerous hostility of the House of Luxemburg Louis had increased his power base ruthlessly. Margaret then returned to Holland in 1346 to secure her position of power but did not manage to prevent the coronation of the Luxemburg Charles IV as anti-king in Aix-la-Chapelle by force.
When Louis IV died on 11 October 1347, he was succeeded by his six sons. In 1349 the brothers decided to partition their possessions; Louis V, Duke of Bavaria kept Brandenburg and Tyrol, he and his younger brothers Louis VI the Roman and Otto V the Bavarian received Upper Bavaria. Stephen II, William and Albert received Lower Bavaria, Holland and Hainaut. Louis V and Stephen were no sons of Margaret and her youngest sons Albert and Otto were still minors. Louis VI released Holland and Hainaut for his brothers William and Albert in 1349 since he expected the Polish crown by his marriage with Cunigunde of Poland. In 1353 also Stephen released Holland and Hainault to his brother William.
Also Margaret had resigned her sovereignty in favour of her son William. In 1350, the nobles of Holland asked Margaret to return to Holland again. She then battled for the power in Holland and Hainaut for some years with her son William who had refussed to pay her alimony. The Cod league was formed in 23 May 1350 by a number of supporters of William. On 5 September of the same year, the Hook league was formed. Soon afterward, these factions clashed, and a civil war began.
Edward III of England, Margaret's brother-in-law through her sister Philippa of Hainault, came to her aid, winning a naval engagement off Veere in 1351; a few weeks later the Hooks and their English allies were defeated by William and the Cods at Vlaardingen, an overthrow which ruined Margaret's cause. Edward III shortly afterwards changed sides, and the empress saw herself compelled (1354) to come to an understanding with her son, he being recognized as count of Holland and Zeeland, she of Hainaut. Margaret died two years later, leaving William, in possession of the entire Holland-Hainaut inheritance (July 1356). William was married to Matilda ("Maud" in the English style) of Lancaster, sister to Blanche of Lancaster.

!"In October of 1854 a large number of Grays including Reuben's older
brother Benjamin and his family and Reuben and his family left Wesley,
Maine, probably also with other citizens of Wesley for Minnesota
Territory which was now open for settlement. With Maine's forests being
depleted and the Grays involved in the lumbering industry, it was an
excellent time to move to Minnesota.
!"The trip from Maine to Minneapolis, Minnesota took approximately
eleven days by the following route: Steamboat to Boston; Railroad to
Albany; New York canal boat to Buffalo (Erie Canal); Steamboat to
Toledo, Ohio; Railroad to Chicago; Stage to Galena, Illinois; and
Steamboat to St. Paul, Minnesota. The trip proved too arduous for Mary
Burton Gray, widowed mother of Benjamin and Reuben, who died on the
way to Minnesota at age 78 and was buried somewhere between Galena
and Minneapolis along the banks of the Mississippi.

!"Mr. Gray was one of Minnesota's pioneer citizens, having come to the
state as early as 1855, and he had resided at Otsego over forty years.
Farming had been Mr. Gray's occupation for many years and all his life he
had been a hardworker [sic; i.e., hard worker]. He took a keen interest in
public affairs and was one of those on the Otsego side who was
instrumental in getting the bridge across the Mississippi at this place,
and was always ready to do more than his share in any undertaking of
benefit to the community. During the early days he was also extensively
engaged in logging on the Rum river, and old time lumbermen always had
a good word for 'Jeff' Gray."

his stepmother, Pluma Ham of Lincoln; severaI nieces and nephews. He was predeceaseded by a brother, Philip Ham. According to "The History of Wesley, ME," 1996, Leonard Day was paid $50 by the town in 1842 to build a bridge over Beaver Dam Brook in Wesley. Leonard and his family removed to MN, likely about 1848. He and his brother Joseph Lee built the saw mill at the foot of St. Anthony Falls, MN (now St. Paul).
Leonard, 69, appears in the 1880 census living in Minneapolis Twp., MN with a young wife of 26 and a 5 yr. old son, Leonard Jr. It's not known when this marriage occurred or when his first wife died. According to "The Day Genealogy," he died in 1886.
From the History of Minneapolis, Vol I, pg. 335:
"THE DAY FAMILY
Leonard Day and his three sons were identified with the lumber and logging interests for a quarter of a century in the pioneer period, and the sons continued the Maine traditions of the family for years. The first of the family to arrive in Minneapolis was J. W. Day, who came from Wesley, Maine, where he had been engaged in the lumber business. He took up a claim on what is now Chicago Avenue and held the land for many years.
In 1851 Leonard Day settled in Minneapolis, and two years later came the two sons, W. H. H. and L. D. Day. In 1855 Leonard Day remodeled the frame addition to the Government mill and operated it for a few years as a sawmill. He became one of the stockholders in the Minneapolis Mill Company when it was incorporated in 1856, and soon after the Pioneer mill was completed he finished his own mill on the company's dam. The Bassett and the Day mills occupied the dam until 1862, when the third platform mill was built by W. E. Jones; the fourth was built by Ankeny, Robinson & Clement in 1863; the fifth by Dorilus Morrison, who had operated a gang mill on the east side and had previously been engaged in logging in the Rum River pineries; and the sixth by William D. Washburn, which he called the Lincoln mill. All of these were afterward leased by the Minneapolis Mill Company and in 1882-83 wrecked to accommodate the expanding flour industries.
In 1854 L. D. and J. W. Day formed a partnership to cut logs on the Rum River, and from that time on some members of the Day family were engaged in logging or lumbering as long as those industries were active. In 1856 Leonard Day joined the firm, which afterward assumed the style of L. Day & Sons. Two years afterward the plant adjoining the Pioneer mill was completed, and in 1860 W. H. H. Day was received into the firm, which continued unchanged in personnel and name until the death of Leonard Day in 1885. The style then became J. W. Day & Company, a son of L. D. Day and David Willard becoming identified with the firm."
