From the article in 'American Genealogist' V. 40: 'Edmond Freeman was a Deputy to the General Court of Sandwich for seven years, from 1669-1686, while his brother John served as Assistant, 1666-1686, 1689-1691; during the earlier years of their service, Thomas Prence was Governor. In a deed dated 29 Apr 1674 'Edmont ffreeman Junr. of Sandwich in the Colony of New Plimouth in America for a fatherly affection unto my son Joseph Burge and my daughter Patience the wife of Joseph Burge aforesd & according to my promise att their marriage Doe give freely ... one moyetee of upland ... in Sandwich, being formerly in the possession of Edmond ffreeman Senr. ... six acres ... doe give unto my son in law Joseph Burge ... (etc). On 2 Mar 1674/5'... 'Margarett freeman his wife appeared and gave up ... all her right in the meadow herein specified.' (Plym Col. Recs. 5, pt. 2:379)' After the death of his father, he, having a son named Edmond, became known as 'Senr.' There are several deeds and court records showing a difficulty arose between this Edmond and his son, Edmond over his estate. It shows he had become concerned that he may have inadvertently given all his estate to Edmond and had nothing to give to his daughters. The case was decided that he had not legally given Edmond all of it. The article in 'The American Genealogist' gives the case in more detail. The records are important in that they give several relationships which had not before appeared in printed accounts.

!See notes for her father and husband. The FGRA sheet of her and husband had birth about 1625, death about 1650. That of her father had the same birth but death 'before 18 July 1651'. Both had the same marriage. The FGRA sheet of her and husband had LDS proxy baptism 'bef 1872' but the one of her parents had the one shown here. Both had the endowment date shown here. Death Notes: Husband - Edmund Freeman Jr.
Will dated 21 Jun 1682, proved 2 Nov 1682
General Notes: Husband - Edmund Freeman Jr.
He seems to have had some education, as judged by his writings.
After two years of marriage, they moved from Pulborough to
Billinghurst on the high road to London. He made a deposition
on 13 Jan. 1633/4 in Chancery Court in a suit as guardian on
behalf of his children, his first wife having died nearly four
years earlier. About fifteen months after the date of this
deposition, and perhaps as a result of the outcome, he decided
to take his family to New England. His brother-in-law was John
Beauchamp, an underwriter of the colony. There were serious
problems in the financial affairs of the colony and by 1645
Freeeman was called "an attorney of Beauchamp", to look after
his interests. The ship Abigail, Captain Richard Hackwell,
Master, enrolled passengers for New England from June 4 to July
24, 1635. The Freeman family was enrolled on July 1, including:
Edward, 34, Elizabeth 35, Edmond, 15, Elizabeth, 12, and Alice,
17. (Edward is an error) The Abigail sailed from Plymouth about
August 1, 1635, and arrived at Boston October 8, a voyage of
about ten weeks. Two hundred and twenty pasengers and many
cattle were aboard. The Freemans settled first at Lynn in the
Bay Colony, but in 1637 they were among the first group to
settle at Sandwich, Plymouth Colony. The gravestones of him and
his wife, a pillion, and saddle shaped stones, are still there.
He was active as an official in the colony.
Edmund's brother, William, married Christian Hodsell,
daughter of John and Faith (Gratwick?) Hodsell. His sister,
Alice, married John Beauchamp, son of Thomas and Dorothy
(Clarke) Beauchamp of Cosgrove, Northampton. There is a fairly
extensive story of the relationship of John Beauchamp, merchant
and Salter of London, one of the seventy Merchant Adventurers
who financed the Plantation of the Pilgrim Fathers in
1619-1620. (The American Genealogist, #66 Oct. 1940 XVII #2) He
was one of seven assistant governors from 1640 to 1646.

Gen Notes of Barnstable Fam. p. 385-6 - In his intercourse with his
neighbors and associates, he was affable and obliging, and to his kindred
and intimate friends, he was ever kind and affectionate. He rested from
his labors at Sandwich in 1682, at the ripe old age of 92 years. His
wife died Feb. 14, 1676 aged 76. She was buried on a rising ground on
his own farm. He was then 86, and had lived 59 years in the married
state. Some little time after her decease he summoned together his sons
and his grandsons, they placed a large flat rock resembling a pillion,
over the grave of the wife. He then place another, resembling in shape a
saddle, beside it; and addressing his sons, he said: "when I die, place
my body under that stone, your mother and I have travelled many long
years together in this world, and I desire that our bodies rest here till
the resurrection, and I charge you to keep this spot sacred, and that you
enjoin it upon your children and your children's children, that they
never desecrate this spot." A substantial wall was bult around these
simple but suggestive monuments, and his descendants to this day with
pious hands protect them from descration.

incorporate many new discoveries, but some of the data cited has been
overtaken by newer research, such as the possible identification of
Edmund Freeman's second wife as Elizabeth Raymer (Raymond, Rayner?) as
suggested by the Shipley, Sussex marriage registers, rather than a widow
Perry.
NEHGR 114, p. 86 will of Edmond Freeman dated 24 Feb 1678 mentions "my
son Edward Perry" but does not mention daughter Mary. Plymouth Colony
Court rec Vol 4, p. 131, 151 on 2 July 1667 "twenty acres additional

not suitable for any one beside, being there is no meadow on it."

1682 gives "to my daughter Elizabeth Ellis" a one-third share of all land
"to the Westward and Northward" (Scippican? (Rochester) and
Middleborough?) and named her co-executrix. He also named grandson
Matthyas Ellis. NEHGR 130 [Jan 1976], p. 16 "In consideration of the
naturall love and affection" which he bore to Matthias Ellis, by my
kinsman by blood, that is to say my grandson" and for "diverse other
causes" such "as living with me until he came unto man's Estate, [and]

1678 deed "my now dwelling house and orchards."

!Initial sources: Two FGRA family group sheets in Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. The one for the first marriage was submitted by Muzetta P. Burton, 24 W. N. Temple, SLC, Utah. Her sources: A5E11 Freeman Gen. p23; B12 F12 Dawes Gates p349; F.F.H.A. Microfilm Pioneers of Mass. p175. The one for the second marriage was submitted by Merrill G. Durfee, Aurora, Utah. His sources: B12F12, Gates and Allied Fam vol. 1 p. 349; A5E11, Freeman Gen. p. 23; FFH 2 Microfilm. Christening is in Par. Reg. of St. Mary's; marriage in Par. Reg. of Cowfold; death from proving of his will, found in 'Plymouth Colony Records' 4, pt 2:5. LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet and that of his parents. The FGRA sheets have the name of his second wife as Elizabeth Gurney or Bennet or Beauchamp. The first two probably came from 'Bassett-Preston Ancestry', which mentioned both Bennett Hodsoll and Elizabeth Gourney as possible first marriages, not mentioning a second marriage. It gave 'Gravel cum Chesfield', (probably Gravely, near Chesfield in Hertfordshire) as the place of the marriage to Elizabeth Gourney. The name Beauchamp seems to have come from a misunderstanding of the records. Alice, daughter of Edmund and Alice, married John Beauchamp, so he was a brother-in-law of Edmund. (see notes for 2nd wife for other possibilities of her identity.) The sheet of the second marriage has two children, Mary, born 2 June 1631, London, London, England, and Cicelia born about 1633, Sandwich, Barnstable, Mass. Birthdate of the first is just a little over a year after the burial of his first wife in Pulborough, which makes it seem unlikely. Also, no Mary was recorded as a passenger with the rest of the family. Birth of the second is in Massachusetts two years before the family arrived there. (see below for a Sycillie, possible source for this child which would be a confused assumption) Hotten's 'The Original Lists...1600-1700' shows several different lists of those who came to New England on the ship 'Abigail'. On page 92 is a list dated 17 June 1635 in which John Freeman, 35, is the third one. Further down, 16th, is Marie, 50, Jo:, 9, and Sycillie, 4. The rest of the list are all women and children and it appears that there are four other groupings which suggest they are wives and children of men in the first part of the list. (Could Mary's age could be 30 instead of 50 in the original list, making it possible that she was wife of John? 'Freeman Genealogy' by F. Freeman, says John is 'beyond question' an original proprietor of Sudbury and Torrey's 'New England Marriages...' lists John Freeman, 1600, and Mary ___ 1st w., in Eng. b. 1626 (meaning a child born 1626). Again, John Freeman, 1600-1648, and Elizabeth (Noyes) 2nd w., (child born) abt 1643, Sudbury, (she) m. (2) Josiah Haynes, 1649). Starting at the bottom of page 92 and continued on page 93 is another list - no date, but assumed to have been made on the same date as the preceeding list. Seventh from the end of the list is Tho: Freeman, 24, and last is Edmond Freeman, 45. (Edmund of Pullborough was born 1596, so would be 39). On page 98, in a list which begins on pg 97, dated 1 July 1635, listed together are Husb: Edward Freeman, 34, uxor (wife) Elizabeth, Edmond Freeman, 15 and John Freeman, 8. Further on in the list is Elizab: Freeman, 12, and Alice Freeman, 17. These ages are consistant with the ages of the four surviving children of Edmund of Pullborough, so it surely seems that the 'Edward' must be Edmund, with his second wife, Elizabeth. Since his age would be 39, it is conceivable that the 34 might have actually been written 39. (4 and 9 could appear very much alike in handwriting.) 'Freeman Genealogy' by F. Freeman, 1875, shows a daughter Mary who married Edward Perry. This has been a conjecture in several accounts, based on Edmund's will which calls Edward Perry 'son'. However, if this were true, it is strange that the will did not mention Mary, since she was still alive at the time. No other record has been found suggesting he had a daughter Mary except the fact that the will of Edward Perry's son, Benjamin, (Probates of So. Kingston, R.I., vol 4 pg 274) named a son Freeman Perry.

The records are important in that they give several relationships which had not before appeared in printed accounts.

deposition, and perhaps as a result of the outcome, he decided
to take his family to New England.

!Surname on the FGRA sheet was 'Gurney or Bennett or Beauchamp'. (see notes for her husband for probable sources of these surnames which shows the improbability of any of them.) LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet. Several sealings of marriage of Edmund Freeman to Mrs. Elizabeth, Elizabeth Gurney, Elizabeth Bennett, and Elizabeth Beauchamp are in the IGI. There is much confusion as to her surname. Duane Josephson says an article by Rosemary Canfield, found in 'The Second Boat', Vol. 5, May 1984, says she was probably Elizabeth Raymer (or Rayner) who married in Shipley 10 Aug 1632 Edmundus Ffrieman. Shipley is a village about four miles from Billinghurst, where Edmund lived at one time. The marriage is in the Shipley parish register. There is an entry of the marriage in the IGI, extracted from film 919101, 416749 or 416755, LDS proxy sealing 23 Sep 1981 SLAKE. She is in an individual entry, from the marriage, proxy baptism 26 Mar 1982 and proxy endowment 19 MAY 1987 PROVO.

Two articles were printed in "The Second Boat" Vol. 5 No. 1,
May 1984 by Rosemary Canfield and Henry J. Perry, who both
arrived at the conclusion that Elizabeth's name was
Ramyer/Rayner and that an Edmundus Freiman and Elizabetha
Raymer were married by license at Shipley, Sussex on 10 August
1632. There is no indication as to her age, and no Q.E.D.
notation was made in the record that she was a widow.

Children

1620-1691. (Ancestry Publishing, P.O. Box 476, Salt Lake City, Utah

incorporate many new discoveries, but some of the data cited has been
overtaken by newer research, such as the possible identification of
Edmund Freeman's second wife as Elizabeth Raymer (Raymond, Rayner?) as
suggested by the Shipley, Sussex marriage registers, rather than a widow
Perry.
NEHGR 114, p. 86 will of Edmond Freeman dated 24 Feb 1678 mentions "my
son Edward Perry" but does not mention daughter Mary. Plymouth Colony
Court rec Vol 4, p. 131, 151 on 2 July 1667 "twenty acres additional
granted to Ezra Perry...being in the purchase of Mr. Edmond Freeman and
not suitable for any one beside, being there is no meadow on it."
NEHGR 119 [July 1965] p 169-173 - will Edmond Freeman, Sen dated 21 Jun
1682 gives "to my daughter Elizabeth Ellis" a one-third share of all land
"to the Westward and Northward" (Scippican? (Rochester) and
Middleborough?) and named her co-executrix. He also named grandson
Matthyas Ellis. NEHGR 130 [Jan 1976], p. 16 "In consideration of the
naturall love and affection" which he bore to Matthias Ellis, by my
kinsman by blood, that is to say my grandson" and for "diverse other
causes" such "as living with me until he came unto man's Estate, [and]
being a support unto me in my old age and weakness," gives him by his
1678 deed "my now dwelling house and orchards."
Research Notes: Husband - Edmund Freeman Jr.

!See notes for his father. Birth is in the Pulborough parish register. 'Dawes-Gates...' says only 'alive 1623'. LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet. Hotten's publication of 'The Original Lists...' shows several passenger lists for the 'Abigail', made on different days of June 1635. On page 92 is a list dated 17 Jun 1635 in which 'John Freeman, 35', is the third one. Further down, 16th, 17th and 18th, is 'Marie Freeman, 50, Jo: Freeman, 9, and Sycillie Freeman, 4'. The rest of this list are all women and children and there are four other groupings with the same surnames as men in the first part of the list, suggesting they are wives and children of those men. It would be interesting to see the original list to investigate the possibility that Marie's age could be 30 instead of 50, making it possible that she was wife of John. 30 and 50 can often look alike in handwriting. 'Freeman Genealogy' says this John is 'beyond question' the one recorded as an original proprietor of Sudbury, Middlesex, Mass., in 1639. However, I have found no Sudbury record of a wife Marie nor children John and Sycillie. There are three births of children to John Freeman and Elizabeth, 1645, 1647 and 1648, and marriage of Elizabeth Freeman to Josiath Haine, 1649. Torrey's 'New England Marriages...' lists 'John Freeman, 1600, and Mary ___ 1st w., in Eng. b. 1626 (meaning a child born 1626 in Eng, probably derived from the passenger listing of John, age 9), Sudbury' (meaning lived at Sudbury). Again, 'John Freeman and Elizabeth (Noyes), 2nd w. (child born) abt 1643, Sudbury, (Elizabeth) m. (2) Josiah Haynes, 1649.' Both families have been submitted by someone for temple work and they are in the IGI. There is an Elizabeth Freeman, born 23 Jun 1648 at Sudbury, married Thomas Gates, son of Stephen Gates.

General Notes: Child - Edmund Honington Freeman
EDMUND FREEMAN: [Beverly J. Freeman. The Lineage of Richard Vernon Freeman. Privately published Auburn MA 1971. p.iii, 1] Family tradition has the family coming from Devon. Circumstances indicate that they came from Oxford. The old family seat was at Fawley Court, Henley upon Thames, Oxford. Freemans have lived in Yorkshire and Stratford upon Avon "since time was".
[The American Genealogist. New Haven CT. 17:88] Alternate spelling "Edmond". Edmund was a well-to-do yeoman of Pulborough. Marriage date not found. Will dated 30 May 1623 made bequests to wife, L200 and benefit of copyhold wherein I dwell and thirds of my lands for life; dau Alice Beauchamp L50; son John Freeman, three tenements in Pulborough now in occupation of the widow Sommers, Wepham and named Fouks in fee, also L100; to youngest dau. Elizabeth, L300; by seven grandchildren, L20 apiece, to my sister Harte L5; to kindred 20/ apiece; to the poor of the parish L5; to servants and others; to wives brother George Coles, L5; Edmund Freemand and William Freeman, my two eldest sons, to be my executors; rest of goods and lands to my executors; to Ligh church at Chichester, 6d. George Coles of Amberley and Nicholas Bell of Arundel (County Sussex) were to oversee will and have L5. My wife to have benefit of the lease for her life of the "brookes." Testator made his mark. Admininstration 18 Jun 1623 (P.C.C., Swann 59.) Buried in Pulborough church, as requested in his will.
[Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines Vol. 1: Dawes & Allied Families, privately printed 1931,1:349.] Will dated 20 May 1623, administered 18 June 1623. Sons Edmond and William were executors. The will disposed of over L800 besides his various lands and tenements.
Actress Katherine Hepburn, Bing Crosby, William Jennings Bryan and the Wright Brothers are descendants.
He appears to have been well-to-do, leaving property and over
£1,000 to various heirs.
Research Notes: Child - Edmund Honington Freeman
!Initial source: Family group sheet in the FGRA collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, submitted by Mrs. Muzetta P. Burton, 24 W.N. Temple,SLC, Utah. Her sources: A5E11 Freeman Gen; B13A57 (Freeman Gen by Daniel Freeman - FHL film ); B12F12 Dawes-Gates Gen (The call number is now FHL 929.273 D321f). The estimated birth on the FGRA sheet is 1572. It is probably earlier than that since his marriage was was just 19 years after the estimated birth. It is more likely about 1567.
MARRIAGE: Parish Register of Pulborough (FHL 416755 vol. 82 or 416749 vol. 65)
DEATH: Parish Register of Pulborough (FHL 918480) LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet and that of his parents. The FGRA family group sheet gives the parents of Edmund as John Freeman and 'prob. Miss Isham'. These parents are not given in the first nor third source, so must have come from the second source which I have not yet examined. The FGRA sheet does not have the marriage date of the parents nor the first child Ellen and the second child Elizabeth. It has Edmund first, Alice second, Elinor third and shows a William as number 4, christened the same day as Elinor, John fifth and another William chr 1607 who married Christian Hodsoll 1624, then Elizabeth. 'Dawes-Gates' does not have the first two children, listing the rest as Edmund, Alice, William, Eleanor, John and Elizabeth. It doesn't have a christening date for William but says he married (1), between 1617 and 1624, Christian Hodsoll, and probably married (2) 15 May 1638 Jane Gratwick, widow. If he married 1624 or earlier, he must have been born earlier than 1607. The Pulborough parish register (FHL 918480) has a baptism of William son of Edmond Fryman 18 Oct 1598. It is not in the IGI. The baptisms (christenings) of #1 Ellen and #2 Elizabeth are in the IGI, Ellen's extracted from film #416755 (Pulborough) and Elizabeth's from film #416749 or 918464 (Stopham). It is not proven that Elizabeth is daughter of this Edmund, although it is very likely. There is no burial in 918480, which starts with 1595. The parish register of Stopham and the earlier years of Pulborough should be searched. Christenings of the other children are in the IGI, #6 and #7 extracted from film #918480. Christenings of all after 1595 are in the parish register film #918480. Earlier years of Pulborough are in film #416755 or 416749.
'Dawes-Gates Gen', by Mary W. Ferris, says Edmond's will made his sons Edmond and William his executors and disposed of over L800 besides his various lands and tenements; aside from a bequest to Edmond, it gave L20 to each of his children.

from BINGHAM FAMILY HISTORY:
1644 in Sandwich: pledged nine shillings toward repair of the Meeting House.
April 4, 1657 As a Lt. received 4 shillings pay for service in militia. His name is absent from the 1658 list of land owners.
June 7, 1659 Plymouth Colony Court (Vol. 3, P. 163)authorized Ezra to serve as executor of the estate of Sarah Perry.
July 10, 1663 Thomas Burgess conveyed half of his Manomet holdings to Exra Perry.(The balance going to Joseph Burgess and Lt. Josiah Standish).
June 20, 1666 the Court granted Ezra 30 acres in the "Neck".On July 3, 1667 the Court granted him and additional 20 acres.
There is speculation that Sarah Perry may have been Ezra's step-mother.
