John Shaw and Frank S. Knowles
John Shaw Knowles and his wife, the former Susan Abigail Smith, came to western Kansas in 1879 from Bourbon County, along the Missouri border, where they had lived during the troubled Civil War period. With their son, Frank S. they took up claims along the Medicine River some three miles west of Sun City. The claims of W. S. Sears and Bill Green were added to their holdings, and the property remained in the Knowles family until 1973, when it was sold to Wilbur Lambert.
The first few years, a sod-covered lean to served as living quarters, and this room was to remain as part of the permanent home built later. Money was needed for improvements so father and son took their teams and went to Durango, Colorado, during several winters and hauled freight to the mines. Returning home on one occasion they found the roof of their lean-to had been trampled by cattle.
When enough money had been saved, Frank and his father quarried native rock from nearby and built a substantial rock house and outbuildings. The rock was laid up by a Mr. Timmons, and the carpentry was done by two brothers from over on Turkey Creek. They made their own lime by burning gypsum over a fire of Elwood. After the fire burned out, the lime powder was gathered up, mixed with river sand, and used to mortar up the rocks.
November 12, 1893, Frank S. Knowles married Josephine Dunham in Durango, Colorado, and the newlyweds returned to live with his parents on the Medicine River. The children born of this marriage were: Relda, born in 1894; Fred, born in 1898; followed by twin brothers, Edwin and Robert in 1900; Frank in 1904; and Josephine in 1910.
Elm Grove School, so named because it was located in a grove of elm trees on the south side of the river, had a 16-week spring term for several years from about 1883. August 21, 1885, at the first meeting of School District No. 15, board members were John S. Knowles, director; J. M. Sears, Clerk; and R. A. Gross, Treasurer.
Around 1900 a second Elm Grove School, sometimes referred to as Red Rock School, was built north of the river, closer to the quarry settlement. The five older Knowles children crossed an eight inch plank footbridge over Medicine River and walked two miles to this school until a new one was built farther west at Kling in 1909. Because some of the boys attending school were in their late teens, it took stout-hearted teachers with stout hickory rods to maintain discipline. Some teachers whose names come to mind were: J.E. (Ed) Thomas, Will Jarvis, and Miss Abbie Lockwood. The one-room building was heated by a wood stove in the center of the room and had rows of double-desks down either side. Trapping was a common pursuit during the winter months, and some older boys ran trap lines along the river, which they checked on their way to school. Their success was usually well advertised when they got to school by the animal odors emanating from their clothing in the stuffy classroom.
Schoolchildren of the day got to watch the construction of the railroad up the Medicine Valley about 1909 when it was extended from Medicine Lodge to Belvidere. The railroad track provided a novel route from home to school for some children and at least one teacher, Prosper D. Lake, walked the three miles from Sun City to Kling along the tracks each day.
Frank and most of his neighbors raised wheat and other small grains as a cash crop in the early days and usually relied on custom threshers to thresh their grain. Early threshing machines were powered by four teams of horses, moving in a circle to turn a tumbling rod that transferred power to the cylinder and threshing mechanism. About 1909 Frank and two neighbors, George Walker and Walt Fulton, jointly purchased a Case threshing machine and a Case steam engine to power it; thereafter they were able to thresh their grain earlier and avoid the threat of rain damage. A retired railroad man named Allison came for several years and operated the steam engine during harvest.
Frank and Josie Knowles raised six children in their rock home on the Medicine River and cared for his parents in the home as well. Josie enjoyed music and was an accomplished guitarist, often call on by family and friends to join in songfests. Interested in family history, she strove to instill this interest in her family; she would be gratified to know there is now a published genealogy of the Knowles family, tracing it from Kansas back to New Hampshire in the mid-1600's. Frank and Josie moved from the farm to 312 North Walnut, Medicine Lodge, in 1926 and remained there the rest of their lives.

!Stephen is listed as one of the first settlers of Porter, ME in 1782 See
the account under John Libby [820] in generation 10 of how in the spring
of 1782, Stephen, his brother Meshach and his parents made the move
from Pittsfiled, NJ to the wilderness that was to become the town of
Porter. After having built his cabin for his new home in Maine (now the
town of Porter), Stephen returned to Pittsfield, NH either in the fall of
1782 or the spring of 1783 when he soon after married first Mary
Knowles [411] in 1783. Their first child, James was born in Pittsfield
the next year. They must have returned to Porter soon after as their
second child, Daniel, was born in Porter. A list has survived showing
that Mary and her children, James, John, Mary, Jemima and Sally attended
the Baptist church, which was organized in the southern part of Porter in
1807 or 07. Mary died in October 1816 in Porter, ME.
Stephen married second, Nancy Mathews (born December 13, 1788) on
January 9, 1817. Nancy was the daughter of Francis and Lydia (Matthews)
Matthews. Nancy died January 9, 1818. On March 17, 1818, Stephen
married third her sister, Sally Mathews (bor n May 13/17, 1793). In 1804
Stephen started to build a sawmill on Fox Brook about a half a mile
above the upper Spectacle Pond completing it in 1805. For years the mill
did a thriving business. Stephen was an industrious person. He owned
large tracts of timber.
He took an active part in the construction of the Old Porter meeting
House. One contemporary, Elias Gould, remembers the many trips that he
and his father made with a yoke of oxen hauling "pumpkin" pine boards
from Stephen' Libby's sawmill to the place on John Libbys lot where the
meeting house was under construction. He related an instance that
occurred at the "raising" of the framework of the building. This
particular circumstance is of interest because of the poise and courage
required for its performance. It was an old custom for someone, who had
steady nerves, to walk the entire length of the ridgepole ("running pole"),
then back again - this was the outstanding feature of the "frame-raising
ceremony." And who, do you think, performed this feat at the meeting
house? Why, our old friend, Stephen Libby - known among the old settlers
as "Leftenant" Libby! He was 61 years of age then! (and reached the ripe
old age of ninety-two years).
Stephen died on October 25, 1855, in Porter, Oxford, ME and is buried in
the Brownfield Road Burial-Ground (his third wife Sally Mathews who
died on December 16, 1866, probably lies beneath the unmarked stone
next to Sephen's).

Daniel was born the second son and the first born white male child in Porter, Oxford, Maine (at the time called Porterfield) to Stephen and Mary (Knowles) Libby. Daniel's father Stephen came with his eldest brother Meshach to the land now known as Porter, Maine in Oxford County. Daniel's grandfather John Libby followed his two sons Stephen & Meshach to this land by 1790. Daniel clearly grew in to a special man give all the wonderful notes found written about Daniel. His father Stephen notes in his journal that Daniel is the one son he truly admires as a man. His pride over pours as he states Daniel to be a man every father prays for. In other records, Daniel is described as a kind, caring, loving man, a man of great work ethic which was highly valued at this time and era! Upon his young death his widow, Mary states that she will never re-marry, that Daniel was her soul mate, and that to find another man to equal Daniel would never happen. True to her words she never re-marries! Sadly the very work ethic that Daniel was valued for by most was likely his killer. Daniel was falling timber on his land the day is died. It is noted that it was abnormally warm day, Daniel fell suddenly with fever and rapidly fell into a coma and died that afternoon. It is noted by the doctor that Daniel most likely died of work exhaustion; today we most likely would call is Heat Stroke. Daniel was only 32 yrs old. During Daniel life he married his soul mate Mary Rundlett on 19 Mar 1809 in Porter, Maine. Build a wonderful large farm and home for his new bride and new upcoming family; for which they had four children prior to Daniel's death. Daniel operated his father's family Saw Mill quite successfully according to many, including his father. Daniel and Mary's children were: 1. Levi Smith Chapman Libby (1810-1886) 2. Mahala Libby (1811-1837) 3. Phebe Rundlett Libby (1813-1881) 4. Joshua Rundlett Libby (1815-1878) Out of the children Levi spoke of his father most, being the eldest child of age ten when his father passed he remembered him best. Daniel like his father was an excellent carpenter as well. He too like many Libby(s)for which they were well known for has men of large physical status; abnormally tall, large hands, board shouldered. I can attest that height is still the case today in our branch of the family. Daniel was honored best by his wife Mary, given her hard-work to maintain the farm, home, and family until their eldest son Levi at age seventeen became soul operator of farm. Daniel was honored by his father as well who named his youngest son Daniel born in 1821; three years after Daniel (I) death. Ironically he was considered a man of great quality as well. Daniel was laid to rest on his land; named the Daniel Libby Cemetery on Moulton Ridge Road in Porter, Maine. His wife and soul mate joined him many years later given she lived to the age of 73 years. His family of today is very proud to call ourselves his 3rd and 4th great grandchildren! Thank you for all you did in your short life; be assured it is not unappreciated!

MILLINOCKET - Electa Knowlton, 81, passed away peacefully Friday, June 28, 2013, with loving family by her side, at Cummings Nursing Home and Rehab Center, Howland. She was born Nov. 6, 1931, in Bangor, daughter of Wallace and Annie Sinclair of Harmony.
Growing up on a farm, Electa graduated from Harmony High School, class of 1949. She married her high school sweetheart, Elmer Knowlton, and lived a brief time in Dexter. They then relocated to Ripogenus Dam where she began her life as a game warden's wife that would last 20 years. A tough life at times, she was the rock that kept the home fires burning and a warm meal waiting. Electa was an astute housekeeper, taking great pride in a squeaky clean home. Her hobbies of sewing, knitting, and crocheting were ideal for passing the time "waiting," as warden's wives do frequently. Electa was best known, however, for her incredible cooking skills that she honed as a young girl. She remembered helping cook for her large family, standing on a chair to reach the sideboard. Her homemade bread, cakes, pies, and meals were the best. She could make the toughest meat tender as she got to prove on a regular basis. It quickly became evident that we had our own "Betty Crocker" in the family. Later, after moving to Millinocket in the mid-1950s, she worked various jobs for Great Northern Paper Company. These jobs included a cook at The Guest House, watchman at Woodlands Shop, and cook at Harrington Lake Camps. She and Elmer also maintained the Kidney Pond Camps for a time. Electa enjoyed the outdoors, especially berry-picking, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. She often would catch the biggest fish, outdoing the men. She also had a green thumb when it came to plants and flowers. She and Elmer enjoyed traveling and had many great trips, including Alaska and Hawaii. She will be remembered as the mom who always put her family first, always found a way to get her sons what they needed, and never needed much for herself. Her cheerful, steady, glass half-full personality was a great influence on her family. She never complained and always made the best with what she had. She had a delightful sense of humor and could throw a "zinger" with the best of them. It was her family that gave her the most pleasure though, very proud of her sons, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren's accomplishments. Electa's greatest gift to the family was perhaps the lesson she taught by example, what "unconditional love" means. She will be greatly missed by all.
Electa was predeceased by her husband, Elmer in 2007; siblings, Howard, Carlton, Norma, Gertrude and Marita; and grandson, Seth Knowlton. Electa is survived by three sons, Daryl and wife, Marcy, Douglass and wife, Judy, and Donn and wife, Maria; seven grandchildren, Amy Barnes and husband, Brian, Carrie Holbert, Daryl Knowlton II, Jesse Knowlton, Lisa Morton and husband, Mike, Ross Knowlton and Nicole Knowlton; and six great-grandchildren, Sydney Barnes, Adalynn Barnes, Devin Decker, Lily Knowlton, Mya Knowlton, and Evan Morton. Electa will be sadly missed by two special nieces, Meredith Chadbourne and Eve Libby; and also longtime friends, Rodney and Cindi Sargent. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Linda Ippoliti for her loving care with Mom over the past months. Also, a special thank you to the girls of Community Health and Counseling and Cummings Nursing Home staff for their wonderful care.

Andrew Knox was a major figure in the Scottish / Irish Reformation Church.
Although the civil war in Ireland had ended in the earlier part of King Henry Vll
s reign, the suppression of the Irish rebels was not completed until Elizabeth l had ascended the throne. All this time the lands of the province had been lying at waste. The English were in possession of a few towns and parcels of land, while the Irish stayed within the woods and other safe hiding places.
With the coming of the reign of James l there began the process of encouraging English and Scottish settlers, or planters to the province. Many of these moved from the south west of Ireland to the province of Ulster. The long rested land soon yielded to their labours and bore plentiful harvests.
The majority of these persons had opted for the move, being driven by poverty. Others were attracted by the adventure, and others who had lived
scandalous lives
. It was asserted that the scum of both England and Scotland were among the prime movers.
No care had been taken to plant any religion. Even some of the preachers at the time were of dubious quality. Most ministers sent to Ireland at this time were theologically Presbyterian and were welcomed by the Ulster-Scots settlers, yet they preached and worshipped within the Established Church and its buildings. The Bishops in Ulster tolerated the Presbyterians for a time, and perhaps even initially welcomed the influx of new people and new clergy. The Bishops were also flexible in the ordination ceremonies of these new ministers, and in fact many of the new Bishops coming to Ulster were Scots. Bishop George Montgomery was Sir Hugh Montgomery's brother (he was transferred from Derry, Raphoe and Clogher in January 1610 to become Bishop of Meath). His replacement was fellow Scot Bishop Andrew Knox, formerly Bishop of the Isles.
Chichester, The Lord Deputy of Ireland, informed the authorities in England that "the mayors of cities and towns [of Ulster, Ireland] for the most part refused to take the oath of supremacy, as did also the sheriffs, bailiffs, etc.," and he inquired in what manner he should act towards them. To put an end to this state of affairs, he nominated Bishop Andrew Knox, then Bishop of the Isles, to be sent over to Ireland as Bishop of Raphoe, and to be commissioned to take measures to stir up the Protestant bishops and to suppress Popery. Knox had been educated at Melvillian, Glasgow University.
On his arrival, Knox found that he had a heavy task before him. In a letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury (1611) he wrote that there were only four men in the ministry "who have knowledge or care to propagate the Evangell." "The defection," he wrote, "is so great of those who sometime professed the truth, that where hundreds came to several churches before, there resort now scarce six; the gathering and flocking in great numbers of Jesuits, seminary priests, friars, and gidding Papists of all sorts are so frequent from Rome and all parts beyond the seas, that it seems to him the greatest lading the ships bring to this country are burdens of them, their books, clothes, crosses, and ceremonies; natives and others in corporate towns publicly profess themselves their maintainers. There is no diocese but it has a bishop appointed and consecrated by the Pope, nor province that wants an archbishop, nor parish without a priest, all actually serving their time and the Pope's direction and plenteously maintained by the people, so that the few ministers that are, and bishops that profess to do any good, profit no more than Lot did in Sodom. And sure it may be expected that if God, the king, and his Grace prevent not this unnatural growth of superstition, the face of the kingdom will be shortly clad with this darkness."
He lost no time in summoning a meeting of the bishops (1611), most of whom, according to him, were not very reliable. The Archbishop of Dublin (Jones) was "burdened with the cares of state;" the Archbishop of Armagh was "somewhat old and unable;" the Archbishop of Cashel (Magrath) was "old and unable, whose wife and children would not accompany him to the church;" the Archbishop of Tuam was "well willed and best learned, but wanted maintainers and helpers," and the Bishops of Waterford and Limerick were described as "having no credit." In accordance with the instructions that had been forwarded to them by the king, they agreed that they would take common action for "the suppression of papistry and the plantation of religion;" that they would observe the law of residence in their several dioceses; that they would make visitations every year of their parishes, and inquire into the condition of the churches and the behaviour of their ministers; that by authority of his Majesty's commission they would "carefully tender the oath of allegiance to every nobleman, knight, justice of the peace, and other officers of corporate towns," and make a return to the Lord Deputy of those who took the oath as well as of those who refused it; that they would admit no cleric "to any spiritual promotion" who would not willingly take the oath of supremacy, and that they would inquire in every deanery "what persons receive or harbour trafficking priests, Jesuits, seminaries and massing priests, and friars, and will present their names together with the names of the said priests and Jesuits to the Lord Deputy."
A royal proclamation was issued (1661) ordering all Jesuits and priests to depart from the kingdom immediately; the laity were commanded to attend the Protestant service under threat of severe penalties, students in foreign colleges were ordered to return at once, and Catholic schoolmasters were forbidden to teach within the kingdom. Backed by all the powers of the crown, Knox and his fellow bishops set up a terrible inquisition in every part of the country, and spared no pains to hound down the clergy and those who entertained them, to drive the poorer classes by brute force into the church, to harass the better classes by threats and examinations, and to wipe out every vestige of the Catholic religion. Cornelius O'Devany, a Franciscan, who had been appointed Bishop of Down and Connor (1582), was arrested together with a priest who accompanied him, was tried in Dublin, and was hanged, drawn, and quartered (1612). Almost at the same time the Protestant Bishop of Down and Connor was accused of "incontinence, the turning away of his wife, and taking the wife of his man-servant in her room, subornation of witnesses," and alienation of the diocesan property. He fled from his diocese, was arrested, degraded, and died in prison. The Archbishop of Glasgow and Bishop Knox of Raphoe, himself a Scotchman, hastened to London to secure the appointment of one of their countrymen as his successor; but Chichester wrote that though he would not say that Scotchmen were not good men, he could aver that they were "hot-spirited and very griping" and "such as were not fit for these parts." Several attempts were made to arrest Dr. Eugene Matthews or MacMahon, who had been transferred (1611) by the Pope from Clogher to the Archbishopric of Dublin. He was detested especially by the government, because it was thought that he owed his promotion to the influence of O'Neill, who was also suspected of having had a voice in the appointment of the learned Franciscan, Florence Conry to Tuam (1609). During the course of these years jurors were threatened by the crown lawyers with the Star Chamber unless they found a verdict of guilty, and were sent to prison for not returning a proper verdict against those accused by the Protestant ministers of not attending church; wards of court though Catholic were committed to the guardianship of Protestants, and in every grant a special clause was inserted "that the ward shall be brought up at the college near Dublin (Trinity College) in English habit and religion;" the Irish were excluded from all offices; men of no property were appointed as sheriffs; and the fines for non-attendance at church were levied strictly. Instead of being applied to the relief of the poor they found their way, according to the Catholic Lords of the Pale, into the pockets of the ministers. In reply to this last charge Chichester asserted that they were not given to the poor, because all the poor were recusants, but they were employed "in the rebuilding of churches, bridges, and like charitable purposes."
Knox did not succeed in uprooting the Catholic faith in Ireland but he continued his civilizing mission in Ulster as bishop of Raphoe.
Andrew ordained Reverend John Livingston 29 August 1630.
Andrew oversaw Raphoe Cathedral during his tenure. The monastery was founded by St. Columba - himself a native of County Donegal. An old poem states that it was one of the spots he loved ; he was born at Gartan, which lies beyond Letterkenny at the other side of Mongorry Hill, on the slope of which Raphoe stands.
The Cathedral itself is named after St. Eunan (or Adamnan) who, a century after St. Columba, repaired and perhaps enlarged the existing building. The earliest record of a Bishop of Raphoe is of Oengus O'Lappin in 959. The Cathedral, in common with many another Church occupying an ancient site, has, over the years, undergone many restorations as a result, little of the very ancient structure is still apparent, perhaps only the Sedilia in the Chancel dates back before the time of Bishop Andrew Knox (1611-1633). Bishop Knox restored a Cathedral 'ruynated and all decayed saving the walls unto which hath been two years past preparing a roofe which, God willing, will be got up at the Bishop's and Parishioners charges.'"..... [Taken from 'Raphoe Cathedral: a short guide' ] "On the south wall are the three visible remnants of the medieval cathedral. A range of low and narrow lancets with wide internal spays reminiscent of a cloister, and the 12th century stone triple sedilia, adjacent to the arcade, has an unusual design of shamrocks carved on the capitals of its pillars. It was discovered behind lath and plaster in the 1893 restoration and now provides stalls for the Dean and two of the Canons. Facing the sedilia, on the north wall, are three Jacobean wooden stalls which accommodate the archdeacon and the other two canons. An oak chair of 1665, used as the bishop's throne, is set in a window bay inside the sanctuary rails on the north side adjacent to the Jacobean stalls. The medieval piscina is on the south wall of the sanctuary......" [Taken from 'The Cathedrals of Ireland' by Peter Galloway]
During the MacDonald-MacLean feud of the last quarter of the 16th century, and probably after 1586, Dunivaig Castle was besieged on at least one occasion and, because of the obdurate behaviour of Angus MacDonald, King James VI finally took the castle into royal custody in 1596/7. Direct royal control was considered to be the best solution, and under threat of siege in 1608 Dunivaig was handed over to the royal lieutenants, Lord Ochiltree and Andrew Knox, Bishop of the Isles. A garrison consisting of a captain and 24 soldiers was housed there, and in 1610, when Dunivaig was granted as a life-rent to the bishop to be maintained at his own expense, the incumbents were required to 'deliver upoun inventorie all suche poulder, bullet, musket and other warfar provision as was left unto thame for keping of the same house'."
In April 1614, according to information presented to the Council by Sir James, son of Angus MacDonald, the castle was captured by a small band under Ronald Oig, 'a vagabound fellow without ony certane residence' who claimed to be a natural son of Angus MacDonald. In a wood nearby they evidently made some ladders with which they scaled the outer wall, and when the castle gates were opened they took the house and ousted the bishop's small garrison.
Shortly afterwards they themselves were besieged by Angus Oig MacDonald and Coil Ciotach MaeGillespie, and apparently after six days were compelled to escape 'at a bak yett in a litle boat with sex oares which lay at the castle'. Angus Oig thereupon refused to release his hold on the castle, placing Coil Ciotach in command of the garrison, and in the following September a military expedition under Bishop Knox failed to regain the stronghold. A punitive royal expedition under the overall command of Sir John Campbell of Cawdor was subsequently successful.
Image attached is a portrait of Andrew Knox currently part of the collection of the Museum of Scotland.
