Jonathan Hill, aged 28 and Dorothy Hill age 25 testified 1 Sept 1692 that during brother John Hill last sickness he said that when debts were paid his wife should enjoy all the estate for life and what was left at her decease should be divided equally between his two daughters. Inventory taken 20 Aug 1692 by Thomas Kilbourn and Samuel Welles; 45 pounds 10 shillings and 6 pence (Manwaring). Net estate was some 31 pounds.
Notes: HFIA states that it had 4 records for John - freeman status in 1699, received property in 1677 -about 31 acres- and 1683- about 20 acres- by gift of his father, marriage in 1670 and probate of 1692.
In the 1901 report of the Hills Family Association, it was stated:
"... a somewhat lengthly statement of facts were given that almost conclusively proves that a Samuel Hills whose birth was unquestionably born in 1671 was the same person whose birth was of record in Saybrook [son of John Hills and Jane the widow Bushnell Hills] as of that date; that his surname and that of his son Samuel was Hills was proved beyond a doubt, and their descendents of modern times are so designated."

General Notes: Wife - Sarah Hills
"The Great Migration Begins, Immigrants to New England 1620-1633," Vol. II, Robert Charles Anderson, 1995 indicates Sarah's birth at about 1638, while Jacobus in "Hale, House and Related Families," pg. 581 calls it "say 1633." The latter date is more consistent with her marriage "by 1651," also per Jacobus.
Jacobus also indicates that Sarah married Stephen Davis after the death of John Ward in 1684. However, there is a contradiction in the text (see pg. 650) which indicates that "Lt." John Ward, Sr. of Newark married widow Hannah (Crane) Huntington after 1685 and that he died between 31 Oct. and 20 Nov. 1694.

New Hartford

NEW HARTFORD
Early Settlement -- Soil -- Products -- Inhabitants -- Manufactories and business of Former Years.
The town of New Hartford was one of the first settled towns in the county, this town and Whitestown were settled about the same time in 1787 or 1788. Judge Sanger bought a tract of land in what was then a wilderness and about the same time the Messrs. Williams, three families of Kelloggs, two of Risleys, two of Olmsteads, Hurlburt, Butler, Shepard, Beach, Kilborn, and Higby, with a few other, commenced the settlement of the town, and being the best of land it was soon taken up by actual settlers from the New England States, men who were brought up to the habits of industry, on the rocky soil of the Eastern States, could not fail in making rapid progress towards compotency and wealth, with such a soil as New Hartford is celebrated for. The town is well watered by the Saquoit and other streams, giving it many fine mill privileges that are well improved.
It is peculiarly adapted to English grain of all kinds, and a fine town for fruit, with a noble breed of cattle as any town in the county except Vernon.
The inhabitants retain the character of the first settlers in maintaining the institutions of Religion and learning, diffusing happiness to families and neighborhood, making the best of society in every district.
The village of New Hartford is pleasantly located four miles south-west of Utica, on what was formerly the great Western Turnpike and before the building of the Erie Canal and great Western Rail Road was the great thoroughfare for all the travel west.
The town contains at this time, 4847 inhabitants, is six miles square, and has in its bounds a larger number of manufacturies than any town in the county --the principal ones are Burr Stone Mills, Cotton Capron or Utica Cotton Mills, Howell's two factories New Hartford Mill, Washington, two factories belonging to F. Hollister, of Utica, a splendid stone building, Rodgers & Spencer's large machine shop and foundary Chadwick & Son's Eagle Mills Cotton Factory, Clark's Cotton Mills on the Oriskany Creek, one of the best built factories in the country, making in the whole ten in number besides a large number of other mechanics located in its borders doing a heavy amount of business.
In 1816 New Hartford village (before the Erie Canal was built) was doing a large merchantile business the Messrs. Wilbur & Stanton, and a few other merchants transacted as heavy a business as any merchants in the county, and the village was in a thriving and growing condition. The building of the Canal diverted trade and travel so that for a number of years the village lost its appearance of thrift then it formerly enjoyed; but, within a few years the manufacturing about it and its excellent farming land has given it the appearance of renewed vigor and beauty. It has some splendid farm houses and country seats showing wealth and taste in their construction.
The first male born in the town is now living near Washington Mills. What a change he has seen

Note: Estate administered by her sister, Elizabeth. According to Jacobus in "Hale, House & Related Families," pg. 579, this may signifiy that none of her brothers were living in England at the time.

Alternate date of baptism: 1 June 1606, per "Hale, House & Related Families," pg. 579. Thomas Hills and his brother(?) William came to Roxbury, MA in 1632 as indentured manservants to the Rev. John Eliot. According to the Hills Family Genealogy, Thomas died before becoming a freeman.
According to the "History of the First Church in Roxbury, MA, 1630-1904," by Walter Eliot Thwing, Thomas came in 1633 (a year after his brother?) and the following is quoted from that book: "He lived among us in good esteem and Godly & dyed about the 11th or 12th month of 1634 and left a good savor behind him, he was a very faithful and prudent servant and good christian. He dyed in Mr. Eliot's family."
This quote appears to confirm the information in the Hills Genealogy that the Hills brothers were indentured to Rev. Eliot.

Note:
William Hills and his brother Thomas were likely born in Upminister, Essex Co., England that county having a great concentration of the name Hills and historical references. The Lyman family were from a neighboring parish in Essex, although William Hills and Phillis Lyman married in Roxbury, MA.
According to the "Hills Family in America," William and and his brother Thomas immigrated to New England on the ship "Lyon," arriving in Boston September, 1632. The ship's master was William Pearce. It sailed from Bristol 24 June 1632 and entered Boston harbor September, 1632. This date is confirmed in the "History of the First Church in Roxbury, MA, 1630-19084," by Walter Eliot Thwing. However, "The Great Migration Begins, Immigrants to New England 1620-1633, Vol. II," by Robert Charles Anderson, 1995, indicates that William migrated in 1632 on the ship "William & Francis" and that it's not proven that he & Thomas were brothers. (According to another text, the Rev. John Eliot, Sr arrived on the ship "Lyon" in 1631; perhaps this is where the confusion arose from.) It is likely that both men became manservants indentured to clergyman Rev. John Eliot at Roxbury, having come on the same ship as Ann Mumford, intended wife of the same minister. Both John Eliot and Ann Mumford/Mountfort were originally from Essex Co. as well. Eliot was referred to as the "Apostle to the Indians."
The church history cited above states that William Hills was a member between 1631 and 1650. He was a manservant who came to Roxbury in 1632. He married Phyllis Lyman; became a Freeman in Roxbury 14 May 1634. Rev. Eliot wrote the following about William: "Williams Hills, a man servant, he came over in the yeare 1632. he married Phillice Lyman, the daughter of Richard Liman, he removed to Hartford on Conecticott, where he lived seuerall years, whout giving such good satisfaction to the conscienes of the saints."
[HISTORIC NOTE: The Massachusetts Bay Colony was formed in 1629. The period between that date and 1641, just prior to the English Civil War, is described as the "Great Migration" during which more than 13,000 left Old England for New.]
Rev. Eliot owned a farm of 48 1/2 acres, 9 acres of salt marsh, 55 1/2 acres in another part of Roxbury, 39 acres in Dedham, Massachusetts and 2 other lots of more than 20 acres. It is likely that the Hills brothers worked on this property while in Eliot's employ.
Thomas Hills, possibly William's brother, died in November or December, 1634 while still indentured. William is shown as a resident of Roxbury, a freeman, 14 May 1634. (Roxbury became part of the city of Boston in 1868.) His period of indenture was less than 2 years. He left Roxbury 15 Oct. 1635 with Richard Lyman, his father-in-law and moved to Hartford, Connecticut. They appear to have migrated with a group from the church of Cambridge which migrated as a body to Hartford with Rev. Hooker and originated the First Church of Hartford. William's name is listed on the Founders Monument in Hartford.
[HISTORIC NOTE: Three areas of Connecticut were settled in 1634 as offshoots of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Wethersfield, Hartford and Windsor. CT became self-governing in 1639 and their Royal Charter was granted in 1662. The movement to CT was accelerated in 1636 when eminent minister Thomas Hooker brought a portion of his Cambridge congregation with him to Hartford. Hooker, formerly an English Anglican minister, had been exiled to Holland for a number of years before coming to the colonies. There he was "rival" to minister Joseph Cotton, the two differing on several doctrinal issues. While some followed Hooker for religious reasons, most were merely economic opportunists. From its beginning, then, CT was unlike the Bay Colony - CT was comprised mainly of young, unmarried men seeking to establish themselves on the land. It wasn't until later that the colony began to take on the demographics of the "parent."]
In the Hartford land inventory of 1639/40, William held nine parcels of land, six of which were granted to him: one acre and one rood with dwelling house, outhouses, yards and gardens; sevens acres of upland; nice acres of upland; one acre and two roods in the South Meadow; another one acre and two roods in the South Meadow; one acre and one rood in the South Meadow; five hundred seventeen acres of upland in Hockanum "bought of Thomas Hosmore;" ten acres of meadow in Hockanum "bought of Thomas Hosmore;" and three acres, two roods and 29 rods of meadow in Hockanum "bought of Francis Andrews."
In the records of the First Church of Hartford, Williams Hills is shown as one of the original members, later noted as "dismissed July 1683, moved to Hadley." Hadley, Massachusetts was the home of William's wife, Mary (Warner) Steele and William died in that month and that year: however, Williams' will was proved 6 Dec. 1683 in Hartford and it's believed that he never made the removal to Hadley; the will is dated 21 Feb. 1681. Jacobus states he died in July, 1683, the inventory being taken in August, totaling 274 pounds, 0s, 2d. He named his wife Mary and son Jonathan as executors. Prior to his death, he agreed to bring up the children of Richard Risley, children of his wife Mary, Risley's widow, and to give them their several portions. Barbour calls Mary Risley his 3rd wife, but she was more likely his 2nd, as Mary (Warner) Steele, who I believe was his 3rd wife, from from Hadley, MA where they removed in about 1683. This order of marriage is confirmed by "The Descendants of Andrew Warner," 1919, by "The Ancestry of Lorenzo Ackley and his wife Emma Arabella Bosworth," N.G. Parke & D.L. Jacobus, 1960, pages. 144-45 and "Hale, House & Related Families," pages. 579-581.

General Notes: Wife - Phyllis Lyman
Phillis Lyman Hills migrated from England to New England with her family in 1631. The date of birth shown is the date of her baptism at High Onger, Essex, Kent, England. She is listed as one of the founding members of the First Church in Roxbury in the book "History of the First Church in Roxbury, MA, 1630-1904," Walter Eliot Thwing, and also as having married William Hills.
Phillis became deaf as a result of illness prior to her death; her exact date of death is unknown, although she died prior to late 1648 when William married a second time. Rev. Eliot wrote the following about Phillis: "Phillis Lyman the daughter of Richard Lyman, she came to the Land with her father ano 1631. God wrought upon her heart in this Land, she grew deaf; with disease increasing was a great affliction to her, she was married to Willia Hills & lived with him at Hartford on Conecticot."
General Notes: Child - Sarah Hills
"The Great Migration Begins, Immigrants to New England 1620-1633," Vol. II, Robert Charles Anderson, 1995 indicates Sarah's birth at about 1638, while Jacobus in "Hale, House and Related Families," pg. 581 calls it "say 1633." The latter date is more consistent with her marriage "by 1651," also per Jacobus.
Jacobus also indicates that Sarah married Stephen Davis after the death of John Ward in 1684. However, there is a contradiction in the text (see pg. 650) which indicates that "Lt." John Ward, Sr. of Newark married widow Hannah (Crane) Huntington after 1685 and that he died between 31 Oct. and 20 Nov. 1694.

He is first on record when he married Deborah Parcher in Portsmouth in1732. His first three children were born there. There were probablyother children, but lists of them have varied so much from researcherto researcher that only the proven one are included here. He bought afarm and settled at Berwick, ME. Later lived at Kittery and Wells, then bought a farm in 1750 in the section called Tatnic. On 13 Apr1767, he, calling himself "Caulker of Portsmouth", deeded farm andproperty to son John, for the support of himself and his wifethroughout their lives. His birth is not recorded in the York townrecords, and his placement as a son of John is not proved.Circumstantial evidence and tradition place him there. It has alsobeen observed that he seemingly had no close relations with the townof York, where John always lived, and that further research inPortsmouth deeds and probates might prove fruitful. The "accepted"ancestry is presented herein, but should be considered questionable.

General Notes: Husband - Thomas Roberts
Thomas Roberts is one of the founding fathers of New Hampshire, with Edward Hilton an original settler in Dover in 1623, the first permanent settlement in New Hampshire. He was, with Edward Hilton, a fellow member of the Fishmongers Company of London and was sent to establish a fishing station under the auspices of the Council of New England, the Council which had been granted most of northern New England by King James I. He was elected 'President of the Court,' an office agency for the Bristol Company, the proprietors of Dover. He signed the Dover Combination October 22, 1640 and in March 1640 was chosen Governor, or President, of the County in place of Governor John Underhil, a position he held until Dover (then Northam) came under Massachusetts rule in 1643. He served on the grand jury 1643, 1646 and 1656. In 1661 he was fined by the town of Dover for missing meetings for thirteen days and ordered to forfeit one cow. In 1662 he publicly rebuked his sons, both constables of Dover, for their harsh treatment of the local Quakers (see Jacobsen, p. 21, 22).

General Notes: Wife - Rebcca Hilton
It has been Roberts family tradition to believe that Rebecca was the sister of Edward Hilton, though there is no contemporary evidence to this effect. Since Thomas Roberts came to New England between 1623-1627 with Edward and Wiliam Hilton; was permanently settled at Dover Point by 1628; and married Rebecca 1625-1629, it is plausible that Rebecca was a Hilton (see Jacobsen, p. 2, 21; Piscataqua Pioneers, p. 363). The Hilton surname, therefore, should be seen as possible and consistent with tradition, but not based on any better evidence.

General Notes: Child - Joseph Roberts
It is not certain that Joseph was the son of Thomas and Rebecca, but a Joseph Roberts received a Dover town bounty in 1665 for killing wolves. No Joseph was named in Thomas Roberts' will, so, if he is a son he predeceased his father.

General Notes: Child - John Roberts
From GDMNH, p. 589 and Jacobsen, p. 25, 26: John resided in Dover where he was a Marshal of the Province by 1670 [discharged because of age in 1681-82]; served on the grand jury in 1683 and 1692; was elected selectman in 1664, 1665, 1668, 1673, 1674, and 1677; and served as surveyor of highways in 1661 and 1668. While constable he and his brother were charged by Massachusetts Bay authorities with ridding the colony of Quakers. In one recorded incident in 1662 he and his brothers dragged two proselytizing Quaker women through the winter snow and threw them into a canoe. He was one of six prominent Dover citizens who convened a convention with citizens of Portsmouth and Exeter, that covnention making a recommendation that New Hampshire be reunited under the government of Massachusetts. John died of dropsy.

General Notes: Child - Thomas Roberts
Served as town constable during which time he, along with his brother John were severely criticized for cruel treatment of Quakers. On order of Walderne he and his brother whipped Quaker women.
From "The Robertses of Northern New England", p. 27: "In 1683 a newly-appointed governor, backing various prior royal rulings in favor of the Mason heirs, began ordering new hampshire landholders to begin paying rent to Robert Mason. Thomas Roberts was one of three prominent residents and "large landowners" summoned to appear before the governor and ordered to arrive at some sort of settlement with Mason. The three engaged Mason in a rancorous session, refused to recognize his title or to pay rent, and demanded instead that the matter be brought directly before the King."
Though it took many years of litigation and appeals, the resident landholders ultimate prevailed and obtained clear title to the lands.

General Notes: Child - Jane Roberts
Chapman, p. 589, has Jane Roberts as the possible daughter of Thomas Roberts. Torrey, p. 576, lists Jane as marrying James Philbrick, but is not certain about the family name of Roberts. It is to be noted that neither the GDMNH nor Jacobsen (Roberts Genealogy) mentions a daughter named Jane. She is listed here as the daughter of Thomas, but this is far from certain.

I exchange data with people who have a interlocking marriage
into any surnames that interlocks into any of the branches
of my families.I started when I was 10 years old now 68years.
I am sharing my data in the interest of collaborative research.
I do this to help people to find there lineages and to fill
the pedigree charts.
I have not personally researched all families listed; dates
and information are subject to verification. Not responsible
for typographical errors misplaced citations. Missing
sources/references are because of my learning curve, not my
intention. You are encouraged to seek further documention
for your own confirmation.Further I have no control what
other people include about their families in any of the
data that they exchange.
If there are no dates about the living, then the computers
can not determine if the person is alive or deceased.
The sites set the living anywhere from 75 to 100 years
depending on the laws of the countries that they are in.
When I exchange with lineages the living are sometime shown
depending on who you are exchanging with, but my
request is that,if you update any of my data to the
internet, you also set the do not show the living, before
you update to the internet.
Also place in the source your contact email
address, and the lineage, so people can contact you
reqarding your update.
I have no claim to owning the data, except that which is
my immediate lineage, and even that is worked on by many
members of my family lineages. It is only as good as what
people put into it,that exchange with me. So look
in the notes of the genealogy for origin, if they put it
there,or the source.
If you are going to correct, update or put new branches on the
lineage your are inquirying about, please do not add from what
I have sent you,(This just duplicates how many more people
I have to find in the duplicates and merge them, edit your
notes to ensure that there is nothing there that you do not
want published.
Also do not submit information on copyrights that invades the
privacy of others especially for a relative that has not given
you permission to publish same.
Remember nothing is carved in stone except time.
The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriages, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 631,749 people via interlocking
marriages.
My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.

Esther Roberts, wife of John Martin
Donald Cooleyadded this on 11 Feb 2009
A genealogy of the family of Thomas Roberts of New Hampshire describes her as "Hester, wife of John Martin, and living in Jersey in 1673". Her given name appears in the Piscataway Town Records as Esther, Hester, and frequently as Easter. Three granddaughters, apparently named for her, appear in birth and death entries in the town records with their names as Esther or Easter. Since currently available information does not furnish conclusive proof of her given name, it will be assumed that her name is Esther which is the name used in the recording of her death.
The will of Easter (Esther) Martin of Piscataway, dated 9 November 1687 and proved 20 December 1687 names children John, Joseph, Thomas Martin, Mary Hull, Martha Langstaff, Lidia Smalley. and Benjamin Martin; and grandchildren Mary and Hope Hull (children of Hopewell Hull) as heirs to land in Piscataway Township and personal property. Son Benjamin Martin is named executor.
John MARTIN and Esther ROBERTS had the following children:
+ 2 i. Mary2 MARTIN was born circa 1646.
+ 3 ii. Martha MARTIN was born circa 1648.
+ 4 iii. John MARTIN was born circa 1650.
+ 5 iv. Joseph MARTIN was born circa 1652.
+ 6 v. Lydia MARTIN was born 1654.
+ 7 vi. Benjamin MARTIN was born circa 1656.
+ 8 vii. Thomas MARTIN was born circa 1659.
9 viii. James MARTIN was born in Piscataway, New Jersey 1669. James died March 21, 1676/7 in Piscataway, New Jersey at 7 years of age. He was interred March 1676/7 in Piscataway, New Jersey.
