EAST MILLINOCKET - Madeline J. Bishop, 89, wife of the late Raymond W. Bishop, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at a Millinocket hospital. She was born July 30, 1920, in Millinocket, the daughter of Joseph F. and Marie E. (Turmenne) Michaud. Madeline was a communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church, East Millinocket; and a member of the Plus and Minus Club and AARP. She enjoyed sewing and knitting, and had made numerous quilts for her children and grandchildren, which will now be a cherished keepsake. Madeline looked forward to playing cards with "the girls" and when her grandchildren were home to visit. She is survived by a son, Charles J. "Chip" Bishop and his wife, Donna, of East Millinocket; a daughter, Judy Sewell and her husband, John, of Ashland, Mass.; five grandchildren, Mark Sewell, Katharine Moineau and her husband, Jeffrey, Laura Prisco and her husband, Greg, Janis Bishop and her friend, David Rodgers, and Darren Bishop; five great-grandchildren, Ashley and Catherine Moineau, and Marisa, Aidan and Kyle Prisco; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, Oliver Michaud, Ludger Michaud, George Michaud, Vincent Michaud, Henry Michaud Sr., Carlton Michaud, Irene Dempsey, Yvette Monteith and Bertha Matthews.

Richard Bishop of Piscataway was originally a First Settler of Duxbury, Massachusetts, where he had a son, James Bishop. He lived with Love Brewster in 1638. Richard Bishop was of Plymouth, and there he hired Nathaniel Souther on January 5, 1640-1. Among those "Able to bear arms in the Colony of New Plymouth. 1643, were Nathl Souther, George Clarke, and Richard Bushop."
. Richard married Alice Clark on December 5, 1644 [possibly as his second wife]. She was the widow of George Clark, and tragically ended her life by murdering her own child, and was subsequently hung therefor, in 1648. There is a mournful account of the murder by Alice Bishop of her daughter, Martha Clarke, 4 years old, July 22, 1648 (Savage, Vol. I, page 393). She also had another daughter, Abigail Clark. There is also reference to "Damaris, (wife of the first William Sutton), daughter of Alice and Richard Bishop". When William Sutton removed to New Jersey, Bishop sold his property at Duxbury, and went to live with him. Richard Bishop was called "of Piscattaway in Artercull or New Jersey," when he sold to Capt. Benjamin Church his property in the Colony (Winsor's Duxbury, page 228.).

James Bishop lived in Duxbury and Pembroke, Massachusetts. He married Mary Hudson on December 12, 1665. He owned land on Indian Head River in Duxbury in 1679.
Note: In his book, The Bonney Family, 1898, C. L. Bonney stated that John and James Bonney both married daughters of James Bishop, the Deputy Governor of the Connecticut Colony. THIS IS NOT CORRECT. Part of the confusion is caused by the fact that both the Pembroke and New Haven James Bishops had a wife named Mary and daughters named Elizabeth and Abigail. However the New Haven James Bishop's daughter, Elizabeth, was born May 3, 1657 (7 years before John Bonney) and on September 12, 1667 married Eleazer Giles and his daughter, Abigail, was born October 30, 1659 (12 years before James Bonney) and she married (1) John Talmage and (2) William Maltbie. Mary Bishop's will is further proof of the mistake by C. L. Bonney.

On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph G. Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no sources. In that letter she identified Jedediah and Tabitha as parents of James and Deborah Soule.

"Mayflower Families In Progress" series' volume on "George Soule of the Mayflower and His Descendants for Four Generations", 2nd ed., published by The General Society of Mayflower Descendants in 1995, identifies ,Ebenezer and Amie (Stetson) Bishop as parents of Tabitha.

..."Ambrose's wife Deborah Soule was the daughter of Jedediah and Tabitha (Bishop) Soule and was the great great granddaughter of George Soule who came to Plymouth on the MAYFLOWER in 1620. Her grandmother Mercy (Southworth) Soule Was the daughter of Edward and Mary (Peabody) Southworth. Mary Peabody was the granddaughter of John and Priscilla (Mullins) Alden who came to Plymouth on the MAYFLOWER in 1620."

Funeral services will be conducted at the Sacred Heart church at Winn, Saturday morning at 9 o'clock, with interment in the family lot in Winn Cemetery.

Alexander left Scotland at the age of 14, and lived in Dimerana, in the West Indies, for 18 years. He owned a plantation, raising cotton, coffee and other produce. He owned Negro slaves. He brought produce to Boston, Massachusetts on the ship of Solomon Dockendorff, Jr., to be sure to get his money. Solomon asked him to come home with him, where he met Solomon's sister, Jane, a girl of 20 years, whom he loved at first sight. Alexander went back to the West Indies, sold out, came back to Round Pond, Maine, and married her. She bore him 14 children, 13 of whom lived to adulthood.
Alexander was naturalized on 24 Apr 1839 in the District Court of Lincoln County, Maine. On the certificate he listed himself as a farmer in Scotland, and came to America from Dimerana, West Indies, on 1 Apr 1824, arriving in Bristol, Maine on 25 May 1824.
Alexander was a sea captain and was the second Postmaster of Round Pond, Maine from 9 Jul 1857 to 19 Aug 1861.
