In 911, the weak French monarchy under the Carolingian CHARLES III (The Simple), granted the lands at the estuary of the Seine River to Rollo, known as Rolf the Ganger"(860? to 931?), a Norwegian Viking, and his Danish followers in return for an alliance against other Vikings, thus laying the foundation for the duchy of NORMANDY.
Rollo was a Viking who raided the coast of France each year (c.890-910) until Charles III gave him his daughter, Gisella, in marriage and all the land that became Normandie. Hence Rollo was the first Duke of Normandie.
Rollo had been outlawed by Harald Fairhair and this forced him to settle in Normandie.
Rollo, the Viking, was granted land in Northwestern France in 911 AD by Charles the Simple, King of France. Charles hoped that Rollo would defend his new land, barring the length of the Seine River to other Viking groups. Rollo remained faithful to Charles and he and his son quickly expanded the original land grant at the expense of neighboring French lords and guarded it well against Viking rivals. Even before Rollo's grandson, Richard, took over the domain in 942, the descendants of the Vikings had accepted Christianity, intermarried with the local population and adopted the French language. Already they were being called Normans, a contraction of Northmen, and there territory became known as Normandie.

General Notes: Husband - John Ramsay
John Ramsay arrived at Princetown Royalty in Prince Edward Island on the Annabella in 1770 from Cambelltown, Kintyre, Scotland with his wife Margaret Taylor and his sons Donald, John, Neil, Archibald, Angus, and Malcolm and his nephews Malcolm and Edward. John Ramsay had been a large farmer in the Old Country and possessed considerable means. He came to this country to recoup losses for money loaned by him in Scotland, but met with indifferent success and until his death deeply deplored his adventure. His name appears in the early records of the Province as one of the first Grand Juryman Empannelled at Charlottetown, in August 1771.

He served during Revolutionary War enlisting (place not stated) at the commencement of the war, and served until the end of 1776 as a private. He was in the Battle of Trenton and guarded prisoners, taken in that engagement, to Philadelphia where he enlisted in January 1777, in Capt. Fowles Co., Col. John Greaton's 3d Mass. Regt., discharged June 8, 1783 having served six years, five months. He was honored with the Badge of Merit for six years faithful service. A descriptive list dated 25 Jan 1781 at Westpoint: Age 21 years; stature, 5ft, 6in; complexion, light; hair, dark; eyes, blue; residence, Lynn, Mass., enlisted 1 Jan 1777 by Lieut. Tuttle for duration of the War. He was allowed a Pension on account of his service on his application executed April 27, 1818, at which time he resided in Lubec, Washington Co. Mass. (now Maine). He was then in the 57th year of his age
