MONTGOMERY, ROBERT HAYWARD - of Woodstock, NB passed away at the Carleton Manor on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at the age of 93. Born at Rockland, Carleton County July 2, 1915, Bob was the son of the late Harold and Lena (Hayward) Montgomery. He moved to Woodstock with his family at an early age where he attended elementary and high school beforemoving on to graduate from the Provincial Normal School. He then taught at several schools in the area including Prince William, Bannon, Debec and Victoria Corner. As was the case with thousands of his generation, Bob joined the war effort and enlisted in the RCAF in September, 1941. He served overseas during World War II in England and North Africa from 1942 to 1945. His service was honoured by the awarding of medals including the Africa Star, the Volunteer Service Medal and the Defence of England Medal. Bob received special training before being sent overseas. It was so secret at the time that he was not told the reasonfor the extensive and difficult courses until his deployment. Today we know that he was one of the first technicians to be trained on whatwas the secret weapon of the day - radar. Upon his return from war time duties, he lived in Somerville with his family until his retirementin 1976. Bob worked for the New Brunswick provincial government as Director of Hospital Insurance and then as Director of Welfare for Carleton County. He then tried his hand in the private sector as the proprietor of the Blue Jay restaurant and variety store in Hartland. In retirement, he served as the manager of the Woodstock Cemetery Company andkept busy restoring antique caned chairs and with his hobby of paper tole. Bob was an active supporter of his community and belonged to several organizations including the Independent Order of Oddfellows, The Masonic Lodge, The Order of the Eastern Star and the Legion. He was a member of the Hartland and Woodstock Baptist Churches during his many years living in both communities. Many of his fellow members will remember Bob as the organist in addition to many other roles he filled forthese organizations. Bob leaves a big gap in the lives of his family- his wife Marion (Monteith - Jones), his sons Robert (Edith Nevers) of Calgary and Ned (Lorna Taylor) of Niagara-on-the-Lake and his daughter Carolyn Corey (John) of Hartland. He was very proud of his eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Bob was predeceased in 1990 by Ruth (Monteith), his wife of 53 years. Resting at the Scott FuneralHome 815 Main Street Woodstock, NB with Visiting on Thursday from 2-4& 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held on Friday, at 1 pm from the Scott Funeral Home Chapel. Rev Leonard Cousins will be officiating with interment in the Methodist Cemetery.

General Notes: Husband - James Montgomery
At the age of 16, James arrived in the new world with his Father, William, RIN 538, and family, on September 1, 1718, at Boston Harbor, on the ship “Maccullom”, amongst a fleet of five ships from Ireland that day. The passengers and ships reorganized and sailed for Casco Bay, Maine, between September 22-29, 1718. The family lived in the Merrymeeting Bay area of Maine for a few years, then removed to Hopkinton, Massachusetts. (See William Montgomery, RIN 538, for more details in notes.)
Lived in Hopkinton, Middlesex County, MA, between 1724 and 1737:
1. By 1724, his father, William Montgomery, was one of fourteen who, with a pastor, established Christ Church at Hopkinton, MA.
2. His sister, Abigail, would marry John Harper in (Christ Church) First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, MA, in 1728. (“In 1728, Rev. Samuel Barrot officiated the wedding of William's daughter, Abigail, to John Harper in the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, MA”)
3. According to HENRY GENEOLOGY, page 72, by William Henry Eldridge, 1915:
Mary Henry, who married James Montgomery, was with her brothers, William Henry and Robert Henry, in Hopkinton, MA, by 1730/31; m. James Montgomery, 23 Jan 1732, n Hopkinton, MA; then the two Henry families and the James Montgomery family all moved to Blandford, MA, ca 1735.
4. According to the STEWART CLAN MAGAZINE, Vol. IV, No. 2, August 1925:
A. “John Stewart probably came from Ireland with the immigrants of 1718.” “He tarried a while in Londonderry, N.H.” and moved to Boxford, later moving to Hopkinton to join his brother (Walter) after the death of his first wife. He there remarried and was a blacksmith. He sold in 1737 to Peter Luce of Boston, “. . . He then removed to Blandford, a Scotch-Irish settlement called New Glasgow, in the western part of the state, in company with others from Hopkinton who had seceded from the church*.” “*On April 9, 1732, the (Congregational) church at Hopkinton voted the acceptance of the Cambridge platform, which gave great offense to the Scotch Presbyterians, and James Montgomery, Robert Cooke, William Henry, Walter Stewart, Robert Huston, John Hamilton, Robert Barrett and others absented themselves from communion and later organized a new church.”
B. Of Samuel Stewart: “. . . later appeared in Blandford, Mass., where in 1759 Samuel had a license as innholder on Beech hill, which adjoined the town of Granville: in 1761 he sold his lots in Blandford to James Montgomery.”
5. According to "Our County and Its People", by By Alfred Minott Copeland, as to the founding of the Village of Blandford:
On the formation of New Glasgow / Blandford, MA: "And whereas the said Christopher Jacob Lawton hath since purchased of the aforesaid commoners and proprietors all their several respective rights of, in and to the aforesaid tract of land except the rights of Josiah Sheldon and the heirs of Joshua Leavitt, deceased, of said Suffield, and hath agreed with Robert Senot, James Freeland, John Osborne, Hugh Harableton, Hugh Black, Comeinne Anderson, James Beard, Joseph Rice, Benjamin Woods, Samuel Karmer, James Montgomery, Armon Hambleton, Israel Gibbs, Robert Henry, Jonathan Boyce, James Wark, Robert Black, John Osborne, John Humbleton, Jeremiah Anderson, William Province, James MacCletick, Samuel Ferguson, James Freeland, Jr., John Houstin, Samuel Cook, Daniel Stone, Robert Houston, David Boyce, John Stuart, William Knox, Samuel Crooks, Samuel Tyger, William Anderson, William Barker, Samuel Wark, Alexander Osborn, Thomas Reed, Matthew Blair, Robert Cook, John Cockhoran, Robert Hambleton, Hugh Hambleton, Daniel Howe, Adam Knox, John Knox, Joseph Freeland, John Stuart, Robert Huston, Samuel Cook, William Dunaghoi, William Province, James Beard, John Cockran, Robert Hambleton, for the settlement of 60 families on said land in such manner and within such time as in the said proviso, in the aforementioned grant is contained and to whom the said Christopher Jacob Lawton hath covenanted to grant the several quantities hereafter mentioned, viz. : To fifty families 120 acres each, to two families 60 acres each, to five families 40 acres each, to one family 30 acres . . ."
"The people named in the above cited deed from Lawton to Brinley, were, for the most part, those who came to Glasgow from Hopkinton, Mass. It came about in this way: A Congregational church was organized in Hopkinton Sept. 2d, 1724. Seven of the original members of the church were Scotch Presbyterians, and five others soon after joined. As nothing was said at the outset about a form of church government, these men could conscientiously assent to the covenant and unite in Christian communion. April 9th, 1731, the church voted "to comply with the Platform of Church Discipline agreed to by the Synod of Churches assembled at Cambridge, 1649, as the rule of their discipline, so far as they apprehended it to be agreeable to the Word of God." This voting the church Congregational gave great offense to the Presbyterians. About ten families withdrew from the communion of the church. They were brought under discipline and eventually several of them excommunicated.
In 1734, they organized a Presbyterian church, built a small meeting-house about one and one-half miles west of the village, near what is known as the Ellery place. Subsequently, on the removal of many of these families to Blandford, this church organization was, by consent of Presbytery, transferred to that town, where it existed till 1800. The list of membership of the First Congregational Church in Hopkinton contains the names of those who were excommunicated. Of them are the names of Robert Cooke, William Dunaghoi, Robert Hambleton, Robert Huston, Hugh Black and his wife, William Henry, Matthew Blair, Sarah Montgomery, Robert Black, Jane Wark, Rebecca Wark, James Montgomery, John Hambleton, Adam Knox, Israel Gibbs, Mary Gibbs, Israel Walker, Mrs. Robert Sennet, Mrs. Robert Cook, Hugh Hambleton and wife, Walter Steward and wife, Mrs. J. S. Montgomery, Mary Hambleton, and these people went to Blandford, then called New Glasgow, and took their church with them. Tradition has it that they were promised a church bell from the city of Glasgow if they would call the town Glasgow, and continue that name.
In this tract of land the lots for settlers were laid out. Mr. Gibbs said that, "The settlers selected their farm lots, and the names of several families who obtained farms on the west side of the town street, are left on record, viz. : Messrs. Black, Reed, McClinton, Taggart, Brown, Anderson, Hamilton, Wells, Blair, Stewart, Montgomery, Boise, Ferguson, Campbell, Wilson, Sennett, Young, Knox and Gibbs. The majority of the above-named persons became permanent residents upon the lots they drew."
6. According to: "Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of the State of Massachusetts", by William Richard Cutter, William Frederick Adams, MA, 1910:
"In 1759 was the first year a school was taught by a female, as appears by the records: "Granted six pounds for schooling this year. Voted, Chosen Isreal Gibbs, James Montgomery, William Michel, to be committee to Hiar a School Deame, and so Dispurs the money Granded by the town to Defra the charges of the schooling, and to employ a school master when they think it will be Best for the town this year."
"In those days farm tools were of a very rude and primitive type. The method of harvesting was curoius, and tradition states that the laborers in the "North Meadow" - and expecially Isreal Gibbs - used a straight stick, which answered a three-fold purpose, that is as swath, rake and fork, and it was so awkward that it was then, and even now anything that is coarse, is called a "Gibb-sey".
". . . it appears that . . . that those Scotch settlers were as fond of spirits as their Anglo Saxcon neighbors. In 1756 it was voted, "That the town shall pay . . . the first cost for the Rum and sugar the Council shall Need while they Sit Hear.""
7. According to the book, "Taverns and Turnpikes of Blandford, MA 1733-1833" in describing the early settlement of Blandford, MA, tells the following about a very early Blandford road / rood / turnpike, "The road had been originally laid out coincident with the division line between the two tiers of first division home lots, but had to be shifted somewhat irregularly to the westward in order to avoid the ravine and brook running through it. The road is now spoken of sometimes as Falls road. A very early town lay-out of the road was on this wise: "Put to voat to see if the Town will establishthe Road South of the meeting hous beginning at the Northwest Corner of the Rev. mr mortons ortcherd as the road now goes to the west of the widoe Hamiltons House from thence as the road now Goes through widow Provans Land from thence as the Road now gos through the Land of James Campbls from thence through James and Robert M' Gomarys Land Said Rood to be three Roods wid.
In 1771, this road was somewhat minutely described in a county lay-out. On the course from Granville, after crossing "Pebbles Brook", it (the turnpike) was described as extending to a great rock in the middle of the River. Then climbing the steep hill, it ran by Robert Montgomery's fence to a heap of stones near a path in the field about 7 rods west of Montgomery's house, then north 42 perch (perch = 5-1/2 yards) to a great red oak six rods west of James Montgomery's.
The first Montgomery lived on the Lot first owned by Hugh Black (known in 1908 as the Osborne place). James occupied the next lot to the north. Not long after this, Robert Montgomery sold out his possessions there and moved up to Beech Hill, where he was living in the eighties (1780's) and carried on a retail license. James Montgomery had bought his lot of 1761 of Samuel Stewart who had an innholder's license . . ." Many times in these early records the surname was spelled, "Mt Gomery", and "Mongumery", etc.
From lists of Blandford Selectmen:
1747 - David Boies, Robert Wilson, Jas. Montgomery, John Stewart, John Hamilton
1758 - Robert Henry, John Knox, David Black, John Boies, James Montgomery
With his first wife, Mary Henry Montgomery, one of his children was born in Hopkinton, MA, and two in Blandford, MA. Of his second marriage to Kathren (?), two children were born in Blandford, MA.

John and Isabella had 3 sons named William, Hugh, and Robert. This means that Hugh Montgomery, (1689- 1767) had father named Robert, and two uncles, named Hugh, and William. This does show one thing, that these 3 names do absolutely run in the family. It would not be unusual for Robert to follow his father John's naming pattern for his own sons, when he started his own family.
So, there they were at the beginning, in Ireland, before they left, the Montgomery brothers, all part of same group which would go to the new world . . .
Excerpt From: The Scots-Irish: The Thirteenth Tribe, by Raymond Campbell Paterson
The Real Cause of the Emigration:
"The Ulster Presbyterians had endured, and survived, past waves of religious discrimination, and would most likely have continued to thrive in the face of official hostility. But in the early years of the new century they were faced with an additional challenge, one that threatened the whole basis of their economic existence in Ireland. By 1710, most of the farm leases granted to the settlers in the 1690’s had expired. New leases were withheld until the tenants agreed to pay greatly increased rents, which many could simply not afford to do. Rather than submit to these new conditions, whole communities, led by their ministers, began to take ship for the Americas. A new exodus was about to begin.
In 1719, the year after the first great wave moved west, Archbishop William King wrote an account of the migration from Ulster, pinpointing the real source of the upheaval:
“Some would insinuate that this in some measure is due to the uneasiness dissenters have in the matter of religion. But this is plainly a mistake, for dissenters were never more easy as to that matter than they had been since the Revolution [of 1688] and are at present, and yet never thought of leaving the kingdom till oppressed by the excessive rents and other temporal hardships. Nor do any dissenters leave us, but proportionally of all sorts, except Papists.
The truth is this: after the Revolution, most of the kingdom was waste, and abandoned of people destroyed in the war. The landlords, therefore, were glad to get tenants at any rate and let their lands at very easy rents. They invited abundance of people to come over here, especially from Scotland, and they lived here very happily ever since. But now their leases are expired, and they are obliged not only to give what they paid before the Revolution, but in most places double and in many places treble, so that it is impossible for people to live or subsist on their farms.”
In the Spring of 1718, a body of Scotch- Irish from Northern Ireland sent a petition, signed by 319 representative men on 26 March 1718(1), to Governor Shiite of Massachusetts Bay in the New World requesting land for settlement. The Rev. William Boyd was dispatched from Ulster to Boston, with the petition, as an agent of the Scotch-Irish to express their desire for settlement in New England.
The petition read as follows:
"We whose names are underwritten, Inhabitants of ye North of Ireland, Doe in our own names, and in the names of many others, our Neighbors, Gentlemen, Ministers, Farmers, and Tradesmen, Commissionate and appoint our trusty and well beloved friend, the Reverend Mr. William Boyd, of Macasky, to His Excellency, the Right Honorable Collonel Samuel Suitte, Governour of New England, and to assure His Excellency of our sincere and hearty Inclination to Transport ourselves to that very excellant and renowned Plantation upon our obtaining from His Excellency suitable incouragement. And further to act and Doe in our Names as his prudence shall direct. Given under our hands this 26th day of March, Anno Dom. 1718."
Governor Shute was in the third year of his administration of the colony. He was an old soldier of King William, a Lieutenant- Colonel under Marlborough in the Queen Anne wars and had been wounded in one of the great battles in Flanders.
There was much to be done by a family before removal to America. A supply of food, clothing and bedding was necessary and the household goods had to be packed for the long voyage. The land, farm animals and the heavier tools must be sold. These were busy days and the partings must have been hard on all, unless friends hoped to follow soon or be along on the same journey. In leaving their Churches the emigrants did not fail to procure testimonials of good standing to be used in forming fresh religious ties in New England. (Bolton)
The Irish ships began arriving in America in July, 1718. William and his brothers, Hugh and Robert, sons of Robert Montgomery, grandsons of John and Isabella Montgomery of Aghadowey, Ireland, were aboard some of the five ships which sailed into the little warf at the foot of State Street in Boston, among one-hundred and twenty Scotch-Irish families from Northern Ireland.
Ships recorded as arriving from Ireland in 1718, as recorded in the “News-Letter” newspaper in Boston, include:
Week of July 21- 28 - The “William & Mary”, James Montgomery, Master. (Aboard was the Reverend William Boyd of Macosquin, with “news of many families coming”.)
Week of July 28- Aug 4 - The “(unnamed ship)”, John Wilson, Master, with “200 souls aboard”
August 4 - The Brigantine “Robert”, James Ferguson, Master, including Rev. James MacGregor, Hugh Montgomery, Sr. and many others
August 4 - The “William”, Archibald Hunter, Master, from Coleraine
August 4 - The “Mary Anne”, Andrew Watt, Master, from Dublin
September 1 - The “Maccullom- (McCullom), James Law, Master, from Londonderry with “20 odd families - and linen
September 1 - The “William”, the “Elizabeth- with passengers and provisions, the “Mary and Elizabeth- at 45 tons with 100 passengers and linen (R.J. Dickson, 1966), and the “Dove"- at 70 tons
September 4 - The “Pink Dolphin”, John Mackay, Master, from Dublin
Boston was a town of approximately 12,000 people at this time. Many of the families were natives of Scotland whose heads had passed over into Ulster during the short reign of James II. Several of these families were well off, including the Cargills, who had cousins Jean (Hugh Montgomery) and Mary (John McMurphy) arriving on the ships. These families, or their fathers and neighbors, had felt the edge of the sword of Graham of Claverhouse in Argyleshire, Scotland (Scotch- Irish Society, 1889).
Others in the body were the descendents of those who had participated in the original colonization of Ulster dating from 1610. Still others included descendents of those Scotchmen and Englishmen that Cromwell transplanted at the middle of the century to replace those wasted by his own sword. A few native Irish families were also mingled in. They were escaping the economic and religious oppression there and the fear of their lives from the warring religious factions.
One motive of Massachusetts in providing settlement lands to the Scotch- Irish was to have them settle on the frontiers (in Maine, among others) as a living shield against the French and the Indians. The motive of the Ulstermen in coming to New England was to be free to worship as they saw fit and to establish homes and commercial activities with less government control and ownership of the land.
The Scotch-Irish emigrants were offended at being called 'Irish' because they had frequently ventured their lives for the British Crown against the Irish Papists(4). The people in New England did not understand the distinction and it was some time before they were treated with common decency. Inter- marriage among the Scotch- Irish families was very common for the first few generations because of the ill- treatment that they received from established settlers.

Robert Montgomery and wife, Mary McCollum, had more than the one son, Hugh, Sr. (Robert probably named his son, Hugh, after Mary's father, Hugh McCollum). It would also be quite customary if he had named a son after himself--"Robert".
Londonderry, N.H. town records mention a Robert Montgomery who arrived about 1720, possibly Hugh, Sr.'s brother. This Robert had 4 children: sons, Hugh and Robert, and daughters, Martha and Margaret. Margaret married a Mr. Steel. All are mentioned by Robert in his will.
Also in town records:
On Oct. 24, 1762, Hugh Montgomery, Jr., yeoman, "buys land of Robert Montgomery, husbandman," (bk. 86, pg. 162). In 1765, Hugh, Jr. buys land again from this same Robert, (bk. 86, pg. 162), (supposed to have been Hugh, Jr.'s father's brother, Robert). In 1765, Robert was no doubt in advanced yrs., and may have been near death at the time. It was common practice to sell property to a close relative, instead of putting it in a will. Hugh Montgomery III's grandson, Chester Montgomery, wrote a long letter, dated May 5, 1890, (at advanced age of 81 yrs.) stating, "............... and if I was correctly informed in my childhood by my father, my grandfather, Hugh, came with 2 brothers and a small colony from Ireland". (This is actually a reference to Chester's great-great grandfather, Hugh, from Ireland in 1718).
