Alias:<ALIA> "The /Wise"./
King Dygve's son, called Dag, succeeded to him, and was so wise a man th
at he understood the language of birds. He had a sparrow which told him mu
ch news, and flew to different countries. Once the sparrowflew to Reidgot
aland, to a farm called Varva, where he flew into the peasant's corn-fie
ld and took his grain. The peasant came up, took a stone, and killed the s
parrow. King Dag was ill-pleased that the sparrow did not come home; a
nd as he, in a sacrifice of expiation, inquired after the sparrow, he g
ot the answer that it was killed at Varva. Thereupon he ordered a great ar
my, and went to Gotland; and when he came to Varva he landed with his m
en and plundered, and the people fled away before him. King Dag return
ed in the evening to his ships, after having killed many people and tak
en many prisoners. As they were going across a river at a place called Skj
otan's [the Weapon's] Ford, a labouring thrall came running to the river-s
ide, and threw a hay- fork intotheir troop. It struck the king on the hea
d, so that he fell instantly from his horse and died. In those times the c
hief who ravaged a country was calledGram, and the men-at-arms under h
im Gramer. Thjodolf sings of it thus: --
"What news is this that the king's men,
Flying eastward through the glen,
Report? That Dag the Brave, whose name
Is sounded far and wide by Fame --
That Dag, who knew so well to wield
The battle-axe in bloody field,
Where brave men meet, no more will head
The brave -- that mighty Dag is dead!
"Varvawas wasted with the sword,
And vengeance taken for the bird --
The little bird that used to bring
News to the ear of the great king.
Varva was ravaged, and the strife
Was ended, when the monarch's life
Was ended too -- the great Dag fell
By the hay-fork of a base thrall!"
General Notes: Child - Agne
Agne was the name of Dag's son, who was king after him -- a powerful and c
elebrated man, expert, and exercised in all feats. It happened one summ
er that King Agne went with his army to Finland, and landed and maraude
d. The Finlandpeople gathered a large army, and proceeded to the strife u
nder a chief called Froste. There was a great battle, in which King Agne g
ained the victory, and Froste fell there with a great many of his peopl
e. King Agne proceeded with armed hand through Finland, subdued it, and ma
de enormous booty. He took Froste's daughter Skjalv, and her brother Log
e, and carried them along with him. When he sailed from the east he ca
me to land at Stoksund, and put up his tent on the flat side of the rive
r, where then there was a wood. King Agne had at the time the gold orname
nt which had belonged to Visbur. He now married Skjalv, and she begged h
im to make burial feast in honour of her father. He invited a great many g
uests, and made a great feast. He had become very celebrated by his expedi
tion, and there was a great drinking match. Now when King Agne had got dra
nk, Skjalv bade him take care of his gold ornament which he had about h
is neck; therefore he took hold of the ornament, and bound it fast about h
is neck before he went to sleep. The land-tent stood at the wood side, a
nd a high tree over the tent protected it against the heat of the sun. N
ow when King Agne was asleep, Skjalv took a noose, and fastened it under t
he ornament. Thereupon her men threw down the tent-poles, cast the lo
op of the nooseup in the branches of the tree, and hauled upon it, so th
at the king was hanged close under the branches and died; and Skjalv wi
th her men ran down to their ships, and rowed away. King Agne was buried u
pon the spot, which was afterwards called Agnefet; and it lies on the ea
st side of the Tauren, and west of Stoksund. Thjodolf speaks of it thu
s: --
"How do ye like the high-souled maid,
Who, with the grim Fate-goddess' aid,
Avenged her sire? -- made Swithiod's king
Through air in golden halter swing?
How do ye like her, Agne's men?
Think ye that any chief again
Will court the fate your chief befell,
To ride on wooden horse to hell?"

"served at Ticonderoga in Capt. Scott's company, Colonel Ashley's
regiment from New Hampshire, 1777. "DAR LINAGE BOOK - VOL 68, p. 69
Their marriage is shown as 1770 in the Attleborough Vital Records but as
1777 in the RehobothVital Records. Given that their first son is born
in 1771, probably the former is correct.
General Notes: Wife - Beulah Dryer

Notes: Marriage
Marriage date in 1777 from "Vital Records of Rehoboth - 1642-1896" by
James N. Arnold. p. 117. In "Vital Records of Attleboro", by "The Essex
Institute" p. 391 the marriage date is Oct 10, 1770. Their first son,
John, is not shown in the Attleboro records but their daughter, Nancy,
born in 1773, and Lydia, born in 1775, are. Thus I am tentatively
accepting the earlier marriage date.

General Notes: Husband - Gabriel Peltier
Notes: these notes were furnished by <ahref="mailto:peltierj@cadvision.com">Jack Peltier</a>, and represent datafrom Denissen, Assumption parish documents, other local documents, andJack himself.
Notes for Gabriel: From the "Commemorative Biographical Record of KentCounty", p. 294: Gabriel died in 1845 at 88 years of age and his widowdied 10 years later at the age of 94. They were buried in St-Peter Churchcemetery. All of their children are deceased: Charles, Louis, Leon,Gabriel, Andrew, Fanny, who married Alexander Galarneau, Madeline (Mrs..Peck) and Mary who married Edward Parson. Gabriel took part in the war of1812.
From the "IllustratedHistory of Kent and Essex Counties", 1876:
"The banks of the Pain Court creek, below the village of that same name, were first settled by French residents from 1815 to 1820, the pioneer ofthat locality being J. Bte Loson (Lauson), who was followed by GabrielPeltier, J. Bte Fobert (Faubert), Louis Dezillia and J. Bte Primeau, inthe order named. All these parties took possession of the land as"squatters" but at their request Surveyor-General Rankin was sent up tosurvey a tract hereabout (to which is now accorded the name of the PainCourt Block), whereupon the squatters were granted patents for theirholdings."
Jack Peltier notes: The first record of land ownership for Gabriel seemsto be a portion of Lot 3, Front Concession which he purchased in 1830.The J. Bte Fobert (Faubert) referred to appears to be Gabriel'sbrother-in-law. J Bte married Suzanne Peltier, Gabriel's sister.Gabriel's son, André, married J. Bte and Suzanne's daughterCatherine.
From "Romantic Kent", by Victor Lauriston, 1952, page 355:
"The Pain Court settlement dates from 1815. It was the beginning of aninflux that in time made Dover predominantly French. French-Canadiansettlers from the Detroit had seemingly preceded the Loyalists on theThames; but in 1815, two families, Baby and Paquette, definitely locatedon lots 6 and 7 on the north bank; and the same year a group comprisingJ.B. Lauzon, Gabriel Peltier, J.B. Faubert, Louis Dezilla and J.B.Primeau located further inland, on the banks of what later was known asPain Court Creek."
Jack Peltier notes: Various records show Gabriel as having been buried atSt-Peters. Denissen shows him as having died at Assumption but perhaps hewas not buried there. There is no record of his burial (or that of hiswife Catherine Dagneau-de-Quindre) at St-Peters. It can be speculatedthat a service was held at St-Peters but actual burial was elsewhere, perhaps at a family plot. Records in the Tilbury Library show his deathas being in 1842.
From "Kent County Land Records":
Gabriel Peltier acquired 38.5 acres in Lot 3, Front Concession, DoverEast from Charles Delisle on June 1, 1830 for 75 pounds. Jack Peltiernotes that this land would have been located adjacent to, or very closeto the land owned by his father-in-law, Fontenay Dequindre and CharlesDequindre in Lot 4. Gabriel appears to have sold a portion of these landsin 1854 to Edward Urquhart.
Notes for Catherine Dagneau-de-Quindre:
From "Records of Assumption Church":
"The 3rd June 1791, we the undersigned priest baptized, conditionally,Catherine, natural daughter of Sr Charles Stanislaus Dequindre, agedabout 16 years, godfather, Charles Boulanger and godmother Dame AgathChene Sterling. Signatures: Charles Stanislaus, Charles Boulanger andDufaux, Priest."
No place of birth is given. Charles is recorded as her natural father.Marie-Catherine, wife of Charles Stanislaus, had died prior to this timebut had she been Catherine's mother one would think that the recordswould have shown her as the mother, deceased.
Agathe Chene Sterling (Marie-Catherine's sister) was the godmother, butshe is not referred to as her aunt as might have been the case ifMarie-Catherine had been Catherine's natural mother.
Why was Catherine not baptized until she was about 16 years old, particularly in a place like Detroit where both Ste-Anne's and Assumptionwere established? The participation of Marie-Catherine's relatives atyoung Catherine's baptism and later at her marriage would seem toindicate that Catherine was recognized and accepted by theChene-dit-Labutte family.
Jack Peltier notes that it has been speculated that Catherine was thedaughter of an Indian spouse of Charles Stanislaus. Charles was aLieutenant in the British Indian department and was involved with theShawnee tribe circa 1778. The names Fontenay, Dagneau and Dequindreappear in baptismal records at Fort Vincennes, Indiana, about this timeperiod, including what appear to be Indian or mixed blood children withthose names. Charles Stanislaus and his brothers "Picanier" and"Pontchartrain" were certainly in that area during that time period.
Assumption Church records note that Catherine married Gabriel Peltier onFebruary 2, 1795 at the church. In the marriage record Gabriel isreferred to as the son of André Peltier and Catherine Meloche (deceased).
Charles Stanislaus is referred to as Catherine's father but no mention ismade of her mother. Julien and Alexis Chene are described as "friends ofthe bride".
If Marie-Catherine had been Catherine's mother, they would have describedas her uncles (they were Marie-Catherine's brothers). Once again,Marie-Catherine's relatives were present at an important event inCatherine's life, indicating some recognition and acceptance by theChene-dit-Labutte family.
Catherine's father, Charles, was known to have been in Kaskaskias,Illinois, in 1764 (he would have been about 16 years old) where he isrecorded (La population des Forts français d'Amérique du XVIII siècle -Faribault Beauregard) as having been godfather to Véronique Beauvais, thedaughter of negro slaves owned by Jean-Baptiste Beauvais. He may wellhave been the "cadet" Dequindre who delivered a message from PierreJoseph Neyon de Villiers, commandant of Fort Chartres, to the Indianchief Pontiac in September 1763 telling Pontiac that no French help wascoming to assist him in his siege of Detroit. Charles' presence in thearea of Kaskaskias and Chartres at that time suggest some involvementwith commerce (fur trading, etc.) or the military.
Charles Stanislaus would have been about 14 years old when his uncle,Captain François-Marie Picoté, Sieur de Belestre surrendered Detroit tothe British in 1760 (author's note: this was the same year that Vaudreuilsurrendered Montréal to the British). Several of his brothers appear tohave been officers in "les troupes de la marine" and later in the BritishIndian Department. Given the prominent position of his father, LouisCésaire Dagneau de Douville de Quindre-dit-Fontenay (wealthy trader andcolonel of the French militia in Detroit) and of his mother's family(Picoté de Belestre) it is very likely that he would have been involvedboth in commerce and the military. Charles Stanislaus' ancestors appearto have been members of the French aristocracy.
Charles Stanislaus would have been about 29 when Catherine was born in1775. Three years later, in early 1778, Charles was a Lieutenant in theBritish Indian Department and participated in the capture of Daniel Booneat Blue Licks in Kentucky. Later that same year he participated in theBritish expedition from Detroit to recapture Fort Sackville (Vincennes,Indiana). It is interesting to speculate as to who was caring forCatherine during the times when Charles Stanislaus was away on militaryduty. Was her natural mother caring for her?
Fontenay Dequindre (Charles Stanislaus) is variously recorded in landrecords circa 1790 as being a Lieutenant in the British IndianDepartment, and a United Empire Loyalist. The Dequindres were sometimesreferred to as French Tories. His land holdings are shown at differenttimes as being in Malden Township, Essex County and Dover Township (PainCourt) in Kent County. He certainly died after September 1821, (Note:Jack Peltier states that according to Fontenay's will, he died on March1, 1833 in Dover Township) since at that time he was witness to aMemorial regarding the sale of land by himself to George Jacob and isreported to have been buried at St-Peters parish. However, there is norecord of his burial at that place -- perhaps a service was held at thechurch and he was buried elsewhere. There are reported to be familyburying grounds in the local area.
Charles married Marie-Catherine Chene-dit-Labutte on November 18, 1780,In Assumption Church, five years after Catherine's birth. He would havebeen about 34 years old. Had his Indian spouse died prior or had heabandoned her? Were they ever married? Did he go back to her after thedeath of his wife Marie-Catherine?
Charles Stanislaus and Marie-Catherine had three children.Marie-Catherine died in March 1787, before the baptism (1791) andmarriage (1795) of Catherine. Catherine would have been about 12 years ofage at the time of Marie-Catherine's death. Her half-brother Charles Jr.would have been about 6 years old and her half-sisters Marie-Catherineabout 4 and Pélagie about2. It is interesting to speculate as to whatrole she may have played, if any, in the rasing of her half-siblings.Charles Stanislaus would have been about 41 at the time of his wife'sdeath but there is no record of his having remarried.
Catherine appears to have been raised as part of Charles' andMarie-Catherine's family. The "Windsor Border Region - A Survey of theSettlement of Detroit - Made by Order of Major de Peyster the 16th Day ofJune 1782":
"Charles (Fontenay Dequindre) as having a wife (Marie-Catherine) and twochildren under 16, one Male (Charles born in 1781) and one female(Catherine born in 1775). The other two children were born in 1783(Marie-Catherine) and 1785 (Pélagie)."
Catherine is referred to as Catherine Fontenay in the baptism records ofher son Charles Peltier. Her son Gabriel Peltier's godfather was(unknown) Labutte, which further suggests tha Catherine was "recognized"and accepted by the Chene-dit-Labutte family. Her son André Peltier'sgodmother was Pélagie Dequindre, his aunt and his mother's half-sister.This further suggests a connection between Catherine and her half-sistersand her half-brother.
Her daughter Victoire Peltier's godmother was Julie Dequinte/Dequindre,daughter of François Dagneau de Quindre, Sieur de Picanier and another ofCatherine's cousins, which further suggests some acceptance by thatfamily.
Catherine was reported to have been buried at St-Peters, Dover Township, but there is no record of that burial in the parish records. Similarly, there is no record of her husband's burial notwithstanding the fact thatvarious sources state that that was the case. One might speculate thatthere was a family burial plot somewhere where Catherine, as well as herfather, Charles Stanislaus, and her husband, Gabriel Peltier, wereactually buried. There is no record of their burial at other Catholicchurches in the area.
