General Notes: Husband - Arthur Howland
!From 'Ancestry of Annis Spear': 'Arthur Howland was presumably born in Fenny Stanton, Huntington, Eng (A note says there are said to be records in England of his prosecution for nonconformity). He possibly came to New England with his brother Henry, nearly twenty years after their brother John sailed on the Mayflower in 1620. He first appears on the records of Plymouth Colony on 2 Nov 1640 when a grant was made to him of land on North River, fifty acres of upland and some meadow. He was propounded to be a freeman on 1 Mar 1641/2, and in 1643 he was on the list of men able to bear arms in Marshfield. Before 6 Jun1643, when John Walker was called his son-in-law, he married Margaret Walker, a widow (Rec of Plym. Col. II: 57). She must have been his second wife. In 1644, he sued and won a verdict of L6 from Robert Mendum for goods which Mendum's wife had brought for him from England and did not deliver, converting them to her own use. William Paddy of Plymouth, merchant, in behalf of Edmond Freeman of Sandwich, gentleman, deeded to Mr. Arthur Howland three hundred acres in Marshfield formerly granted to Capt. Myles Standish and Mr. John Alden, for the payment of L21 on 20 Jan 1647. In 1650 he sued Walter Baker and won a verdict. Mr. Authur Howland was a member of the grand jury in 1654. In the records of Plymouth Colony he is consistently given the distinction of 'Mr.' Having difficulties with Thomas Doggett over the bounds of the Freeman purchase, where he was then living, Howland petitioned that the court define the bounds on 3 Jul 1654. A surveyor was appointed and the matter did not reach an agreement until 3 Jul 1656. Howland's last public service was performed on 6 Feb 1654/5 when he was foreman of a coroner' jury inquiring into the death of a boy named John Walker, apparently not his stepson of that name. The boy had been a servant of Robert Latham, and the jury decided that he had died from cruelty and hard usage, the evidence being distressing indeed. Arthur Howland was a strong Quaker, (which was then illegal) as were many of his descendants. He was in court on 7 Oct 1651 for not frequenting the public assemblies on the Lord's day. In Dec 1657, Robert Huchin, an itinerant Quaker, held a meeting at Howland's house. Warned that the constable was on his way to break up the gathering and arrest Huchin, Howland managed to effect Huchin's escape. He, himself, was arrested and taken before Mr. John Alden, the magistrate, the next day, having again by stratagem enabled Huchin to escape, and was lodged in jail. On 2 Mar 1657/8, he was fined L9 and bound for good behavior. While in jail, he had composed 'a writing' which he presented to the court and which the magistrates said was full of fractious, seditious, and slanderous passages. Refusing to pay the fines, he was again committed to prison, but on 1 Jun 1658, he admitted that he had 'done evil' and was released. However, he continued his adherence to the new faith. On 19 May 1663, Howland deeded twenty acres to his stepson John Walker, in consideration of L17: 14: 10 paid by his wife Margaret Howland for his use in old England, which money Margaret had given, or probably promised, during her widowhood to her son (Mayflower Desc. XVIII: 87). He was excused from paying rates in 1669, 'in respect to his age and low condition'. The will of Arthur Howland, yeoman, of Marshfield was made 3 Jul 1674 and proved 14 Mar 1675/6. He directed that the 30s which he owed Edward Wanton was to be paid by Timothy Williamson. To his son Arthur, fifty acres of upland and meadow sufficient to keep six head of cattle. To his grandchild Amadiah Smith, L5, and to Amadiah's three brothers L5 to be equally divided among them. To daughters Mary Williamson, Martha Damon, and Elizabeth Low, L10 each. To grandchild Mary Walker, L 10. To grandchild Timothy Williamson, a meadow of five acres in Marshfield, he paying to Edward Wanton 10s a year for three years after he comes to enjoy the said meadow. All the remainder, both real and personal to 'my dear and noble souled wife Margaret Howland.' Executrix: wife Margaret. All of the legacies except the one to his son Arthur were to take effect upon the death of his wife. There is a memorandum that before signing the will the testator revoked the legacy of five acres of meadow to his grandchild Timothy Williamson. The inventory was taken 11 Dec 1675 by Anthony Snow and Josiah Crane and brought to court 7 Mar 1675/6. There had been no appraisal of the house and lands. His books were worth 12s and there were no articles of luxury. Margaret Howland of Marshfield made her will on 19 Jan 1683 and it was proved 5 Mar 1683/4. To her grandson John Walker she left four acres of land. To her three grandsons, sons of her son Arthur, namely Ebenezer, Thomas, and Arthur, her dwelling house, orchard, and field, to be possessed by them at the age of twenty one. Residue to her son Arthur Howland, he to pay the legacies to her children and grandchildren given by her late husband in his last will. Executor: son Arthur. Witnesses: John Rogers , Samuell Sprague. The inventory, taken 25 Jan 1683, amounted to L33: 19: 11. (Plym Co. Prob. 4: (2): 249-251)'

A brother of 1620 Mayflower passenger John Howland, q.v., Arthur Howland arrived in Plymouth much later. The first mention of him in New England records is in Lechford's Notebook, p. 297-99, where he is described in 1640 as a Duxbury planter. Robert S. Wakefield and Robert M. Thomas Prence, that 'Terrour to evill doers,' was not known for his compassion towards Quakers. And few families were more identified with the Quakers than those of Arthur and Henry Howland, the two brothers of Mayflower passenger and erstwhile Assistant, John Howland. As early as 22 Dec 1657, Mr. William Collier and Captain Josias Winslow, having knowledge of a Quaker meeting to take place at Arthur Howland's house in Marshfield, sent Constable John Phillips of Marshfield to interrupt the meeting and arrest a Quaker leader, Robert Huchin. As Phillips testified, he could not apprehend Huchin, being hindered by Howland, who told Phillips 'hee would have either a sword or a gun in the belly of him.' Seventeen-year-old Samuel Hunt testified that Zoeth Howland, son of Henry, had told him he would not go to a church meeting with him 'to hear lyes, and that the devill could teach as good a sermon as the minnisters.' Henry Howland himself was disenfranchised, along with William Newland, on 6 Oct 1659 for being an abettor and entertainer of Quakers.

According to William Howland in The Howlands in America, all the Howlan ds in America can trace their ancestral lineage to the three sons of Hen ry and Margaret (Aires) Howland of Fen Stanton, Huntingdonshire, Englan d: John Howland, who came to this country in the Mayflower in 1620, and h is two brothers, Arthur and Henry Howland, who arrived probably about 1623 -24. Our ancestor is Arthur Howland. He married (place and date unknown) M argaret (-----) Reed, a widow whose parentage we do not know. Arthur was b uried in Marshfield, MA 30 October 1675, and Margaret was buried in Marshf ield, 22 June 1683.
Arthur Howland, the oldest of the three brothers, we believe came to Plymouth with his brother, Henry, where he was a planter, yeoman, freeman, and Quaker. He was of Marshfield, MA by 1643, having been granted fifty acres of land and some meadow there at North River in 1640. He bought an additional three hundred acres of land for 21 pounds sterling, 13 pounds in money and the balance in corn and cattle and spent the rest of his life in Marshfield.
Arthur accepted the doctrines of the Society of Friends and was fined man times for 'Pmiting of a Quaker's meeting in his house.' He refused to pay the fines and was committed to jail. He and his wife were fined ten shillings for absenting themselves from 'publicke worship' in 1658, but 'in respect with his age and low condition' of health, he was acquitted.
Arthur's wife had, by her first marriage, a daughter, Lydia Reed, who marr ied John Walker of Marshfield. Their son, John Walker, Jr. was mentioned in Arthur's will.
Arthur and his wife Margaret (-----) Reed Howland had five children:
Arthur, Jr., m. Elizabeth Prence, daughter of Governor Thomas Prence of Pl ymouth.
Deborah, m. 1 Jan. 1648, John Smith, Jr. of Plymouth.
Mary, m. (1) 6 June 1653, Timothy Williamson; m. (2) 22 Jan. 1679, Robert Sanford.
Martha, m. (1) 15 Jan. 1659, John Damon of Scituate; m. (2) Peter Bacon.
Elizabeth, m. John Low.
1669 Arthur was arrested for neglecting to pay his minister tax.
22 Dec 1657 Called before the Plymouth Court to answer to entertaining a Quaker. Due to his advanced age and low estate, he was excused from paying the fine.
17 Oct 1651 He & his wife were indicted & admonished for not attending church in 1659
1640 Arrived in Duxbury, Mass. as a Planter
30 Oct 1675 Buried in Marshfield, Massachusetts
The Mayflower Planters Cape Cod Series Vol.II
He was a Quaker and his home was a meeting place for them. He was called before court on 1 Jun 1658 of which one of the members was his brother John Howland who came on the Mayflower. His brother was not Quaker.

Arthur was presumably born in Fenstanton. Davis says 'There are said to be records in England of his prosecution for nonconformity.' He may have come to New England with his brother Henry. Boyer says he was at Plymouth Colony as early as 1633 , but he first appears on the records of Plymouth Colony on 2 Nov 1640, when a grant was made to him of land on North river, 50 acres of upland and some meadow. He was propounded to be a freeman on 1 Mar 1641/1642, and in 1643 was on the list of men able to bear arms in Marshfield.
Torrey shows two marriages for Arthur, an unnamed first wife and second, widow Margaret (___) Walker. On 6 Jun 1643, John Walker was called his son -in-law (i.e. stepson), so the second marriage occurred before that date. Sanborn's supplement to Torrey says the marriage occurred 'possibly long before' 6 Jun 1643. Boyer shows only one marriage, to Margaret. He errs in calling her Margaret Reed. This appears based on a confusion that Lydia Reed, who married John Walker, was Margaret's daughter, instead of John Walker being her son. Five children were born to him in Marshfield.
In 1644 he sued and won a verdict for L6 from Robert Mendum for goods which Mendum's wife had brought for him from England and did not deliver, converting them to her own use. William Paddy of Plymouth, merchant, in behalf of Edmond Freeman of Sandwich, gentleman, deeded to Mr. Arthur Howland 300 acres in Marshfield formerly granted to Capt. Myles Standish and Mr. John Alden, for L21 on 20 Jan 1647. Of that sum, L13 was paid in money and the rest in corn and cattle.
In the records of Plymouth Colony he is consistently given the disctinction of 'Mr.'
In 1650 he sued Walter Baker and won a verdict.
Having difficulties with the bounds of the Freeman purchase, where he was then living, Howland petitioned that the court define the bounds on 3 Jul 1654. A surveyor was appointed and the matter did not reach an agreement until 3 Jul 1656.
Arthur was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers). He was in court on 7 Oct 1651, for not frequenting the public assemblies on the Lord's day. Apparently he regularly 'entertayned the forraigne Quakers who were goeing too & frow in some of the townes of the boument, producing great disturbance.'
His last public service was to serve as foreman of a coroner's jury on 6 Feb 1654/1655, inquiring into the death of a boy named John Walker (apparently not his relative). The boy had been a servant of Robert Latham, and the jury decided that he had died from cruelty and hard usage, the evidence being distressing indeed.
On Monday 21 Dec 1657 Robert Huchin, an itinerant Quaker, held a meeting at Howland's house. When the town constable, John Phillips, tried to arrest them, Arthur Howland, then aged about 70, threw Phillips out of his house. Huchin escaped.
Surrendering the next day, Howland appeared in court before Mr. John Alden, the magistrate. He refused to post bond and was imprisoned. While in jail he composed 'a writing' which he presented to the General Court which met 2 Mar 1658. The magistrates claimed the document 'on the pusing therof, appeered to be full of factiouse, seditious, slanderouse passages, to be of dangerouse consequence,' so that he was sentenced by the Court to pay L5 for resisting the constable and to post a surety bond for his future good behavior. He refused to post this bond, and to pay a L4 fine instead, so stayed in jail until 1 Jun 1658, when he admitted that he had 'done evil' and was released, 'considering his age and infeirmities,' by the court, of which his brother John was a member.
He continued his adherence to the new faith. Arthur and his wife were fined 10/- for absenting themselves from worship in 1658, and in 1669 he was prosecuted for not paying his share of the minister's rate.
On 19 May 1663, Howland deeded 20 acres to his step-son John Walker, in consideration of L17:14:10 paid by his wife Margaret Howland for his use in old England, which money Margaret had given, or probably promised, during her widowhood to her son (Mayflower Descendant 18:87)
He was excused from paying rates in 1669, 'in respect to his age and low condition.'
The will of Arthur Howland, yeoman, of Marshfield was made 3 Jul 1674 and proved 7 Mar 1675/1676. He directed that the 30s which he owed Edward Wanton was to be paid by Timothy Williamson. To his son Arthur Howland, 50 acres of upland and meadow sufficient to keep six head of cattle. To grandchild Assadiah Smith L5, and to Amadiah's 3 brothers L5 to be equally divided between them. To daughters Mary Williamson, Martha Damon and Elizabeth Low, L10 each. To grandchild Mary Walker, L10. All the legacies except the one to his son Arthur were to take effect up on the death of his wife. There is a memorandum that before signing the will the testator revoked the legacy of five acres of meadow to his grandchild T imothy Williamson. The inventory was taken 11 Dec 1675 by Anthony Snow and Josiah Crane and brought to court 7 Mar 1675/1676. There had been no appraisal of the house and lands. His books were worth 12s and there were no articles of luxury.

!Initial source: Two family group sheets in the FGRA collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, submitted by Lois Shaffer, 518 Center St., SLC, Utah. Her source for the first marriage was 'B15A1 p103'. This is 'Anc. of Annis Spear' by W. G. Davis, which gives different information than shown on the sheet. The sheet gives his birthdate as abt 1590 but the book shows him fifth in the family of Henry and Ann Howland, making his birthdate abt 1601. The sheet gives his first wife as Mary but the book doesn't give her a name (See her notes). The book also gives a different surname for Margaret, calling her Mrs. Margaret Walker (see her notes). It also gives different marriage dates than shown on the sheet for 2nd marriage of #2 & for 1st marr of #3. A family group sheet sent to me by Janet K. Pease of Moline, Ill., had the same data for Arthur and the same names of his wives as the FGRA sheet, and a still different date for the first marriage of #3. Her sources were: Men of Marshfield, Mass.; Hist of Duxbury, Mass.; Vit rec of Marshfield & Scituate. The baptism and endowment are from the FGRA sheet and are in the 1997 IGI from temple records. The sealing to parents on the FGRA sheet of his parents is 16 May 1958 IFALL. It is in the 1997 IGI There is also one in the IGI with birth 1587, Fen Stanton, Huntingdon, England, son of Henery and Mrs. Henery Howland, sealed 5 Jun 1945 SLAKE, from temple film. LDS proxy sealing of the first marriage is in the 1997 IGI from temple film. The sealing of the 2nd marriage is to Margaret Reed and is from a temple film. There is another, to Mrs Margaret Reed, proxy sealing 17 Nov 1937 LOGAN and one to Margaret RE...D 17 Dec 1945 LOGAN, both from temple films. There are many others with later proxy sealings, some to Margaret Reed and some to Margaret Walker (see notes for her).

!See notes of husband. The FGRA sheet and the one sent by Janet Pease has Mary as the name of the first wife but the article by Annis Speare doesn't give her any name. An article in 'NEHGR' vol. 104 (1950), pg 221, by George E. McCracken, of Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, gives the transcript of the will of Arthur Howland. He mentions an earlier transcription and says the name of the widow was given in it as Mary in three places and then further in the article it says her name was Margaret. This may be where the name of the first wife came from. I have found no other source which gives her name. LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet.

After her husband's death she continued his business:
"October 30, 1678. Lycence is graunted by the Court unto Mary Williamson, whoe keepeth an ordinary at Marshfield, to draw and sell beer, wine, and liquors, soe as shee keep good orders in her house, that soe there be noe just cause of complaint in that respe."

!See notes of father and husband. ' Timothy Williamson and His Descendants' says she married (2) 22 Jan 1679/80, Robert Stanford of Marshfield. 'Ancestry of Annis Spear' says 22 Mar 1679 Robert Sanford. Savage's 'Dictionary of First Settlers of New England' says his name was Stanford and his marriage to widow Mary Williamson was 22 Jan 1680. It may be that the record said first month which, by the old calendar would be March. The LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the family group sheet. The baptism is in the 1997 IGI with no parents, spouse Timothy Williamson, no temple given, the endowment 8 May 1933 LOGAN from temple film. There is a sealing to parents, Arthur Howland and Margaret RE...D, 17 Dec 1945 LOGAN, other ordinances 'pre-1970', from temple film. Another with parents Arthur Howland and Mrs. Arthur Howland with sealing to parents 6 Dec 1952 LOGAN. There are others with later ordinances but all with mother Margaret Reed or Margaret Walker. I am using the sealing to parents Arthur and Mrs. as it has been established that her mother was not Margaret, as explained in notes for her father and for Margaret. From 'Timothy Williamson of Marshfield, Mass.,...': 'On 5 June 1678 Mary Williamson testified, among other witnesses, before Governor Winslow, in regard to the body of a dead child (Plymouth Colony Records, vol. 5 p. 262). After her husband's death she continued his business, as will be seen by the following entry: '30 Oct 1678. Lycence is graunted by the Court unto Mary Williamson, whoe keepeth an ordinary at Marshfield, to draw and sell beer, wine, and liquors, soe as shee keep good orders in her house, that soe there be noe just cause of complaint in that respe'. (Ibid., Court Orders, vol. 5 p. 194...)'

She was not named in his will but he gave to a grandchild Assadiah Smith and to her three brothers. The place of her marriage was not given in any of the sources listed in the notes for her father.
LDS proxy temple ordinances are in the 1997 IGI from temple records except the baptism was with the ordinance record from temple film. It and the endowment were for daughter of Arthur Howland and Margaret Read but the sealing to parents was to Arthur and Mrs. Howland.

He was the fifth. The FGRA sheet and Janet Pease's sheet agree on the date of her second marriage but 'Ancestors of Annis Spear' doesn't give a second marriage.
LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet. The baptism is in the 1997 IGI but the entry had no parents, marriage abt 1656, Scituate, relative Frank E. Caldwell. A brother of 1620 Mayflower passenger John Howland, q.v., Arthur Howland arrived in Plymouth much later.

All the remainder, both real and personal to 'my dear and noble souled wife Margaret Howland.' Executrix: wife Margaret.

!There has been confusion as to Margaret's surname. Several early sources say she was Margaret Read (Reed, Reid) widow, and that her daughter Lydia married John Walker. There is a marriage in vital records of Marshfield, V. 1 pg 1, of John Walker and Lydia Reed 20 Oct 1654. However, Plymouth Colony Records V. 2 pg 57 contains a 1643 record which names John Walker, 'son-in-law of Arthur Howland' and a 1653 deed from Plymouth Colony Deeds V. 2 Pt. 2 pg 123 in which Arthur gives property to Margaret's son, John Walker ('Mayflower Desc.' V. 18 pg 87). Perhaps the confusion comes from the thought that, since John Walker is called 'son-in-law of Arthur Howland', it was because he had married his step-daughter. However, since he was called son-in-law in 1643, he was not yet married to Lydia. Also, at that time in history, the 'in-law' designation was used in the case of step children and step parent relationships as well as in the case in which it is now used. Arthur's will gives to his wife's grandchild, Mary Walker. Her will (1683) gives to a grandson, John Walker, and to three grandsons, sons of her son Arthur Howland and residue to her son Arthur, who was made executor (Plymouth Probates V. 2 pg 249). This looks like evidence that Arthur, Jr., was her son instead of her stepson. Her will is in Plymouth County Probates, 4:(2): 249-251. The 1997 IGI has a Margarett Walker, born abt 1592, of Marshfield, LDS proxy baptism 1 Dec 1993 LVEGA, proxy endowment 16 Dec 1993 LVEGA. Also a Mrs. Margaret Reed, born abt 1591, of Marshfield, spouse Arthur Howland, proxy baptism 7 Dec 1943, endowment 18 Jan 1944 SLAKE. There is a Mrs. Margaret Reed Howland, abt 1654, Marshfield, Mass, in proxy endowments of 10 Jun 1898 SLAKE, baptism 13 Apr 1898. done by Jane W. Smith, rel. in law, at inst. of William H. Walker

General Notes: Husband - Henry Howland
Henry Howland and his two brothers, John and Arthur, were the first Howlands in America. All three were in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, members of the band of Puritans who then removed to Holland due to religious intolerance. Brother John Howland was the first to arrive aboard the Mayflower in 1620. When Henry (and Arthur) arrived is not known, but it was likely in the period 1631-32, as Henry Howland was admitted freeman of Plymouth colony before January 1632/33. In 1636, he removed to the Duxbury section of the colony where he served in various positions, including Duxbury highway surveyor. His Quaker activities resulted in fines and censureship. "On 22 December 1657 Henry Howland, for entertaining Quaker meetings at his house, was summoned to appear at the next court. On 2 March 1657, 58, he was fined 10s. for entertaining a meeting at his house contrary to the order of the court...." On 7 June 1659, "Henry Howland of Duxburrow" as a Quaker "or manifest encourager of such" appears on a list to lose freemanship and is ordered to appear in August to be convicted and censured. At court on 6 October 1659, Henry Howland was disenfranchised for being an "abettor and entertainer of Quakers." The claim that Henry Howland's wife was Mary Newland is unsupported. The will of Henry Howland:

!Initial source: Family group sheet in the FGRA collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, submitted by Mabel S. Cordon, Ashton, Idaho. Her sources: New Eng Hist and Gen Reg Vol C1V; Boston, Mass; Preston Ancestry by Belle Preston. A source was added in handwriting 'REL 974 W2be p 65, 87', and at the bottom of the sheet, also in handwriting, 'Preston Bassett Anc.' by Mary Preston (929.273 B294p) and 'Eng. Anc. and Homes of Pilgrims' (Ref 974 W2be) pg 65, 87.
This sheet has the birthplace of the father as Essex, Eng., the death at Fen Stanto, Hunts, Eng. It has the sequence of the children as Arthur, John, Margaret, Humphrey, George, Simon, Hannah and Henry, all born Essex, England, except John at Scrooby, Notts, and Henry at Scrooby, Essex.
A family group sheet by Janet K. Pease, Moline, Ill., had the same children with the same births except John born London and Henry born Scrooby, Notts. She added a death date for George and for Simon. (See notes for the children.) Her sources: Hist. of Duxbury, Mass.; Duxbury Vit rec; Marshfield Vit rec; Howland Quarterly.
'Ancestors of Annis Spear', by William G. Davis said they were all 'presumably born at Fenny Stanton' and listed John first, born abt 1593, then George, Margaret, Humphrey, Arthur, Simon and Henry. No Hannah was listed.
Some information put out by the 'Society of the Descendants of Pilgrim John Howland of the Ship Mayflower' (I neglected to note where I obtained it) lists them Arthur, John, Margaret, Humphrey, George, Simon, and Henry, with no births given for any except Simon. No Hannah was llisted. (See notes of the children for other information given and for a suggestion about Hannah.)
The will of Humphrey Howland gave bequests to 'my nephew Simon Howland ... and to his sister Hannah...'. It may be that this was mistakenly thought to refer to Humphrey's sister but it clearly calls her sister of his nephew. They could possibly be children of his brother Simon who may have been dead by 1646 when the will was made.
LDS Ancestral File has another wife for Henry - Alice Aires. (See below for doubt of this.) Also has parents John (son of John Howland and Ann Greenway) and Emma Revell.
LDS proxy baptism and endowment are from the FGRA sheet.
There is no further biography given for him in 'Ancestors of Annis Spear' but some information put out by the 'Society of the Descendants of Pilgrim John Howland of the Ship Mayflower' (I neglected to note where I obtained it) has, in a paragraph under 'Howlands in England': 'When Franklyn Howland published his 'Howland Genealogy' in 1885 it was known that a Humphrey Howland of London, draper, left a will in 1646 which mentioned his three brothers, Arthur, John, and Henry of New England. Further research did not identify their parents until 1937 when McClure Meredith Howland of New York discovered in the Draper's Records of London, mention that Humphrey Howland was the son of Henry
Howland of Fen Stanton, Huntingdonshire, England. Thus we know that John Howland's father was Henry Howland. From more recent research by Sir Anthony Wagner of the College of Arms what follows is all we found out about this family. We do not know the line back any further than John Howland's father. In Colonel Francis R. Stoddard's book 'Truth About the Pilgrims' (1952) he mentions Leon C. Hill's discovery of a marriage at Holy Trinity in Ely, Cambridgeshire, of a Henry Howland to Alice Aires on 26 April 1600. Among their children was a John, bapt. 16 Jan 1602, buried as John Howlett, 29 July 1603 and a Henry, born 7 Nov 1612. Sir Anthony is of the opinion that this is actually a Howlett family and not connected with the Henry Howland family of Fen Stanton.'
This information was not dated except there is a report of activity done in 1960 which makes it written after that, how long after is not clear.

John Howland was a Mayflower pilgrim, born about 1592 in Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire, England. His parents were Henry and Margaret Howland. He died at over 80 years of age, the last survivor of the Mayflower. He is buried on Burial Hill in Plymouth, MA. He was married at Plymouth in about 1624-1625 to Elizabeth Tilley, also a Mayflower passenger. Later, John's brothers Henry, Jr and Arthur Howland arrived and settled at Plymouth.
"JOHN HOWLAND,1 came in the Mayflower, 1650, as servant of Gov. Carver. Until the discovery of Gov. Bradford's manuscript history of Plymouth Colony, it was supposed he married Elizabeth, dau. of Gov. Carver; but he m. soon after their arrival. Elizabeth, only daughter of John Tilley and wife; all passengers in the Mayflower, her parents dying the first winter. He was signer of the Mayflower Compact, Nov. 21, 1620; being then 28 years of age."
"Bradford relates a brief sketch of an accident to him during the voyage saying; "In sundrie of these storms the winds were so feirce. & ye seas so high, as they could not heare a knote of saile, but were forced to hull, for diverce days togither. And in one of them, as they thus lay at hull, in a mighty storme, a lusty yonge man (called John Howland) coming upon some occasion above ye grattings, was, with a seele of ye shipe throwne into (ye) sea; but it pleased God yet he caught hold of ye top-saile halliards, which hung over board, & rane out at length; yet he held his hould (though he was sundrie fadomes under water) till he was hald up by ye same rope to ye brime of ye water, and then with a boat hooke & other means got into ye shipe againe. & his life saved; and though he was something ill with it, yet he lived many years after, and became a profitable member both in church and common wealthe." He lived at Rocky Nook, Plymouth; an early freeman, and prominent in the affairs of the Colony; assessor 1633; juror, 1636; selectman, 1666; deputy at various times from 1652 to 1670; and served on important committees; assistant to the governor 1633-5. In 1634 he managed a trading post on the Kennebec river for the colony; called Cushmoc, probably at or near Augusta, Maine; but does not appear to have resided there. He was member of Gov. Bradford's Council, which in 1635 was composed of; Mr. Thomas Prince. Mr. Edward Winslow. Mr. John Alden, Mr. Stephen Hopkins, Capt. Myles Standish, Mr. William Collier and Mr. John Howland He and his brothers Arthur and Henry, who came over to Plymouth together later, were mentioned in the will of one Humphrey Howland, draper, of London, Eng., dated May 28, 1646." (From The Hamlin Family, pp.89-90)

See notes of father. The FGRA sheet, the sheet from Janet Pease and 'Ancestors of Annis Spear' all had the same data for him except Janet's sheet said he was born in London. 'Anc. of Annis Spear' had the same birth year but showed him first child. It said both he and his wife were passengers on the Mayflower. The Society paper shows him second child and says 'yeoman, passenger on Mayflower to Plymouth, 1620, died at Plymouth Colony, 23 Feb. 1672 'over eighty'. He is mentioned in the will of his brother, Humphrey, 1646.'
An entry in the 2000 LDS IGI says the marriage date was 16 Aug 1624, of Plymouth, Plymouth, Mass. LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet except sealing of his marriage is from the LDS IGI.

General Notes: Husband - Timothy Williamson , K.P.W
From 'Timothy Williamson of Marshfield, Mass., and His Desc.' by Grace Williamson Edes of Cambridge, Mass. appearing in 'New Eng Hist and Gen Reg' Jan 1927 pg 73: 'An agreeable fiction still exists among sundry of Timothy Williamson's descendants that he was identical with one 'Master Williamson' mentioned in 'Mourt's Relation.' A pamphlet in support of this theory was printed by Mr. E. E. Williamson of Hyde Park, Mass. The carefully weighed conclusions of Judge Williamson of Belfast and the irrefutable facts given by Timothy Williamson about himself in his deposition of 1668 have finally demolished the legend. 'Having no knowledge as to the English home of this Williamson family, the writer cannot vouch for their right to the coat of arms used by her branch, a dragon, with the motto 'Constare in Sententia'. The claim of the family to it lies in the fact of its adoption by Judge Williamson, whose knowledge of heraldry and meticulous accuracy would have precluded his use of it unless he had been convinced that the family had a right to bear arms. 'Timothy Williamson, of Marshfield,Mass., born, probably in England, about 1621, was killed in King Philip's War, in July or Aug 1676. ... The first certain information which we have about (his early life) is contained in a deposition before John Alden, Assistant, in 1668, wherein he, 'Timothy Williamson, aged 47 years or thereabout testifyeth' that he came 'to Marshfield about 26 years ago in the suite of Reverend Edward Bulkeley of Woodhill (now Odell) Bedfordshire England.' This would show that he first appeared in Marshfield about 1642, but whence he came has not been ascertained. The parish registers of Woodhill [Odell] contain no references to anyone named Williamson, and this patronymic is so frequently encountered throughout Great Britain as to render further search for Timothy's ancestry hopeless without some clue. On 24 Jun 1643 his name is given among the freemen of Marshfield, (Plymouth Colony Records, vol. 8 p. 201) and on 24 Jun 1649 Luke Lillie, at a town meeting held 'at Robert Wattermanes acknoledged to have sould to Tymothie Williamson all his upland formely graunted to him by the freemen of this Township & Also the meddow granted to him yt lieth with that pt graunted to John King & Thomas Chillingeworth for and in consideration of ye sum -----. At the same time William Hales sold to Timothy Williamson all his upland meadow formerly granted him by the freemen of this township in consideration of ----.' (Marshfield Town Records.) At the meeting of the Court at Plymouth on 6 Feb 1654 the signature of Timothy Williamson, who had served on the jury, is given as 'Timothy Williams. His mark.' (Plymouth Colony records, vol. 2 p. 72.) It seems singular that he should have been unable to write his name, as the inventory of his estate shows him to have owned books, a fact from which one would infer that he was not illiterate. On 8 Jun 1655 Timothy Williamson was appointed surveyor of highways for Marshfield, (Ibid.,vol. 3, p. 79.) and 3 Jun 1656 he was further appointed constable, and also stood propounded to take up his freedom and was admitted. (Ibid., vol. 3 pp. 100, 101.) He was sworn at the Court of 3 Jun 1657. (Ibid., vol 3 pg 117.) The Marshfield records under date of 18 May 1657, contain the following entry: 'Att The sayd Townes meeting The Inhabitants Then p'sent have concluded and agreed that The meeting house of The Towne shall be builded & set up uppon The land of Timothy Williamson neare The Training place And the sayd Timothy Williamson and Joseph Rose which is now Tenant upon the sayd lands are willing To consent Thereto.' 'In Aug 1658 Timothy Williamson was 'impannelled and sworne to site upon the corpes of John Phillips Junr,' and his wife Mary Williamson also affirmed that the death of John Phillips was caused by lightening. (Ibid., vol. 3 p. 148.) At the Court Meeting of 4 May 1658 Timothy Williamson, with Mr. Kanelme Winslow and Anthony Snow, was appointed to lay out a 'p'cell of meddow et cetera.' (Ibid., vol 3, p. 134.) In Jun 1659, at the Marshfield town meeting, he was made one of the pounders or poundkeepers. (Marshfield Town Records) He was again called upon to serve on the jury at the Court Meeting of 5 Mar 1660. (Plymouth Colony Records, vol. 3, p. 208.) 'Another document relating to Timothy Williamson reads as follows: 'Marshfield 20 May 1663 (or 1665) at the town meeting, Timothy Williamson having formerly granted to the town a small parcel of ground to set the meeting house upon, and a pound to pound cattle, as also for a training place which is now used accordingly, and the bounds of sd land that he gave to the town doth by wayward (sic) along the training place, and so to run of the south side of the after corner of the meeting house, and to form the after corner of the meeting house, square to the east way of the North side, and so to the westward corner of this training place; and the town have granted to Timothy ten acres of ground to a former grant of thirty acre, which lyes on the farr side of the South River in lieu of his grant of his to the town. At the sd town meeting the inhabitants have appointed Lieutenant White (Peregrine) and William Foord Survaiours to lay out the tract of land formerly and laterly granted to Timothy Williamson, which is forty acres with that which is now granted. A true Copy Attest, Isaac Winslow.' It was probably on account of the proximity of his dwelling to the meeting house that Timothy Williamson received the office of caretaker, as the following entry in the town records of Marshfield shows: 'Marshfield ye 8th Nov 1665. Att the sayd Townes Meeting they have appointed Timothy Williamson To make ye fire & keep ye meeting house clean for the following year & to have thirty shill: in ye towne rate & that the sayd Timothy shall pay his Rate out of ye sayd Summe when ye year is expired.' 'At the Court held at Plymouth on 5 Mar 1666 Timothy williamson 'acknowledgeth to owe unto our Sou. Lord the King the sume of 25.00.00.' (Plymouth Colony Recores, vol. 4, p. 141.) On 25 Oct 1668 Captain Nathaniel Thomas complained against Timothy Williamson and Mr. Samuel Arnold, both of Marshfield, in an action on the case for trespasss to the damage of two hundred pounds, 'for entering into & detaining forcibly a p'sell of land lying on the easterly syde of Greensharbour Freshett, neare the bridge that leadeth over the said freshett from the said Captain Thomas his land, which is comonly called and knowne by the name of the minnestres lott land, and the said captain Nathaniel Thomas being lawfully seized thereof.' (Ibid., vol. 7, p. 150) Timothy Williamson's name is given in the list of freemen of 29 Mar 1670, and at the Court of 4 Mar 1673/4 'Libertie is graunted by the Court unto Timothy Williamson to keep an ordinary att Marshfeild for the entertainment of strangers for lodging, victualing, and drawing and selling of beer.' He was again surveyor of highways 3 June 1673. (Marshfield Town Records, p. 115) 'On the outbreak of trouble with the Indians, which culminated in King Philip's War, masters of garrisons were appointed in Marshfield in 1676, 'and Mr Nath. Thomas and Timothy Williamson are to deliver the ammunition to the respective masters of garrisons.' (History of Marshfield, by Lysander S. Richards, vol. 1, p. 54.) And thus, when the call came to the men of Marshfield on 20 June 1676 to bear arms against the hostile red men, Timothy Williamson executed his will and made ready to go. It is not known on what day he was killed, but presumably he fell on the last day of July or on one of the first days of August, perhaps in one of the skirmishes at Bridgewater. He was buried 6 Aug 1676, in what is now called the Cedar Grove Cemetery at Marshfield, but the exact spot is unknown. 'His will, offered for probate 2 Nov 1676, and other records in regard to his estate read as follows (Published in Plymouth Colony Records, Wills, vol. 3, part 2, pp. 20, 21...): 'This writing Certifyeth To whom it may Concerne that I Timothy Williamson, Senr being called by Gods Providence to serve in the warr against the enimie; and that not knowing whether I may Returne againe declare that it is my will and Testament that my beloved wife Injoy whatever is mine; both houses lands and Cattle att her proper dispose whiles shee lives and that it be by her equally devided amongst them Children at her decease; onely the 40 acres of upland given mee by the Towne; on the North Syde of the South River, I bequeath to my son Timothy; and alsoe will that for a yeer or two if hee change his estate and be not better provided; hee hauve one of the Roomes of my house to live in, the whole propriety Remaining his mothers for the bringing up of our Children. (There follows an inventory of his estate, '... exhibited to the Court held att Plymouth the 4th of November 1676 on the oath of Mary Williamson, widdow; Anthony Snow, John Carver, Josiah Snow. 'An additional record in regard to the etate of Timothy Williamson is the following: 'Plymouth County Court of Quarter Sessions. 17 Sep 1690. !Sources: A family group sheet compiled by Dorothy D. Hall, former family genealogist (now deceased) listed sources: 'Marshfield Vit. Rec.' (974.48/M3 V2s) and in Mayflower Desc. Vol 2 p41-42; 'Anc. lines of Jennie Cowen (Hawkins) Robinson', (929.273 H314f); 'New Eng Hist and Gen Reg', Vol. 81 (1927) pg 78, an article by Grace Williamson Edes, 'Timothy Williamson and Descendants', Vol 91 p371, article by Donald Lines Jacobus: 'Charles Waste & Deborah Williamson', and Vol 113, p157, 'Desc of Chas Waste & Deborah Williamson' by C.G. Inman; 'Hist of Marshfield' by L. S. Richards (974.48/M3 H2r) pg 50-51; 'Memorials of Marshfield' (974.48/M3 D2t) pg 77; Savages 'Gen. Dict'. Vol 4 pg 573. The sheet named only five daughters but a note said that there were probably two more, from settlement of father's estate. The article in 'NEHGR' vol. 81 lists two unnamed daughters, saying 'included 17 Sept. 1690, in the settlement of Timothy Williamson's estate, among the unnamed seven sisters, daughters of the deceased, who were to have certain provision from his sons, but never again alluded to.' The account of the settlement of his son, Timothy, Jr., given in the 'NEHGR' article also mentions seven sisters but doesn't name them. Birthdates of only five are in Marshfield records. An article, 'Ezra Perry of Sandwich, Mass.', by Lydia B Brownson and Maclean W. Mc Lean, found in 'New Eng Hist & Gen Reg', Vol. 115 pg 94, says John Perry, son of Ezra, married about 1683, Elizabeth, daughter of Timothy and Mary (Howland) Williamson, born abt 1661, died 23 Apr 1727 in her 67th year. A note at the bottom of the page said 'A separate article is being prepared in which her identity will be discussed. Another article in 'NEHGR', Vol. 126 pg 279, same authors, (probably the article alluded to) shows what they called 'putitive evidence', mentioning the division of the estate of Timothy, Jr., which mentioned seven sisters, similarity in names of children, etc. (see notes for the daughter, Elizabeth) LDS proxy temple ordinances for Timothy are from the family group sheet. They are not in the 1997 IGI. There is a Timothy Williamson, chr 20 Dec 1618, Fulbeck, Lincoln, Eng., son of George, extracted from Bishop's Transcript, film 436301, LDS proxy baptism 23 Apr, endowment 9 July, sealing to parents 29 Jul, all 1976 WASHI. Another has his marriage, no spouse, relative Edmund Homer, proxy baptism 6 Jul 1926 ALBER from a temple film. Another has the marriage date, but Lockport, Pennsylvania, spouse Mary Howland, the same proxy baptism, no temple, endowment 22 Mar 1933 SLAKE, sealing to parents 'pre-1970' from a temple film. Others with ordinance dates since 1990. The proxy sealing of the marriage is in the IGI from a form submission. There is a family sketch in 'Memorials of Marshfield' on pg 75 which suggests that there was a 'Master Williamson' who in 1621, with Capt. Standish and Edward Winslow, made a journey to make a treaty with Massasoit. It says he is called Master George, meaning, probably, Master George Williamson, and suggests that Timothy was perhaps his son. This is doubted by Savage in his 'Genealogical Dictionary....' who says there is no indication that there was anyone named Williamson in the new colony at that time, that the Mayflower had not yet returned to England and there had been no other arrival at the time. He also says the author 'borrowed' the Christian name of George from later generations. (I am wondering if it could have been the record said 'Master William's son', referring to William Brewster, or even 'Master William's serv.'. Brewster had three servants who came with him on the Mayflower. MDR)
General Notes: Wife - Mary Howland

5 p. 194...)'
Research Notes: Child - Mary Williamson
!See notes of father. The family group sheet says husband 'George' Slawson, TIB says 'Josiah'. Vital records of Marshfield says Josiah. The article in 'NEHGR' vol. 81 gave her birth and marriage and said 'all efforts to trace the couple after their marriage have been fruitless.'
LDS proxy temple ordinances are in the 1997 IGI from temple records.
General Notes: Child - Timothy Williamson
!See notes of father. NEHGR article gave his birthdate, said he died 'unmarried in 1682; bur. 18 Sep 1682. The inventory of his estate was taken 22 Sep 1682, and showed property amounting to L51. 12s. 4d. It was presented to the Court at Plymouth by Arthur Howland of Marshfield, and the following distribution was ordered: 'This Court doth order the Estate of Timothy Williamson late deceased that it shall be divided between ye said Williamson brethren and sisters according to ye order of Court in that Case made and provided, That is to say ye Eldest brother of ye said Timothy Williamsone shall have a double portion of ye said estate and all ye rest of his brethren and sisters to have a single part or portion, and that the said Eldest brother shall have all the lands of the said Williamson if he desier it, when he shall come of age rendring ye overplus of ye prise of ye said lands to his brethren and sisters if any should hapen toward ye making up of there parts or portions as avobe said.' (Plymouth Colony Records, Wills, vol. 4, part 2, pg 4, and 'The Williamson and Cobb Families', pg 11., footnote.)'
Research Notes: Child - Joanna Williamson
!See notes of father. The 'NEHGR' article gave her birth, probably from Marshfield records, and said she was living 17 Sep 1690. This is the date of distribution of the estate of her brother, Timothy. The article gave nothing about a marriage. LDS proxy temple ordinances are in the 1997 IGI from temple records.

!See notes of father. She was not on the family group sheet but there was a note at the bottom which said '2 dau. unnamed might have been born between 1661 and 1670 (seven daughters, unnamed, in settlement of father's estate).' The article in NEHGR, vol. 81 lists these two unnamed daughters as 10th and 11th children. An article in NEHGR vol. 115, pg 94, gives her as the wife of John Perry, son of Ezra. Another article in NEHGR vol. 126, pg 279, 'Elizabeth (?Williamson) Perry, Wife of John Perry of Sandwich, Mass.', by Lydia B. Brownson and MacLean W. McLean, gives the evidence, calling it 'putative', and explains that it is not conclusive proof. It is mostly based on the use of the same names in both families and interconnection of Howland and Perry family marriages. LDS proxy temple ordinances are in the 1997 IGI from temple records.

The inventory of the real and personal estate of Capt. Caleb Williamson, taken 14 Feb. 1738/9, showed property appraised at £1154, 11s. 5d., ofwhich £980 was in buildings and lands.

!See notes of father. Birth, marriage and death are in the article in 'NEHGR' vol 81. It says Arthur Howland was appointed his guardian 31 Oct 1682 so he must have been under 21 at that time. It says 'The inscription on his headstone stating that he was 87 years old at the time of death in 1738, thus implying that he was born about 1651, must, therefore, be an error.' It gives a reference for the guardianship record, 'Plymouth Colony Records, vol. 6.' LDS proxy temple ordinances are in the 1997 IGI from temple records.
Research Notes: Child - Experience Williamson
The article in 'NEHGR' vol. 81 gave marriage and death but no birth. It didn't cite proof that she was the daughter of Timothy but the will of her husband shows they named children Timothy and Mary. LDS proxy temple ordinances are in the 1997 IGI from temple records.
Research Notes: Child - Nathan Williamson
!See notes of father. The article in vol. 81 of 'NEHGR' gave no birth nor marriage date, said he died about 1718, administration on his estate being granted on 5 June of that year. It gave the name of his wife saying she was daughter of Samuel Sprague and Sarah Chillingworth but gave no source of this information. LDS proxy temple ordinances are in the 1997 IGI from temple records.
Research Notes: Child - Abigail Williamson
!See notes of father. The vol 81 'NEHGR' article didn't give any marriage for her and said she was living 17 Sep 1690. This referred to distribution of her father's estate which directed distribution to seven daughters but did not name them. The marriage was on the family group sheet of her parents compiled by Mrs. Hall.
LDS proxy temple ordinances are in the 1997 IGI from temple records.

Will proved 25 Oct 1765
General Notes: Child - George Williamson
!From 'New Eng Gen & Hist Reg' V. 81: 'George Williamson frequently changed his dwelling place in pursuit of his trade (carpenter). From 1700 to 1713 he lived in Duxbury and Rochester, Mass., buying in the former place the house of John Mitchell and living also at Tarkiln Hill Pond (Winsor's History of Duxbury).' (Proprietors records says assigned 8th lot) 'From Rochester he moved to Harwich, Mass., and in 1715 and 1716 the church records show him to have been at Truro, Mass., whence he was discharged 21 Apr 1717 to Middleborough, Mass. He was at Wellfleet, Mass., in 1724, and on 22 June of that year was one of the members of the precinct meeting for dismissing Josiah Oakes from the meeting, a task apparently attended with some difficulty, as on 19 May of the year following he was appointed to warn the aforesaid Josiah from preaching farther in the meeting house of the North Precinct. (The Mayflower Desc. V. 8 pg 43.) George Williamson was still in Wellfleet in 1728, being elected, 15 Apr., as agent for the precinct to advise with the President and Fellows of Harvard College in regard to a preacher. His will was proved 25 Oct 1765, his real estate and buildings being left to his eldest son (Plymouth Probate Records).'

Ewell, Jr. His source: 'New Eng Gen & Hist Reg' V 81 p72-90 (GS 974 B2ne). Additions and corrections from 'Mayflower Descendant' V. 8 pg 243, V. 9 pg 56, V. 10 pg 184, V. 12 pg 60, V. 13 pg 250, 252, V. 14 pg 224, V. 15 pg 232, V. 16 pg 144. LDS proxy temple ordinances are in the IGI from temple records. His birth, marriage and death are given in the 'NEHGR' article. On pg 86 it says his will was proved 25 Oct 1765 but, in the account of his son, George, it says he (the son) died 24 Jan 1764, administration of his estate granted to his widow 25 Apr 1764, 'right of dower in real estate and buildings awarded to his mother, Mary Williamson, as son George had inherited the homestead.' This is confusing as the date of granting administration of the son's estate is before the proving of the father's will. Further searching in the Probate records of Plymouth Co. showed that further action was taken on the son's estate 17 and 28 Oct 1765, (550711 pg 269, 289). The father's will was not found in this search. Perhaps the father's will had not yet been proven when the son died and it was presented to clear up the confusion of ownership. Or it may be that action on the son's administration was confused with that of the father. The marriage is in Marshfield records, page 349, which says he was married in Eastham.
