George Henry Martin, Sr
MILLINOCKET -- George Henry Martin, Sr., 78, died on Thursday, January 1, 2004.
He was the son of Henry J. and May (Willette) Martin.
Born in Millinocket, George was a member of the Stearns High School Class of 1943.
He served in the United States Navy, serving in northern Ireland during World War II.
He was later employed by Great Northern Paper Company for 44 years, working as a
day supervisor in the finishing department, retiring in 1985.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the American Legion;
and was a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Millinocket.
He coached Little League baseball for many years, and led the Millinocket Little League All Stars to the
Maine State Championship in 1966. George was a Red Sox and Patriots fan, who also enjoyed
playing cards and entertaining his grandchildren.
He wintered in Florida with his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Geraldine Ann, as well as by their children: Nancy and her husband,
John Jamo, Marilyn Martin Brown, George H. Martin, Jr., Stephen B. Martin, Paul M. Martin,
Jayne Martin-Potvin and her companion, William Lewis, Mary Kathryn and her husband, Steve Marter,
all of Millinocket, Paul of Tampa, Florida, and Bettie Hicks Martin of Bingham; 11 grandchildren: John Jamo,
Nichole Jamo, Jillian Jamo, Scott Cole, Tony Brown, Jr., Martin Brown, Michael Martin, Heather Potvin York,
Nicholas Potvin, Rachael Potvin, Kirsten and Marissa Marter; 11 great-grandchildren: Micah, Ethan, Noah, Seth,
John, and Isaac Brown, Lillian and Sophia Dow, Annabelle Pelletier, Lauren Belle Jamo, and Ayanna York;
great-step-grandsons: Aaron Civiello and Nathan Pelletier; many nephews and nieces, friends, and in-laws.
He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Marlene (Martin) Hallett; his mother- and father-in-law,
Clarence B. and Lillian (Gaskin) Mackin; brothers-in-law, Clarence B. Mackin and Carroll J. Mackin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2004, at St. Martin of Tours
Catholic Church in Millinocket.
Friends and relatives are invited to call between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Friday,
January 2, at R.L. Bouchard Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack Street, in Millinocket.

EAST MILLINOCKET - Edith M. Tibbitts, 91, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at a Millinocket hospital. She was born Oct. 29, 1917, in East Millinocket, the daughter of Martin G. and Frances Jane (McKnight) Stratton. Edith was a lifelong resident of East Millinocket and worked for the town as town clerk and tax collector for 19 years, retiring in 1982. While serving in those capacities, she was known for her dedication, even issuing hunting, fishing and marriage licenses from her house on weekends and evenings. For 45 years she was organist and pianist at First Congregational Church of East Millinocket, where she played for many weddings, funerals, special services and Sunday morning worship services. Edith enjoyed rug hooking, knitting, crocheting and sewing. She had an outgoing personality and will long be remembered for her sense of humor. Edith was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and was loved by all in return, and will be sorely missed. She is survived by five children, twin boys, Donald C. Tibbitts of East Millinocket and his special friend, Anita Moscone, of Millinocket and Dean G. Tibbitts and his wife, Barbara, of Topsham, Carolyn A. Tibbitts of East Millinocket, Patricia M. Willey and her husband, Karl, of Palm Bay, Fla., and Helen J. Kelly of East Millinocket and special friend, Richard P. Jones, of Palmyra; a brother, Ralph E. Stratton of Winn; a sister, Jean D. Segee and her husband, Doug, of East Millinocket; nine grandchildren, Terri, Donald, Catherine, Liza, Dina, Scott, Robin, Robert Jr. and Rachel; 10 great-grandchildren, Crystal, Michaela, Megan, Jason, Jeff, Sarah, Griffin, Caleb, Angus and Robert III; four great-great-grandchildren, Madyson, Mallory, Gage and Hailey; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Edith will also be missed by a lifelong best friend, Marion Bartlett of Florida. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her former husband and the father of her children, Carrick A. Tibbitts; a daughter-in-law, Linda Tibbitts; a son-in-law, Donald Kelly; and two brothers, Reginald "Buck" Stratton and Francis "Ted" Stratton.

EAST MILLINOCKET – Francis G. Stratton, 85, passed away at a local health care facility, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004. He was born June 3, 1919, the son of Martin and Jane (McKnight) Stratton. He was a World War II veteran having served in the Navy from 1943-1946 aboard the USS St. Paul. Being very proud of his service to his country, "Ted" helped commission the ship and was a plank owner. He was also in the National Guard until 1951. Ted was a life member of the DAV, VFW, and he was a member of the American Legion Post No. 13 in East Millinocket. He was a member of the Lion's Club who put on many events in the town East Millinocket. Ted was also a member of the Sno Rovers Snowmobile Club. At one time, he was a certified projectionist for the local movie theatre in East Millinocket. Ted was a member of the International Electrical Workers Union as well as the Papermakers Union. Above all else, he was a woodsmen and he loved the outdoors. One of his favorite pastimes was going to his hunting camp, thus resulting in his nickname, "Mud brook Moses". He is survived by his six children, Kenneth G. Stratton and his wife, Mary, of Winthrop, Richard E. Stratton and his wife, Joey, of East Millinocket, Francis D. "Frank" Stratton, and Barbara Bower of East Millinocket, Stephen J. Stratton and his wife, Sheila, of Farmingdale, Jane A. St. John and her husband, Stanley, of Millinocket, Ann F. McVey and her husband, John, of Brewer; 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; two sisters, Edith Tibbits and Jean Segee; one brother, Ralph Stratton. Ted had a special relationship with his grandson, Greg Caruso. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Ruby A. Stratton; his brother, Reginald (Buck); and his baby brother, Kenneth. His famous words were, "Keep Smiling." He will be dearly missed by all of his family and friends. To honor Ted's request, there will be no funeral services.

General Notes: Husband - George Ployer
George Ployer was born in Cardross in February of 1938 to John Allen Ployer and Marion (Birt); he was the second of four children. When George was four his family moved to the property where he currently lives on Martinvale Road, his father had a mixed farm there which he then took over.
He married Mary Blue in August of 1962 and raised four children with her Glen, Gail, Scott and Janice. He remembers his eldest son was quite fond of his grandfather John Allen Ployer and would spend a lot of time at the grandfather's house or traveling with him.
George is a great supporter of his local church; he was the treasurer of St. Andrew's Presbyterian for forty years and took offerings for nearly fifty years. He is also an elder in his church for forty years, an elder being essentially the body of the church that runs things. He recently gave up his position of treasurer, it is now being done by his neighbor Sandra Myers. He credits the Ladies Guild for raising a lot of money for the church through fundraisers, lobster suppers, potlucks and they are good to work together to get things done and they provided the baked goods for after funerals.
He recalls when they used to have a party line and his Uncle George wanted to see who was listening so he told someone that a minister was coming to visit. They needed to get the hall ready for him, so when they got to the hall on the night in question it was full of people and the fire was going. They couldn't claim they weren't eavesdropping and when they were told the minister wasn't coming and it was just a test to see who was listening.
He has three grandchildren Nadine and John who are Glens (deceased) and Eve who is Gail's. His daughter Gail is a teacher, and his son Scott is an Electrical Engineer in San Francisco. His other daughter Janice works at DVA in Summerside but has traveled/worked in Japan, Scotland, and New Zealand and has run the Boston Marathon and is a quite avid athlete.
George's wife Mary passed away and he later married Mabel Lauren Maclean of North Lake in November of 2001, they live together on the homestead with a seventeen year old cat for company.

East Millinocket - William A. MacLeod, 89, died July 15, 1998 at a
Lincoln healthcare center. He was born Dec. 10 1908, in Howland, the son
of Angus and Elizabeth (MacNevin) MacLeod. He graduated from Schenck High
School, Class of 1927 and attended Maine School of Commerce (Husson College).
He was a World War II Army veteran. He retired from Great Northern Paper
Co. as a papermaker in 1971. Bill was a member of Paperworkers Local
No. 152 and was financial secretary for the union for more than 38 years.
Bill was a member of the Eastmill Credit Union Credit Committee for more
than 35 years. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Hazel (Michaud)
MacLeod of East Millinocket; one daughter, mrs Donald (Vicki) Small of
Madison; a grandson, Gregory Lyons; and a granddaughter, Debra Scott, both
of Bangor; four great-grandchildren, Angela Bouchard, Christopher Scott,
Bryan and Matthew Lyons; one brother, Roderick and his wife, Cynthia MacLeod
of East Millinocket; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at
R.L.Bouchard Funeral home, 17 Western Ave., East Millinocket, 2-4 and
6-8 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the
funeral home. Burial will be in East Millinocket Cemetary. Friends and
relatives are invited to St. Peter’s Parich Center for a reception and
luncheon following the graveside services. If friends wish, memorial
contributions may be made to the Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field St.,
Millinocket 04462.

General Notes: Husband - Donald Macqueen
Donald MacQueen and his wife Christina MacLeod, daughter of Malcolm MacLeod and Effie MacDonald of the Glengarry MacDonald's emigrated on the "Polly" in 1803. They settled first at MacAulay's Wharf, Glashvin Road known today as Pinette. Donald MacQueen died after a few years and was buried in the Old French Cemetery beside the Lord Selkirk Provincial Park. About 1815 the widow MacQueen and her young family moved to Orwell where they purchased a one hundred acre farm on the north bank of the river. The farm was later divided between her two sons Angus and John Angus. Donald MacQueen had two brothers who remained in Skye namely John and Angus.
