General Notes: Wife - Norma Shaw
Silver Springs, Florida and Millinocket - Norma A. Foote, 85, went to be with the Lord Saturday, January 12, 2008 from an Ocala, Florida health care facility. She was born February 28, 1922 in West Sebois, the daughter of William and Edna (Bragg) Shaw. Norma was very active in the Millinocket Baptist Church for many years, teaching Sunday School, working with the choir and many charitable events with the church. She was also involved with many skits at the church with Roger Boynton, Ozzy Pound, Jr. Shanks, and Dot Kelly. Norma made hand puppets, teddy bears, and animals for neighborhood children, as well as flying her handmade kites with them. She loved her little nature walks in the surrounding woods near her home, where she would gather berries and wild flowers. Norma will be dearly missed by all of her family. She is survived by a son, Thomas Foote and his wife Catherine; a daughter in law, Linda Foote of Hyde Park, Massachusetts; a brother, Richard Shaw and his wife Mary Ellen, all of Millinocket; two sisters, Jean Peters and her husband Vaughn of Mattawamkeag, and Avis Keene of Bar Harbor; four grandchildren, Diana Nicholson and her husband Rick of East Millinocket, Karen Birmingham and her husband Kirk of Millinocket, Scott Foote of Oxnard, California, and Wendy Lactara and her husband Ted of Southwick, MA; three great grandchildren, Melanie, Amanda, and Andrea; five great great grandchildren, Natalie, Lillian, Emily, Andrew, and Michael; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Norma was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Lewis C. Foote in 1994; a son, Allen Foote in 2007, and siblings Hattie Lovejoy, Christine Pratt, Mary Pratt, and Francis Shaw.

NEW HARTFORD
Early Settlement -- Soil -- Products -- Inhabitants -- Manufactories and business of Former Years.
The town of New Hartford was one of the first settled towns in the county, this town and Whitestown were settled about the same time in 1787 or 1788. Judge Sanger bought a tract of land in what was then a wilderness and about the same time the Messrs. Williams, three families of Kelloggs, two of Risleys, two of Olmsteads, Hurlburt, Butler, Shepard, Beach, Kilborn, and Higby, with a few other, commenced the settlement of the town, and being the best of land it was soon taken up by actual settlers from the New England States, men who were brought up to the habits of industry, on the rocky soil of the Eastern States, could not fail in making rapid progress towards compotency and wealth, with such a soil as New Hartford is celebrated for. The town is well watered by the Saquoit and other streams, giving it many fine mill privileges that are well improved.
It is peculiarly adapted to English grain of all kinds, and a fine town for fruit, with a noble breed of cattle as any town in the county except Vernon.
The inhabitants retain the character of the first settlers in maintaining the institutions of Religion and learning, diffusing happiness to families and neighborhood, making the best of society in every district.
The village of New Hartford is pleasantly located four miles south-west of Utica, on what was formerly the great Western Turnpike and before the building of the Erie Canal and great Western Rail Road was the great thoroughfare for all the travel west.
The town contains at this time, 4847 inhabitants, is six miles square, and has in its bounds a larger number of manufacturies than any town in the county --the principal ones are Burr Stone Mills, Cotton Capron or Utica Cotton Mills, Howell's two factories New Hartford Mill, Washington, two factories belonging to F. Hollister, of Utica, a splendid stone building, Rodgers & Spencer's large machine shop and foundary Chadwick & Son's Eagle Mills Cotton Factory, Clark's Cotton Mills on the Oriskany Creek, one of the best built factories in the country, making in the whole ten in number besides a large number of other mechanics located in its borders doing a heavy amount of business.
In 1816 New Hartford village (before the Erie Canal was built) was doing a large merchantile business the Messrs. Wilbur & Stanton, and a few other merchants transacted as heavy a business as any merchants in the county, and the village was in a thriving and growing condition. The building of the Canal diverted trade and travel so that for a number of years the village lost its appearance of thrift then it formerly enjoyed; but, within a few years the manufacturing about it and its excellent farming land has given it the appearance of renewed vigor and beauty. It has some splendid farm houses and country seats showing wealth and taste in their construction.

1831 preceded his family to Cassville, WI grant co. where he joined his friend, Major Glendower Price, from Philadelphia, who had arried not too long before. Their wives were sisters. Both in 1832 participated in the Black Hawk War in1834. "Mrs Anna Forbes with two children, one two years old (Harriet P. B 1832) and the other "your humble servent " (Josephine C. b: 1834), arrived in Cassville and were greeted by Mrs. Harriet (Hardin or Riley) Price, her sister and wife of Glendower Price. These children were born in Philadelphia. 1842-45 resided in Lancaster, WI grant co. "james Otis was removed as postmaster (was unsympathetic to the tyler administration) and Benjamin F. Forbes, from cassville,was appointed in his place. Living in the home vacated by Mr. Scott Postmaster at Lancaster, WI. Grant co. 1845 kept a hotel on the site of the Callie residence. The house caught fire and was totally destroyed by a defective flue inthe attic. This was lancaster's first fire. Little exept clothing was saved.After the fire he moved accross the Mississippi River to Jacksonville, IA clayton co. (Possibly returned to Cassville to keep a hotel and then returned to Jacksonville, at that time named changed to Garnavillo)" (7) Located in Jacksonville, before Sept 1845 , as a hotel keeper, possibly bough farmland in 1848 in garnavillo. Many grand balls and parties were held at his hotel. 1849, he followed the "gold rush" to Marysville, California Butte co. the metropolis of the gold hills. he took a string of pack mules, laden with mining supplies and followed the trail to the hills, prospecting as he went. Drifting into Butte co. where he found a few scatered miners, casting his lot with them, gold was foundright in the little creek (south Fork of the Feather River) that ran through his camp. This started a mad rush for the little camp of Forbes. Soon opened upa general merchandise store. Sent to Washington D.C. for a post office charter, thus he founded Forbestown,CA in Butte co. sept 1 1850. Made a strike, $30,000. he turned his general store over to his brother Jared J. Forbes who later joined him, and returned to Garnavillo, IA clayton co. about 1852 where he continued to run his hotel, now named Garnavillo Hotel. Purchased Garnavillo General store, (also called the Forbes store) about 1852, account book shows accounts 1852-1859. Bult the Upper Buck Creek saw mill 15 may 1852. gradually acquired more land and at the time he sold this 28 mar 1857 the property totaled 300 acres. He d. 20 aug 1857, garnavillo, IA clayton co. having had the largest Masonic funeral in the memory of the state.

Captain james Forbes: according to the information recieved he is the same James Forbes who w as captain in the Royal scotland army who fought under Montrose, 1645 captured at the battle of Philipbaugh near Selkirk, Scotland, imprisoned in the tower of london, banished to america , reaching CT 1654. May have settled first in winsor, CT Hartford co. at Aberdeenshire 1658 . On 7 jun 1658 purchased 20 acres near the mouth of the hockanum river, sold this 23 nov 16 63. A resident at the GOODWIN farm in Hartford, CT by 5 aug 1659, purchased, 11 mar 166 0 a tract of land, 15 1/2 rods wide extending from "ye greate river to ye bounds," and 3 mile slong. residence was built in an indian cornfield on meadow bank a short distance north of l and in Hartford, CT 1661 and was a prominent citizen of Hartford colony.

Clark, in Cassville, WI, in 1837. It was one of the first boats of that class to make the trip up the mississippi. 1850 census, aged 66,"grocery keeper", resided in dist. 24 , grant co. WI in the home o son-in-law , charles L. lagrave.aged 35, and wife ann e. aged 28 . jared's real estate valued at $250. died 1860 Cassville, WI Grant Co.
