General Notes: Child - Amos Munroe
Amos came to Spencer, Massachusetts in 1768 and bought a farm there. He married the daughter of Jacob and Ann (Capen) Prouty.
He served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War.
"Genealogy of the Lexington Munroes" (by R. S. Munroe) gives Anna's birth as ca. 1758 and death date as 8 Oct 1835. A handwritten genealogy dated 10 Sep 1867 and apparently written by Joshua Munroe, Jr., Anna's grandson, says she died in 1825 age 77. That would put her birth date as about 1748. Both references say she married in 1768. Therefore, the latter birth and death date seem more likely since they would place her at age 20 when she married, while the former set would place her at about age 10.

General Notes: Child - Jonathan Munroe
Jonathan moved to Spencer, Massachusetts about 1768, but he left Spencer and went to Plainfield, Massachusetts before 1780. His second wife, Sally Coggswell was from Paxton.
At a legal meeting of the inhabitants of the District of Plainfield, in the home of Mr. Simon Burroughs, on Monday, 25 Jul 1785 Mr. Munroe was chosen one of the Surveyors of Highways. The next eight meetings were held at the home of Jonathan Munroe, whose house then stood where that of the late Lewis Shaw stood. In 1964, his home was still standing and in fine condition and owned by Mr. Edward Bloom. Jonathan bought numerous pieces of land in Plainfield. The records of these purchases are in the Registry of Deeds at Northampton, Massachusetts.
Jonathan returned to Spencer with all his eight children except the two oldest. He purchased a farm in North Spencer and lived in a long low house on the east side of the road. His son, Jonathan was born in this house there they lived for many years.
His daughter, Clarissa, was born to Jonathan and Sally Coggswell before he married her. This child was brought up in his family. She was always known to the family as Aunt Kent and was a very estimable woman.
Jonathan was a great hunter and he used to go to Kentucky where he hunted with Daniel Boone.

Hepzibah's husband, Oliver saw active service in the Revolution.
Hepzibah and her husband moved to Hillsborough, New Hampshire in about 1778, as his name appears on the tax list for 1779. They settled in "Concord End".
One reference says Hepzibah was the daughter of Joseph Munroe [2870].

all info on this family from correspondence w/Helen Carpenter Burns 1990
Among the first settlers of Rehoboth were 58 people from Weymouth who drew
lots in the division of lands on June 31, 1644: William Carpenter's namein
that division stands as number 10. At the first meeting of theproprietors of
Rehoboth, held at Weymouth in 1643/4 to organize the settlement of theland
which had been originally pruchased from teh Wampanoags in 1641 by men ofthe
Plymouth Colony, the group chose nine "townsmen" to run their affairs. The
company at Weymouth, led by the Rev. Samuel Newman, did not adhere toeither
the Massachusetts Bay Colony or the Plymouth Colony at first, preferringto
consider itself an independent settlement. . . . however in 1644 the
majority decided to join Plymouth Colony, soon after an election oftownsmen
was held. . .
Tradition, as well as the description given in his will, indicates the
WIlliam Carpenter residence was located in the "ring" directly east ofthe
church. In 1645 William Carpenter was elected a Rehoboth representativeto the
governmental body at Plymouth, also chosen to look after the interest ofthe
town and named as one of those empowered to hear and decide ongtrievances in
regard to the division of land by lots. In 1647 and 1655 he was chosenas one
of the directors of the town . . .
His vocation was given on the shipping list as that of carpenter, but one
wonders if he had not at one time planned to enter the ministry. Hislibrary,
mentioned in his will, includes various religious works of the eras aswelll as
Latin classics, Greek and Hebrew grammars, biblical concordances and somelegal
works. These books, plus the fine script in which he wrote the earlyRehoboth
records, indicate he had a far better education than most of the earlyNew
England settlers.
All of William Carpenter's children are mentioned in his will, which isdated
the 10th day of the 10th month, 1658. (A copy of the will is on filewith
Plymouth Old Colony records, --wills, Vol 2, pages 80-83, in Plymouth,MA)
William died at Rehoboth Feb 7, 1658/59 and his will was proved April 21,1659.
His widow, Abigail, died at Rehoboth February 22, 1687/88. The maidenname
of William's wife, Abigail, has never been confirmed by documentation. It is
generally believed, however, that she was the daughter of WIlliam Bennettof
Sway in Hampshire. William Bennett's will, made in 1630 and provenshortly
after his Aug 20, 1638 burial, names as executors Ralph and WilliamCarpenter,
but only Ralph served as an executor.
"Wm Carpenter of Rehoboth, MAS came to America on the ship BEVIS whichsalied
in May of 1638 from Southampton, Hampshire, England with 61 passengersaboard.
Accompanying him was his father William of Wherwell, Hampshire, age 62,wife
Abigail 32y and 4 ch under 10y. They were also accompanied by a servant,
Thomas BANSHOTT 14y. Complete passenger list is given in Charles E.Banks'
THE PLANTERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH, 1620-1640, (Baltimore MD 1961) pp198-200.
It is believed the elder William left his son and family at Weymouth, MAand
returned to England on the BEVIS. The younger WM was admitted a freemanof Wey
mouth on 13 MAy 1640 and was named Constable in 1641. He served as a
Representative of Weymouth to the General Court of Plymouth, MA BayColony in
1641 and 43." From Raymond G. Carpenter's update PART 4 THE EARLYREHOBOTH, MA
BRANCH...THE FAMILY OF HEROES.
General Notes: Child - John Carpenter
John Carpenter: The eldest child of Captain William Carpenter of
Rehoboth was
2 CONT JOHN, born about 1628. He came from England aboard the Bevis
with his father
2 CONT and was with his family at Weymouth and in Rehoboth, where he
spent his
2 CONT childhood.
2 CONT Sometime before 1646, and when he was about 17 years old, John
Carpenter
2 CONT headed for Connecticut and traveled around that state working at
the trade of
2 CONT carpenter. About 1655 he married Hannah Smith, daughter of
Magistrate WIlliam
2 CONT Smith of Jamaica, Long Island. Their eldest son, John Carpenter
Jr., was born
2 CONT in Connecticut in the mid 1650's. (A great deal of research was
conducted to
2 CONT prove that the Carpenter Memorial, listing his wife's name as
Hannah Hope was
2 CONT incorrect, and should be Hannah Smith, daughter of William Smith
of Whitford,
2 CONT Devon, wher ein England the 1632 baptism of Hannah Smith was
located).
2 CONT The History of Queens County, NY indicates John Carpenterw was
a freeholder
2 CONT at Long Island as early as 1660. REcords also indicaqte he owned
land at
2 CONT neighboring Hempstead prior to his Feb 14 1663/4 purchase
(Jamaica Records, V
2 CONT 1, p 21) of land in East Neck between the property of Mr. Haulet
and Henry
2 CONT Townsend. Jamaica Records reveal his other neighbors were Joseph
Thurston,
2 CONT Richard Harker, Joseph Smith, Thomas Smith, Roger Linas, and John
Rohdes.
2 CONT According to records cited in Seversmith's "Colonial Families of
Long Island',
2 CONT John Carpenter also bough the dwelling house and barn lot of John
Strickland of
2 CONT Jamaica Nov 8 1665 and the homestead there served as the family
residence. The
2 CONT same source also notes that, along with his brother-in-law,
Nehemiah smith, he
2 CONT was overseer of the poor.
2 CONT In 1664, an English fleet appeared off the fort at New
Amsterdam. After
2 CONT considering the situation, the Duth surrendered without a fight.
In 1672,
2 CONT Holland and England were again at war and in 1673 a strond Duth
fleet appeared
2 CONT off New York. After a short battle at Fort James (old Fort
Amsterdam), the
2 CONT English surrendered. Fort James was located at the foot of the
present Broad
2 CONT Street.
2 CONT John Carpenter was captain of the JAmaica Fusileers in 1673 and
in July had
2 CONT been ordered with his company to defend Fort James in lower
Manhattan against
2 CONT the fleet of the Prince of Orange. Captain Manning, the
commandant of Fort
2 CONT James, surrendered after a short lived battle and for this act,
was afterwards
2 CONT sentenced to have his sword broken over his head. Because of
their short lived
2 CONT efforts, the families represented by our ancestor at the defense
of New York in
2 CONT 1673 became known as the "first defenders of the city of New
York."
2 CONT According to the HISTORY OF QUEENS COUNTY Captain John
Carpenter was one
2 CONT of the patentees of the town of Jamaica under the "Dongan Patent"
of 1680. In
2 CONT 1683, he was taxed an assessment of 186 poinds and was the second
richest man
2 CONT in Jamaica. The richest man in Jamaica aqt this time was Abraham
Smith . ."
2 CONT At a town meeting held Jan 20, 1683, John Carpenter was named a
delegate to
2 CONT meet with representatives of neighboring towns to choose a
treasurer for the
2 CONT county. On April 2, 1686, he was, along with Nehemiah Smith and
Daniel Denton,
2 CONT a commissioner for Jamaica. Captain John Carpenter was named a
deputy to
2 CONT conduct some Jamaica business in New York on March 14, 1689/90 (p
143, Jamaica
2 CONT Records).
2 CONT For more than three centures, members of the Carpenter family
have been
2 CONT closely identified with the First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica,
which lays
2 CONT claim to being the oldest church in America of that faith . . .
During the
2 CONT Revolutionary War, the Brittish used the church as a military
prison; later, it
2 CONT was sold for $200 and used for a courthouse. In 1813, the old
stone structure
2 CONT was torn down.
2 CONT Captain John Carpenter, Sr, was like his father, William of
Rehoboth, a man
2 CONT of superior judgement and education who did much to assist in
building up his
2 CONT community. He died at Jamiaca May 23, 1695. His will of Nov 19,
1695
2 CONT (Jamaica, New York WIlls, liber A, p 98) names his wife, Hannah;
his sons John,
2 CONT Hope, Samuel and William; his daughter Ruth, a grandson, Solomon,
and
2 CONT granddaughters Abigail Rhodes and Hannah Rhodes.
2 CONT In 1704, Hannah, hiw widow, sold her rights to houses and lands
left by her
2 CONT late husband, Captain John Carpenter, Sr., to her son, William
Carpenter.

all info on this family from correspondence with Helen Carpenter Burns
John Carpenter: The eldest child of Captain William Carpenter of Rehobothwas
JOHN, born about 1628. He came from England aboard the Bevis with hisfather
and was with his family at Weymouth and in Rehoboth, where he spent his
childhood.
Sometime before 1646, and when he was about 17 years old, John Carpenter
headed for Connecticut and traveled around that state working at thetrade of
carpenter. About 1655 he married Hannah Smith, daughter of MagistrateWIlliam
Smith of Jamaica, Long Island. Their eldest son, John Carpenter Jr., wasborn
in Connecticut in the mid 1650's. (A great deal of research wasconducted to
prove that the Carpenter Memorial, listing his wife's name as Hannah Hopewas
incorrect, and should be Hannah Smith, daughter of William Smith ofWhitford,
Devon, wher ein England the 1632 baptism of Hannah Smith was located).
The History of Queens County, NY indicates John Carpenterw was afreeholder
at Long Island as early as 1660. REcords also indicaqte he owned land at
neighboring Hempstead prior to his Feb 14 1663/4 purchase (JamaicaRecords, V
1, p 21) of land in East Neck between the property of Mr. Haulet andHenry
Townsend. Jamaica Records reveal his other neighbors were JosephThurston,
Richard Harker, Joseph Smith, Thomas Smith, Roger Linas, and John Rohdes.
According to records cited in Seversmith's "Colonial Families of LongIsland',
John Carpenter also bough the dwelling house and barn lot of JohnStrickland of
Jamaica Nov 8 1665 and the homestead there served as the familyresidence. The
same source also notes that, along with his brother-in-law, Nehemiahsmith, he
was overseer of the poor.
In 1664, an English fleet appeared off the fort at New Amsterdam. After
considering the situation, the Duth surrendered without a fight. In1672,
Holland and England were again at war and in 1673 a strond Duth fleetappeared
off New York. After a short battle at Fort James (old Fort Amsterdam),the
English surrendered. Fort James was located at the foot of the presentBroad
Street.
John Carpenter was captain of the JAmaica Fusileers in 1673 and in Julyhad
been ordered with his company to defend Fort James in lower Manhattanagainst
the fleet of the Prince of Orange. Captain Manning, the commandant ofFort
James, surrendered after a short lived battle and for this act, wasafterwards
sentenced to have his sword broken over his head. Because of their shortlived
efforts, the families represented by our ancestor at the defense of NewYork in
1673 became known as the "first defenders of the city of New York."
According to the HISTORY OF QUEENS COUNTY Captain John Carpenter was one
of the patentees of the town of Jamaica under the "Dongan Patent" of1680. In
1683, he was taxed an assessment of 186 poinds and was the second richestman
in Jamaica. The richest man in Jamaica aqt this time was Abraham Smith .."
At a town meeting held Jan 20, 1683, John Carpenter was named a delegateto
meet with representatives of neighboring towns to choose a treasurer forthe
county. On April 2, 1686, he was, along with Nehemiah Smith and DanielDenton,

Was elected town clearn of Rehoboth on May 13, 1668, and with theexception of
one year, 1693, held that office until his death. He was sent to theGeneral
Court of Plymouth as a deputy in 1668, was chosen Deacon of his church inthe

ability, accurate in all his business transactions, and a reliablecouncillor
in the Colony. He was noted for his superior penmanship, as evidenced byall
his writings. His house stood on the left-hand side of the road leadingfrom
the East Providence meeting house to Rehoboth, on a rise of land some50-60
rods from the crossing of the "ten mile river", and was one of the most
pleasant sites for a house in the locality." From Raymond G. Carpentersupdate

THOMAS BENTON GRAY. Pike County contains many attractive homes, not only in the thriving towns but in the rural districts, and a traveler will see many evidences of prosperity on the farms whose cultivation is the chief factor in the financial welfare of the citizens. One of these fine estates belongs to the gentleman above named and comprises two hundred and thirty-nine acres on sections 27, 28, 33 and 34, New Salem Township. The farm is mostly improved land and is supplied with a complete line of adequate and substantial outbuildings, together with two residences. The dwelling occupied by our subject and his family was erected in 1886, at a cost of over $3,000, and is the best-built and most beautiful farmhouse in the township. A view of this elegant home appears on another page.
Mr. Gray is the son of Thomas Gray, formerly a prominent citizen of Pike County, who came here in 1846 and bore an active part in the upbuilding of New Salem Township. He was born near Zanesville, Ohio, in 1812, and was a son of another Thomas Gray, whose birth had taken place in Virginia, September 5, 1784. Grandfather Gray was a farmer and to the same occupation the father of our subject gave his attention during a part of his life, at other times working at his trade of a blacksmith. Grandfather Gray, after living in Ohio some years came to Illinois, dying here October 16, 1870, his mortal remains being deposited in Gray's Cemetery in Salem Township.
The mother of our subject bore the maiden name of Catherine Bennett and was born in Maine, January 12, 1798. Her parents were James and Catherine Bennett, the former of whom accompanied by his family, removed from Maine to Clermont County, Ohio, in 1800. There he died in 1839, and his wife was buried by his side in 1847. The parents of our subject were married in the Buckeye State and made their home in the village of Withamsville, on the pike between Cincinnati and Bethel, where the husband worked at his trade. In 1846 they came to this State, selecting Pike County as their future home. They established themselves on section 34, Salem Township, on a farm of two hundred acres, about thirty-five of which was under cultivation. Mr. Gray was in limited circumstances and paid for his land with some cash, a long rifle valued at $50, a greyhound worth $20 and a span of horses.
The land was covered with brush and young timber and bore a log and frame house, to which Mr. Gray added as soon as possible, also building a new barn. He built a blacksmith shop, worked at his trade, and in the intervals cleared, broke and cultivated considerable of his land and also planted a six-acre orchard. He took a very active interest in local school affairs, donated land for a schoolhouse and served as a School Director and School Trustee for many years. He was also Supervisor of New Salem Township for several years and was elected Treasurer of Pike County for one term. He took considerable interest in politics, frequently serving as a delegate to conventions and voting the Democratic ticket. He and his wife belonged to the Universalist Church, in which he held official positions. Nothing afforded Mr. Gray more enjoyment than to shoulder his gun in the fall and spend several weeks in the woods in pursuit of game. He brought down many bears, deer, panthers and other animals. He was a remarkably fine shot with the rifle at a moving mark. He killed over thirty deer running, more than half being shot through the heart.
The parental family included five children, the third-born being the subject of this biographical notice. James F. Marion is now living in Kansas; Ann, widow of John Bell, resides in Salem, Pike County; John T. makes his home in Missouri. A daughter, Alabama Carolina, formerly the wife of David Read, died in 1862. The mother passed away May 9, 1869, and the father in September, 1876. They were buried side by side in the cemetery which is called after the family and which contains the graves of many relatives. The ground is kept very neatly and its finest monumental adornment is that erected by our subject over the graves of his revered parents.
Thomas B. Gray opened his eyes to the light in Clermont County, Ohio, July 13, 1837. He was named in honor of Senator Thomas H. Benton, of Missouri, who was a personal friend of his father. He received his education in a little log schoolhouse in the township in which he now lives, having been nine years of age when the family came here. Reared on a farm, he was early inured to all the hardships of grubbing, clearing land, making rails and breaking cattle and mules. Many a time he and his brother J. F. M. broke prairie with a twenty-four inch plow and ten yoke of oxen, crashing through hazel brush that was eight feet high.
Our subject remained with his parents until his marriage, which was solemnized January 4, 1863, when he established himself in a home of his own. He has been remarkably successful in accumulating worldly goods, and still carries on his farm which is devoted to mixed crops and upon which enough stock is raised to consume all the grain not needed for family purposes. He raises Shropshire sheep, Short-horn cattle, Poland-China hogs, English-shire and draft horses and mules, and is probably as well posted regarding the merits of the different species and breeds as any man in the State.
The lady who has charge of the home affairs on the Gray estate bore the maiden name of Martha Tedrow. She was born July 10, 1844, in the township in which she still lives, received a common school education and acquired the skill in household arts and the fine character which fitted her for the place which she has had to fill at home and in society. She is the mother of thirteen children, eight of whom are now living, namely: Alfred R., Iva E., Edgar F., Ora M., Ralph B., Everett E., Carrie M., and Vera Pearl. The two oldest children attended the Pittsfield High School two years, then entered the Jacksonville Business College, of which Alfred is a graduate. Edgar and Ora are now attending the Griggsville High School and the younger members of the family still study in the district school. During the past year they did not miss a day in the entire eight months during which the school was in session.
The grandfather of Mrs. Gray, John Davis, was born in Virginia and died in 1828 near New Trenton, Ind. Grandmother Phoebe Davis was afterward married to William Wilson. She was born in Butler County, Ohio, in 1803, and died in Hamilton County in 1872. She was a member of the Methodist Church fifty-seven years. The parents of Mrs. Gray, Asa and Sarah E. (Davis) Tedrow, were born in Ohio and came thence to this State about 1836, when wild animals were still to be seen here and the country was comparatively undeveloped. They settled on a farm in New Salem Township, Pike County, and the first death within the township was that of their eldest child, Sarah. Mr. Tedrow died May 27, 1852, at the age of thirty-eight years, six months and two days. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church when young and lived and died a devoted Christian. His widow subsequently married Daniel Troy, who breathed his last February 13, 1884, at the age of sixty-eight years, four months and twenty-one days. Mrs. Troy is still living aged seventy-two years, and makes her home with our subject. She has been a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for sixty years. Her first marriage resulted in the birth of six children, those who are now living being Mrs. Mary Bradbury, whose home is in Missouri; Mrs. Gray; Asa, who lives in Brown County; Samuel, who occupies the old homestead. Her second marriage resulted in the birth of Albert and Allie, twins. William, the eldest brother of Mrs. Gray, was a Sergeant in the Thirty-third Illinois Infantry, and was killed in service while battling for the Union.
Mr. Gray is a man of much personal worth, proves an acceptable public servant and is a popular member of society. He has been School Director for years, is now Township Trustee of schools and formerly served as Township Assessor one year and as Collector. He is a member of the Masonic order at Salem, has been Secretary of the lodge, and his father was a member of the same body, and Pittsfield Chapter. Mr. Gray keeps himself well informed regarding political issues, believes in tariff reform and in national affairs affiliates with the Democratic party, although in local elections he votes for the man. He has always been an advocate of temperance and never uses liquor, tobacco nor any form of profanity. He is a member of the Universalist Church.
Throughout the entire community Mrs. Gray is well known as one of the most estimable ladies and as one whose worth is far above that of rubies. Her kindly heart and generous disposition have endeared her to all with whom she comes in contact, while to her husband she has ever been a faithful and capable helpmate and to her children a wise and devoted mother. It is upon the wives and mothers that the prosperity of our country depends and too much cannot be said in praise of her who nobly shared the labors of her husband, braved dangers and overcame obstacles, and now in the prime of life can already see the fruits of her earlier labors.

"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart, p.108, states that he was
called "Will". P.119 states that he was born in the 1860s and married Elsie
M. Bennett. Page 92 lists him on the crew of the stone sloop "Twilight"
under Captain Franklin Curit.
This individual was downloaded from the "Stevens/Mansfield/Southworth/Medieval database owned by Jim Stevens (pittsborojim@gmail.com).
General Notes: Wife - Elsie M. Bennett
"Stone Sloops of Chebeague", chart, p. 96. There is some ambiguity as to
the identity of her husband. The Bennett chart, p.96, says "Edwin F.
Hamilton" on the "son James" chart on p.114. That chart shows an "Edwin"
(RIN10601), but with no wife listed. However - on the "son John" Hamilton
chart on p. 108, there is "Will" Edwin F. Hamilton (RIN 11621). His notes
specifically state that he married Elsie M. Bennett. It seems almost certain
that the Bennett chart simply made reference to the wrong chart and that
"Will" is the correct husband.
This individual was downloaded from the "Stevens/Mansfield/Southworth/Medieval database owned by Jim Stevens (pittsborojim@gmail.com).

EARLY RECORDS OF WALLACE
In a search of Scottish church records we found only one person with the first name of Wallace among the hundreds of Finlaysons. He was born on Nov. 6 and christened Nov. 16, 1683 in the Parish of Abbey (Paisley), County Renfrew, Scotland, attended by his father, James Finlayson. Wallace's mother was not listed for the christening, but another church record shows the marriage of James Finlayson and Margaret Wallace took place on November 14, 1682 in the same Parish. On Dec. 11, 1685 a Margaret Finlayson was also born to James Finlayson. This probably was a sister to Wallace. It appears that Wallace received his mother's surname for his first name and his sister received her mother's first name. It is highly probable that this Wallace Finlayson of Renfrew is the same man that emigrated to America and who's descendents now use the name Fenderson or Fenlason.
The first record of Wallace Finlayson in New England is on the British impost record of June 6, 1712 for the port of Boston. He is listed as follows:
Impost Office, Boston
Vessels Entered in the Month of June, 1712
6 th Jethro Furber ye Sloop Tryall from Fyall
George Alvis & 3 servants
Willis Finderson, Merchant
James Huistin Corurgon
Wallace would have been about 29 years old. He shows up next in the Portsmouth Town Tax Records for the Province rate in 1715 as Capt. Finleson. He is listed in subsequent years as Capt. Walas Ffinlason, Capt. Willis Finlayson, and Capt. Walis Fenleson, last taxed in 1722. He is listed in the North Parish Records of the New Meeting House in Portsmouth as Capt. Walter Ffenlayson in 1717. A copy of his signature as foreman of a jury in Portsmouth shows that he spelled his name Wallace Finlayson.
He married Frances Bennet, daughter of Henry and Francis Burr Bennet of Portsmouth on November 3, 1715 (see Descendants of James Finlayson).
Not much is known about Capt. Wallace Finlayson other than the fact that he was a sea captain. He is mentioned in some genealogical references as a builder of ships in addition to his work at sea. There are no records of land holdings in the Portsmouth area during his lifetime, but he did rent a pew in the New Meeting House for a substantial sum.
That he was active in the coastal trade is attested to by his testimony before the Provincial Council as follows:
Wallace Finlayson, master of the Sloop Success, and John Hooper a marriner, belonging to
said sloop, personally appearing at the Board, voluntarily made oath that on Wed. the 5 th
day of Oct. last, being on a voyage from Barbadoes hither, in ye latitude of twenty and one half
the aforesaid Sloop Success with her cargo and men were taken by a pirate ship, mounted with
about twenty eight guns, commanded by Capt. Roberts (which ship was accompanied by
a sloop) and that Mr. Edward Sherburne, mate of the Sloop Success was forcibly and very
much against his will detained on board the said pirate ship, who openly declared he would be
sooner cutt into pound pieces than joyne with the pirates in their piratical designs; to which
some of the pirates replyed, if he did not forebare such talk they would cutt off his ears; and
further, that Argalus Hunking carpenter of the said sloop, was also detained against his will
aboard the said ship and beaten and abused for refusing to obey ye commands of ye pirates:
and further, the Deponents testify that James Clement a marriner on board the said sloop was
also forcibly and very much against his will detained on board the pirate ship.
Attest, Richard Waldron, Cler.Con.
At a Council held at Portsmouth Nov. 11, 1720

N. H. Provincial Papers, Vol. II, Part I, p.735
It seems probable that Capt. Wallace Finlayson intended to give up the life of a sea captain because he obtained a grant of 80 acres from the Proprietors of Scarboro (Scarborough), Province of Maine, on June 22, 1720. The lot was described as follows:
Beginning at a beach tree marked K. on south side of the road above Phillip's bridge running eighty poles along said road upon NW by W line joining Crocket's land on the east at the aforesaid marked tree and on the W to Job Burnam's land at a tree marked J.B. & W.H. thence running 60 poles on a SW line or however the lot is bounded as by the records of the prop. of Scarboro.
York Co. Registry 22/247
No death record or burial site has been found for Capt. Finlayson and its possible that he died at sea. He probably died before he could fulfill the settlement obligations in Scarboro because his widow Frances was listed by the Proprietors on Sept. 20, 1727 to settle the grant or forfeit. Frances married John Babb in Scarboro on August 25, 1731 when her son Nathaniel, Wallace Finlayson's only surviving son, was about 12 years old.
Widow Frances must have somehow secured the grant because Capt. Henry Sherburne of Portsmouth, NH settled Capt. Wallace Finlayson's estate as executor and principle creditor, and he listed the grant as Finlayson's major asset, and proceeded, between 1738 and 1741, to maneuver the grant into the hands of Nathaniel Finlayson. He accomplished this by having Nathaniel deed him the land on Dec. 24, 1741 for the sum of 160 pounds. He then deeded the land back to Nathaniel on Dec. 30, 1741 for the sum of 201 pounds. This settled the estate and secured the land in the hands of Wallace's only surviving son at the age of 22 years. One must speculate that Henry Sherburne, one of the most prominent members of the shipping industry in Portsmouth, must have been much more than a creditor of Wallace Finlayson to endure the many hours of travel on several occasions between Portsmouth and Scarboro to make good Wallace's debts of about 41 pounds, and protect his son in the bargain. Thus started the family roots in what is now the town of Scarborough, Maine.
THE NAME
From the time Wallace Finlayson gave his name to the British Impost inspector his Gaelic pronunciation of his name, rendered Fin-ti-son, was destined to be misspelled by scriveners for three centuries. His grand-children started to use English spellings, mostly Fenderson, by the middle 1700s. Since that time various town, county, state, and federal documents indicate spellings as follows:
Finlayson Fynlayson Findlayson
Fenlayson Finlason Findlerson
Findlison Fintison Finderson
Findisen Fendinson Fendlarson
Fentason Fenleson Fendesen
Fendarson Fendensen Fendenson
Fenderson Fenlason
The origin of the name is Finlayson, which is listed as a Sept of the Clan Farquharson. The ancestral home in Scotland is in the braes of Mar (the head of Aberdeenshire) and adjacent counties. As is the case with most Highland families, the ancient genealogies become difficult to trace amid the claims and counterclaims of rival families and landed gentry. Most Scottish historians subscribe to the constant tradition of the clan as originating from Shaw MacDuff of Rothiemurchus, who it is said to have been appointed hereditary chamberlain of the royal lands of Braemar, about the upper waters of the Dee by King Robert the Bruce. His son, founder of the family, was a Fearchar who lived in the reigns of Robert II and III. From him the clan takes its name of Mac'earchar, or Farquharson. The clan took its name of Finlayson from the grandson of this Fearchar who was known as Finlay the Mor (from Moir, More, because of his great size and strength).
Finlay the Mor was an historic personage, to whom, although their surname was derived from his grandfather, all branches of the Clan Farquharson ascribe the honour of being their founder and common ancestor, and from whom they have their Celtic appellation of Clann or Siol Fhionlaidh. He was killed by an enemy ship's cannon ball while carrying the Royal Banner during the Battle of Pinkie in 1547. His body lies interred in the Church Yard of Inveresk. The place is known as the "Lang Highlandman's Grave". Some of his descendants who took the name Finlayson settled in the lowlands of Scotland, where there are many families by that name today. By virtue of the Lyon Court decree of 1936, the Chiefship of the clan is held by the Farquharsons of Ivercauld.
THE FENDERSON FARM
The original Fenderson farm was probably located on the original land grant given to Wallace, but eventually claimed by his only surviving son, Nathanial. The description of this land grant indicates that the land was just above Phillip's bridge in the Dunstan area.
Nathaniel bought and sold a number of land parcels in the Scarboro area, and later built a large house and barn about 1760-65 just off what is now Route 22. The last Fendersons born on this farm included sixth generation Albion L., Joseph B., Lucey E., Addie, and Lottie Fenderson. The original buildings are now gone, but the family cemetery remains in a wooded knoll east of the old cellar hole.
When reading the Fenderson genealogy, one should be aware of the close ties between the towns of Scarboro (now Scarborough) and Machias, ME, since it was primarily Scarboro people who settled Machias, in the latter half of the eighteenth century. There was considerable movement back and forth, particularly around the time of the Revolutionary War. Following the Revolution, Fendersons were prominent in settling many Maine communities, including Parsonsfield, York and Cumberland County towns, and Washington and Aroostook County towns. By the end of the nineteenth century they had migrated world wide.
This work follows the line of the third generation Nathaniel, who lived out his life on the Fenderson farm in Scarboro. His brother, Wallis, moved to Machias, ME following his service there in the Revolutionary War. Wallis' branch of the family adopted the surname Fenlason.
