AUGUSTA - Robert Long Witham shed this mortal coil and passed on to the undiscovered country Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010. He suffered no pain, and passed away quietly and peacefully at his home, in the presence of his wife of almost 62 years and family. He was born Friday, Feb. 13, 1920, at North Bend, outside of Surry. He was fond of claiming that Friday the 13th was his lucky day. He was the only child of Willis Wilbur Witham and Adelaide Victoria (Carpenter) Witham. At age 3, his family moved from North Bend to live on a farm in East Blue Hill. He attended George Stevens Academy, Blue Hill, until age 16 when he left school to help support his family. At age 17 he joined East Blue Hill Grange and became master at age 18, making him the youngest master ever in that Grange chapter. He remained a lifelong member of the Grange, a total of 73 years. He participated in Youth Conservation Corps at Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, Dennysville, helping conduct surveys of duck and woodcock populations. He later worked as a welding chipper at the South Portland shipyard prior to his entry into the U.S. Army <http://www.legacy.com/legacies/army/?personid=146287099&affiliateID=2905> Air Corps. He was proud to claim the title of "fastest chipper" by removing more feet of weld from a ship deck during his shift than any other worker there. He was stationed in India during the war as a supply sergeant, handling materials and supplies for much of the China-Burma-India Theater of operations. After the war he returned to Maine and entered the Maine Warden Service, moving to Millinocket in 1946. He married Susan Annie Klimas, Feb. 28, 1949, and moved to "The Hathaway Farm" in Medway, on the banks of the East Branch of the Penobscot, where they lived for the next 47 years. He joined the Masons as a member of Nollesemic Lodge, Millinocket, in 1953, and remained a member of the lodge until his death. He served as chaplain of the lodge for several years, and was the director of several Masonic plays presented by Nollesemic lodge members across Maine. He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rites, a Knight Templar in the York Rites as well, and a member of Anah Shrine, Bangor. On May 1, 1990, he was recognized for his contributions to masonry when he was awarded the Simon Greenleaf Medal at the annual meeting of the Grand Lodge of Maine. He left the warden service in 1954, and went to work for Great Northern Paper Co., East Millinocket, as a watchman, and later held positions as a storekeeper at East Millinocket and Millinocket mills until his retirement in 1985. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a registered Maine Guide for many years. He loved to spend time with friends at his hunting camp in Weston, where he was "camp cook." He claimed the title of cook because, as he pointed out to his hunting companions at the camp, "the cook doesn't have to do the dishes." The arrangement worked well for all involved through nearly 40 years of hunting trips at the camp, and many a glass of Crown Royal was shared among friends there after the hunt was over and the chores were done. He is survived by his wife, Susan; his daughter, Barbara Ann Witham of Lamoine; his son, Robert L. Witham Jr. and his wife, Michele, of Augusta; his grandchildren, Melanie Anne (Witham) Mistretta and her husband, Cataldo, of Mendon, Mass., and Jason Willis Witham and his wife, Jeannine, of Warwick, R.I., as well as four great-grandchildren. Interment of his cremated remains will be at Grindstone Road Cemetery, Medway. A family reception and wake will be hosted 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 6, by Frank and Ann Davis at their home on Powersville Road, Medway, to allow friends to say hello and remember his life. A Masonic graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in his name to Healthreach Hospice, care of MaineGeneral Office of Philanthropy, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903. "The workman has laid down his tools and submitted his work. The Great Architect has tested his stone by the plumb, level, and square and found it true to His plan. It has been judged a perfect ashlar, and fit to be included in His heavenly house. His work is complete and he can now rest from his labors."

"Cape Cod Series History and Genealogy of the Mayflower Planters, by Leon Clark Hills (1941) [G 974.401 P 738 h Vol.2 - avail at the Indiana State Lib.] : on page 121, the Carpenter lineage as I have shown it in my genealogy is given.
"ROBERT E. BOWMAN" <75754.3234@COMPUSERVE.COM> posted to soc.genealogy.medieval on 26 Jan 1997: Subject: Carpenter/Southworth
. "My experience with the Cape Cod Series is that it is only a starting point and much of the genealogical information has been updated and corrected, particularly in the Mayflower Society "Silver Books" and their Mayflower Families in Progress and "The Great Migration Begins". My wife has two lines of descent from the Carpenters of Wringfield (Southworth and Morton) who emigrated to Leydon before the "Scrooby Group" and were members of the Ancient Bretheren. Unfortunately I have found no modern confirmation of the supposed ancient lineage of this family. See the "Carpenter " section of the newly published, by the NEHGS, and highly esteemed "Great Migration Begins" by Anderson. He makes reference to and states that the family is best treated by (the famous) Mary Lovering Holman in her "Scott Genealogy" pp 284-5 (I have not seen this). Per Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . . 8th Ed." (9:41), the youngest son. Weis does not feel that the case for Edward being the father of CONSTANT and Thomas is adequately proven. Other research, however has convinced me that the link, although not certain, is extremely likely.
According to the book "Colonial and Revolutionary Lineages in America" Vol. 19, Edward was a silk worker in Leyden, Holland.
____________________
Under the date November 19, 1938, Mrs. Mary J. Sibley, Genealogist, wrote to the Blackburn Grammar School at Blackburn, Lancashire, England. The gist of her letter is as follows: -
Ê
"I have examined the records of the Blackburn Grammar School, by George Alfred Stocks, published in 1909 in the Chetham Society Publication. Stocks does not list the pupils, but in the introduction he states - 'We learn names of the five who fled beyond the seas because of their complicity in the Counter-Reformation.' He does not name them. Will you kindly have someone examine your records prior to 1629 and send me what data you have, especially of Edward Southworth and his brother Thomas Southworth, and also, the two sons of Edward Southworth, Constant and Thomas - if they attended the school."
Ê
"In 1893 a local antiquarian, Mister Joseph Baron of Blackburn, to Mister Horatius W. Southworth, of the Springfield, Massachusetts Southworth, that Edward of Samlesbury went to Leyden, Holland; but did not name his authority. I am trying to find proof of this identity. Every item will be valuable. In 1602 Edward and his brothers, including Thomas, were still in the neighborhood of Samlesbury for they were all listed as foreign burgesses with their father in the Preston (Lancashire) Guild Roll of that year. They were all mentioned by their grandfather, Sir John Southworth, in his will dated September 17, 1593. Sir John died November 3, the same year."
Ê
"In 1622, William and Christopher, brothers of Edward Southworth of Samlesbury, were still on the rolls of the Preston, Lancashire Guild, but Thomas and Edward were omitted, indicating they were dead. William is given at the time of his grandfather's death (1595) as of Holcroft, Lancashire."
Ê
"The first authentic record of Edward Southworth at Leyden, Holland was on November 13, 1610, as a witness at a betrothal, which would suggest that he was then of age, and he married Alice Carpenter at Leyden, May 28, 1613, with his brother, Thomas, as his attendant, the record of which states that Edward was from England."
Ê
"A preserved letter shows that Edward Southworth, previously of Leyden, Holland was living at Heneage House, Duke's Place, Aldgate Ward, London, in 1620. He must have died in 1620, or early 1621 for his nephew stated at the time of his widow's death, in an ode in her honor, that he died young."
Ê
"I mean good Edward Southworth, who not long
Continued in this world the saints among.
With him she lived seven years a wife,
Till death put a period to his life,"
Ê
Alice, his widow, came to Plymouth, Massachusetts on the ship Anne in 1623, and in August that year married Governor William Bradford. Edward's sons, Constant (born 1614) and Thomas (born 1616) remained in England till 1628-9, presumably to be educated. If they were pupils in Blackburn Grammar School the information would be important. Both Sir John Southworth (died 1595) and his eldest son and heir, Thomas Southworth, Esquire were Governors and contributors to the school; therefore entitled to have their sons educated there." [End of letter to Blackburn Grammar School.]
Ê
Since the arms brought to Plymouth by Edward's widow had a sable field and since the Samlesbury Southworths bore the same and were the only Southworths in England who did - and the heir male had used crosses patonce, flory and crosslet, it seems conclusive that Edward of Samlesbury and Edward of Leyden were identical.
Mrs. Mary J. Sibley

News Article:
Calvin Carpenter is Awarded Bronze Star in Pacific
WITH THE AMERICAL DIVISION AT BOUGAINVILLE: Cpl. Calvin E. Carpenter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irving Carpenter, 14 Winslow Avenue, West Somerville, has been awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in direct support of combat operations.
In an engagement with the enemy during the Battle of Guadalcanal, Corporal Carpenter occupied vital observation posts on the frontlines, and while exposed to enemy sniper and mortar fire made reports of enemy movements which contributed to the success of the field artillery firing missions.
Carpenter's artillery outfit, a component of the veteran Americal Division, has been through two successful campaigns in the South Pacific. Since induction into federal service in January 1941, he has been in charge of the wire section of his battery which fought both at Guadalcanal and Bougainville.
Between the Guadalcanal fighting and the combat at Bougainville, Carpenter rested with the Americal Division in the Fiji Islands.
