FOSTER
REUBEN BALL FOSTER, SR.
Reuben Ball, Sr., the son of Asa and Anna (Bartlett) Foster, was born in N
ewry, Oxford, Maine, USA on February 10, 1795. About 1826 he married Sar ah A. (Bartlett), born May 26, 1807, the daughter of Stephen and Dorcas (B arbour) Bartlett who lived north of the Androscoggin River in that pa rt of Bethel, now Hanover, Oxford, Maine, USA. This union would give li fe to eleven children, three boys and eight girls with at least eight pass ing away prior to their 37th birthday.
Reuben purchased the Gideon Powers, Jr. Homestead north of the Androscogg in River, now Hanover, Oxford, Maine, USA located on the Old County Roa d, map location No. 57, about 700 feet easterly from his father-in-Iaw's h omestead. Reuben had more than an average education for that era and thi s, coupled with his above average intellectual capacity and drive, result ed in his becoming a highly successful, large-scale farmer, employing ma ny men to carry on his farming activities. He raised large crops of grai n, especially yellow corn. Another branch of his activities was the raisi ng of livestock. It was said that Reuben did a larger business in this li ne than anyone in the western part of the state. Even with his demanding b usiness schedule, Reuben still found time to officiate as a Justice of t he Peace, when called upon. He also found time to run for town office, ele cted first selectman and treasurer in 1851 and, at the state level of poli tics, he served the House of Representatives in 1860 for one term of one y ear, and again in 1866.
Sarah passed away on September 18, 1854 at the age of 47 and Reuben pass ed away in Hanover, Oxford, Maine, USA on September 9,1875 at the age of 8 0. Both are buried in Lot 17 in the Hanover Cemetery in Hanover, Oxford, M aine, USA along with six of their children.

A Newry Family Who Joined the Latter-Day
Saints in Seeking a Home in the West
by Mary E. Valentine
Patty Bartlett Sessions was the first in her family to be baptized as a me mber of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was bo rn in Bethel 4 February 1796, the first child of Anna Hall Bartlett, seco nd wife of Enoch Bartlett, who had come from Newton, Massachusetts, US A, to Sudbury Canada (incorporated as "Bethel" in 1796) sometime after t he War for American Independence. He settled on a farm in the Middle Inte rvale section of Bethel. A number of Newton residents had an intere st in this area; W. B. Lapham, in his History of Bethel, records that t he rights of nine proprietors had been bought in 1774 by Aaron Richards on and Jonathan Clark of Newton. Nathaniel Segar, a resident of Newton a nd brother of Enoch Bartlett’s first wife, Eliza Segar, had come to Sudbu ry Canada in 1774, remained through the summer, then returned to Newto n. The American Revolution began in the spring of 1775, and Segar serv ed first in the defense of Boston, then re-enlisted for a mission to Ticon deroga and Canada. By the spring of 1779, the battlefront had moved to t he southern states, and Nathaniel Segar again traveled to Sudbury Canad a, this time accompanied by Jonathan Bartlett, a half-brother of Enoch. T hey took kettles for boiling down maple sap to make sugar, and after the s ap stopped running, spent their time clearing land and building shelters f or the winter. Segar’s land was on the north side of the river in wh at is now Hanover, and Jonathan Bartlett later settled on the south si de of the river, below Bean’s Corner. Four other brothers of Enoch also s ettled in Sudbury Canada. Perrigrine Sessions, writing about his grandfat her, recalls being told that Enoch, with one or two of his half brother s, brought their wives and possessions on hand sleds from Fryeburg fifty m iles to Sudbury Canada, the youngest child not yet born. Enoch’s first wi fe died about 1789. In 1790, Enoch was listed as a resident of Sudbury Ca nada, and in 1794 he married Anna Hall of Standish and brought her to h is home there. On 7 April 1800 (according to his grandson Perrigrine), En och moved from Bethel to Sunday River Plantation (Bostwick), and he is lis ted there in the 1800 census. His oldest daughter, Anna, born 4 Novem ber 1766 in Newton, married in 1790 Asa Foster, who was born around 176 5. Asa was a son of Abner Foster, one of the early pioneers in the Sund ay River Valley. Asa Foster owned land bordering Sunday River to the eas t, and in a deed dated 1812, he sold twenty nine acres bordering Sunday Ri ver to Enoch Bartlett, reserving twenty four acres to the north for himse lf and his wife Anna. It is possible that Asa Foster had built the old er part of the Bartlett house either before or after his marriage in 179 0, and Enoch Bartlett added the newer portion of the house to accommoda te his growing family. After moving to Sunday River Plantation (which bec ame part of the town of Newry in 1805) Enoch and Anna Hall Bartlett had s ix more children, in addition to Patty, Elisha, and Naomah who had been bo rn in Bethel: Jonathan in 1800, Polly in 1802, Aphia in 1804, Lydia in 180 6, Lorania in 1808 (d. 1811), and Enoch, Patty’s youngest brother, in 1811 .
In 1812, at age 17, Patty Bartlett married David Sessions, whose family h ad come from Vermont, USA and settled in Riley Plantation. They lived f or a few years in a log cabin on the Sessions farm. David’s mother, Rach el Stevens Session, was obese and suffered from rheumatism. She was a mid wife, and Patty began learning this profession by helping her mother-in-la w. In December 1815 (after the birth of their first child, Perrigrin e, on 15 June 1814) David and Patty bought a farm about nine miles to t he northeast in an unorganized territory called Andover Gore (1820 censu s) or Andover West Surplus (1830 census). Their new farm bordered Bear Riv er and was more fertile than David’s parents’ land in Riley Plantation.
After the move to Bear River, Patty, in reading her Bible, began to feel t hat baptism was necessary. Most of her neighbors were Methodists, so s he chose that church and was baptized 1 October 1816, becoming a memb er of the Methodist Church. In 1820, her husband David also became a Meth odist. The first Methodist house of worship in the Bethel circuit was bui lt in 1814 on the north bank of the Androscoggin River near Dustin’s Ferr y, which connected Newry with East Bethel. This church was twice stru ck by lightning; in July 1819, lightning killed Rebecca York McGill of Ea st Bethel during a service in the church.
Additional children were born to David and Patty as the years went b y; in 1816, a son, Sylvanus, was born, and in 1818, a daughter, Sylvia. A fter the birth of Anna in 1820, a larger home was needed, and David bui lt a fine new house into which the family moved in November of that yea r. In the spring of 1821, David’s parents moved in with them. By this ti me, Rachel Sessions was so crippled with rheumatism that she was unab le to do anything for herself, so Patty now had her mother-in-law to ca re for as well as her husband and children. At this time, David’s fath er was receiving a pension for his former military service of $96 per yea r. This cash income must have been welcome in an era when most transactio ns were by barter. In May 1823, another son, David, was born. During Sep tember of that year, Anna, aged three and one half, died of cholera. T wo days later, Rachel, Patty’s mother-in-law, became ill from the same ail ment and died on 1 October. A year later, in the fall of 1824, Rachel’s h usband went to visit a neighbor and died suddenly, probably from a strok e. In the next ten years, three more of the Sessions children died as epi demics of typhus and whooping cough struck the area. It is not known whe re David’s parents and the four children are buried. As an unorganized te rritory, Andover West Surplus had no town burial ground, so it seems like ly a family burial plot was set aside on the farm. In March of 1837, a go od portion of Andover West Surplus became part of Newry, and at a Newry to wn meeting in March 1854, the three town selectmen were authorized to choo se land for a burying ground in the former Andover West Surplus. One of t he selectmen at that time was Moses Kilgore, a brother of Perrigrine Sessi ons’ wife, Julia Ann, and another selectman had recently married as his se cond wife a sister of Julia Ann. It seems likely that these selectmen wou ld have chosen the burial ground where there were already graves. The pre sent cemetery on Route 26 in North Newry, called "Head O’Tide Cemetery ," is probably on land that was part of the Sessions’ 400 acre farm in t he 1820s and 1830s. In the 1960s, when the gravestone inscriptions were r ecorded by a Bethel Historical Society volunteer, there were no grave mark ers bearing the Sessions name, but the recorder noted there were some unma rked graves.
How did an area seventy miles from the ocean and now containing part of t he Appalachian Trail happen to have a school and cemetery named “Head O’Ti de?” N. S. Baker, Newry Superintendent of Schools in the 1890s, wrote a l etter to The Bethel News that was published on 5 August 1896; in the lette r, which spoke of Newry's past, Baker commented that “Squire Paine beg an at the Tides.” Daniel Paine’s house was a short distance north of t he Sessions home. Possibly one of the Paine family, looking at the wat er from the spring snow melt as it poured down Wight’s Brook into Bear Riv er, might have been reminded of a tidal bore. Wherever the name came fro m, it seems to have been in use as early as 1839; in his missionary dia ry of 1 October 1839, Perrigrine Sessions wrote “. . . thence to the he ad of the tide and I preached to Paine’s school house. . . .”
In August 1833, LDS missionaries Horace Cowan and Hazen Aldrich came sou th from Letter B through Grafton Notch and stopped at the Sessions ho me to preach the Mormon doctrine. According to Perrigrine Sessions, his m other believed as soon as she heard the preaching of Cowan and Aldrich, b ut David thought it was best to consider the matter for a time, so she wai ted until July 1834 to be baptized. In September of that year, at age twe nty, Perrigrine Sessions married Julia Ann Kilgore, the youngest daught er of John and Anna York Kilgore. On 15 August 1835, Brigham Young and Ly man Johnson visited Newry. They held a conference at the home of David a nd Patty Sessions, and Brigham Young crossed the Androscoggin River to pre ach at the Middle Intervale Meetinghouse, which at the time was witho ut a settled pastor. At the meeting in the Sessions home, Young spo ke of “establishing Zion” somewhere in the west, a place where Saints cou ld live together and practice their religious beliefs without fear of pers ecution. He encouraged the local Saints to sell their farms and trav el to Missouri, USA to join others in this endeavor. On August 21 of t he same year, the Sessions were visited by another Mormon elder and missio nary, William McLellin, who recorded in his journal that he had preached a bout two hours at a “bro Cessions.” By 16 September 1835, Perrigrine w as convinced that he should be baptized, and he asked Edward Partrid ge to baptize him. On September 22, Perrigrine’s and Julia Ann’s first ch ild was born and named Martha Ann.
Brigham Young and other members of the Twelve Apostles visited Newry aga in in August 1836, and once more preached in at Middle Intervale. He aga in urged the members of the Newry branch to sell their farms in Maine, U SA and travel to Missouri, USA where the Saints were gathering. Over t he years, the Sessions family had acquired a farm of 400 contiguous acr es along the Bear River. They had a saw mill and a grist mill using wat er power from the Bear River, and their home was large enough to ser ve as a public house for the region. Leaving all this seemed like a ha rd thing to do, but in May 1837, David and Perrigrine Sessions sold the ir farm to Almon and Eli Grover, who the next day sold it to Timothy Hilli ard Chapman, a son of Timothy Chapman and grandson of Rev. Eliphaz Chapma n, an early settler of Bethel.
T. H. Chapman was a young man, only nineteen years old at the tim e. It is difficult to know whether he ever lived on the farm in North New ry; in the 1840 census, the only Chapman on Bear River was George Granvil le Chapman. By the summer of 1848, Eliphaz Bradford Chapman was living th ere. In her Sunday River Sketches, Martha Fifield Wilkins writes that h er mother, Lucelia Elizabeth Chapman, was born on the farm 31 July 184 8. In 1857, Lucelia’s father sold the farm to Jonathan Bennett in exchan ge for a farm on the Magalloway River. Lucelia’s mother did not want to m ove to Magalloway, and refused to sign the deed, but the exchange of far ms happened anyway. According to Paula Wight, in her Newry Profiles, Jona than Bennett built the front part of the present house in 1860. Whether t he recently demolished kitchen ell went back to the time of the Sessions f amily, we don't know. The farm was passed from Jonathan Bennett to his s on Frank, and then on to his son Roy. In 2000, the property was sold by t he heirs of Roy Bennett to Keith Durgin.
In May 1837, the Sessions family packed their possessions for the trip wes t, and on 5 June, they left their home in Newry, accompanied by Patty’s si ster, Lucy Bartlett Powers, her husband Jonathan Powers, and their two son s. The Sessions family at this time included David and Patty, their son P errigrine and his wife and daughter, their daughter Sylvia and son Davi d. The Sessions family started with five two-horse teams and one singl e, and the Powers family had two horses. They passed through Shelburne a nd Lancaster in New Hampshire, USA, then south to Hanover, where they cros sed the Connecticut, USA River, then on to Rutland, Vermont, USA, Glens Fa lls and Saratoga Springs, New York, USA, and across New York State, U SA to Buffalo, where they boarded a steam boat to Fairport, Ohio, USA, a nd thence to Kirtland, Ohio, USA. Here they met Joseph Smith and heard h im preach, and suffered through an epidemic of measles for seven weeks. T hen they bid farewell to the Powers family who returned to Maine, USA, a nd continued their journey to Far West, Missouri, USA. The Ohio, USA sett lers were becoming unhappy with the increasing numbers of Saints in Kirtla nd, and Joseph Smith had chosen Far West, on the west bank of the Mississi ppi, USA River, as the next gathering place for the Saints. The trip betw een Ohio, USA and Missouri, USA was made easier by the National Road, a pr oject begun in 1811 that, when completed, led from Cumberland, Maryland, U SA, to Vandalia, Illinois, USA, and was an important link to the West unt il railroads were developed. The Sessions family arrived at Far West in N ovember 1837. Patty had been pregnant for the entire trip, and her last c hild, Amanda, was born after their arrival in Missouri, USA on 14 Novemb er 1837.

PEREGRINE BARTLETT (at cemetery, Perigrine)
Peregrine, born in 1768 in Newton, Mass., was the sixth son and last chi ld of the twelve children of Ebenezer and Anna (Ball) Bartlett. He settl ed north of the Androscoggin River in Howard Gore, now Hanover, and bui lt a home on land purchased from Phineas Howard, Sr. With its stately s et of buildings, this home is commonly referred to as the Charles Bartle tt Homestead and is located on U.S. 2 about one and a quarter miles from N ewry Corner, map location No. 90. According to Nathaniel Segar's dictat ed account of his capture by the Indians, the home wasn't in existen ce at the time of the Indian raid in 1781; it probably wasn't built unt il after the time of the purchase of the Howard Gore by Phineas Howard, S r. in 1794.
Peregrine purchased two parcels ofland from Phineas Howard, Sr., the fir st by deed dated November 29, 1809 for which he paid $300. This deed was t ypical of many of those given in that era and reads verbatim as follows:
"Beginning at a small ash tree standing in a steep gully so-called then ce running north 18° west to the north line of the gore thence N 671/ 2° E about 100 rods to a stake and stones thence S 18° E to a stake and st ones in Bethel north line thence west to bound began at."
Peregrine also purchased a second parcel from Phineas Howard, Sr., for $15 0, covered by a deed dated January 4, 1814 and containing about 70 acre s. The homestead was actually located in what is now Bethel, about 1100 fe et southerly of the gore line.
Peregrine was by trade a farmer and lumberman. He married Sarah (Merril l) of Andover, born in 1777, who gave birth to fifteen children. She pass ed away on September 15, 1831 at the age of 54. Peregrine passed away on D ecember 18, 1832 at the age of 64. Both are buried in Lot 13 in the old se ction of the Hanover Cemetery, along with six of their children.
