General Notes: Child - Jonathan Pasco
When Jonathan Pasco was born on September 29, 1760 in East Windsor,GeorgeII
sat on the the throne of England, and the thirteen
original colonies--still under British control--were sixteen years from
their independence. George Washington was 28 years old, and Abraham
Lincoln would not be born for fifty years. America was a new and
developing country and Jonathan Pasco would be a part of that
development. In 1776 Jonathan Pasco enlisted in Colonel John
Patterson'sMassachusetts regiment. He fought with that regiment in the
battle of Trenton. The battle of Trenton, known as the Christmas
campaign, was an important American victory because it renewed the spirit
of the patriot forces and seriously disarranged the plans of the British.
The battle was fought in the early morning of December 25, after
the commander-in-chief of all the Continental forces, George
Washington, crossed the Delaware River. They marched to the enemy's camp
at Trenton and took the Hessians, by surprise. Nearly one thousand
British prisoners were captured. Legend contends that sometime during
the Revolutionary War, Pasco and several other soldiers were captured by
Indians. An unsuccessful escape attempt was made resulting in their
recapture. As an example, one ofthe group was singled out, tortured and
skinned alive. In order to establish his parole not to
escape, Pasco was given a pocketbook made of the torture victim's
skin and was forced to take an Indian women for a wife. Pasco eventually
did escape and returned toEast Windsor. He named his second daughter
Cleons, after his Indianwife. The pocketbook has been handed down
through the generations. After returning from the Revolutionary War,
Captain Pasco constructed his home at 31 South Main Street in East
Windsor. He married a local woman, Elizabeth Allen, and fathered eleven
children while residing there. At the age of eighty-four, Jonathan
Pasco died. (August 21, 1844) He is buried in East Windsor in the Town
Street Cemetery (historical name forSouth Main Street), only a mile
south of the Pasco House. He also has a headstone in the Scantic
Cemetery that commemorates his revolutionaryWar service. Events and
happenings occurred, history was made and changed, and Jonathan Pasco's
house continues at 31 South Main Street moving through the
centuries. A collection of Pasco memorabilia is
included in the decor of the restaurant, creating an interesting tribute
to Jonathan Pasco. Pasco's decedents are scattered, but a few still
remain in the East Windsor area. All have been helpful in creating the
atmosphere of the restaurant and the accuracy of the history
presented.
The Jonathan Pasco House was built by its namesake in 1782 and completedfor
occupancy by his family in 1784. The original brick structure has been
completely restored to serve as a restaurant dedicated to providing fine
dining for dinner without altering the historical significance
and traditional flavor of the Jonathan Pasco House. Jonathan Pasco's

The Hawley Record of 1890 states that Joseph arrived in Boston, Massachusetts around 1629 or 1630 along with Thomas and Robert, who spelled theirlast name Haule. Thomas and Robert may have been brothers to Joseph or his sons from a first marriage. The Curtiss Genealogy of 1903 states thatHawley sailed to America in the ship Planter in 1635 along with Stratford proprietors Adam Blakeman, William Wilcoxson and William Beardsley. Hawleymarried his second wife, Katherine Birdseye, in 1646 and moved to Stratford, CT with his young children Samuel and Joseph. The Hawleys raised eightchildren in Stratford; Samuel, Joseph Jr., Elizabeth, Ebenezer, Hannah, Ephraim, John and Mary.
Hawley was one of the original fifteen proprietor's of Stratford's being listed second after Captain William Curtiss in the town patent of 1683. Hebecame the town's first clerk in 1650, and served in that capacity until 1666. He used a peculiar handwriting style that used French capital lettersand an abbreviated combination of small letters. This style was exactly like used in all public documents found in the state books of London,England at the time. He was well educated and may have worked for the state department in England prior to coming to America. He was first electedas Deputy on May 20, 1658, by the General Court of the Colony of Connecticut at Hartford under then Governor Thomas Welles. He also served astreasurer, justice of the peace and was elected ordinary, or tavern keeper, on December 29, 1675. He represented Stratford as a deputy, orrepresentative, in the legislature at the Connecticut Colony every year from 1658 to 1687 [5]. His name appears in the deed that purchased a vastamount of land from the Golden Hill Paugussett Indian Nation on April 22, 1662 which comprised most of the nearby towns of Trumbull, Monroe andShelton.
[edit] Derby
Hawley's purchase of land from the Indians that comprises the present-day town of Derby, CT, caused much controversy at the time. Hawley was latercourt ordered to transfer the land to the town of Derby [6]. His entire family had to sign off on the transfer of land on March 28, 1690 [7].
[edit] The Captain
According to the records of Stratford, Hawley became one of the first shipbuilders in Derby and Stratford. The records indicate that Hawley sold aone-eighth interest in his ship, the John and Esther, to John Rogers of New London, CT on October 27, 1678 for 58 pounds, one shilling and two pence[8] In 1680, he sold another one-eight interest in the ship to John Prentice. The ship was used in nearby Fairfield, CT harbor at the time. The saleof the John and Esther in 1678, may be one of the earliest documented sales of a commercial ship built in Connecticut. Hawley became a largelandowner or yeoman. It is believed by some that Hawley owned nearly 5,000 acres (20 km2) of land in his lifetime. Joseph Hawley died on May 20,1690 and is buried in Stratford. His will was probated in Fairfield County Probate Court in 1690 [9].
[edit] Religious rift
Joseph Hawley and Lt. Joseph Judson had a lengthy argument over the introduction of the half way covenant that eventually had to be settled byGovernor John Winthrop the Younger and the Connecticut Colony court in Hartford. They argued over the selection of a new minister and the directionof the church in Stratford which led to a major rift in the town. After the court's decision, many families left Stratford and followed Lt. JosephJudson to Woodbury, Connecticut to create their own settlement and church [10].

Birth: Mar. 23, 1810 Porter Oxford County Maine, USADeath: Jul. 18, 1886 Porter Oxford County Maine, USA Levi was born the eldest son of Daniel and Mary (Rundlett) Libby of Porter, Oxford, Maine. Levi was the first born children to the couple as well. Levi father passed away when he was only eight years old; his 3 young siblings ranged from the age of three to seven. Levi's mother (Mary) became their sole care giver, she never re-married. Levi got his two middle names from his mother side: Smith from his mother paternal side; her great grandmother (Leah Smith m. Theophilus Rundlett) and Chapman from his maternal grandmother (Phebe Chapman m. Joshua Rundlett). By the time Levi was sixteen years of age, he was operating the family farmer in which his mother maintained after the death of his father. Levi became known as a very successful farmer, by the time he was age 30; the family farm was valued at 1,200.00 which was a lot of money in 1840. On 23 Mar 1834, Levi married Elizabeth Dyer Boothby she was the daughter of another successful farmer in Limington, Maine; Thomas and Sarah "Sally" Dyer Boothby. Levi and Eliza (as she was called) had eight children: 1. Julia Ann Libby (m.York) 1835-1912; b/d in Porter, Maine 2. Warren Libby (m. Huntress) 1836-1919; b/d in Porter, Maine 3. Mary Libby 1839-1840; only child not to reach adulthood; b/d in Porter, Maine 4. Mary Jane Libby (Never married) 1841-1868; b/d in Porter, Maine 5. Elzira Boothby Libby (m. Cook) 1843-1928; bin Porter, Maine; d in Cornish, Maine 6. Almeda Bragdon Libby (m. Harmon) 1847-1877; b in Porter, Maine; d in Hollis, Maine 7. Thomas Boothby Libby (m. Downs) 1849-1930; b/d in Porter, Maine 8. Roscoe Libby (m. 1st Hubbard, 2nd Titcomb) 1853-1919; b/d in Porter, Maine Levi family farm & home (formerly his father) was located between his paternal grandfather Stephen Libby farm and the Jacob French Family Farm. The area today would be around the intersection of the French and Gilman Roads in Porter. His mother Mary remained living at the family farm home with Levi, his wife and children. Levi was well known in the town for all of his services, duties and committees he served on for the town, the Free Will Baptist Church and his neighbors. Levi eldest son Warren took over the operation of the farm by 1880 and cared for his aging parents Levi and Eliza until their deaths. L Levi died at the age if 76 yrs 3mos. 25 days on the farm in which he was born and lived his complete life on. He was laid to rest in the family cemetery (named Daniel Libby Cemetery) near his parents. His beloved wife Eliza joined him six years later.

...or Gypson, as his name variously appears in the records, was one of the Presbyterian Scots who came from Ireland to New England in 1720. He was admitted to the First Church in Wells, District of Maine, upon recommendation from Mr. James Wallace, the minister at "Magwater" in Ireland, whose letter was dated 22 May 1719.
...William Jepson came to Wells form Moywater, now Killala, co. Mayo, in the west of Ireland (called Magwater in the First Church records, Wells). Rev. James Wallace, who issued the disjunction certificate for William and Elizabeth Jepson was the minister of Moywater from 25 August 1709 to 1720. Irish wills were lost which makes research in Ireland difficult and usually unproductive. When Donald Lines Jacobus was doing the research on the Gipson family in the 1930's, the Presbyterian minister at moywater stated that the records of his church did not go back of 1840 thus making it impossible to ascertain William's and Elizabeth's marriage and the baptisms of their older children to trace their lineage.
A few general facts will therefore have to take place of a pedigree. The Scots families of Killala had been there only a generation, and before that were in one of the Scots' settlements in Co. Donegal. Sir Paul Gore, son of a London merchant, obtained estates in Donegal and Ballyshannon. He was M>P> for Donegal and is buried in the abbey there. His son, Sir Authur Gore, purchased estates in Donegal for two shillings sixpence an acre. It is almost certain that the Jepson's Boothbys and other Scots families came to Killala(then Moywater) about 1670, from Donegal. It is probable that the father of our William was a native of Donegal and the grandfather, most likely, was a native of Scotland.
William Jepson settled in Maine in 1719 or 1720. Named among settlers of 1720 in Wells were Thomas Boothby, Henry Boothby, and William Jepson, all of whom came from Magwater ( this name, here and elsewhere, should read Moywater), Ireland. The year of settlement is confirmed by the following deed, which is the only deed of the first William Jepson on record.
York Deeds(printed) 10:267. William Gypson of the Town of Diddeford in the County of York in the Province of Maine...for...ten pounds Money to me in hand Paid by Lieutt John Stagpole...(conveys) a Certain Grant of forty acres of land granted by the Town of Biddiford: at a Town Meeting... the second say of april in the year 1720: to be laid out in ye Common lands of Said Toen...this Eleventh day of february in the year of our Lord 1720/1...

William Graves (signed by mark, Capital W)
Martha Hawkswoth
ye mark of Mary Crumton
acknowledged at Biddeford August ye 28: 1721: before John Gray, JP
recorded March 9, 1721/2.
This shows he was first at Biddeford, where he was granted the land by the town, 2 April 1720, which he sold the following 11 feb 1720/21. He problably brought older children with him. In August 1721 he joined the church at Wells and here his two sons were baptized in 1722 and 1724. He had already died in 1723, the victim of an Indian raid. records of the First Chusrch of Wells, Maine, contain the following enteries:
August 4, 1721
William Jepson and Eliza: his wife received to Communion upon Recommendation from Mr. James Wallace Minister of the Gospel at Mag-water in the Kingdom of Ireland dated May 22, 1719.
June 3 1722
William son of William Jepson received Baptism
June 21 1724
James Son of William deceased and Eliza Jepson received Baptism.
The first of theses records shows that william and his wife were preparing to emigrate in May of 1719; and the quoted deed shows that they had settled in Maine by April 1720. william's early death is proven by the last church entry, and Bourne's Wells gives the following account of his death:
In the spring (1723) the Indaian scouts were again abroad...Aug. 27, Mr Jepsum (Jepson) was captured and afterwards murdered. He was at the sawmill at Mousam for some special purpose, and probably alone. Such was the terror inspired by the savage outrages, that he remained here unburied a fortnight, when Joseph Hill and about twenty others, prepared for the purpose, came here, and interred him. His bones problably lie in the field, not far from the house of Jefferson W. Sargent (1875).
There is no probate for William Jepson, and no deed from hi heirs.
