Donald Galvin
KENNEBUNK - Donald J. Galvin of Pine Bluff, Cat Mousam Road, Kennebunk, passed away March 23, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center with his loving family at his side.
He was born in Millinocket on July 7, 1918, the youngest child of George and Ellen Galvin. He attended schools in Millinocket and the Brothers of Mary Seminary in New York City. In 1941 he entered the U.S. Army serving in the Medical Corps. Upon his honorable discharge in 1945, he was employed by Doctors' Hospital in New York City. He was employed by John Wanamaker's in New York, then moved to Philadelphia and worked at the Rittenhouse Plaza.
He enjoyed his vacations at home, especially in Kennebunk, where, during the summer, he was often a winner of dance contests at the Wells Casino. He was a self-taught musician who played a mean jazz piano. He returned to Kennebunk after major heart surgery in "Philly" to live with his sister, Mary. He formed many friendships over the years with those that cared for him and enabled him to live alone at Pine Bluff. Louise Hill, Dot Turner, Doug Rogers and Susie Eggenberger were just a few of these special people.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Daniel, John, George and Francis; three sisters, Catherine Michaud, Margaret Lesuer, and her twin sister, Mary Ellen Durgin; and nephews George and Patrick Galvin; one sister-in-law Marie Galvin; cousins, Mary and Margaret Whalen, Rose Jamo, Catherine Bonis and her husband, Charles, Michael Provenzano, husband of the late Patricia Provenzano, and Harry and Sharon Rush; nieces, Carole Ann Greely and her husband, George of Biddeford, Ellen Galvin of Millinocket, and Nancy Townsend of Lakeland, Fla. and husband Don and Catherine Jane Galvin of Portland; nephews, George Galvin and his wife Julie of Kennebunk, John Durgin and his wife, Nina of Thomaston, Paul Michaud of Millinocket, and Byron "Chuck" Lesuer and his friend Barry Doughty of Chebeague Island. He was like a father to his grandniece, Anne Marie Mustapha, who with husband, Morgan, gave him three great-grandnephews, Ryan, Patrick and Seamus. He was close to his other grandnieces, Shawna Durgin, who looked upon him as her special uncle, Lorilee Durgin Reuillard, husband Mark; Lisa and husband Bob Conn; and Shawna Galvin and grandnephew Peter Mark Cummings. He also leaves great-grandnephews Nicholas, Alexander and Spencer Reuillard

In 1763, a number of families, led by Israel Perley, arrived in four vessels from New England, and settled at Maugerville, on the St. John-the first permanent British settlement above the mouth of the river. George was one of these along with his brother, Nehemiah. This is also the source of this birth date and his parents names.
His petition for land states that he came from Great Britain (colonial Massachusetts) with his family in 1763. He and his brother were among the first twenty settlers. He settled on lot #70. His log house was said to be the oldest house in Sunbury County, until it was destroyed in 1959.
He was engaged in lumbering and owned several pieces of property. The inventory of his estate taken at Lincoln 10th Aug. 1799 by John and George Hayward, Lem Wilmott, Asa Perlay and William Boone included (original spelling): 2 old hats, 1 body coat, 1 velvit vest & britches, 3 wast coats, 3 pr. stockings, 2 fine shirts, 1 Cotton, 4 pr sheets, 4 pillow cases, 4 cups and sawsers, 1 Large puter Bason, 3 pr stockings, 1 tea pot, 1 old tea kettle 1 Damask Tab'l Cloth, 1 Damsk Cloth, 2 Damask tablecloths small, 6 napkins, 1 bead spread, 2 Linen sheets, 1 blankit, 2 old sheets, 1 cover bed, 1 colleted blankit or bead cover, 1 colleted bead cover, 1 bead battens & pillow, 1 bead batten and 2 pillows, 4 old puter plates, 6 knives and forks, 3 puter spoons, 5 sliver tea spoons, 1 ease chare, 1 old mahogny bead stead, 1 clothes baskit, 2 Chares, 1 Desk, 2 quart mugs, 6 cups & sawers, 3 small boots, 1 butter crook, 18 3/4 bushel corn, 11 1/2 bushel wheat, 4 cows, 1 calf, 3 swine, 10 sheep & 3 lambs before shorn, 1 hoe, 2 3 years heffers, 1 year old heffer, 31# butter, 317# pork, The Hart farm, Lorr of land on the Oromocto, 1 sett old curtain, 1 birch table, 1 pine table, 1 churn. General Notes: Wife - Ann Durley
Her name appears in undocumented sources as Durley. However, there is no trace of the name Durley anywhere in New Brunswick records. It seems likely that she came from Massachusetts, as did almost all of the early NB settlers. Perley is very common in Essex county, MA and in early NB. I think she could be a widow of a Perley or an unaccounted for descendant of Allen and Susanna Perley. Allen is of Welsh descent and settled in early 1630's in Ipswich.
Some records indicate her daughter Ann Hayward was born in Manchester, England. Could this be New England? Manchester, MA is in Essex county. She is referred to as Nancy in some land records.

He attended the Anglican Church in Maugerville. He probably lived in Lincoln most of his adult life.
