According to Geoffrey of Monmouth, Ygerna or Igraine (Eigr in Welsh) was t
heDuchess of Cornwall, ravishing wife of Gorlois and mother of King Arthu
r. After the death of Gorlois, she married Uther Pendragon, who, under fal
se pretenses and aided by Merlin's trickery, had slept with her, impregnat
ed her withArthur and had been responsible for her husband's death. Chret
ien de Troyes claims that after Uther's death, Ygerna retired to a pala
ce she had had builtfor herself known as the Chastel des Merveilles or "C
astle of Wonders".
Shewas the daughter of Amlawdd Wledig (the Imperator), a member of a youn
ger branch of the Royal House of Dumnonia. He was probably a nobleman of E
rgyng, though he has also been attached to the North of Britain and Britta
ny. His family are central to the Mabinogion story of 'Culhwch and Olwen
'. As well as Arthur, various sources have attributed Ygerna with sever
al children by her first marriage to Gorlois. They had daughters named Ela
ine, (Anna) Morgause and Morgan, though the latter may be mistakenly attac
hed to them. They had one son, Gormant, but Cador is also sometimes errone
ously said to have been their child.
Igraine comes from the Welsh name Eigyr. She was the mother of Arthur a
nd the daughter of Amlawdd. She married Gorlois, by whom she had a numb
er of daughters. (This husband is sometimes called Hoel.) Uther Pendrag
on had a relationship with her while he was under a spell which made him r
esemble her husband. That night Igraine conceived Arthur.
Ygraine, Ygerna, Eigyr - The Lady Igraine remains on of the most fascinati
ng but mysterious characters in Arthurian Legend. There is little referen
ce to her other than the role she played in the coming of Arthur, howeve
r, all accounts, no matter by whom written, have remained virtually the sa
me. This leads most to believe that the Lady Igraine is one of the few cha
racters in the legend that was an actual person whos history is document
ed well.
Igraine's lineage is strong and there has been little arguement as to t
he truth. She is decendant from Joseph of Arimathea (who was said to ha
ve captured the blood of Christ in the Holy Grail). This made an interesti
ng choice for mother of Arthur who would eventually quest afterthe Gra
il itself to restore his kingdom. It was possible that Igraine's bloodli
ne was necessary for sucess in this venture; therefore being chosen specif
ically to birth Arthur. She was the daughter of Amlawdd although her moth
erwas never mentioned.Igraine is most noted as the mother of King Arthu
r. She was the Lady Igraine while married to the Gorlois, Duke of Tintag
el (pronounced tin-ta-jel). From that union, she mothered the Ladies Morga
wse, Morgan, and Elaine. Notably the most beautiful woman in the kingdo
m, she was coveted byKing Uther Pendragon who led an attack against Tinta
gel to have her. Merlin enchanted Uther to become the outward guise of t
he Duke so he could rape Igraine. From the union came Arthur; with a m
ix of Pendragon and Arimathea blood.The Duke died while in battle again
st Uther's armies and Uther took Igraine as his wife; thus she became t
he Queen Igraine.
The only notable disagreement between scholars was the nature of the relat
ionship between Uther and Igraine. Some say she hated Uther for killing h
er husband and decieving her with magick. The only child to be born of t
he unions was Arthur. Yet other scholarsinsist that Igraine took on her r
ole as Queen willingly and produced not only Arthur with Uther but a daugh
ter named Anne.
After the birth of Arthur andthe theft of him by Merlin, Uther died. Aft
er that, little is known about Igraine other than the fact that she retir
ed to a nunnery and died in cloister.

The church is on the north-west side of Greencastle Street, Kilkeel, in the townland of Magheramurphy and parish of Kilkeel The first minister (Rev Charles Wallace) in Mourne was ordained in 1696 but he was ordained to a congregation at Ballymageough which was amalgamated in 1720 with one at Derryoge A new thatched meeting-house was then erected behind the site of the present church and was replaced by a new building In 1831, though another stone built into the present Church is dated 1756 Further improvements took place in 1887 and 1933 There is no old marriage or burial register and the baptismal register only goes back to 1840 The other congregation, known as Kilkeel Presbyterian Church, also has only a baptismal register and it dates from 1842 It has no graveyard and the separate one behind the church which is still extant has no stones earlier than 1865 The graveyard extends on all sides of the church and most of the stones are clearly readable However, the ground is rough and several of the stones are in densely overgrown enclosures The oldest stone in the graveyard dates from 1793 and all with dates before IS65 have been copied There are no old memorials in the church. Burkes Commoners of Britain and Ireland Vol2 page 500. states that Patrick HUNTER was the son of William HUNTER, of Bunbury Yards, and a great grandson of Mungo HUNTER " as appears in a charter, now in possession of the family, dated 27th Sept 1611, by his marriage with Jean Cunningham.
Patrick HUNTER was 19th Laird of HUNTERston and co-heir on marrying Jean Cunningham (her mother was Robert HUNTER's sister). They had three sons: Robert, Henry & Francis, and two daughters. A large part of farmland was sold that was distant from Hunterston to consolidate the Estate. Patrick died in 1665 aged 74.
The original Hunter lands were Ardneil (or "Arnele" or "Arnell" or "Arnelle"). Ardneil Bay extends from West Kilbride towards Portencross on the south side of the Hunterston Peninsula. Ardneil is on the road between Portencross and West Kilbride.
The present estate of Hunterston is to the north of this, to the northwest of West Kilbride,. The old spelling of the family was "Huntar", and the estate, "Huntarstown".
Burkes says that Hunter of Hunterston "owned the present estates as early as the time of Alexander II, King of Scotland" (reigned 1214-49).
Hunterston Castle was built in the thirteenth century by the Laird of Hunterston. The fourteenth Laird built the Great Hall at Hunterston 1500.
Hunterston House built beside the old castle was begun in 1799, after the time our branch divided into the Wallace line.
The Hunterston Peninsula (the lands of the Castle) was zoned for industrialisation in the 20th cent, with a Compulsory Purchase Order in 1956 by the South of Scotland Electricity Board. A nuclear power station, "Hunterston B", was built on Hunterston lands on the sea side of the Castle, begun in 1967, completed 1976. Hunterston Castle and Hunterston House survive together.
The image attached is Hunterston Castle, Ayrshire Scotland. This is the ancestral home of the Hunter Clan. It is reportedly the longest clan-inhabited castle in Scotland.

Was a taxi driver in Chicago.
James Henry McMenamin, born Dec. 14, 1885, died 1967. He was the first born of Hugh and Mary. His education was limited to a one room school house. Managing the family's financial responsibilities and working the many farms were his main chores through his early years. A small worn note book, its pages marked with pin holes and various sums, attests to his care of the mortgage and rent payments. Even in his later years he continued to "pin" receipts to his check book.
He met his wife to be (Mae) at a barn raising dance. Mae (Mary Frances) Cunningham was a city girl and had been invited to the dance through a cousin named Brock. She had deep blue eyes; early pictures testify to her beauty. Prior to marriage she worked for the telephone company, a job she would return to in later life.
James and Mae married in 1908 at Our Lady of the Angels Church. She was 17 and he 22. They moved on to Castelton, N.D., perhaps it offered cheap land from some homesteader program. Their first child was born there but their second was born 18 months later in Menagha, Minn.. In Menahga, James wheat farmed about 1500 acres. In 1920 a failed crop forced their return to Chicago.
He stayed on for a few months to make the best out of the sales of property and equipment. The bank certainly owned more of it than he did. The train trip back to Illinois was an early memory of Elsie. Since her mother was very pregnant ten year old Jim was put in charge of the little ones on that all day journey. It was exactly Nov.14, 1920 because upon arriving at their Cunningham grandparents, her mother went into labor and delivered the baby of the family, Hazel, right there at 846 Trumbell Ave. Within a short time they moved to 852 N St Louis. Just a shortcut through a neighbor's yard made a visit to Grandma and Grandpa Cunningham's house.
Being mechanically gifted, James opened a garage. A number of his customers were cab drivers who probably helped him decide to buy a Checker cab. In later years his children would come to believe that his asthma and other health problems were the likely result of exhaust pollution encountered in badly ventilated garages, both his own and Checkers.
By the early '40's, asthma forced him to retire. With their children all married, he and his wife bought a small farm in Rolla, Missouri, the northern edge of the Ozarks. It was 40 acres, mostly wooded, only an acre was cultivated. Occasionally horses were boarded or a few head of cattle were taken in for grazing. He worked for the Missouri School of Mines as an over all maintenance man. Mae returned to work for the telephone company, there was only one telephone company at that time. She died of cancer of the stomach in 1952.
James lived until 1967. They are both interred in Ozark Memorial Garden, Rolla. James was known to enjoy crossword puzzles. Both he and Mae were avid readers.

The ancient Cunningham lands lie opposite the Isle of Arran on the wind-blown west coast of Scotland - an area that until the recent reform of local government, was known as 'Cunningham District'. More specifically, the Cunninghams controlled, or sought to control, the valleys of the Annick Water, Lugton Water and the Bombo Burn - all good farmland stretching between the towns of Kilwinning, Kilbirnie, Stewarton and Kilmaurs (incidentally the 'kil-' prefix in Scottish place names means 'cell' or church: Kilwinning means church of St Finnan and Kilbirnie the church of St. Brendan). Banches of the family were settling lands elsewhere: notably at Polmaise and Auchenbowie, just south of Stirling and at Kilmaronock Castle by Loch Lomond.
However the family's success in Ayrshire had led to conflict with another expansionist Norman family who had received lands a little further north in Renfrewshire - the Montgomerys. Relations might, in any case, have been strained in the troubled sixteenth century since the Montgomerys were strong supporters of Mary Queen of Scots and the Cunninghams were Protestant reformers (he Earl of Glencairn, "our" James Cunningham, had John Knox dispense communion to him and his family privately at his house near Port Glasgow in 1556). The struggle for local domination was certainly on fire in 1528 when the Montgomerys sacked the Cunninghams' Kerelaw Castle and it came to a head in 1586 when Alexander Cunningham of Aiket, David Cunningham of Robertland and others killed Hugh Montgomery, 4th Earl of Eglinton near the Bridge of Annick. The Montgomery revenge was ruthless: they shot Alexander Cunningham near Aiket, cut David Cunningham to pieces then killed every other Cunningham they could find. However they did not find them all since the Montgomery seat of Eglinton Castle was then burnt in retaliation - and the feud rumbled on for another twenty years.
In the next century the Earls of Glencairn continued prominent in national life: the 9th Earl raised an army for King Charles II in 1654 in an attempt to overthrow Cromwell's Scottish administration. The rising failed but when Charles II returned as king, he appointed Glencairn as his Chancellor of Scotland, a post he held from 1661 to 1664.
When their descendants return to their roots in Ayrshire they find that most of the prominent Cunningham castles - Clonbeith, Robertland, Kerelaw and Glengarnock - are now in ruins. Kilmaurs, Aiket, and Caprington Castle survive, although much altered, and are in private hands. Only one of the Cunningham houses is open to the public each summer: this is Finlaystone three miles east of Port Glasgow (where the Earl of Glencairn entertained John Knox) and which now houses an exhibition on the MacMillan clan. Maxwellton House in Dumfriesshire is now a private house but the gardens are open to the public. Dean Castle, north of Kilmarnock, which the Earls of Glencairn had for some thirty years in the late 18th century, is open to the public all year round but is really the family seat of the Boyds, Earls of Kilmarnock.
The Cunninghams were essentially a successful farming people and for many centuries the headline events - affairs of state, murder and revenge - had little impact on the families that eked out a living beside the Annick Water. They were not much involved in war, being more pre-occupied with their milking pails - and as the family motto has it, with "Over Fork Over".
