General Notes: Husband - James Cox
"His political sympathies were with the people as opposed to the proprietaries. When the rule of the Assembly had become intolerable and the titles of the freeholders to their lands seemed likely to be called in question, the governing body were denounced as enemies to the country. In 1707, an attempt was made to bring about the dissolution of the Assembly and to elect a new one. With this end in view a fund was raised, known as the 'Blind Tack', to which James Cox and his brother, Joseph, were liberal contributors. Whatever may have been the outcome of that campaign, the rights of freeholders were ultimately assured, and he lived for many years afterwards in peaceful possession of his estate at Upper Freehold, which passed at length, without a cloud upon its title, to his numerous family. His body was interred in the family plot on his farm at Upper Freehold, where, as his will states, many of his kindred were buried."

Arms. - "Ermine, on a fesse sable three crescents argent."
Crest. - "A chevalier on horseback, his borken spear in bend, all proper." Motto. - "Viva Deo et Vives." (Arms taken from Burke's General Armory, 1884)

CRAIGS IN NEW BRUNSWICK
As I have written in the preface to this work, I began to gather dataon my Craig ancestry in 1932 by questioning my grandmother, my father, and other older members of the family. The earliest ancestor whom they could recall was James Craig, who, according to family tradition, once owned the city of Saint
John, New Brunswick. Following this lead, I turned to the archive records in New Brunswick in an effort to identify this James Craig and find out when he came into New Brunswick and who his parents were. And this is where confusion began. Obviously many Craig families were amongthe early settlers in New Brunswick. Esther Clark Wright, in her definitive work, Loyalists of New Brunswick, lists six Craig:: one James, two Johns, two Roberts, and one David. Scores of Craig names appear inland transactions during the thirty years following the Loyalist immigration. The land grant records of the city of Saint John show that in1784 one James Craig received a grant of land there, which was sold -in 1819 by his sons Daniel, Christopher, and Jacob. We can be certain that this James Craig was our ancestor, because we know that he had three sons who were thus named. We can also identify our James Craig as one who received land in York County (also in 1784), because records of the Woodstock Church show that his children, Maria, Christopher, and Jacob, were baptized there. But continued intermittent searching over a period of more than forty years has not clearly established anything about this family before 1784.
However, there is much confusing evidence to cloud the issue. We havefound records of a James Craig, loyalist, who made claims to the provincial government for losses sustained at the hands of rebels. This man was from Oakham, Mass., from which town he was forced to flee, leaving land which he
had inherited from his father twenty years before. Prom vital recordswe know a good deal about this man. He was the son of James, and Rachel (Wallis) Craig. He was born May 7, 1729, and married Mary Holton in 1751. They had several daughters and one son, James, who died a few days after birth. Some researchers have identified this James Craigwith our ancestor who received land in Saint John and Woodstock, NewBrunswick, and who married Mary Blake about 1788 and had a family of six children. I have rejected this being almost impossible.. The James Craig from Oakham was 59 years old in 1788 when he would have married Mary Blake who was then 16 , presumably after having lost his wife (by death or divorce). We can grant this as highly improbable. Andwe must bear in mind further a sister, Mary, who married William Orser about 1788 and and bore him six children. the last of whom was bornin 1800. In order to bear a child as late as 1800, Mary Craig would have to be more than 25 years younger than a brother born in 1729.From the point of view of age the James Craig born in 1729 might havebeen the father of our James Craig, and I believe there were those who maintain that this was the case. However, the vital records of Oakham, Mass. mentioned only one son born to James Craig there, and thatson (James) died a few days after birth.
When one takes into consideration all the things we know of James Craig of Oakham, Mass., it seems to me virtually impossible that either he or any son of his, was our ancestor.
In 1930 when Manly H. Craig (127.1) compiled his manuscript on the Craig family, he identified our James Craig with Sir James Craig, British military hero, who was Governor-General of Canada ,(1807-11). As for me, I give this theory no credence whatsoever; therefore, I declineto discuss it here. However, for the convenience of those readers whowould like to have the opportunity to draw their own conclusions, I have presented this case as concisely as I can in the Supplementary Material section, beginning on page 335.
So I continue to hold to the hypothesis that our James Craig came into New Brunswick in 1783 or 1784 as a young man, following service in the British Army as a loyal subject. It seems almost certain that his sister Mary accompanied him. This leads me to believe that his parents, or at least a widowed mother, may also have been with him. Who these parents were and where the family came from is a complete mystery as far as I am concerned . Our family, tradition has been persistent in maintaining that James emigrated from Northern Ireland directlyinto New Brunswick. I am quite willing to believe
that the family came from Northern Ireland (probably of Scottish descent}, but I suspect that it may have been James's father, or Possibly his grandfather who emigrated from Northern Ireland, because I know that usual family tradition almost invariably ignores two or three generations and, places the emigration from Europe much too close to one's own time.
It is a major disappointment to me that I have not " able to establish parentage and place of origin for our ancestor, James Craig. However, I feel that there are many sources of information that I have investigated, and I feel that future researchers have a very reasonable chance to succeed in finding out who our James Craig really was and where he came from.
The only knowledge we have of our James Craig comes from scanty family tradition and a few New Brunswick records. Tradition says that he was born- in the North of Ireland of Scotch descent, came to New Brunswick, owned "all the land on which the city of Saint John is built", and married Mary Blake there At about the same time his sister, Mary Craig married William Orser, who was also in New Brunswick. Each of the two families had six children. Soon Mary (Craig) Orser died; and atabout the same time James Craig disappeared.-It is said that he left his house one day and was never seen again. It is said that he left his house one day and never seen again. It is generally believed that he was killed by Indians. Shortly thereafter Mary (Blake) Craig married William Orser. (The widow of the brother married the widower of thesister.)
As for official records, we have the following:

From these pieces of information we can state a few facts and make some
conjectures about our Craig ancestors. There is no reason to doubt that the
family originated in Scotland and migrated to Northern Ireland, because we
know that the name was very common centuries ago in Scotland, and weknow
also that thousands of families now living in Northern Ireland are descended
from Scottish families who migrated there sometimes after the beginning of the 17th century,. And the coming to the American colonies could have taken place any time after 1620, but no later than just before the American Revolution. for I believe-it quite probable that theMary Craig who petitioned for
land in Woodstock in 1788 was our James Craig's sister, and her petition states that her father and a brother (other than James) fought and died in the Revolution. We can assume that her mother was also deceased at that time Otherwise, it would have been Mary Craig's widowed mother, and not Mary herself, who would have petitioned for land. Therefore,I hypothesize that James Craig, after his discharge from militaryservice in DeLancey's lst Battalion, came into New Brunswick (in 1784), bringing his sister Mary, who was probably the only other survivingmember of his family.
He received a small parcel of land (described as 40" x 100" when it was sold in 1819) in the city of St. John. Later the same year (15 Oct 1784) he received 100 acres probably near Woodstock. Early historians of this area have told us that it was a common practice to maintain large groups of immigrants in temporary quarters, or on small land grants, near the mouth of the river during the winter; then in the spring these newcomers would venture up the River St. John to find and settle the larger tracts of land granted to them for future homes. So it is my guess that Jam: and his sister Mary stayed in St. John only throughthe winter, and then in the spring of 1785, went up the river to settle on his land grant near Woodstock and clear the forest to build their home.
We have no marriage date for James Craig, but the deed dated Oct 1787is signed by him alone (no wife countersigned), but his petition of 12 Sep 1788 states that he has a family,. It seems safe to assume, then, that the marriage took place between these two dates.
During the next few years James appears to have been involved in several land transactions. This seems natural, for land selling and swapping was going on constantly then. There are many recorded instances of men abandoning the poor lots that had been granted to them arbitrarilyand asking for grants in more fertile areas. Nevertheless it would seem that James and Mary never moved very far away from the Woodstock area since their youngest child was baptized in the Anglican Church there,
1 Jun 1800.
This must have been shortly before James "disappeared". I have never heard any very concise theories on this disappearance. I have heard itsuggested that he may have become suspicious of his brother-in-law, William Orser, who was probably a widower by that time, and therefore he decided deliberately to "disappear". But so far as I know there is no evidence to support this - or any other - theory of James Craig's disappearance.
We have been somewhat more fortunate in finding information about Mary Blake and her family. The earliest permanent settlement at the mouth of the River St. John reputedly was the fishing post established atPortland Point (Saint John) by Simonds, White, and Peabody. I have seen a copy of the "Return of the State at the mouth of the Harbor of the River St. John, 1 Aug 1775". made by Mr. Simonds. Among the "Heads of Families", he lists Christopher Blake, and says of his family: "1 man, 1 woman, 2 girls, 1 cow, 1 sheep; religion, Protestant; nationality, American". It is quite well established that Katy Blake was born 6 May 1772, at St. John, so there is virtually no doubt that she was a daughter of Christopher Blake, and tradition says she was the oldest daughter. (Many of Mary Blake's descendants continue the tradition that she was the first female white child born on the St. John River, but this cannot be true, for there were many families of pre-Loyalists living in the Maugerville area as early as 1762). The Simonds, White, and Peabody fishing company had its headquarters in Newburyport, Mass.,so it is quite probable that Christopher Blake came from Newburyport or its environs. There was a Blake family who came very early to the American colonies and settled in the vicinity of Dorchester, Mass. I amconvinced that our Christopher Blake was descended from this family because the Christian name Christopher occurred several times in the early generations of Blakes of Dorchester.
Earl Caughey (157.31) examined records of the Day Accounts of the Simonds fishing company, and he made this report: "Christopher Blake smoked and drank rum, but in the fall of 1771 (Oct.)°he started buying blankets, ribbons, cloth, etc., and cut down on his rum allowance, and wasn't docked for so many days absent. So one may assume that he had married, and as Polly (Mary) was supposed to have been born in 1772, I would think that she might safely be assumed to be the elder of the twodaughters listed in the census."
Th6 date and place of Christoper Blake's death is not known, but strangely enough, tradition says that he "disappeared". He was supposedly killed by Indians, because some bits of red hair were found in the woods near his home, and he reputedly had red hair.
It seems a strange coincidence to me that both the father and the first husband of Mary Blake "disappeared". I am convinced that this storyapplies to only one of them. But which one? As far as I am concerned,it is 50-50. Our limited knowledge of both the men and their circumstances gives us no hint whatsoever. It is probable that one of these men disappeared suddenly and was never heard of again, and that the other died in some quite natural way, but no one now living knows where or when, and no death record or tombstone for him has ever been found. This might very well have happened to either Christopher Blake or hisson-in-law, James Craig.
I might also point out that we know nothing at all about the death ofJames Craig's sister, Mary (Craig) Orser. We merely assume that she died no later than 1800 because her husband was married to Mary)Blake) Craig by 1801. If no tombstone, no other record has ever been foundfor Mary (Craig), then
why might not the same be true of her brother, James Craig ? These two deaths, brother and sister may have occurred within a rather short time span; both were comparatively young and they lived in close
proximity to each other. Is there is not good likelihood that theyboth died in an epidemic and were buried in an unmarked grave and the children all but one of them were very young--one could not have been more than 11 years old and a long time before they passed the story onto one of their children. Then when it was was told by this generation onto the next, the teller might easily become confused. Was it the great grandmother or grandfather who "disappeared . So this dramatic disappearance could have been attached to both.
There is another story connected to Mary Blake which has become a legend.
,It is said that and that when she was very young girl, she was captured by an Indian and that she
lived with them a few before she was rescued .
After Mary (Blake) married William Orser, they moved up the river to the Hartland area. Both are buried in the Greenwood cemetery, near thecenter of town, over looking the Town Hall. In the town hall, there is a room, called the Orser room, a kind museum, where a large portrait of Mary(Blake) is called the "Mother of Hartland" and surrounded byother portraits of her illustrious sons and grandsons and other portrait memorabilia.
The following Information received from Pat Lackey received via e-mail Jan 15,2007 "patlackey@rogers.com"
James first appears in DeLancey's Brigade in Oct 1776 when they had their first official muster, just after the taking of Brooklyn Heights. Historical accounts of DeLancey, suggest that these first enlistedmen came from Hempstead Swam, where they had fled from the surrounding neighbourhoods of Newtown, Jamaica, Hellsgate Cove and of course Hempstead. Apparently, they were a rather4 ragged bunch by the time Oliver DeLancey rescued them, amongh other things they had no shoes. After the battle at Brooklyn, they took many rebel prisoners, who were turned in barefoot, and thereafter DeLancey's men had their first good boots in months.
I believe James came from Newtown as we know that in Onderdonk's Revolutionary Incidents of Queens Co. the payroll for Capt. Richard Manee's company of rebel militia listed Christopher and Jacob who were listed as of Newtown. They probably didn't flee to the swamp as James didin 1776 as Jacob was probably considered too young and Christopher astoo9 old. They were only after the young men at this point. They both later deserted the rebel militia and joined DeLancey's Brigade in April 1778.
On 24 Oct 1779, Jacob 2was killed in action along with 3 other men. Christopher is listed as in Reg. Hospital. He died in 1789. James was listed as on leave.
Gord Bloom tells of a family story that James was at his father' s bedside, being comforted by his friend Sgt. Daniel McSheffrey. That shortly after this posibly within six months or so Christopher's widow married Sgt. Daniel. This would account for why Christopher's Widow didnot claim for land und Christopher's name, as she was no longer his widow, and why his daughter Mary did.
In Orders of Council Saturday 14th January 1797 at Fredericton, JamesCraig and Daniel McSheffrey both took out tavernkeepers licences using each other and Darius Dickenson as surities or garauntees of each other.
The last mention of James in DeLancey's is in a muster (In The Ward Chipman Papers -Public Archieves Reel 9818 9819 9820) was that of Nov 1799, when the Woodstock Militia was mustered with their families at Fort Presque Ille because Indians from Maine were being stirred up to make trouble by Americans who wanted the boundary moved to include the St. John River. The musterr reveals 1 man killed reconoitring for indians. James wa a member of the militia. I have heard the legend abuot James being killed by Indians not Christopher B lake. In fact the legend says that James went to check on the state of his livestock on an island, while checking for indians. He lived six miles from Presque Ile Fort. One of the petitions September 1799 when he states "Yourmemoralist four years ago has set himself down on a vacant tract of land on the east side of the River St. John abut six miles below the garrison of Presque Ille, built a house thereon, an cleared about twelveacres of land. That there is a small island at the mouth of the Becaquimac Creek abut three quarters of a mile felow where your memoralisthas settled, in quantity about three acres of land, partly improved by the Indians, which improvement your memoralist has purchased as will appear by a Conveyance which Memoralist will provide. That your memoralist has further improved the said Island so that it is now quite clear.
There is also a story that James and his siter were fishing on the St. John or Becaquimic that James had the idea that if he tied a seine net to a tree and the other end to his leg, he could wade out and catch the fish swiming upstream there were so many (spawning season) thatthe net was pulled along pulling James in and nearly drowning him. This was not the only fishy story in this area, neighbour William Seeley was spear fishing from a bout, he was spearing and flinging dozens of salmon over his shoulder into the boat. When ge got to shore he found that they had all jumped out.
