Mr. Blanchard was a native of this country, born in Dryden Feb 14, 1832. His father was William Blanchard and mother Marilla Taylor. His grandfather was Nathaniel Blanchard who came to this country from England and settled near Boston. While Mr. Blanchard was an infant his parents moved from Dryden to Owego, NY. When he was about 6, they emigrated to Michigan, leaving his younger brother Hartson and himself with grandparents in Dryden and they took Justus the oldest with them. After a short residence in Michigan the mother died of typhoid and father soon followed. John then went to live with an uncle in Meadeville, PA remaining there about 4 years. The uncle sold the property and uncle took John and visited friends in Lansing, NY. Uncle then decided to immigrate to Illinois and drove away deserting John and leaving him crying bitterly in the road. Mr. Blanchard made his way to a near by farm house where a kindly Capt. John Guthrie kept him over night and hired him out the next day to a farmer to work for board and clothes and to be allowed to attend school in the winter. He did this for about 7 years. He then apprenticed himself for 3 years to Adin Morton to learn carriage ironing.
After working in this trade for 6 years and determining that it was injuring his health, he determined to go to California and seek health and fortune in the gold mines. He went by water via Panama. While on the Pacific the steamer took fire several times and twice thought they would burn to the fire's edge. But they landed safely in San Francisco and at once made his way to the mines. He was ill for several weeks but gradually gained his strength and took to work. Here he was successful and banked a goodly sum, but lost it all when the bank failed. Again taking courage he started anew and by dint of hard work and regid economy gained another financial start and started for home. He visited Illinois thinkiing to settle there, but contracting malarial fever came home and was subjected to a long and severe illness and his savings again was lost.
In May 1886, Mr. Blanchard married Elois A. Owen, dau of Daniel Owen, who recently died at the age of 96. They took up the occupation of farming which was very successful. In 1883 he sold his farm near McLean and retired from the pursuit. He bought and sold farm property extensively having owned 11 different farms. In 1884 he purchased 20 acres of land on Cortland Street and erected the present commodious and substantial residence which was his home until his death March 22, 1898. He is survived by wife and 2 sons Hartson and Frank. He was a self made man.
Fairview Poultry is the name by which the Blanchard place is known. The oldest Hartson, has conducted a large and successful poultry business for some time. Single white comb leghorns were carefully selected and chosen for superior laying qualities, large size and vigor, large number of eggs for hatching and breeding of stock and shipping to all parts of the country. The major part of the business was the production of fancy market eggs shipped 3 times a week to New York City and guaranteed newly laid.
