Genevieve Cote is the first of four wives for Jean Le Vesque.
The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriges, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 724,091 people via interlocking
marriages.
My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.

! Not long after his marriage, he removed to Epsom, where he and his
cousin Samuel had bought land some years before. He there served two
years as selectman, and filled other town offices. About 1762 he moved
to Chester, and thence, probably in 1765, to Chichester. In 1779 he
removed to Parsonsfield, Me., and then, in the year 1781 it is said, he and
his sons Meshack and Stephen became the first settlers of what is now
Porter, Maine. For this service they received each a hundred-acre lot of
land. That which John Libby received is now owned by Wm. T. Taylor. He
died about the year 1804, and his wife about the same time. They were
buried a few rods westerly from their house.

He is credited with being the first settlerof Porter, ME.
He .... , was living in Pittsfield, N. H. in 1781, and in that year settled in Porter.
For settling in that town before 1 Jan 1784, he received one of four 100-acre lots reserved for such settlers. In 1792, he sold this to David Moulton, and bought the lot of his brother Stephen. There he lived until his death, ....

!Note: Also had 2 infants died at birth 1819/1820 in #3M.
!Stephen is listed as one of the first settlers of Porter, ME in 1782 See
the account under John Libby [820] in generation 10 of how in the spring
of 1782, Stephen, his brother Meshach and his parents made the move
from Pittsfiled, NJ to the wilderness that was to become the town of
Porter. After having built his cabin for his new home in Maine (now the
town of Porter), Stephen returned to Pittsfield, NH either in the fall of
1782 or the spring of 1783 when he soon after married first Mary
Knowles [411] in 1783. Their first child, James was born in Pittsfield
the next year. They must have returned to Porter soon after as their
second child, Daniel, was born in Porter. A list has survived showing
that Mary and her children, James, John, Mary, Jemima and Sally attended
the Baptist church, which was organized in the southern part of Porter in
1807 or 07. Mary died in October 1816 in Porter, ME.
Stephen married second, Nancy Mathews (born December 13, 1788) on
January 9, 1817. Nancy was the daughter of Francis and Lydia (Matthews)
Matthews. Nancy died January 9, 1818. On March 17, 1818, Stephen
married third her sister, Sally Mathews (bor n May 13/17, 1793). In 1804
Stephen started to build a sawmill on Fox Brook about a half a mile
above the upper Spectacle Pond completing it in 1805. For years the mill
did a thriving business. Stephen was an industrious person. He owned
large tracts of timber.
He took an active part in the construction of the Old Porter meeting
House. One contemporary, Elias Gould, remembers the many trips that he
and his father made with a yoke of oxen hauling "pumpkin" pine boards
from Stephen' Libby's sawmill to the place on John Libbys lot where the
meeting house was under construction. He related an instance that
occurred at the "raising" of the framework of the building. This
particular circumstance is of interest because of the poise and courage
required for its performance. It was an old custom for someone, who had
steady nerves, to walk the entire length of the ridgepole ("running pole"),
then back again - this was the outstanding feature of the "frame-raising
ceremony." And who, do you think, performed this feat at the meeting
house? Why, our old friend, Stephen Libby - known among the old settlers
as "Leftenant" Libby! He was 61 years of age then! (and reached the ripe
old age of ninety-two years).
Stephen died on October 25, 1855, in Porter, Oxford, ME and is buried in
the Brownfield Road Burial-Ground (his third wife Sally Mathews who
died on December 16, 1866, probably lies beneath the unmarked stone
next to Sephen's).

Taken from "Genealogy of Captain John Locke of New Hampshire"
by Arthur H. Locke, A.M.
"Captain John Locke was probably baptized in London, England, Sept. 16, 1627, married about 1652, Elizabeth, daughter of William and Jane Berry, and was killed by the Indians Aug. 26, 1696, in Rye, NH. Elizabeth the widow was living in 1708 when the estate was settled and the children given below shared in its distribution. Several old papers prepared by descendents born about 1735, give the entire family, and in the following order. As first names only were given it is impossible to determine whether the girls were married, or to whom married at that time (1708) but we know nearly all were."

" John Locke, came from Yorkshire, England, about 1644, and settled first at
Dover, N.H., where he had a right of land. He moved to what is known as Fort Point, in Newcastle, and about 1652 he married Elizabeth Berry, daughter of John Berry, who was probably the first settler at a place called Sandy Beach, now Rye. A few years later, Mr. Locke moved to Sagamore Creek, and from there to a neck of land in Rye called Joscelyn's Neck, Locke's Neck until 1876, and now called Straw's Point. John Locke was killed by Indians, August 26, 1696, while he was reaping grain in his field, but two sons who were with him hid and escaped. It is said Captain Locke, after being shot, struck one of the Indians with his sickle and partly cut off his nose. He was by trade a house carpenter."

John Goodwin Locke
John Locke, of Hampton, N.H. Tradition says that John Locke came from Yorkshire, England in 1644, (some accounts say 1638), and "first settled at Dover in New Hampshire where he owned a right of land; that from thence he moved to what is known as Fort Point, in New Castle, and about 1652 married Elizabeth, the daughter of William Berry (who was probably the first settler of Hampton) at a place called Sandy Beach, now Rye.
From New Castle, Mr. Locke moved to Sagamore Creek, where he resided till 1655, when he went to Hampton. After a thorough search of the ancient records at Dover, Portsmouth and Hampton, I have come to the conclusion that so far dates at least are concerned, that full reliance cannot be placed upon the above tradition. There is no record evidence that Mr. Locke ever resided at or had a "right of land" at Dover; his name is not found among the early settlers. The first notice I find of him is in the Portsmouth records, viz:_
"And likewise John Locke is to have a house lott (lot) between John Jackson's and William Cotten's rails, the lott eight acres. At the town meeting held the first day of Januarie (January), 1656."
At a town meeting Jany. 22, 1660, "John Locke having eight acres to have eight more;" and the same year there was laid out to him eight acres from Stoney Brook towards John Jones, 24 pole wide and 40 pole back into the woods, South West line. This was prob. the eight acres granted Jan 22, 1660. John Locke, of Portsmouth, Carpenter, and wife Elizabeth, sold James Drew a new dwelling-house and eight acres to William (Collins?) "dividend land in Portsmouth." The latter sale was undoubtedly after he located himself on what was a "disputed territory", being claimed on the one side by Portsmouth of New Castle, and on the other side by Hampton. The little knowledge I have of the locations at Rye and Hampton, does not enable me to speak very decidedly about the lands first granted him; but Thomas J. Parsons, Esq. of Rye, to whom I am greatly indebted for the statistics of the family and decendents of John Locke says that he has no doubt but what the second grant of "8 acres," was in the vicinity of Locke's Neck. My want of knowledge forbids of my going further into the details. I am pretty well satisfied he did not move to Josscelyn's Neck until about 1665 or 66.
At a town meeting in Portsmouth, Mh. 8, 1665-6, he subscribed 5s for Mr. Moody (the minister,) and the same year Capt. Locke was fined 5, whether shillings or pounds, as for what was not stated, - "Oct. 26, 1671, a noate drawne on Hen. Dering, Constable, to pay John Locke 12s." Being a carpenter, he would be likely to be called upon to do work out of the town where he then resided, (Hampton).
The present age is noted for claiming for individuals the paternity of various measures and inventions, and perhaps it would be well to claim for Capt. Locke the credit of being the first "squatter." It appears by the town of Hampton, that he "sat down on the common lands at Josselyn's Neck," and began clearing a farm without saying "by your leave," and as the inhabitants claimed a right of saying who should be citizens of the town, they were rather indignant at his independence, and May 24, 1666(1666-7?) they chose a committee to pull up his fence; and Mh.12, 1667, "to warn him to desist from improving the town's land, and to notify him that the town is displeased with his building there." Complaint was made against him as a trespasser," and he was warned to appear at the meeting and give an account of himself. On the 8(28) of March, 1667 (1667-8?) the town voted as follows, viz, "Upon the motion of John Locke, who desireta to yield himself to the town of Hampton as an inhabitant here amongst us, being already settled upon Josselyn's Neck in Hampton bounds, the towne hath accepted of ye said John Locke for an inhabitant accordingly," and thus the "squatter" became transformed into an "inhabitant," and here he continued to reside the rest of his days. "John Locke, Senr. was killed by the Heathen in his lot at work upon, Aug 26, 1696,"
[Hampton Town Rec.] I extract from the Rev. Huntington Porter's discourse. delivered at Rye, Jan. 1,1801, the following: In the year 1694, [it should be 1696] a person by the name of John Locke being at the Neck, was ambushed and killed by them (i.e. the Indians) as he reaped the grain in his field; against whom it seems they had some time before, formed a particular grudge, on account of his having been very active against them and instrumental in defeating them in several of attempts to destroy the inhabitants on the sea-coast; and who, at this time, came eight in number, with an express design, (as appeared afterwards,) to avenge themselves in his death; and having accomplished their bloody purpose, returned again without any other material damage."
Another account says that a boy was with him, who secreted himself under some bundles of grain and escaped, and that Capt. Locke, after being shot, struck one of the Indians with his sickle, and partly cut off his nose.
"Josselyn's Neck" since that time has been known by the name of "Lockes Neck." He is supposed to have been 70 years old at the time of his death, although one account says 78 -- the first is probably the most correct.

Henry Berry I, born 1635 in Lancaster County, Virgina (Source: Lila Wylie, waiting on documentation.); died January 1676/77 in Old Rappanhonock County, Virginia (Source: Bennie R Lane awaiting documentation.). He was the son of 2. William Berry and 3. Jane Locke. He married (1) Ann Saunders 1649 in Virginia.
Notes for Henry Berry I:
NOTES: King george County, Virginia. The main home place of the Berry family.
Bounded on the north by the Potpmac River and on the south by the Rappahannock River, King George County was settled in the late 1600's along the banks of the two rivers. The county was formed from Richmond County in 1720 and renamed in honor of King George I of England.
In 1776 the present boundaries of the county were established. Prior to that date, King George County included George washington's boyhood home at Ferry Farm and the site of the legendary cherry tree incident.
In 1752 President James Madison was born in the "Belle Grove" mansion area of King George. Madison was a celebrated statesman whos work in the Continental Congress earned him the title "Father of the Constitution" He would go on to become the nations fourth President.
King George County played an important role in the Civil War. On June 27, 1861 Confederate soldiers defending Mathias Point seccessfully repelled an attack led by Thomas Freeborn. In the battle, Commander James H. Ward, USN, sufferd fatal wounds and became the first navel officer to die in the war.
After the assanation of President Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth reportedly made his escape through King George County. He passed through the county toward Port Royal, where he later died in the Garrett barn.
Henry Berry, son of William reportedly immigrated to America in 1650 to Virginia. There was however a William Berry found in the 1624 census of the Jamestown Colony. William lived in the Virginia Colony 96. Could there be a connection???
Henry reportedly came to America in 1650. Went to Virginia in 1656 in a group led by R. Lawson. The family lived on Occupacia creek in what is now Essex County. Henry Berry's will of March 30, 1672, Old Rappahannock, Virginia.
