BENJAMIN LIBBY, born in Scarborough, Sept. 1762; married, first, 4 July 1782, ELIZABETH HUNNEWELL, 7-1-5-1; (died Dec. 1813); second, HANNAH MOODY, daughter of Scribner Moody of Whitefield.
He served all through the Revolution. After his marriage, he settled on Dutton Hill, in the town of Gray, on the road leading to Windham. Soon after the birth of his eleventh child, he removed further into the wilderness, and settled in Canaan, where he lived until after the death of his first wife. During that time he served as quartermaster in the war of 1812. After his second marriage, he lived in Whitefield, and there died, 2 Aug. 1831. His widow died in Augusta, 25 Nov. 1872

1 Humphrey, b. 29 Oct. 1783; m. Jan. 1817, Harriet McCausland. He
was a farmer in Canaan. He was drowned while driving logs,
May 1832. His widow died in Pittsfield, Sept. 1878. Only child:
1 John. He was in government employ during the late war,
and died in New Orleans, La., in the winter of 1865. He left
a wife and child in New Hampshire.

!John Libby came to Maine as a fisherman in the employ of Robert
Trelawny, a Plymouth merchant who held a large grant of coast land at
Cape Elizabeth where, on Richmond Island, he had established an active
fishing industry. John came over on the Hercules" which brought the
family of John Winter, Trelawny's Maine manager, and many other
fishermen and servants and arrived in port at Richmond Island on 13
February 1636/7, leaving his wife in England (he sent for her to join him here about 1640.
It is suspected that John came from the area of Cornwall and that he
was born about 1614 even though in 1677 he signed a petition to the
governor and council of Massachusetts Bay stating that he was then
seventy-five years of age. It seems more likely that he exaggerated his
age in an appeal for sympathy and assistance.
In the history of Scarborough, he is said to have been "for many years
one of the town's principal planters." He was constable
in 1664 and his name stands first of the four selectmen in a town grant
bearing date 1669. In King's Phillip's war (1675) he lost
everything he had except his plantation. Captain Joshua Scattow's diary
says; "Eight of nine deserted houses belonging to Libby
and his children "were burned by the Indians 7 September, 1675."

!John was a soldier in Philip's War. In aug. 1668 he bought 50 acres
adjoining his father's property. He was a selectman in Scarborough in
1669, 1673-74, 1684 and 1688. John's estate on 28 Nov. 1681 consisted
of 50 acres of land, 12 acres of marsh, 1 cow, 2 mares and 1 sheep.
!The settlement at Black Point was still in poor condition when the
Indians and French attacked Fort Loyal on Casco Neck in
May 1690. After a seige of five days the fort surrendered and the
inhabitants of Scarborough without waiting to be attacked
themselves left their homes and moved to safer localitites. John and his
family moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire at this
time and never returned to Scarsborough. In Portsmouth as a miller, he
and his sons built and ran the grist mill on the Vaughan
privilage.

!He was selectman of Scarborough in 1686. In 1690 he fled, with his
father-in-law, to Lynn, Moss. He was one of the company which
first attempted to re-settle their possessions in 1703. Tradition has it that
they came from Lynn in a sloop, and built a garrison on Prout's Neck,
which they successfully defended from a force of fire hundred French
and Indians. Henry Libbv and his sons were at the first town meeting, in 1730. He was chosen to go and show the old highways to the selectmen. In September, 1728, he became a member of the Congregational church at Black Point, which had just been organized under the pastoral charge of t.he Rev. William Tompson. His house stood on the lot which was recently added to the south side of the Black Point burying-ground, and was afterward occupied by his eldest son.

!Note: Anthony was a carpenter and a soldier in King Philip's War. In 1681
he was on a committee to procure timber for building the Scarborough
fort. and in in 1682 moved to Falmouth, then in 1685 moved to Hampton.
He and Sarah lived in that part of Hampton which later became Rye or
Greenland.

"As has already been told, he went to Portsmouth in 1690, and thence to
Kitteyr, in the winter of 1699-1700. He built his house close by the one
now occupied by Thomas Adlington. It was built with hewn timber, and
the upper story projected over the lower one for protection against the
Indians. In that house he lived until his death. It was taken down in the
early part of this [the 19th] century, and the present one built.
!Some time before the second organization of the town of Scarborough,
he, with Roger Deering, John Libby, 1-1, and Roger Hunnewell, went down
to Black Point and built a sawmill on Nonesuch River, a short distance
above the present Congregational church. His interest in that mill he
afterward gave to his three sons, William, John and Andrew, and it is
doubtful if he ran the mill himself longer than a very short time. He died
in March, 1740-1, leaving his homestead to his son Samuel. His widow
died two or three years later. In the family burying-ground lie Matthew
Libby and his wife and five generations of their descendants, with
nothing but rough stones to mark their graves."

!BIOGRAPHY: Daniel Carter Libby, In 1690 he fled with his wife's
relations to Marblehead to avoid the Indians at war, where he was a
carter. In his deposition he reported that about 1693 he moved into Col.
Norton's home and lived there about 18 years. In 1731 he and his wife
(Mary Ashton, married 23 Feb. 1687) and grand children were warned
from Beverly, and she (or her daughter) at times visited her Norton
cousins in Manchester; but 13 Sept. 1735 both were back in Marblehead,
she still lived there in 1737.

General Notes: Husband - John Libby Capt
Libby, VOL I, pgs. 42 & 43 - Captain John Libby accompanied his father from Lynn, MA and
settled on a farm in Scarsborough. He was a land surveyor and
lieutenant in Captain George Berry' s Company, 1745 and after
the death of his cousin, Capt. John Libby, he acquired the
title and kept it the rest of his life. He was drowned during
a fishing trip in the Nonesuch River. The boat was upset and
although an expert swimmer, he never rose. The other two
passengers escaped and there were suspicions of foul play at
the time.

It appears from the records of this office that Robert Evans enlisted,
place not stated, February 7, 1814, for the war, served as corporal in
Capt. Poland's Company, 34th United States Infantry, and died October
12, 1814.
He was survived by five minor children: Mary, Robert, Sally, Frederick
and Josiah Evans, of Cumberland County, Maine.
On October, 17, 1817, Certificate No. 237 for five year's half pay was
issued in behalf of the soldier's children named above. Said certificate
was issued to Lois Evans as guardian of the children, the payment to
begin February 17, 1815. No relationship of the above named Lois Evans
to the children of the soldier, Robert Evans, was shown.

This is from the May 8, 1883 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette in the "Personal Points" column:
"On Friday, Lucius H. Libby received a telegram from George Q. Richmond of Pueblo, Colorado, stating that Frank C. Libby, his brother, had dropped dead from heart disease that afternoon in that city. Mr. Libby went west four years ago, and at the time of his death was engineer in a mine. He was a son of the late Joseph C. Libby. A wife and two children survive him who are in this city. His age was 38 (?). The remains will not be brought home. Deceased was a member of the Knights of Honor, and his widow will receive the benefit of $200."
