In the York Genealogy the date of her birth is given as Sept. 9, 1751. She died in Bridgewater, NY, at the home of her daughter Nancy, with whom she made her home after the death of her husband. The emigrated from Stonington, Conn., to Brookfield, NY, during the last decade of the eighteenth century, but the precise date is not known with certainty.
They had already a considerable family, and some of them are said to have preceded their parents to New York. It is thought that their permanent removal was in the year 1800, when they came with the remainder of their family and settled in Beaver Creek Valley, about two miles south of the village of Brookfield. On his coming he occupied a log house standing by some rocks in a meadow east of the road running through it, and near the south line of the farm north of the Chauncey Hibbard place. Later he lived and died in a frame house on the hill forty or fifty rods south. Not long after their settlement in Brookfield, Keturah York made a journey on horseback to Utica for household supplies, bringing back in her saddlebags, among other, a set of dishes, some pieces of which are still treasured by her descendants. John York had ten children and fifty-five grandchildren.

He was the first member of the family of his parents to remove to Brookfield, NY. He was the first settler in what became distinctively to the York settlement on both sides of Beaver Creek about two miles south of the village of Brookfield. His log house, the first dwelling in its locality, between the foot of the Chauncey Hibbard hill and the creek, is described in the town records, under date of Oct. 20, 1797, as on the "road that goes from James Satterlee's to John York's," being on the west side of the present highway. In 1811-1812 he had built a frame house by the brookside near the falls some distance west of Beaver Creek, afterwards known as the Ichabod York, and later as Samual Langworthy, place. This house he never occupied. He was found dead by the bridge, where he seem to have fallen as he was going homeward from his yet unfinished house, having died from the injury or from the exposure to the wintry cold. He was a active, engertic, public-spirited man, early serving as a town officer. His widow afterwards married Luther Brown, removing later to Harmoney, Chautauqua Co., NY, where she died at the home of her daughter Patty.

He came to Brookfield, NY, with his brother John. Before his marriage he secured the possession of the house which was his home until his death, and in which his family of one son and thirteen daughters was born. This is on the west side of Beaver Creek, two and one half miles south of Brookfield. His wife was the daughter of Wiot Hinkley, on of the little company coming to Brookfield with John York in 1794. In the organization of the First Day Baptist Church in Brookfield, Thomas was one of the signers of the covenant.

He made his first visit to Brookfield, NY, in company with his brothers John and Thomas in 1795. He returned to Connecticut, but removed permanently to Brookfield in 1797. He began housekeeping in the house first built by his father. Here his eldest child was born. About 1807 he removed to the plateau about midway east and west between and road running south from the Waterman School-house and the Palmiter road to a house then standing on the road running from "james Satterlee's to John York's". Later he acquired the additional line of lots extending to the Palmiter road, including the house then occupied by Wheaton Williams. In this house on the hill nearly all his children were born. Here hannah died

General Notes: Husband - Nathaniel Buck
In the Autumn of 1776, according to tradition, a party of hunters from New Gloucester, Maine consiting of Abijah and Nathaniel Buck, Thomas Allen and John Brown with perhaps others, came into what is now the town of Buckfield, for the secondary purpose of procuring game in which the region abounded, but primarily to select lots for a permanent settlement.[p. 23]
.
Nathaniel Buck, born about 1750 was a younger brother of Abijah Buck. He was a man of great physical strength and endurance, and noted for being an expert hunter and skilled in wood craft.
In after years he was called a "housewright" which occupation claimed nearly all his attention. He was an industrious and thrifty man and withal a good citizen.[p. 24]
.
Later in the same month, [March, 1777] Nathaniel Buck moved his family into the township. His children numbered three. The Youngest was Nathaniel, Jr., who was about the same age as the Allen child. With this family came John Brown. In September of this year was born in the family of Thomas Allen, the first child in the little settlement. It was a girl, who was named Mollie for her aunt, Mrs. Nathaniel Buck. What crops they raised, or how these three families fared the first year, cannot now be told. It must have been a period of great hardship and toil. The following, however, is the only incident of actual suffering for food, that has come down to us: They nearly got out of provisions late in the Autumn, at about the time of the fall of the first snows, and Abijah Buck and two others started with the ox-team for New Gloucester, leaving one man (tradition says Nathaniel Buck) behind, to take care of the women and children. For better protection all went to Abijah Buck's, to stay till the men should return. For all the families there was but half a bushel of corn meal. Abijah Buck had a small heifer which gave only three pints of milk a day. It was expected that the one left behind could supply them with sufficient meat with his gun to keep them from actual starvation, with the milk and corn bread, for the three days the men were expected to be away. In the night after the men had gone, a cold and violent snow storm came on, which lasted several days, followed by a high wind which piled the snow into huge drifts. Fearing that something might befall the man left with the women and children, in his weakened condition and that they would be left without protection, they would not let him go into the forest in search of food. There were eight children to feed, and the other ones ate but little, lest they should deprive the children of what was necessary to keep them from starvation. Nathaniel Buck became so weak that he staggered as he went about the work he must of necessity do. The men were gone seven days, and during two days of this time there was nothing to eat but the milk and this was given all to the children. The men knowing the urgent necessity of their return, raised a crew and with their ox-teams broke through the snows drifts to the settlement. When they at last appeared, with food and provisions, the joy and relief of these nearly famished people can better be imagined than described. [p. 30-31]
The year 1778 as well as 1777, must have been one of privation and perhaps of some suffering. We are told of frequent journeys to New Gloucester for provisions, and of the settlers carrying home on their backs large loads of corn and rye meal, salt, and various other articles. On one occasion, Nathaniel Buck is said to have brought from New Gloucester, on his back, three bushels of meal and a bag of salt. A map of the township made in 1795, gives the distance from the center of the town to the New Gloucester court house as twenty-five miles, but by the way the settlers went and came, it must have been much farther. It is no wonder, although of fabulous strength -- he is said to have been the strongest man physically ever in the township or town -- that Nathaniel got very tired before reaching the settlement, and fearing if he laid down his load, that he should not be able to place it upon his shoulders again, to obtain a little rest and take a breath he occasionally leaned against the trees by the side of the path. [p. 32]
.
The settlers were very industrious and their little clearings steadily broadened and widened year by year and here again the tales of Nathaniel Buck's capacity for handling the trunks of trees and limbs of large trees and piling them together for burning, overshadow all others. Piles of logs were often seen in his clearing which required cattle or several men to move in the openings of the other settlers. He was a veritable Sampson among his associates, and it is to be presumed that no one of them cared to lay hands on him in anger. Jacob Leonard once said in speaking of him, that his hands and limbs were like a giant's.
It is related, as a remarkable fact, that while Nathaniel Buck was clearing his land, an apple tree was found growing wild. It was regarded as a good omen of his future thrift and prosperity and was carefully preserved.[p. 33]

General Notes: Wife - Mary Brown
!Mary Brown's father, John Brown settled in Buckfield along with Nathaniel Buck and his family. According to the "History of Buckfield", he was father-in-law to Nathaniel Buck and Thomas Allen. Thomas Allen and Abijah Buck were the first to settle in Buckfield. Thomas married Abigail Brown, who is the only other child of John Brown mentioned in the book.
.
Mrs Mary Buck, widow of Nathaniel Buck, died on the 14th day of November (1828) at the age of 73, "leaving 6 children, 69 grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren." Hers was the third family to settle in the township. "She cheerfully met all hardships, nor did fatigue ever prevent her from waiting on the weary traveller

General Notes: Child - Daniel Buck
!An incident occurred at this time which portrays some of the vicissitudes of border exploration. Messrs. Daniel Bullen and James Holmes, land owners, visited the township, and went out with others better aquainted with the lay of the land, to see the lots owned by them. As Mr. Bullen could not keep pace with the party, they advised him to remain at the corner of the lot, while they pushed on to other parts of it, and then they would come back and conduct him out. In the solitude of the forest, the time seemed long to the old gentleman. Confidant that he could find his way back to the settlement, he started, got bewildered, and wandered off toward Sebec Lake. Finding himself fairly lost, he lifted up his voice, which his companions heard and answered, but being deaf, he could not hear them. They kindled fires to show their way back, as darkness was coming on, and made their way on by the sound, but he got into a thick swamp, and could not be heard. So they returned, giving up all hope of rescue till morning. At length the arose, and the wanderer, sufficiently satisfied with land-looking alone, took the silvery orb of night for his guide, and came out safely to Mr. Daniel Buck's habitation.
It seems that some of the Messrs. Bucks from Buckfield, were by that time settled here. There were four brothers, --Nathaniel, Daniel, William, and Moses, -- among the early settlers of this town, and some of their descendants are still residing here. William began on the west half of the Capt. Chamberlain farm, and after struggling along some eight or ten years, sold out to him. [History Of Piscataquis County, Maine by Rev. Amasa Loring, (Portland, Me. Hoyt, Eogg & Donham, 1880), Chap. 13 "Foxcroft", Page 115-6]
General Notes: Child - Benjamin Buck
According to the History of Buckfield he settled in Foxcroft. According to "Old Foxcroft" it was Benjamin son of Nathaniel II.
!Benjamin Thomas Buck b. May 7, 1795: m. Apr. 14, 1825- Almira Todd of Douglas Parish N. B. He commenced making his own way as a millwright in New Brunswick. There he met Miss Todd and they were married. Coming back to Maine he purchased property at Buck's Cove, Sebec Lake, (named for him) and erected a mill and home. This did not prove a paying proposition and Mr. Buck returned to Foxcroft, purchasing a part of his father's farm; but flattering inducements were offered him to join a partnership under the name, Vaughan, Buck and the Chamberlains and he moved to the village. That mill was carried away by the freshet of 1857;and the Sash and Blind Factory of Buck and Brown was erected on the old site. Mr. Buck resided in Dover, in the house now owned by Sanger Coburn. Disposing of that house to Dr. J. W. Cook, he purchased the present Annis house and moved back to "old Foxcroft." Benjamin Buck was one of our sterling citizens, exemplary in every phase of life. A deacon of the Foxcroft and Dover Baptist Church from 1843-1875. One of the thirteen charter members 1842. He d. at his residence in Foxcroft, Nov. 21, 1875. Mrs. Buck d. in Foxcroft June 20, 1882. Death of an Old Resident.
After a brief illness death came to Flora McDougall, widow of the late
Neil Keith, last Thursday at the home of her son, Mr. Angus Keith, lot
20, con. 3, Esquesing. Mrs. Keith was seventy-six years of age. Her
husband pre-deceased her some twelve years ago. She came from
Argyleshire, Scotland, with her father's family in 1842, and was ever
since a resident of Esquesing. She was the mother of a large family, five
sons and seven daughters, of whom the following survive: Duncan, on the
homestead, Donald, at Dauphin, Man., Neil, at Winnipeg, and Angus, in
Esquesing; Mrs. George Douglas, Mrs. George Agnew, Mrs. Jos. Anderson and
Mrs. George Davidson, Hartney, Man., Mrs. Duncan Kennedy, Hannah, North
Dakota, and Mrs. Thomas Hyde, Esquesing. Mrs. Keith was a member of the
Presbyterian Church, and the funeral service on Saturday afternoon was
conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. A. Macpherson.

McDougall, Flora - Jean Ammeter [decendants of NEIL KEITH & FLORA
McDOUGALL]
Flora was born in the Parish of Bowmore, the Isle of Islay, Scotland.
It is not known at this time where or when Flora & Neil were married.
Since it is recorded that she came with her father's family in 1843 to
Canada, there must be some connection to the other McDougall's in the
area. They are listed in the church records and are buried in the same
area of the Fairview Cemetery. Future research will be done.

In May 1690, he and his brother Mark received permission and erected a saw mill on Walker's Creek. (From "Chronicles of the Haskell Family" by Ira J. Haskell, published by Ellis Ptinting Co., Lynn, MA.)
