If you would like your name and those of your living descendants to appear in this Family Tree, please let me know, and I'll try to include them on my next upload. Bare in mind that this is a hobby for me which I do take it serious, however, it is still a hobby. It is also a work in progress, and thus, subject to mistakes and errors, whether by typos or the data from other sources which may also be in error. Please contact me with any correction either via e-mail or in the "Post-em" notes for that individual at Roots.
Thanks,
Bob Wylie

If you would like your name and those of your living descendants to appear in this Family Tree, please let me know, and I'll try to include them on my next upload. Bare in mind that this is a hobby for me which I do take it serious, however, it is still a hobby. It is also a work in progress, and thus, subject to mistakes and errors, whether by typos or the data from other sources which may also be in error. Please contact me with any correction either via e-mail or in the "Post-em" notes for that individual at Roots.
Thanks,

He was a private in the Puerto Rican campaign, and then on the Mexican border in the El Paso district as lieutenant of machine guns 16th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. From a letter from Faith Axman, 26 August 2007, recounting stories told at a Newell family reunion the weekend before Bradford:
"Another story Mary Hope [Powell King] told was that Lewis Newell wanted to serve in WWII, but his hair was white by then and he was too old. He dyed his hair and mustache, but they still wouldn't take him. He did serve in Washington DC with the State Dept.(?) Mary Lewis Newell moved to State College when Aunt Margie started college and they lived in a rental until the first five girls were through college. Then she followed Aunt Mary Lew wherever she attended secretarial school. She was determined that all of her girls would attend college, since she had been married at sixteen and never had the opportunity."

NEWELL COLLECTION
Mss 66 4 linear feet
The Newell Collection is primarily the work of Frederick Haynes Newell (1862-1932), of Washington, D.C. A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he worked as a Colorado gold mine operator before joining the U.S. Geological Survey. He became chief of the U.S. Reclamation Service in 1907, and his work included the construction of several major dams in the West. For further biographical detail, see Newell's notice in the Dictionary of American Biography.
Mr. Newell's genealogical interests led him to attempt a definitive work on his family. Although he appears to have worked on it from 1910 to 1931, nothing was ever published. The entire collection passed to his son John M. Newell (1904-1971), of West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Following the latter’s death, his wife, Hulda C. Newell, donated the accumulated material to the Society in 1983.
The personal manuscripts include both family and professional papers. Among these are papers of Artemas Newell (1807-1871), a lawyer in Brookline, [117] Massachusetts; Augustus W. Newell (1832-1919), a merchant and speculator in Bradford, Pennsylvania; his son, Frederick H. Newell; and Frederick’s son, John M. Newell. The collection also contains a large number of diaries, household accounts, and historical documents relating to family members, both men and women. Among the older documents is a 17th century will and estate inventory, a list of Dorchester, Massachusetts marriages in 1777, and commissions signed by Thomas Mifflin and John Hancock.
The collection is divided into five sub-groups. Subgroup I contains genealogies, autobiographies, notes, correspondence, etc., pertaining to the Newell and allied families, 1535-1975.
Sub-group II contains correspondence, diaries, legal documents, etc., of the Newell and allied families, 1694-1972.
Sub-group III contains notes, lists and correspondence concerning the existence and disposition of family books and manuscripts, 1912-1983.
Sub-group IV contains data concerning Newell properties in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C.
Sub-group V contains portraits of family members and views of places of family interest, 1881-1931.

Seventy-eight Year-old Bell is Fraught with early Bradford History
Augustus W. Newell--a pioneer with nerve enough to take over a failing railroad and to erect a school building after others were afraid to take the contract--used the bell for a year and a half on his home-made passenger engine running between Carrollton and Bradford (Pennsylvania) as early as 1856 then placed it in the belfry of the building he erected as one of Bradford's first schools.
He came here in 1852 to work for his uncle, Daniel Kingsbury, the 20 year-old Augustus Newell surveyed and plotted land for his uncle until 1856 when the newly chartered Buffalo and Bradford Railroad Company announced plans to build a line from Erie junction (now Carrollton) to the semi-bituminous coal lands of Lafayette Township, McKean County. At that time it was believed this territory was rich in coal deposits (the discovery of oil wealth came considerably later and Daniel Kingsbury himself, who owned extensive holdings in the county, was firm in his belief that coal was to be the hope for whatever prosperity this district was to enjoy. Mr. Kingsbury was president, projector and principal stockholder in the new [rail]road and his nephew a member of the engineering corps under Frank Williams, chief engineer.
The survey for the line was started in the spring of 1856 from Carrollton to Bradford. Snow in the hemlock swamps, heavy down timber and dense underbrush made the work next to impossible. The young Mr. Newell humorously stated regarding his title as assistant engineer "in other words I did the work." This "work" consisted in setting every center stake and fixing every level between Carrollton and Bradford [12 miles].
Few Settlers Then
When the survey was being made there were but very few settlers in the valley, many of whom lived in log homes. Valley roads were next to impassable and the popular method of transportation was ox-drawn sledges in summer and winter alike.
John S. King, succeeding King and Loomis, as contractor, graded the [rail]road to Bradford and seven miles up West Branch. With the rails laid the new railroad was ready for business and the "Orange" was the first locomotive to travel the new line from the rolling plains of south-western New York to the forest-covered hills of McKean County. The crew on this first train included an engineer, a fireman, one or two brakeman and several conductors.
[Rail]Road goes in "Red"
But receipts fell short of expenses and after a time the [rail]road was abandoned. It was then that the young Augustus Newell who was never paid for his work on the [rail]road purchased a handcar and attempted to "make a living" in that way. He said of this venture "that was work."
Seeing a need for power of locomotion other than that supplied by his arms and back, Mr. Newell constructed what is probably the strangest locomotive in American railroad history. Taking a set of wheels and boxes from a gravel car, Mr. Newell constructed over them a wooden covered platform. He obtained a little 5-inch single cylinder engine, formerly used in drilling oil wells and placed this on the car after much difficulty. The engine was connected by a belt to a pulley on an axle of the car. Mr. Newell remarked "to the surprise of all I made it work and made it pay."
The bell, probably more to inform the populace that the train was in the neighborhood than for safety's sake was placed on the combination locomotive and passenger car.
Start Showing Profit
Ten dollars a day "and upwards" for a year and a half placed the line on a successful basis and attracted considerable attention, especially in the face of the failure of the former and "big" company.
Mr. Newell invited the superintendent of the Erie Railroad, Charles Minot, to ride his [rail]road and Mr. Minot was so impressed with the Carrolltown-Bradford line that he organized a syndicate, making Mr. Newell a director to operate the line with the young railroader running the [rail]road on shares. This continued for a year or more, until Mr. Newell's contract expired, when a Mr. Kerr took over the line with Joe Haggerty as engineer. The line finally was absorbed by the Erie which uses the old grade.
Erects New School
Out of the railroad business, Mr. Newell a few years later was prevailed upon to erect a school building which formed a part of the later Third Ward structure. On this early building Mr. Newell placed the bell from the locomotive on this district's first successful railroad.
Augustus W. Newell, central figure in this colorful chapter of Bradford history died March 25, 1919.

Augustus William Newell
Augustus W. Newell was born at Newton, Massachusetts on October 9, 1832 and the oldest of nine children. His ancestors in this country were among the first settlers of Massachusetts coming from England in 1642 [NOTE: Actually in 1620 aboard the Mayflower]. His great grandfathers were both soldiers in the American Revolution. Mr Newell attended school at Brookline, Mass. until 13 years of age, when he began to learn civil engineering and from that time he made his own way in the world. While studying his profession he clerked for two years in the office of his father (who was a magistrate) and while there acquired a knowledge for exactness. After leaving his father's office he was employed four years as clerk for different railroad companies. His uncle, Daniel Kingsbury, had bought the property of the United States Land Company, consisting of 200,000 acres of land in McKean and adjoining counties. When Mr. Newell was 20 years old he gave the money he had saved to his uncle to invest in the land in McKean County [Pennsylvania] and two years later he took up his residence in Bradford [Pennsylvania].
He was employed by the Buffalo, Bradford and Pittsburg Railroad Company when the line was built through Bradford. Then the company went into bankruptcy and stopped running their cars; he was unable to get his pay and he conceived the idea of hiring an engine and running the train himself [NOTE: See more detailed account in previous article]. Obtaining permission, he hired a man and together they mowed the track with old-fashion scythes from Bradford to Carrolltown, a distance of 12 miles. He then hired an engine and commenced railroading. He soon made enough to pay the company's indebtedness, and here was laid the foundation of his own future. The enterprise also proved beneficial to the city. What money he had accumulated he invested in lands and thus laid the foundation for the extensive real estate business he is now doing.
As Bradford became a great oil town and railroad center, he sold his land at a large advance on the purchase price. He still owns two or three hundred town lots and a large number of dwellings in the city. Mr. Newell, although not an aspirant for political honors, has served the city in various capacities. His knowledge of civil engineering enabled him to be of valuable service in organizing a system of water works and he served as a water commissioner for eight years. He has also been a School Director, and served as Postmaster of Bradford under Lincoln's administration. He was a Commissioner from the State of Pennsylvania appointed by Governor Beaver to the International Exposition at Paris. He is a member of the American Association of Engineers and accompanied its excursion to Europe in 1889, where the party was received under the auspices of the English and French engineers. Mr. Newell has been a member and Director of the Board of Trade since its formation and has always been foremost in civic affairs.

EARLY DAYS: For the many 'Round the Square readers who have indicated their preference for stories about the early days of railroading in this area, the column--over the never several days--will summarize the early history of the Erie's Bradford branch.
The Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad Co. was organized at the Tiffit House in Buffalo on Oct. 13, 1852. The first president was Orlando Allen. Aim of the firm was to build a railroad linking Buffalo with the coal fields of Northern Pennsylvania.
Contracts were let for grading a section between Ellicottville and the Tuna Valley--a distance of 50 miles--but the project was soon abandoned. Then in March of 1856, the Buffalo and Bradford Railroad Co. was chartered by the legislature of Pennsylvania with the plan to build a line from the York State line, the valley of Tuna Creek to the coal mines in Lafayette Township, with the privilege of constructing lateral lines in McKean, Elk and Clearfield Counties and to intersect with the Sunbury and Erie Railroad and the Allegheny Valley Railroad. The line was to be begun in 10 years.
Principal stockholder and president of the new company was Daniel Kingsbury who owned large tracts of what he believed were valuable coal lands in the section then a wilderness. Chief engineer was Frank Williams. Augustus W. Newell was a member of the engineering corps of the pioneer line and some of his observations of the building of the road will appear in tomorrow's column.

RAILROAD REVIEW: Yesterday 'Round the Square began a series of short notes for area history fans about the early days of what is now the Bradford branch of the Erie.
Augustus W. Newell, a member of the engineer corps of the old Buffalo and Bradford Railroad Co., tells in his memoirs of those early days:
"We commenced the survey very early in the Spring of 1856, the snow in the hemlock swamps, the heavy down timber, and dense underbrush rendering the work almost impossible. There were very few settlers, and of very little means, living in small log houses, except in the villages. The roads up the valley were almost impassable, and a bobsled drawn by a pair of oxen was a conveyance common in Summer as well as in Winter. I was assistant engineer; or, in other words, I did the work. Every centre stake and every level was set by me from Erie Junction, now Carrollton, to Bradford. Our first contractors were King and Loomis, and afterward John S. King, who graded the road to Bradford and seven miles up the West Branch."
"We got the rails laid to Bradford. The 'Orange' was the first locomotive. We had an engineer, fireman, express car, and one or two brakemen, and I think several conductors. The receipts did not pay for services on the road (and never did)."
But rails were to be useful and successful as time went by. More of the story will appear in a subsequent column.

RAILROADING SAGA: For the benefit of rail fans in this section 'Round the Square has been detailing the story of the early days of what is now the Bradford branch of the Erie.
The other day, the column began telling Augustus W. Newell's version of the engineering and track-laying work that started in the Spring of 1856. After the rails were laid to Bradford, Mr. Newell wrote, the trains were discontinued within a few weeks since expenses were greater than receipts.
Now, on with Mr. Newell's story:
"The road (this was the Buffalo and Bradford Railroad Co.) was abandoned for a time and briers and weeds grew up the whole length of it. I bought a hand-car and tried to make a living that way, and that was work. Then I took a set of wheels and boxes from a gravel car and made a covered platform car. Upon this, after much difficulty, I placed a little five-inch single-cylinder engine, formerly used in drilling oil wells; connecting it by a belt to pull a pulley on the axle. To the surprise of all, I made it work, and I made it pay. I ran this engine about one and a half years. I was 'busted,' a bankrupt, and mighty few friends: but $10 a day and upwards that I made running my train soon brought them back and brought the road into notice."
How Mr Newell's idea brought the roat to the attention of an Erie official and how some of that line's officials purchased it will be told in a subsequent column.

PAST TO PRESENT: Recently, 'Round the Square has been detailing some of the early history of the Bradford Branch of the Erie--a story that will be continued in tomorrow's column. A great deal of the story represents the actual quoes of Augustus W. Newell who was a leading member of the engineer corps.
Now a letter has come to the column from Mrs. Virginia Newell Gray. 9 Rosedale Ave., a grand-daughter of Mr. Newell.
She writes, in part:
"Thank you for writing about my grandfather, August W. Newell. It warmed my heart and flooded my memory with many precious childhood moments and stories."
"I always associated my grandfather especially, with a sumptuous Thanksgiving dinner, ater which six little girls flat on their very full 'tummies' would slide down the front hall stairs. Then when he thought we had had enough we all sat at the foot of the stairs and listened entranced while he worked the cuckoo clock around for us."
"The cuckoo long since has ceased to work but family memories are deep in one's heart."

STORY CLOSES: Here is the final chapter about the early days of what is now the Erie branch through here. It is the sequel to the late Augustus W. Newell's account which has been appearing in 'Round the Square.
In 1859, the Buffalo and Bradford Railroad and the Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad consolidated under the title of the Buffalo, Bradford and Pittsburgh Railroad Co. In 1863, the railroad then being built as far as the hamlet Littleton (now the city of Bradford), Samuel March, vicepresident of the Erie; John Arnott, Dorman B. Eaton, and others interested in the Erie management. believed there was a future in the wilderness railroad, and purchased it for a song from Daniel Kingsbury.
They extended the road to Buttsville, Pa., and leased the operating of it to Mr. Newell, the Erie furnishing the rolling stock. In 1866, the purchasers of the railroad, the expected developments in coal and mineral not having been made, and all the proprietors being directors of the Erie, disposed of the property by perpetual lease to the Erie. In 1873, the large purchase of coal lands in the region was made by the Erie, and in 1875, the Bradford region became the mecca of oil producers, and for ten years was the petroleum centre of the world.
The Bradford branch of the Erie at once became the most valuable collateral property the Erie had. Under the Jewett administration the railroad was extended to Johnsonburg; the great Kinzua Viaduct was built in 1882, and the railroad that was alone in an unbroken winderness a few years before became the main thoroughfare in a region populous and productive. It is now a division of the Erie (the Bradford Division).

!See notes for his wife. 'The Great Migration...' gives a list of the heirs of Thomas Prence who on 10 June 1676, through their attorney Josiah Winslow, sold to Constant Southworth, treasurer and agent of Plymouth Colony, 'all that our dwelling house, messuage or tenement' in Plymouth 'at a place commonly called Plain Dealing'. Among the names were Jonathan Sparrow and Hannah his wife, daughter of Thomas Prence. [Plymouth Colony Land Records 4:124] 'Boston Transcript Gen. Notes, Queries & Answers' of 16 May 1938 says he was son of Richard and Pandora Sparrow and his will is in 'Pope's Pioneers' probated 11 Oct 1674, age given 86. Other references given, Eastham Records, Anc. Landmarks of Plymouth, Mayflower Desc 14, Freeman Gen. and Foster Records by Stephen Foster. The will must be that of the father, Richard, as that age would make him born 1588, 40 years older than Hannah.

[Turner, Prettyman, York Family tree.FTW]
1790, Albany, New York census discloses him having been in Revolutionary War. Later moved to DeRuyter, Madison Cty; NE Cortland; S. Cazenovia & Woodstock. His will made in 1813, but inventory not taken until 1828. Ref 3-57; pps 30 & 43, VITAL RECORDS OF RI, Arnold,1636-1850; m. Lydia Enos, his first cousin, by Joseph Crandall, Justice. By 1790 census, he is in Stephentown, Albany Co., New York. This area in 1891 became Rensselaer Co., New York. There is a Zebulon Lewis, b. September 3, 1734; d. 1828 at age 94, who was a Private in a Rhode Island unit in the Revolutionary War in Col. John Topham's* regiment. His enrollment records are extant at the National Archives. The Roll Box number is 88 in the Mormon records. The DAR Patriot Index, Centennial Edition, Part II, copyright 1994 lists Zebulon Lewis, b. 9-3-1734 RI d. c 1828. M. (1) Lydia Enos (2) Mary York Pvt RI, on page 1797 at the bottom of the page. As for the NY census reference to the Revolutionary War, I have seen his name in the Mormon Church Genealogical ecords on the microfiche roll of that 1790 census at page 284, Stephentown, Albany Cty, New York along with James Lewis and David Lewis near the middle of the page. He seems to have had five children at home at that time along with his wife. I also have copies of his muster cards listing his service as Pvt. in Capt.
Joshua Babcock's Company in Col. John Topham's Rgmt. from July 6, 1778 enlistment through November 10, 1778; then the company taken over by Lieut. Andrew Stanton; the enlistment coming to an end abut February 20, 1779. These muster cards are all dated at Camp Tiverton, RI. The heading on these cards is printed with the words "...engaged in the Twelve Months Service of the United States from the 16th of March, 1778, to the 16th of March 1779." After Remarks' is written the words, "Comd Genl Cornals guard". It may be that the other muster cards are missing or were not recorded or that he did not serve a full 12 months.(DHL) In a book 'Rhode Island in the Colonial Wars' by Howard M. Chapin published by the Rhode Island Historical Society in 1918 and 1920, Zebulon is listed pg.95 as being in Capt. Green's Co. in 1757 and in Capt. Brown's Co. in 1758. These last two mentions were probably in the R.I. Militia for some brief
military encounter. These records were retreived by DHL from the National Archives in July 2000. In another book, 'Vital Record of Rhode Island; Revolutionary Rolls and Newspapers' by James N. Arnold, Narragansett Historical Publishing Company, Providence, R.I., 1901, page 205 lists "Lewis, Zebulon, private , Col. Topham's regiment, 1776; pay due L16 5 3."
NOTE
According to Cook: It is possible he had another marriage before he married Mary York. Served as a Private in the Revolutionary War. Inventory made in 1828, although Will was written 1813, so date of death may be 1826 or 1828 correctly. Both Zebulon Lewis and Jabez York were on the list of Dr. Aza Spaulding, Hopkintown, RI between October 1774 and March 1776. both were in Petersburg in 1778.
NOTE
Zebulon's marriage to Lydia Enos is noted in VITAL RECORD OF RHODE ISLAND, 1636=1850, James N. Arnold, Editor of the Narragansett Historical Register, Narragansett Historical Publishing Company, 1894, Vol. V, p. 30,43 in Westerly Marriages.
