Elizabeth was employed for a time in the Burness home in Lochlie as a servant, and that is where she and Robert Burns met. She returned to her home and husband March 1784 when the Burness family moved away to Mossgiel, but our poet must have paid her a visit in 1784 for a 'wee sleep-over'.

General Notes: Wife - Helen Anne Park
From THE BURNS ENCYCLOPAEDIA by Maurice Lindsay; 1959: Hutchinson & Co. (Publishers) Ltd., London, pp. 202-203:
PARK, Helen Anne
Niece of Mrs. Hyslop, who kept the Globe Tavern in Dumfries. Very little is known of her, and nothing after the birth of her daughter by Burns. She was Burns's "Anna of the gowden locks" and the inspiration of his 'Yesteen, I had a pint of wine' - the splendid lovesong Burns considered his best. Anna gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, according to Chambers, in Leith, on 31 March, 1791. Nine days later, Jean Armour presented Burns with a son, William Nicol. Showing admirable tolerance, Jean brought up the child, Elizabeth, as one of her own family. (See PARK, Elizabeth).
Burns's relationship with Anna has usually been supposed to have been purely physical, and there is very little evidence of any sort about their association. One tradition alleges that she "had other pretty ways to render herself agreeable to the customers at the inn than the serving of wine". Nothing is known of her later life. De Lancey Ferguson says she died in giving birth to Elizabeth, while another tradition alleges that she obtained a position as a domestic servant in Leith or Edinburgh, where she married a soldier, and died in giving birth to his child.

Was John Greenshields the name of the "soldier" she later married in Leith or Edinburgh mentioned above? Does anyone have any evidence either way? Please email me at: updike58@sasktel.net

From THE BURNS ENCYCLOPAEDIA by Maurice Lindsay; 1959: Hutchinson & Co. (Publishers) Ltd., London, p. 202:
PARK, or Burns, Elizabeth (1791-1873)
Illegitimate daughter of Burns and Anna Park. When she was twenty-one, she received the sum of 200 pounds from the fund raised by her father's admirers.
According to an article in the BURNS CHRONICLE of 1916, Betty Burns, as she was known, married Private John Thomson of the Stirlingshire Militia, in 1808. The next day the regiment was ordered to Berwick-on-Tweed, and remained there for almost a year. On its being moved again, Thomson sent his wife to his parents in Pollokshaws, Glasgow, to where he returned on leaving the Militia in 1814. Thomson took up the trade of handloom weaving, and he and his wife both remained in Pollokshaws until their deaths - Thomson's in 1869, and Betty Burns's in 1873 at Crossmyloof. They are both buried in the old burgher churchyard in Pollokshaws once called the Vennel.
Of their fairly numerous family, their second son, Robert Burns Thomson, was a versifier, and his song 'My Daddy's Awa' at the War' was popular during the Crimean War. He was proud of his descent, but made no attempt to "cash in" on his grandfather's name, by publishing his poems in book form. After learning the trade of handloom weaving, he became a power-loom tenter, and was eventually appointed manager of Messrs. Scott's factory in the east end of Glasgow. When he retired from this position, he founded a firm of brush manufacturers Messrs. R. B. Thomson & Co, in Stockwell Street, Glasgow. He died in 1887 aged sixty-nine and is buried beside his mother.
James Glencairn Thomson, a younger son of Betty Burns, was the last survivor of the family. He died in 1911, at the age of eighty-four, having received at one time a small government pension in recognition of his grandfather's name and fame. He is also buried in the Vennel. The two sons, Robert Burns Thomson, and James Glencairn Thomson, attended the centenary celebrations of their grandfather's birth, held in the King's Arms Hall, Trongate, Glasgow, in 1859.
Betty Burns's youngest daughter, Margaret, was second wife of David Wingate the poet, who was born at Cowglen, near Pollokshaws. She died in 1898, aged sixty-three. She was buried in the family burying ground, which also was the burial place of Gilbert Burns Begg, the poet's nephew.

!Initial source: Two family group sheets in the FGRA collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. The one of the first marriage was submitted by Muzetta P. Burton, 24 W. N. Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. Her sources: Mayflower Desc. vols 1-4-14; R8D10 Eng. Ancs. p136; Pioneers of Mass. (Pope) p372; Savage Vols 1-3; FFH 2 Microfilm. (This last may be 'Family of the Pilgrims' by Shaw). Written on the sheet, (probably by Dorothy D. Hall, now deceased), was: 'Winthrop Fleet of 1636 - Banks p71 - Wife #3 Apphia Quicke daughter of Wm Quicke of London, wife of Samuel Freeman divorced him & married (2) Tho. Prence, Jr.' The sheet of the second marriage was submitted by Huberta F. Robison, 1806 A Bonita, Berkeley 4, Calif. Her sources were 'Hist. Cape Cod. p 363 and New Eng. Reg. Vol. 6 p 234. The FGRA sheets named children of the first wife as Thomas, Rebecca, Hannah and Mercy; those of the second wife, Jane, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth and Judith. 'The Great Migration Begins', a NEHGS study project published in 1995, says 'Establishing the probable date of marriage for Apphia and Thomas Prence has significant implications for the parentage of Prence's last three children. Apphia is last seen as a Freeman 1 July 1644, about a year before the birth of Prence's seventh child, and at the end of a six-year hiatus in the birthdates of his chidren. She is called 'Mrs. Freeman' as late as 15 October 1646 in a deed where she appears as an abutter, but this does not necessarily imply that she had not remarried by this date, since it was not unusual for archaic bounds to be used in this sort of description [Sandwich Land Records 1:78].' Apphia may have been mother of his last three children, Judith, 1645, Elizabeth, 1647, and Sarah, 1648. I have temporarily removed the last three children and changed the data on the others to fit with this source.
