General Notes: Child - Henri Strengs Strangs Lestrange
The son of Jehan and Marie Le Normann Streng of Walbredimus,
Luxembourg, Henry Streng (Streing) of Gien, Loiret, France,
was born in Waldbredimus, Luxembourg, Germany, about 1630.
Strang researcher, Charles Strange, never saw a document signed
by Henry written any other way than 'Streng' even though
numerous documents exist in which his name is spelled Streing.
He married Marie Babaulton 23 Sept 1650 and was naturalized as
a French Citizen on 4 March 1651. They had 7 known children:
Edmunde, Marie Francois, Paul, Henry, Daniel, Jean, and
Jacques. After Marie's death in 1677 Henry married the widow
Ester Mariette.
On Henry and Marie's son, Daniel's, marriage contract, dated
3 August 1680,they are listed as residents of Gien, near
Orleans. Eight years earlier, on29 July 1672, Daniel had
signed the roster of students at the Protestant Academy of
Geneva, Switzerland, as coming from Orleans, France. Henry's
employment as of 1650 was given as 'Collector of Taxes'. He
also served as major domo to the Duke de la Force, Henri Nompar
de Caumont (1582-1678), Duke de la Force and a Marshal of
France, and was a distinguished captain on the Protestantside
at the siege of Montauban which had been headquarters of the
Huguenot rebellion of 1621. In 1658, Henry was in the service
of the Duke of Anjou. From 1664 through 1675 he was employed
as a military steward (Lieutenant of Logistics) for Philippe
(1640-1701), brother of Louis XIV, who received the title of
Duke of Orleans in 1661. Henry obviously prospered in his work
for his large, impressive inventory, filed 28 September 1685,
comprised farms, houses andlands in and around Gien and ran to
29 articles and 9 pages. His principal residence was at the
end of the bridges of Gien in the parish of Poilly but he is
often referred to as Squire de La Robiniere, an estate in
nearby Autry-le-Chatel, which was part of his wife's dowry.2 SOUR S726

Alias:<ALIA> Ethelred the Unready /Æðelræd/
Ethelred the Unready (c. 968 – April 23, 1016), also know as Ethelred II a
nd Æðelræd Unræd was King of England(978 – 1013, and 1014 – 1016).
ccording to William of Malmesbury, Ethelred defecated in the baptismal fo
nt as a child, which led St. Dunstan to prophesy that the English monarc
hy would be overthrown during Ethelred's reign. This story is, however, al
most certainly a fabrication.
Ethelred succeeded to the throne aged about 10 following the death of h
is father King Edgar and subsequent murder of his half-brother Edward t
he Martyr. His nickname "The Unready" does not mean that he was ill-prepar
ed, but derives from the Anglo-Saxon unrædmeaning "without counsel" or "i
ndecisive". This is also a pun on his name, Æðelræd, which means "Well adv
ised".
Ethelred married firstly to Ælflaed, daughter of Thored, the ealdorm
an of Northumbria; she was the mother of four sons, including Edmund Irons
ide. In 997, he remarried to Ælfgifu, daughter of ealdorman Aethelberht, w
ho gave him two sons, Edwig and Edgar. His third and final marriage, in 10
02, was to Emma of Normandy, whose grandnephew, William I of England, wou
ld later use this relationship as the basis of his claim on the throne.

Conflict with the Danes
England had experienced a long period of peace after the reconquest of t
he Danelaw in the first half of the 10thCentury. However in 991 Ethelr
ed was faced with a Viking fleet larger than any since Guthrum's "Summer A
rmy" a century earlier. This fleet was led by Olaf Trygvasson, a Norwegi
an with ambitions to reclaim his country from Danish domination. After ini
tial military setbacks including the defeat of his Ealdorman Byrhtno
th at the Battle of Maldon, Ethelred was able to come to terms with Ola
f, who returned to Norway to gain his kingdom with mixed success. While th
is arrangement won him some respite, England faced further depredations fr
om Viking raids. Ethelred fought these off, but in many cases followed t
he practice of earlier kings including Alfred the Great in buying them o
ff by payment of what was to become known as Danegeld.
Ethelred ordered the massacre ofthe Danes living in England on St Brice
's Day (November 13) 1002, in response to which Sweyn Haraldsson start
ed a series of determined campaigns to conquer England. In this he succeed
ed, but after his victory, he lived for only another five weeks.
[edit]
Death and legacy
In 1013, Ethelred fled to Normandy, seeking protection by his brother-in-l
aw, Robert of Normandy, when England was over-run by Sweyn Haraldsson of D
enmark and his forces. He returned in February, 1014, following the dea
th of Sweyn Haraldsson. Ethelred died on April23, 1016, in London, whe
re he was buried. He was succeeded by his son, Edmund II of England.
Despite the steady stream of Viking attacks, Ethelred's reignwas far fr
om the disaster described by chroniclers writing well after the event. Eth
elred introduced major reforms to the machinery of government in Anglo-Sax
on England, and is responsible for the introduction of Shire Reeves or She
riffs. The quality of the coinage, always a good indicator of the prevaili
ng economic conditions, remained very high during his reign.

General Notes: Husband - William De Lapole
Sir William de la Pole of Hull (died 1366) was a wealthy wool merchant in Kingston upon Hull, a royal moneylender and a Chief Baron of the Exchequer.
Life
Sir William and his (probably older) brother Sir Richard de la Pole (died 1345) were merchants at Hull by 1317, importing Gascon wines. From 1317, they were deputies of the Royal Chief Butler. From 1321, they were collectors of customs and chamberlains of the town. With the accession of Edward III (then under the tutelage of Roger Mortimer and Queen Isabella), war with Scotland was resumed. They loaned the pair large sums of money in 1327, and in return Richard received the appointment of Chief Butler of England. When the Bardi, Edward's Florentine bankers were unable to lend the king money to pay his troops, the Pole brothers did so. They were owed £13,482 by February 1329.
Contrary to earlier suggestions, they did not lose power with Mortimer's fall, but their wealth meant they could not be totally excluded from the government of Edward III. Richard continued to attend court at a time when Mortimer's supporters were absent. In July 1331, the brothers divided their assets. Richard was again Chief Butler of England from 1333 to 1338. He was an alderman of London from 1330 to 1340 (when he was knighted), but died in 1345. His son William is principally known as a Northamptonshire landowner.
In 1331 Sir William persuaded the king to make Hull into an autonomous borough, instead of having a royal warden. On the death of the last warden in 1333, the brothers took over the royal property there and Sir William became Mayor of Hull, a post which he filled for the next 4 years. He also represented the city of Hull in five sessions of Parliament (March 1332, September 1334, May 1335, September 1336, and February 1338).
He continued financing Edward's Scottish wars but also bought much property in Yorkshire and Durham. His trading activities included the large scale export of wool to Dortrecht, but he and his partners abused the right of compulsory purchase that they were granted, smuggling wool, and thus ruined the financing of the king's campaigns in the Netherlands in 1338-40.
As a result of this, he and his associates were arrested after the king's return in November 1340, and deprived of the property. However, he was released in May 1342 and the proceedings were quashed, probably because the king needed his help financially. He organised a new company, which managed the Customs and lent vast sums to the king, also buying up royal debts at a large discount. He withdrew from the company in 1345. The company continued, and financed the Crécy campaign and the Siege of Calais, but were ruined as a result of the Black Death. He escaped liability for the debts of the now bankrupt company. However, the prosecution of 1341 was revived, and Sir William only escaped by renouncing all debts due from the crown. This, however, still left him a wealthy man. He died in May 1366, five months after his son Michael was summoned to Parliament as a peer.
Family
The origins of Sir William are obscure. His father's name is not certainly known but may have been William. His mother Elena remarried John Rotenheryng. Some genealogical tables indicate Sir William was related to the old Mathrafal ruling house of Powys Wenwynwyn. However, there is no concrete evidence whatever of this alleged relationship, though those princes' descendants used the surname de la Pole (i.e. "of the Pool", referring to their case to Welshpool). This surname was no doubt not exceptional.
By an unknown wife Sir William had two daughters and three sons:
Blanche de la Pole (born 1327), wife of Richard le Scrope, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton
Margaret de la Pole (born c. 1330), wife of Robert Neville (c. 1325 - 1413), son of Robert Neville and Joan Atherton
Michael de la Pole, 1st Earl of Suffolk (c. 1330 - 1389)
Sir Edmund de la Pole (born bef. 1346)
Sir Thomas de la Pole
De la Pole Avenue, located in the west of Kingston upon Hull, is named after Sir William.

Michael de la Pole, 1st Baron de la Pole, later 1st Earl of Suffolk (c. 1330 - 1389) was an English financier and Lord Chancellor of England.
Life
He was the oldest son of Sir William de la Pole of Hull (d. 1366) and Catherine Norwich, daughter of Sir Walter Norwich.
His father was a wool merchant from Hull who became a key figure during the reign of Edward III: after the collapse of the Bardi and Peruzzi families, he emerged as Edward's chief financier. Michael enjoyed even greater popularity at court than his father, becoming one of the most trusted and intimate friends of Edward's successor, Richard II.
He was appointed Chancellor in 1383,[1] and created Earl of Suffolk in 1385, the first of his family to hold any such title. However, in the late 1380s his fortunes radically altered, in step with those of the king. During the Wonderful Parliament of 1386 he was impeached on charges of embezzlement and negligence, a victim of increasing tensions between Parliament and Richard.
Even after this disgrace, he remained in royal favour, although soon fell foul of the Lords Appellant. He was one of a number of Richard's associates accused of treason by the Appellants in November 1387. After the Appellants' victory at Radcot Bridge (December 1387) and before the so-called Merciless Parliament met in February 1388, De La Pole shrewdly fled to Paris, thus escaping the fate of Sir Nicholas Brembre and Chief Justice Robert Tresilian. He remained in France for the remainder of his life. Sentenced in his absence, his title was stripped from him.
Jean Froissart's references to de la Pole in the Chroniques (II.173) portray a devious and ineffectual counsellor, who dissuaded Richard from pursuing a certain victory against French and Scottish forces in Cumberland, and fomented undue suspicion of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster.
De la Pole's descendants by Catherine Wingfield were key players in the political life of the next two centuries at Wingfield_Castle in Suffolk:
His son Michael de la Pole, 2nd Earl of Suffolk was a supporter of Henry IV and opponent of Richard. He regained his father's title on Henry's accession in 1399, and died at the Siege of Harfleur.
His eldest grandson Michael de la Pole, 3rd Earl of Suffolk died at the Battle of Agincourt.
His younger grandson William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk was appointed Lord Chamberlain under Henry VI, before being murdered in exile.
His great-great grandson was Edmund de la Pole, 3rd Duke of Suffolk, who led a botched rebellion against Henry VII in 1501.

William de la Pole is the name of several prominent Englishmen in the 14
th century, all from the same family.
[edit]
Sir William de la Pole (The Elder)
Sir William de la Pole (the elder) was a merchant in Kingston-upon-Hull a
nd Ravenser Odd. He was the eldest son of Owen ap Griffith de la Pole (ali
as Owain ap Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn and was therefore the great-grands
on of Gwenwynwyn ab Owain the last ruling Tywysog of the Welsh princelyre
alm of Powys Wenwynwyn.
The ruling family of Powys-Wenwynwyn appeared to change their name after t
hey were dispossessed by Llywelyn Fawr in 1212. For a period both the nam
es "Ap Gwenwynwyn" and "de la Pole" are interchangeable. Why the family d
id this remains obscure, but Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn married Hawise Le Stra
nge (the daughter of John Le Strange - a prominent Anglo-Norman) and Gruff
ydd's children and grandchildren may have wished to adopt some of these An
glo-Norman customs themselves. These were the twilight years of Welshinde
pendence, and being Welsh was not particularly fashionable in English soci
ety - nor safe.
Sir William's grandfather Gruffydd was involved in the Welsh Wars and w
as instrumental in killing Llywelyn ap Gruffydd in 1282. He diedhimse
lf in 1289. Sir William's father Owen ap Griffith de la Pole who accompani
ed Gruffydd died shortly afterwards in 1292.
Sir William de la Pole was born in exile in 1275 in Yorkshire and had seve
ral younger brothers including Lewis de la Pole, Owen de la Pole and Griff
in de la Pole, any of which could claim to be the de jure Prince of Pow
ys Wenwynwyn. Sir William married Elena Rotenheryng and they had two son
s; Sir William and Sir Richard. Sir William (the elder) died about 1329.
[edit]
Sir William de la Pole (The Younger)
Sir William de la Pole (the younger) (d. 1366) was a wealthy merchant in K
ingston-upon-Hull and Ravenser Odd, a royal moneylender and baron of the E
xchequer.
Sir William was, along with his older brother Sir Richard de la Pole, a st
rong supporter of the government of Roger Mortimer and Queen Isabella. Th
ey loaned the pair large sums of money in 1327, and in return received app
ointment as gaugers of wine throughout England, and control of custo
ms in Hull and later in London. They lost some of these posts after Mortim
er's fall, but their wealth meant they could be totally excluded from t
he government of Edward III.
In 1332 Sir William convinced the king to convert the office of chief magi
strate of Hull to Lord Mayor of Hull, a post which he filled for the ne
xt 4 years. He also represented the city of Hull in five sessions of parli
ament (March 1332, September 1334, May 1336, September 1336, and Februa
ry 1338).
During this time he continued as the king's financier, and in 1339 he w
as appointed second baron of the exchequer. The next year, however, Edwa
rd III had him arrested and imprisoned. He was convicted, though the charg
es were annulled by Parliament in 1344.
Sir William (the younger) had three sons;
* Michael de la Pole, 1st Earl of Suffolk
* Sir Edmund de la Pole
* Sir Thomas de la Pole
There is an avenue (de la Pole avenue) located in the west of Kingston up
on Hull named after Sir William.
William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk (1396-1450) was his great-grandson
.

General Notes: Wife - Katherine De Norwich
Alias:<ALIA> /Margaret/
General Notes: Child - Michael De Lapole
was the oldest son of William de la Pole (d.1366) and Catherine Norwi
ch , daughter of Sir Walter Norwich.
His father was a Hull wool merchant who emerged as a key figure during t
he reign of Edward III of England, becoming the king's chief financier aft
er the collapse of the Bardi and Peruzzi families. Michael enjoyed even gr
eater popularity at court than his father, becoming one of the most trust
ed and intimate friends of Richard II.
He was appointed Chancellor in 1383, and created Earl of Suffolk in 138
5, the first of his family tohold any such title. However in the late 138
0s his fortunes radically altered, in step with those of the king. Duri
ng the Wonderful Parliament of 1386 hewas impeached on charges of embezzl
ement and negligence, a victim of increasing tensions between Parliament a
nd Richard.
Even after this disgrace he remained in royal favour, although soon fell f
oul of the Lords Appellant: he wasone of a number of Richard's associat
es accused of treason by the Appellantsin November 1387. After the Appell
ants' victory at Radcot Bridge (December 1387) and before the so-called Me
rciless Parliament met in February 1388, De La Pole shrewdly fled to Pari
s, thus escaping the fate of Nicholas Brembre andChief Justice Robert Tre
filian. He remained in France for the remainder of his life. Found guil
ty in his absence, his title was stripped from him.
Jean Froissart's references to de la Pole in the Chroniques (II.173) portr
ay a devious and ineffectual counsellor, who dissuaded Richard from pursui
ng a certain victory against French and Scottish forces in Cumberland, a
nd fomented undue suspicion of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster.[1]
De la Pole's descendants were key players in the political life of the ne
xt two centuries.
* His son Michael de la Pole, 2nd Earl of Suffolk was a supporter of H
enry IV and opponent of Richard. He regained his father's title on Henry
's accession in 1399, and died at theSiege of Harfleur.
* His eldest grandson Michael de la Pole,3rd Earl of Suffolk di
ed at the Battle of Agincourt.
* His younger grandsonWilliam de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk was cre
ated Lord Chamberlain under Henry VI, before being murdered in exile.
* His great-great grandson was Edmundde la Pole, 3rd Duke of Suffol
k, who led a botched rebellion against Henry VII in 1501.
ADVISOR AND CHANCELLOR TO RICHARD II
Michael fought in France with Edward the Black Prince during the 100 Year
s' War. He became a trusted advisor of Richard II, who made him Chancell
or and Earl of Suffolk. His enemies in Parliament forced his dismissa
l. He was imprisoned for a time until released by Richard II. He fled to F
rance and died in exile.
