Alias:<ALIA> /Ælfred/
Alfred (849? – 26 October 899) or Ælfred was king of the southern Anglo-Sa
xon kingdom of Wessex from 871 to 899. Alfred is famous for his defen
ce of the kingdom against the Danes (Vikings), becoming as a result the on
ly English monarch to be awarded the epithet "the Great" by his people. Al
fred was the first King of Wessex to style himself "King of England". Deta
ils of his life are known as a result of a work by the Welsh scholar, Asse
r. A learned man, Alfred encouraged education and improved the kingdom's l
awsystem (Doom book).
Childhood
Alfred was born sometime between 847 and AD 849 at Wantage in Berkshire, t
he fourth son of King Ethelwulf of Wessex (Æþelwulf), most likely by his f
irst wife, Osburh. He succeeded his brother, Ethelred I (Æþelræd I), as Ki
ng of Wessex and Mercia in 871.
He seems to have been a child of singular attractiveness and promise, a
nd tales of his boyhood wereremembered. At five years old, in 85
3, he is said to have been sent to Rome, where he was confirmed by Pope L
eo IV, who is also said to have "anointed him as king." Later writers to
ok this as an anticipatory crowning in preparation for his ultimate succes
sion to the throne of Wessex. That, however, could not have been forese
en in 853, as Alfred had three elder brothers living. It is likely to be u
nderstood either of investiture with the consular insignia orpossibly wi
th some titular royalty such as that of the under-kingdom of Kent.
This tale is likely apocryphal, though in 854–855 Alfred almost certain
ly did go with his father on a pilgrimage to Rome, spending some time at t
he court of Charles the Bald, King of the Franks. In 858, Ethelwulf died.
[edit]
Public life
During the short reigns of his two eldest brothers, Ethelbald and Ethelber
t, nothing is heard of Alfred. But with the accession of the third brothe
r, Ethelred, in 866 the public life of Alfred began, and he began his gre
at work of delivering England from the Danes. It is in this reign that Ass
er applies to Alfred the unique title of secundarius, which seems to sh
ow a position akin to that of the Celtic tanist, a recognized successor, c
losely associated with the reigning prince. It is likely that this arrange
ment was sanctioned by the Witenagemot, to guard against the danger of a d
isputed successionshould Aethelred fall in battle. The arrangement of cro
wning a successor as co-king, however, is well-known among Germanic tribe
s, such as the Swedes, and the Franks, with whom the Anglo-Saxons had clo
se ties (see diarchy and Germanic king).

In 868 Alfred married Ealhswith, daughter of Aethelred Mucill, who is call
ed ealdorman of the Gaini, a folk who dwelt in Lincolnshire about Gainsbor
ough. She was the granddaughter of a former King of Mercia, and they had f
ive or six children, one a daughter, Ethelfleda, who would become que
en of Mercia in her own right.
The same year Alfred, fighting besidehis brother Ethelred, made an unsucc
essful attempt to relieve Mercia from the pressure of the Danes. For near
ly two years Wessex had a respite. But at the end of 870 the storm burs
t; and the year which followed has been rightly called "Alfred's year of b
attles."
Nine general engagements were fought with varying fortune, though the pla
ce and date of two of them have not been recorded. A successful skirmi
sh at Battle of Englefield, Berkshire (31 December 870), was follow
ed by a severe defeat at the Battle of Reading (4 January 871), and thi
s, four days later, by the brilliant victory of Battle of Ashdown, near Co
mpton Beauchamp in Shrivenham Hundred.
On 22 January 871 the English were again defeated at Basing, and on 22 Mar
ch 871 at Marton, Wiltshire, the twounidentified battles having perhaps o
ccurred in the interval.

General Notes: Child - Edward The Elder
Edward the Elder or Eadweard I (c.874-877 – July 17, 924) was King of Engl
and (899 – 924). He was the son of Alfred the Great and became King of Wes
sex upon his father's death in 899.
Edward arguably exceeded Alfred's military achievements, restoring the Dan
elaw to Saxon rule and reigning in Mercia from 918, after the death of h
is sister, Æðelfleda. He spent his early reign fightinghis cousin Æðelwal
d, son of Æðelræd I. He had about eighteen children from his three marriag
es, and may have had an illegitimate child, too. He died in 924 and was bu
ried at Winchester. Eadmund I, or Edmund the Deed-Doer (921–May 26, 946) w
ho was King of England from 939 was a son of Edward the Elder, and a half-
brother to Æðelstan.
Athelstan died on October 27, 939, and Edmund succeeded him as King. The p
ortrait included here is imaginary and was drawn together with portrai
ts of other Anglo-Saxon monarchs by an unknown artist in the 18th century.
[edit]
Family
Edward married Ecgwynn around 893, and they became the parents of Æðelst
an and a daughter who married King Sihtric of York, but Ecgwynn's status w
as considered too lowly. When he became king in 899, Edward set Ecgwynn as
ide and married Ælffæd , a daughter of the ealdorman of Wiltshire. Their s
on was the future king Æðelweard, and their daughter Eadgyth married Ot
to I, Holy Roman Emperor. Their other Daughter Eadgifu married Charles t
he Simple.
Edward married for a third time, about 919, to Eadgifu, the daughter of t
he ealdorman of Kent. They had two sons, Eadmund and Eadred, and one daugh
ter Eadburh.

General Notes: Child - Ethelfleda
Alias:<ALIA> /Ethelfleda/
Ethelfleda (alternative spelling Aethelfled, Æthelfleda or Æthelflæd) (872
/879?-918) was the eldest daughter of King Alfred the Great of Wessex a
nd his wife Ealhswith. She was born around AD 872. She married Aethelr
ed or Ethelred, later the ealdorman or earl of Mercia, in about 886, and h
ad one daughter, Aelfwynn. When she was 15, while she was traveling toMer
cia to get married, her band was attacked by the Danes, attempting to ki
ll Aethelflaed and break off the alliance. Though half her company perish
ed in the first attack, AEthelflaed used an old trench as a fortress, a
nd defeated the Danes. While her husband was alive, she signed agreement
s, leading some to think that she was the real leader. On her husband's de
ath in 911 after the Battle of Tettenhall, she was elevated to the stat
us of "Lady of the Mercians". This title was not a nominal position; she w
as a formidable military leader and tactician. Ethelfleda ruled for five y
ears from the newly fortifiedcapital at Stafford, and under her reig
n, it is likely that the English county of Staffordshire first came into b
eing. She fortified her existing bordersand re-took Derby. She died in 91
8, and is buried at Gloucester. She was joint lady of the Mercians along w
ith her young daughter Aelfwynn. She was succeeded as ruler of Mercia by h
er brother, King Edward the Elder.
This gives some insight into the emergence of England from the union of We
ssex and Mercia. The Danes overran most of the English Kingdoms such as No
rthumbria, Eastern Mercia, East Anglia etc. Alfred and his descendants rec
onquered these lands from the Danes by 937[1]. The aid given him in th
is by Mercia had to be acknowledged. Instead of making the dominion of Wes
sex over Mercia seem like a conquest, Alfred made Ethelfleda's husband Aet
helred, Eolderman or Earl of Mercia, thus allowing some ongoing autonom
y. Since much of Western Mercia was neverunder the control of the Dane
s, and remained strong, this was a prudent move. Further prudence prevail
ed when the kingdoms were absorbed; they were not absorbed into Wess
ex or greater Wessex but into England. The term Anglo-Saxon thus reflec
ts King Alfred's diplomatic integration of the Mercians Angles andthe Sax
ons.
The dominion of Mercia descended to Ethelfleda's daughter and heiress, Ael
fwynn (A.D. 920). Chroniclers have noticed the right of Aelfwynn so precis
ely as to leave no doubt concerning her claim; and this fact is of conside
rable value in showing that, contrary to the practice of other Teutonic na
tions, the sovereign authority amongst the Anglo-Saxons might desce
nd to a female; or, according to the Anglo-Saxon expression, which the Fre
nch have adopted, "fall to the spindle side".
In this instance, however, the weaker heir was compelled to yield to a mo
re powerful opponent, and one from whom no enmity could have been feare
d. Aelfwynn was conducted as a captive into Mercia by her uncle Edward, w
ho was engaged in successful warfare against the Danes;and we do not he
ar anything more concerning her in history. She seems to have lived the re
st of her life in a nunnery.

Douglas Richardson, The Heath Connection, English origins of Isaac and William Heath of Roxburgy, Massachusetts, John Johnson, Edward Morris, and Eizabeth (Morris) Cartwright. NEHGR, 2992, 271-278: "American genealogists have been aware for some time that hte immigrant John Johnson (ca 1590-1659) of Salem and Roxbury, Massachusetts, was related in some way to Elder Isaac and William Heath of Roxbury, and that the Heaths were also kin somehow to the immigrant, Edward Morris, and to Morris's sister, Elizabeth (Morris) Cartwright. Such kinship is proved by a series of Johnson, Heath and Morris Wills, reviewed by Reay G. Hurlburt in Capt Johnson Nd his wife, Margery of Roxbury - Who were They?" in TAG, 22 (1945-6); 47-49.
John Johnson in his will proved in 1659 called Ellder Isaac Heath his loving brother, and named him overseer in his will. Elder Isaac Heath's will dated 10- Jan 1660/1 referred to three knfolk; cousin Martha Brand, whose maiden name was known to be Heath, kinswoman Mary Mory *John Johnson's daughter(, and kinsman Edward Morris. Isaac Heath's widow Elizabeth in her will proved in 1664 naemd 'my cousin Capt Johnson. Isaac Heath's widow Elizabeth in her will dated 26 Sep 1673, named her cousin Isaac Johnson, cousin, Pepper (a Johnson son in law), cousin Bowen, cousin Bartholomew, and cousin Nathaniel Johnson's wife. All of these relatives can be identified as children and grandildren of the immigrant John Johnson.
It looked as though John Johnson was married to a sister of Elder Isaac and William Heath, adn that Edward Morris and his sister Elizabeth were the nephew and niece of Johnson's wife and of the Heath brothers.
In 1978 Peter Walne, County Archivist of Hertfordshire, published evidence which proved that the immigrant Heath brotehrs had their origins in hte adjacent parishes of Ware and Great Amwell (NEHGR, 132 [ 1978]: 20-21. He did not mention Johnson or Morris.
Richardson used Family History Library films of parish registers of Ware and Great Amwell to search for all entries for Johnson, Heath and Morris. John Johnson's wife and the mother of Edward Morris and his sster were Heath's. Further, the Heath brothers were first cousins to Martha Heath, wife of George Brand of Roxbury.
The family tree I have put together here is from these articles.
1992 NEHGS article says that the name of William's wife has not been found. However, apparently her father and uncle named her in their wills.
That William and not either of his brothers Robert or John, was the father of the next generation, is strongly suggested by the fact that he inherited his father's house there, to the exclusion of his brothers. He was probably established there already. The Ware parish registers do not name the father of children baptized there between 1581 and 1604, but the spacing of baptism suggests that there was only one Heath family having children in this period of time. Beginning 8n 1604, the registers include the father's name, and that year William's son Thomas was baptized. This was probably his last child. No further children for this William appear in the registers of Ware or Great Amwell.
From Douglas Richard, update:
New evidence on the Heath line has confirmed that William Heath, Sr., of Ware was the father of the immigrants Isaac and William. An inquisition taken at Ware, Hertfordshire, 20 June 1628, mentions an earlier indenture dated 20 March 1612/13 where by Humphrey Spenser of Ware, gentleman, citizen, and haberdasher of London, and John Thorowgood of Ware, yeoman, acting as trustees, conveyed various properties to a large number of inhabitants of Ware, among them William Heath and Isaac his son .

William was aboard one of the eleven vessels of the Winthrop Fleet (the "G reat Emigration") of 1630, which arrived at Salem in April and in Jul y. He is listed alone and bound for "Boston and York, Maine".
According to family tradition, William was a servant to governor Winthro p. In 1635 he supposedly left without permission for York, and bought a ho use there Jan. 13, 1636/7, where he lived 30 years as a cooper. He appea rs on jury rolls in 1650.
His wife Joane, named in his will, was mother of Dorothy, his stepdaughte r. Dorothy married William Moore. In 1686, about 20 years after William 's death, the court ordered the Moores to take their mother 'Joane Dixo n' to their home and maintain her out of the estate willed to her by husba nd William Dixon.

The surname FOGG is believed to be of Danish origin, the name FOGG iinEngland is of the greatest age. Its antiquity and its nationality almostperplexing. It is English as far as the history of England goes, and itis Danish and Welsh and Norman. The Domesday Book, compiled bycommissioners appointed by William the Conqueror in 1086 states: "TheFOGG'S are found as land owners in the Totula Hund redorum, or HundredRolls, prepared in 1273 by King Edward I on his return from Palistine."The name FOGG was known in Denmark before English was spoken in England. The Fogg family took it firmest hold in Kent County, England.
The form FOGG means: Meadow, Green Field.

On April 16, 1634 William FIFIELD took the oath of Allegiance before embarking for America on the ship Hercules of London. On arriving in New England, he lived a time at Ipswich, then Newbury finally settling in 1639 at Hampton, N.H., where he became a freeman June 2, 1641.
William served on the jury 1651, 62, 67, 69, 77, 78; was constable in 62 and selectman in 1652 and 1659. His name appears often in the court records as attorney for others, and his signature is attached to many of the early documents of the town.
As per The American Genealogist V.15, July 1938 page 218
William immigrated from London on the Ship Hercules, John Kiddey, Master, which left London March 24, 1634 and Southhampton April 18 with 12 passengers. It landed Ipswich MA in April. He became one of the original settlers of Hampton, NH in 1638 and died there in 1700 at over 80 years of age. Records indicate that he had the confidence of his townspeople and other tories in settlement of affairs in dispute. He acted as Attorney, Constable and Sheriff in cases of record.
He lived in Hampton, Rockingham, NH. He was made a freeman on 2 Jun 1641 in Hampton, Rockingham, NH.

General Notes: Husband - John Whitmarsh
The immigrant ancestor of the Whitmarsh family in America. He was one of Rev. Joseph Hull's company that sailed from Weymouth, England, 20 MAR 1635. On 8 JUL 1635, the General Court of Massachusetts passed an order permitting Rev. Joseph Hull's company of twenty-one families to settle at Wessaguscus, whic was incorporated under the name of Weymouth, 2 SEP 1635.
The family is given in the passanger list as follows:
"Jno. Whitmarsk aged 39 years,
Alice Whitmarke his Wife aged 35 yeare,
Jms Whitmarcke his sonne aged 11 yeare,
Jane his daughter aged 7 yeare,
Onseph Whitmarke his sonne aged 5 yeare,
Rich: Whytemark his sonne aged 2 Yeare."
Nicholas, Simon and John are not included. It is believed that they were older sons who came over after the family was established here. There is a description of lands of Nicholas, Richard, Onesiphorous and Simon, mentioning "nine acres in the westerneck first given to their father, John Whitmarsh, deceased." This proves the existance of two sons, Nicholas and Simon, not mentioned in the passenger list. Also in the description of John Harding's land mention is made of "Halfe an acre of fresh marsh which he gave to John Whitmarsh sonn of the aforesaid John Whitmarsh." This establishes the fact that John Whitmarsh, immigrant, had a son John.
General Notes: Wife - Alice
Date of Death - 6 MAR 1654/55 in Mayflower Descendant Magazine, 17:72, Plymouth Colony, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, New England
Burial: BET. 1654 - 1655 probably, Nemasket Hill Cemetery, Plymouth Street, Middleboro, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, New England
Possible identities of "Alice":
Alice Foker m. John Shawe 29th September 1603 in Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk, England
Alice Lockwood m. John Shaw b. abt. 1583, 3rd July 1608 in Ecclesfield, Yorkshire, England
Alice Sutton m. John Shaw 13th June 1615 in Sedbergh, Yorkshire, England
Alice Rigby m. John Shaw 21st December 1620 in Ormskirk, Lancashire, England
Alice Whitmarsh of Wessaguscus or Wessagusett Colony (now Weymouth), Norfolk County, Massachusetts, New England, her husband John Whitmarsh died in 1644 leaving her a widow being around the same age of this John Shaw of Plymouth Colony.
THE ODDS OF ALICE WHITMARSH BEING THE WIFE OF JOHN SHAW ARE VERY PROBABLE, BUT IT WOULD NATURALLY HAVE TO BE PROVEN WITH SOME KIND OF PRIMARY RECORDS\DOCUMENTS, WILLS AND DEEDS TO BE ACCEPTED.
It is unclear at this time if "Alice" is the mother of John Shaw's children, or his first or second wife, but there is a good possibility that he had a wife/wives before her in England ?maybe Leyden?
We can narrow down to whom this Alice really is by the process of elimination. Research each persons genealogy backwards and forwards along with the help of deeds, wills, and land transfers and it can be fair to say that we will make a discovery. As far as I know this has never been done yet.
Note: Appendixes of The Real Founders of New England
Appendix A
page 162
THE INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK HAS A FEW MISTAKES. THIS JOHN SHAW NOTED HERE APPEARS TO BE THE ONE FROM WESSAGUSSET COLONY AND PROBABLY DID NOT PARTAKE IN THE 1627 PLYMOUTH COLONY CATTLE DIVISION AND IS PROBABLY NOT THIS JOHN SHAW WHO MARRIED THIS "ALICE".
Note: Appendixes of The Real Founders of New England Appendix A, page 162:
SHAW, John, Wessagusset, 1623?; in division of cattle Plymouth, 1627; "John Shaw Sr" of Weymouth 1672/3; 9th September, 1704, "dyed old goodman Shaw of Weymouth pretty suddenly." Goodwin, Pilgrim Republic, p. 297, says that Shaw and Phinehas Pratt of the division did not come in any Pilgrim ship. Closely associated in land sales (Mayflower Desc., vol. 4, 1902, p. 96). Of course Shaw may have come in a fishing ship, not with Pratt. [p.162)
Fact: This JOHN SHAW and ALICE PHILLIPS ARE NOT THE JOHN SHAW AND "ALICE" OF PLYMOUTH COLONY, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, New England see (See this John Shaw that died 16th September 1704, late of Weymouth 17th October 1704., Last Will and Testament for identification proving they ARE NOT the other Shaws of Plymouth Colony) (Suffolk Probate, 15: 350.) (IBid. n. s., 6:181.) During the 1600's It is purely and simply coincidental that there is another family of Shaw's less than 30 miles away who just so happened to be "John Shaw and Alice Shaw." John and Alice are very popular names in 1500's and 1600's and there is enormous amount of people with those first names in those time eras. Also when a quite a few genealogy researchers made attempts to look for wills, deeds, land and court records of this Shaw family, the researchers have failed to notice that Wessaguscus or Wessagusett Colony (now Weymouth), is at first in the jurisdiction of SUFFOLK COUNTY until it later became NORFOLK COUNTY.
More than likely though, It is very probable that these two separate couples "John and Alice Shaw" may have known of each others existence living here in New England. Although it has been proven without a doubt the John Shaw of Weymouth, his father is Abraham Shaw and Bridget Best and is much younger than the John Shaw of Plymouth Colony. Also more than likely these two different John Shaw's are cousins going back several generations over in England. There is even a possibility they are even more so closely related to one another. It is known that the Shaw families in England are farmers and miners who owned lots of land all over and flourished in the Yorkshire and London regions of England.
CAN IT BE FAIR TO SAY SOMEDAY AFTER RESEARCH, THE SHAW FAMILIES IN ENGLAND ARE THE SAME SHAW FAMILY THROUGH HUNDREDS OF YEARS? ALSO IT IS KNOWN THAT SHAWS FROM SCOTLAND AND IRELAND THROUGH DIFFERENT GENERATIONS MIGRATED TO ENGLAND, BACK AND FORTH, TO AND FRO IN VARIOUS DIFFERENT AREAS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.
Here is a list a towns in the United States of America that are named after different Shaws' over the years and their locations, but of course not necessarily all of the places listed here are named after the Shaw descendants from this John and Alice Shaw family:

History of New Hampshire
Various Algonquian tribes inhabited the area prior to European settlement. Europeans explored New Hampshire in 1600-1605 and settled in 1623. By 1631, the Upper Plantation comprised modern-day Dover, Durham and Stratham; in 1679, it became the "Royal Province."
No Caucasian was born in New Hampshire prior to 1623.

The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriges, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 724,091 people via interlocking
marriages.
My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.

General Notes: Husband - Robert McCausland
Lived in Fruithill, near Newtown Limavady, Co. Londonderry (now known as Drenagh). He also had estates in the parish of Cappagh, Co. Tyrone. Under the will of his wife's uncle, the Right Honorable William Conolly of Castetown, Co. Kildare, he inherited considerable property in Co. Derry in the Limavady area. Many of his descendants have retained Conolly as a given name. He was styled his cousin in a will of Capt. Oliver McCausland of Strabane.
"Rentals, accounts etc. between William Conoly and Robert McCausland of Limavady, his agent for 'the manor of Newtownlimavady' by William Conolly. Also the adjoining churchlands of Drumachose, and the separate and distinct Grocers' Proportion, including information on tenants who had thrown up their Limvady farms to go to New England," 1718. PRONI T.2825/C/11/1-18 on LDS 1701052.
William Conolly left his lease for years which he held from the See of Derry to "my agent Robert McCausland Esq. as an acknowledgement for the faithful services he has done me." Thus the church lands of Drumachose, Tamlaght Finlagan and Balteagh, originally leased by Phillips, pased to the McCauslands and became the Drenagh estate set out in the map and survey of 1794. The original house, called Fruithill, was built in the 1730s.

Dear Mary, the earliest entry in our old bible is of Robert McCausland to Alice in 1691. In the same book he listed as marrying Widow Hamilton in 1709.
L. McCausland
"The Phillips estate (at Limavady, the "Lodge", north of the present market yard) was bought by the right Hon. William Conolly, of Castletown, County Kildare, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. Conolly built and lived in Roe Park, then Daisy Hill, Limavady. He died in 1729, and the plan of wearing linen scarfs at funerals to encourage the linen industry was first observed at his funeral. Under his will Robert McCausland, of Fruit Hill (or Dreenagh) succeeded to considerable estates in County Derry. The McCauslands are of Scottish origin, where the name is often written as MacAuslane. The McCausland family have retained an unbroken connection with Limavady ever since, the present representative of the family being Colonel
Conolly McCausland."
