children.

Arundel (Kennebunkport), Maine, pp. 27 and 33-34. Born Rowley
Village before its name was changed to Boxford. Was a carpenter.
Served as tythingman in 1727; fenceviewer 1730; and constable 1733.
Confused with another Samuel Smith, son of William Smith, who lived
over the Ipswich border but attended church in Topsfield.

GenServe file CRAA6HB, 30 July 1998. Sarah Curtis, 1675/6 -after

(see above) with the second Samuel Smith.

General Notes: Husband - Richard Curtis
"Four brothers, Richard, William, John and Thomas Curtis, settled in Scituate. Thomas went to York, Maine; John appears to have left no descendants, while those of Righard and William are numerous in Scituate, Hanover and vicinity in Massachusetts
"Richard Curtis, immigrant ancestor, was born in Kent, England. He settled in Scituate, Massachusetts, about 1643, and died there in 1693. Some writers have confused this RIchard with Richard Curtis, of Dorchester and Milton; and with Richard Curtis, of Salem and Marblehead. Richard, of Scituate, was on the list of Plymouth colony men able to bear arms in that 1643, and was a town officer in 1650. His brother William as also on this list, and together they took the oath of fidelity. He was one of the 'allowed and approved inhabitants' to whom portions of the common lands were assigned by the joint committee of the general court in 1673. Richard Curtis and Thomas Hyland were witnesses to the will of General James Cudworth in 1682. His home was between that of Gowen White and the harbor below Millbrook."5
"Richard Curtis was one of four brothers who came early to New England, viz. Richard, Thomas, John and William. John left no family.
"Richard had lands at Marblehead in 1648, and in the same year he purchased lands in Scituate, and built a house between Gowin White's and the Harbour.
"His will, dated 1692, gives 'To oldest son John two thirds ofmy real estate, he providing for my wife Lydia during her life. To son Thomsas one third, &c. To daughters Hannah Curtis, Elizabeth Brooks, Mary Badcocke, and Martha Clark.'"
"William Curtis, (brother of Richard), bore arms in Scituate 1643. His farm was on North river, next south of the Wanton farm."
194. John Curtis.
John appears to have left no descendants.24
195. Thomas Curtis.
"Thomas Curtis, (brother of Richard), was in Scituate 1649. He had previously lived at Georgiana, and is called of York, in our records. He returned to York, where he was living in 1684, at which date he gave a deed to his son Samuel, of lands on Curtis or Buttonwood hill, where Samuel and several generations of his family lived.
"Two children of Thomas Curtis were born and baptized in Scituate second parish, Elizabeth 1649, and Samuel 1659. He had also a son Benjamin of Portsmouth. We have seen a deed (preserved here) from Robert Tufton Mason to Benjamin Curtis, conveying a lot of land 'on Great Island in the Piscataqua River,' dated 1681

My dear Children,
I take my pen in hand to address a few line to you on matters and things as they come to my mind as respects our healths. They are as good as usual excepting myself. I Have not been able to do much the past summer but it has been rather improving for two months past as to our business prospects for the present year. I think that it will turnout rather ominous in conequince of the extreme drought which cut short our hay crop two thirds at least from what we had last year and our pastures in about the same proportion we have about fifty head of cattle on hand that we have been trying to fat and we have not feed enough on our farm to keep them from falling away and have had to commence cutting up wheat little corn we have to feed them on until the weather is cool enough to barrel them as we shall not be able to get them fat enough for --------- that is a good many of them and shall be obliged to take that course to get rid of them we have never had any thing to compare with the
present have not had rain enough to get the ground thoroughly wet since. The snow went off in the spring our pastures and meadows dried. Many acres of them are entirely dry not the least green thing on them I read a letter from brother Moses last week according to his account the hay crop is a great deal shorter with them than it is with us their feed is better as they have had some showers with them than we have had with us he writes that it is a very favorable time to purchase sheep in Ohio that good sheep can be bought for 75 cents per head and if you have anything to winter sheep on in your country I thing that it is a very favorable time for you to get you a flock of sheep it is said that corn --- are equally as good as hay to winter sheep on but I have not made a trial of feeding stalks to sheep but think that they might answer by feeding them corn in addition and a few oats for change. My son and I have con------- to make you a proposition to purchase one or two thousand sheep in Ohio and find money for expense on the road from Ohio to where you live and you furnish hands to drive them to your country on the following times. that you take the sheep for ten years and receive annual interest at six per cent on the money advanced and the money that we advance before or at the end of ten years from the arrivals of the sheep and at the end of ten years to Have the remaining sheep sold and give equal share of profits or --- provided that you will take the sheep at Ohio and as before specify and is the diving[?] and take all of the care of them that is necessary that is keep them secure from wild beasts and from all necessary prey and grain for to feed them on and be the expense of -------------------- and be paid for said keeping not to exceed forty cents per head usually of ------ if you can bargain with some responsible man or men to keep a portion of the sheep at a less price or it should prove that they can be kept at a less price or if that proves to be to small compensation we will agree that five cents per head may be added to the above named forty cents. The wool to be sent to us for to dispose of such wool as we sold for forty four cents last year is not worth more than thirty two cents and we need not expect that it will average more that about thirty two cents delivered here ---- I must close by sub--------- my self your affectionate father and friend Justus Sackett
PS If you conclude to do anything about the sheep wright to us immediately and Myron will meet you in Ohio. It will be necessary to have them on the road as soon as possible.
Ever Dear Brother and Sisters. I once more seat myself to write a few lines to you, which is for less agreeable that to seat myself by your sides and converse, beholding each other face to face, but let us be Thankfull for this privilege and improve it to the best advantage. I begin to think you have not received by last letter, or did not think it worth answering, by your deferring writing for such a length of time. Your last date was May 15, I had written but a few days previous to the reception of that letter. and have been waiting through the long season for an answer without writing again. Myron and Henry returned about the first of June. He not finding things as he expected, decided not to move west. And having made calculations to that effect. They have spent the summer with us. They are now in Williams-Town on a visit. Marion expects to start for home next Monday, her brother and Enos went in June. She was in school and chose to stay until it closed. They talk of all going to Illinois to live Emily has made the cheese this summer till school closed, Now Lucy is dairy maid I can tell of nothing that I do. It is the same think every day nearly, Myron has gone to Hartford with some cattle and lambs every thing has to be drove to market that will answer. to keep them from starving to death. we have had a fine rain to day and the appearance of more this evening. Mr. John Eyler has died since I wrote Aunt Mary Carter was buried last Sabbath she has been sick all summer with a disease of the heart. Mother is quite smart she spins and weaves and does more than all the Rest of us, she says I must tell you she has been trying this six weeks to make Lucy visit but she wont do any thing about it. Caroline Humphry is here on a visit she bought her eldest son with her, only and expects to leave him at her Fathers, she appears very natural, but has grown old in her looks as much as the rest of us, she has visited here. Mother says Lucinda must write when she is coming Home, and what company she has we should like to know we have had lots of huckleberry this summer they are about gone, but if you will call soon I can give you some pie and apple pie like------- I think we shall have a comfortable supply of apples, not as many as last year.
I wrote to you in my last of the state of religion here. [which if I knew you had not received] I could write some particulars that would be interesting but trusting that you have. I will only say that the interest has not entirely subsided, and beg an interest in your prayers that it may not so long as there is one immortal soul unreconciled to God Mr Woodin and wife have become interested in the all important subject the salvation of the soul. There is an apparent change in them I hope and pray that it may be a lasting one, may those that are be but a few drops before a more plentiful.
Please to remember much love to all who may inquire, with a full share to yourselves visit without fail and come as soon as you can Jane

UNCLE THEODORE E. CURTISS
A Biographical Sketch of This Noble Man's Life
Theodore E. Curtiss was born in Litchfield county Conn., in the town of Warren, May 23, 1813, and settled in Morgan county (Illinois) In the spring of 1835. His ancestors for many generations resided in the New England States, where they came from England. His great grand father was an officer in the Revolutionary war, and his son, Augustine, was his aide during the same war, and subsequently drew a pension therefor.
Uncle Theodore's father, after marriage resided in Connecticut until he was fifty years of age, when in 1837 he came to Illinois, passing his remaining days in Waverly. He died in the year 1886, lacking but a little over a year of rounding out a full century. His wife having died ten years previous. They were the parents of five children: Miranda, who married M. B. Strong, and resides in Connecticut; Theodore E., the subject of this sketch; Augustine A.; Lodenia, who married J. R. Godfrey and is a resident of Godfrey, Ill., and Frederick, who resides in Sangamon county. There had been no deaths in the family until a few months ago and the youngest child was over fifty years old when themother died.
Uncle Theodore passed his boyhood days on a farm, and received his limited education that was generally obtained in the common schools of his day. He resided in his native town until 1835 when he came to Illinois and purchased 160 acres of land, which he improved. In 1836 he returned to Connecticut and the following year was married to Laura A. Sackett. Immediately after marriage they came to Illinois and settled on the farm he had purchased the previous year. His parents, two brothers and one sister also returned with him, the journey was made via New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburg and the Ohio river, occupying three weeks. In the year 1835 Waverly was platted and Uncle Theodore assisted in the work, he having come to Illinois with Joseph A. Tanner, father of Dr. Tanner of Illinois college. Mr Curtiss gave his entire attention to farming until 1852 when in addition to his farming interests he was interested in a general store with his brother, Fred Curtiss and J. W. Ross. The business continured under the firm name for about five years when Theodore sold his interest and he again turned his entire attention to farming and thus continued until a few years ago when he became interested in the Bank of Waverly and with its failure he lost the greater portion of the property which he accumulated during his younger days. In the summer of 1866 he was called upon to mourn the death of his faithful companion and on Dec. 22, 1868 ye was united in marriage to Augusta L. Tupper, of Mass., and to this union was born one son, T. T. Curtiss, who still resides at the home residence in this city. Mrs. Curtiss died Dec. 31, 1896, and her sister, Mrs Louise Tupper, who has made her home with the family for several years, has kept house for Mr. Curtiss sine that time.
Last Thursday morning he fell asleep to wake in heaven.
On Saturday we attended his funeral after a prayer and some appropriate and beautiful scripture reading by the Rev. W. S. Bugbey, Dr. Fairbank, his former pastor and beloved friend, spoke of his life and character. He said that faithfulness seemed to his the one characteristic of his whole life. He never laid claim to a large number of talents but such as the Mast intrusted his with were faithfully cared for and increased.
Like Abraham, he obeyed the voice of God, and with unfaltering footsteps walked onward until like Paul, he finished his course and received the crown.
To us who knew him best those things are absolutely true. His life was a constant reproach to us who look outward with less serious eyes.
His benefactions were many as long as his means allowed, and his right had often scattered mercies that his left hand knew not of. In his sermon last Sabbath Mr. Bugbey compared the journey of Abraham across the plainsof Syria to Palestine to the journey of the sonsof New England across the intervening states to the fair prairies of the west, and as Abraham died with the vision unfulfilled, yet called the friend of God, so Theodore Curtiss journeyed with his bride from the rocks and hills of home to this fair land and in his old age when the beautiful picture of comfort and plenty, proved but a mirrage and vanished from his sight, there was no murmuring, only regret that he had nothing more to give. One of the last things I heard him say was: "Ibegan the world with nothing and I can leave it with nothing, it is all right."
Farewell brother and friend, we know"
"He met his Pilot face to face
When he passed o'er the Bar."
With the passing from our midst of Uncle Theldore, Waverly mourns the loss of one of the foremost citizens of the community and a man who bore the hightest mark of esteem and respect of all who knew him. He was one of the original members of the Congregational church, this city, and was a deacon in said church at the time of his death.
The funeral services were held at the family residence on the last Saturday morning, Feb. 9, and were conducted by Rev. Bugbey, after which interment was made in East cemetery.
May the life of this noble character be remembered as one which is well worthy of our example and respect.
DIES SUDDENLY
Waverly Mourns the Loss of Another on of Her Oldest and Most Respected Citizens--Uncle Theodora Curtiss Passes Away With Heart Failure at age of 88 years.
Our entire community was shocked Thursday morning when the report was circulated that Uncle Theodora Curtiss had suddenly died of heart failure at his home in this city at the advanced age of 88 years. Mr. Curtiss had bee quite healthy all his life and up to the day of his death was able to do considerable work around his home. He was the oldest of the Curtiss broghters who settled in this section as early as 1837 and he was highly respected by everybody, ever active and influential in every industry which showed a benefit to the city and community.
The funeral services will be held at the home at 10:00 o'clock this morning, conducted by Rev. W. S. Bagbey, of this city. Interment in East cemetery.
A more complete obituary and history of his life will appear inout next issue.

This is a letter to Theodore Everett Curtiss in Apple Creek Morgan Co., Illinois

He is interested in the Bank of Waverly.
On June 1, 1867 his first wife died. They had one child who died infancy.
May the life of this noble character be remembered as one which is well worthy of our example and respect.

tiss, aged almost 65 years. These few words do not tell of the darkened home or the saddened hearts of those bereft of one so dear. She was married to Theodore E. Curtiss in December, 1868, and has ever since resided in Waverly, Ill., where she has been the center of a loving family and a host of friends. As long as her health permitted she was very active in church work, and the missionary society ever received her helpful support, and to the last, when unable to take an active part, she still and often expressed her loving interest in the work. As a wife, mother, sister and friend, her place can never be filled, but husband, sister, son and daughters still feel that "she is not lost, but gone before."

Dear Cousin "Thedie"
Your letter was a surprise & was more a pleasure to us. We too hear of you in some round about way occasionally but that isn't quite like "first hand" news- so I hasten (?) to thank you. Tho' I fear I cannot help you very much in your research for family history. It is easy enough to know & tell a thing which is very hard to prove. I don't ever know that I could prove that Eleazer Curtiss was my great grandfather, tho I presume the town records are sufficiently complete for that. There seems no reasonable doubt but Eleazer was a Major "in good & regular standing". It is on his tombstone. The fact that Grandpa Augustine - his - went with him "in the wars" as his waiter - would indicate that he must have had at least the rank of Capt. - as would his sword- but I can not put my finger on the documentary proof required - tho I think we have the book from which your informant quoted. I presume that is the same Eleazer but as the last date is '77 there was plenty of time for promotion after that before the close of the war - Uncle Frnak says the record is probably in the War Department at Washington, D. C. and that you could get it by applying to your Congressman or the Adjutant Gen. Your Congressman would probably look it up, or cause it to be done with out much expense to you. We have one who seems "powerful" friendly - perhaps I can coax Winer to write to him - I well Remember Grandpa Augustines widow- dear Grandma & every body s "Aunt Lodema". After Aunt Louisas death she came to our house to live & died there 3 years later. Dec, 1857 aged 91. She drew a pension of ($96.00 a year. I think) & I have seen her sign the voucher - or what ever it was "Lodema Curtiss" widow of Augustine - At least that is as I recall it but I was only 12 or 13 at the time. So there may have been the middle initial S.-tho I doubt it. I can think now just how her signature looked - very poorly written was then I thought I could do it better - the last time she only touched the ends of the pen as some one else wrote her name. Don't talk of "gall". Was hesitate to write me whenever you think I may be able to help you. I shall be very glad for any excuse which prompts you to write to us- & will be glad to tell any thing I know am always glad to know that somebody is interested in our Curtiss genealogy - * hope some day before too long someone will look it all up & write it down for the benefit of those who come after. It will be a large task even now & grows larger every year. You better preserve all passable items & may be some day you will have leisure to make our Book.
Am glad to know that you and yours are so pleasantly situated & that you have so safe & paying a business. I never watched a carrier on his rounds without thinking - I would like to do that. It is so untechnical & must be very interesting. I remember Grace Gilbert well. She is about Agnes' age & I think was born the same day as Kittie Curtiss. Please remember me to her if it comes convenient. Those that are left of our Family in Warren are all well as usual at present. We are all connected by telephone - so can know one anothers affairs as never before- & we all enjoy it. Even aunt Jennett in New Haven Ave can speak to any evening for 15cts. but of course we do not call her up as often as those in Town. Uncle Austin is on our line so we don't even know to go to Central to talk with them. He & Aunt Fannie are alone this winter - except the man "Mills" who helps with the work. I sent them your letter & they send a great deal of love to you"& Belle & the Bay's & Aunt Louise"- Uncle Frank is an old man, 84 & rather feeble put usually is out every day to help about the chores & has been here twice this winter. Aunt Jennett is very well but quite lame. So she doesn't get about much. Alice means to bring her to the old place here this year as soon as the weather is warm enough. She feels more at home here - but of course she cannot stay alone & Alice can't be here all the time & it is very difficult to find the right person to be with her. Alice's son Charlie who was so very ill. So long since last Fall - is better now & hopes to be at work again soon. We are much as usual. Miner still quite "hearty" - but growing old & finds the farm work an elephant on his hands since Rob left us - but by hiring some, renting some - was being to hard himself & letting a good deal go undone - we get along after a fashion. I am not much use - but not so "bad off" as sometime. Agnes is teaching the College Farms school. & boards at home- her health is better than for years- but not perfect yet - rob is with Will Beeman in Liver b------in New Milford & thinks they are doing fairly well, better at least then he could as on the farm. He is home after - but- wants to stay very busy - but we want to be thankful he is so near. With much love for you & yours
Cousin Lucy C. Strong.

Strong.

Dear Aunt,
Your letter was received yesterday. this is a sad Sunday for us. We miss our dear little girl so much and feel so badly about it. She was a little sick a week ago last Thursday night but not badly so as we thought until Sunday. Since then we knew that she was very sick but she had such a good medical attention (Dr. Tuble & Dr. A.C. Brown) that we hoped for the best and at the worst did not expect her to go so soon. But I will let Belle write the particulars. As to that draft, I spoke to Mr. Reagel & Mr. Hutchison about it. Mr Hutchison says that they had money enough in New York to pay it and expected it to be paid but it was protested and sent back here. He has written to them about it and if they will not pay it you write to your friend to send you the draft and I think you can arrange it all right so that you can turn it in here and cancel your over draft with it. Since I happen to think of it now I will ask you Do you know what that Mrs Fords (Colored) address is or where the letter is that had it. Chas Jackson has been anxious for me to get it and give to him as he wants to write to them. Willia Riley died last week sometime. She was buried Thursday I think. Mr Frank died very suddenly too and was buried Friday. Mr. Kaye made a very nice talk at Frances funeral. The services were short. We requested that every body was very kind. We had flowers enough to cover her grave all over and then put a good many on Mamas grave.
This is a poor letter but I don't know what to write and will close now
With love
Theo. T. Curtiss
Dear Aunt Louise,
Will try and write you particulars of little Frances illness and death.
A week ago Thursday night her bowels seemed rather loose and were so bad on Friday we tho best to get something for her from the doctor. On Saturday she did not seem really worse, but we took her down to the Dr;s office so he could see her. She sat up in her buggy all the way down and back. but on Sunday A.M. she seemed pretty sick and lay in sort of a stupor all the early part of the day, tho she would brighten when we spoke to her. The Dr. came up to see her and that her pretty sick through not seriously so. Monday she seemed a little better and toward evening would brighten up and seem real happy. She did not sit up by herself after Wednesday tho. She was so weak. Dysentery was the trouble. But on Thursday, her trouble with her bowels seemed to be so much better the Dr. & Mrs Henry though she would keep improving after that, but on Friday morning about 6:30 she lost consciousness and I think it never entirely returned tho she looked and seemed better for a few minutes--then suddenly took a turn for the worse again, and died about 9:15 A.M.
Dr. Brown and Mrs. Henry were here when she died.
Maud came down Friday P.M. She said she took great comfort in thinking we had such a good neighbor and one who knew so much of children and so well what to do in case of sickness. Her funeral was held in her grandfathers rooms on account of more room and he likes the idea of having her where he grandmother was last. She did look so sweet and pretty and peaceful tho rather thin for her.
Our house seems desolate without her but we are trying to feel that she is really better off and it is all for the best in the end. Everybody was so kind and were so many here and had so many flowers covered both graves plentifully. the bearer were Oscar Roberts, Frank Curtiss, Isa Miller & Frank Smedley. The They carried the casket to the grave from the house. Had the funeral at 4:30 Saturday afternoon, so Percy could come down for it. Aunt May & Agnes came too. Bulah made that pretty little dress just the week before so the little pet had that on. Mama is going to stay with me this week, till the sharpness wears off a little but we all have such pleasant memories of how bright and happy she was and are thankful to have had her even for such a short time. Will leave the rest for you when you get home, as we can say lots when we don't remember to write all at once. Belle.
