Esther Roberts, wife of John Martin
Donald Cooleyadded this on 11 Feb 2009
A genealogy of the family of Thomas Roberts of New Hampshire describes her as "Hester, wife of John Martin, and living in Jersey in 1673". Her given name appears in the Piscataway Town Records as Esther, Hester, and frequently as Easter. Three granddaughters, apparently named for her, appear in birth and death entries in the town records with their names as Esther or Easter. Since currently available information does not furnish conclusive proof of her given name, it will be assumed that her name is Esther which is the name used in the recording of her death.
The will of Easter (Esther) Martin of Piscataway, dated 9 November 1687 and proved 20 December 1687 names children John, Joseph, Thomas Martin, Mary Hull, Martha Langstaff, Lidia Smalley. and Benjamin Martin; and grandchildren Mary and Hope Hull (children of Hopewell Hull) as heirs to land in Piscataway Township and personal property. Son Benjamin Martin is named executor.
John MARTIN and Esther ROBERTS had the following children:
+ 2 i. Mary2 MARTIN was born circa 1646.
+ 3 ii. Martha MARTIN was born circa 1648.
+ 4 iii. John MARTIN was born circa 1650.
+ 5 iv. Joseph MARTIN was born circa 1652.
+ 6 v. Lydia MARTIN was born 1654.
+ 7 vi. Benjamin MARTIN was born circa 1656.
+ 8 vii. Thomas MARTIN was born circa 1659.
9 viii. James MARTIN was born in Piscataway, New Jersey 1669. James died March 21, 1676/7 in Piscataway, New Jersey at 7 years of age. He was interred March 1676/7 in Piscataway, New Jersey.

From GDMNH, p. 589 and Jacobsen, p. 25, 26: John resided in Dover where he was a Marshal of the Province by 1670 [discharged because of age in 1681-82]; served on the grand jury in 1683 and 1692; was elected selectman in 1664, 1665, 1668, 1673, 1674, and 1677; and served as surveyor of highways in 1661 and 1668. While constable he and his brother were charged by Massachusetts Bay authorities with ridding the colony of Quakers. In one recorded incident in 1662 he and his brothers dragged two proselytizing Quaker women through the winter snow and threw them into a canoe. He was one of six prominent Dover citizens who convened a convention with citizens of Portsmouth and Exeter, that covnention making a recommendation that New Hampshire be reunited under the government of Massachusetts. John died of dropsy.

Noyes et al (p. 589) list John as "presumably" the father of Thomas. Jacobsen, p. 21, also considers this as the more likely of two possibilities. Scales, p. 303, says "there is...a strong probability" that Thomas, not John was the father of the immigrant Thomas Roberts. The evidence with respect to John being the father is a report from Everett S. Stackpole "on excellent authority" to the effect that "a son of John Roberts, of Woolaston, Co. Worcestershire" was apprenticed to a fishmonger of London (History of Dover, p. 302). It is to be noted that there is a record of a Roberts line in Woolaston, Gloucestershire, but not in the inland county of Worcestershire. John is here listed as the father of Thomas, but this is only the more plausible of at least two alternatives. It is to be noted that Thomas (b. 1550) and Frances (James) Roberts of Kent had five children, one of whom was a Thomas (see Moore's "Edward Small and His Descendants", Vol 2, p. 1108).
The case for Thomas being the Immigrant Thomas' father is considerably weakened by the points made by Stephen Clifford Wilson (from http://www.glassenbury.blogspot.com/):
"Sir Thomas Roberts had issue by his wife Frances James.
"Their second son was Thomas Roberts, baptised at Cranbrook, Kent, October II 1590. He made his Will 23 November 1644 and it was proved by Walter Roberts 2 December 1647. In the Cranbrook Church Register there is an entry for a burial of a Thomas Roberts on May 3. 1645, which we may reasonably conclude refers to this man. His father had left him by Will the sum of £50 a year, which in 1641/2 became the subject of Chancery Proceedings {Charles 1st, R315}. In these proceedings reference is made to the complainant, Thomas Roberts, gentleman; to Sir Thomas Roberts, knight & baronet, his father and to Sir Walter Roberts. Peter Courthope is another party to the dispute. There are other Chancery Proceedings on more or less the same subject and with the same parties in 1641 {Charles 1st, R8/4} as in 1639 {Charles 1st, R38/50}.
"The Will of this Thomas Roberts "of Glassenbury, Kent, Esqr." {ref: P.C.C. 247 Fines}, mentions Sir Walter Roberts and "the Lady Roberts" his mother. He was unmarried. and had no children.
"Thus, the Thomas Roberts born in Woolaston, Worcestershire (about 1600) and emigrated to America, where he died in 1673 after having had issue through his wife (evidently married about 1627) Rebecca Hilton, cannot have been the second son, nor any son, of Sir Thomas Roberts of Glassenbury, Kent, and his wife Frances James. The various American and French web-sites which claim this relationship take into consideration neither the fact that their Tom Roberts was born in Worcestershire, the only claimed child of this Kent family to have been born there; nor that Worcestershie is a long way from Kent; nor that the Roberts of Glassenbury had no ancestral connection with that western county. Worcestershire is, on the other hand, nearer Wales, where Roberts was and is one of the commonest names, as is Thomas.
Neither have they taken into account the fact that the Irish Roberts of Glassenbury family of baronets (now resident in the USA) used to claim descent from the very same Thomas Roberts that the American websites claim. That descent was considered not capable of proof by Garter King at Arms, and accordingly a new Baronetage was created for the Irish Roberts family in 1809. The latest (1999) "Burke's Peerage" entry for the family claims no such descent."

General Notes: Child - Thomas Roberts
Thomas Roberts is one of the founding fathers of New Hampshire, with Edward Hilton an original settler in Dover in 1623, the first permanent settlement in New Hampshire. He was, with Edward Hilton, a fellow member of the Fishmongers Company of London and was sent to establish a fishing station under the auspices of the Council of New England, the Council which had been granted most of northern New England by King James I. He was elected 'President of the Court,' an office agency for the Bristol Company, the proprietors of Dover. He signed the Dover Combination October 22, 1640 and in March 1640 was chosen Governor, or President, of the County in place of Governor John Underhil, a position he held until Dover (then Northam) came under Massachusetts rule in 1643. He served on the grand jury 1643, 1646 and 1656. In 1661 he was fined by the town of Dover for missing meetings for thirteen days and ordered to forfeit one cow. In 1662 he publicly rebuked his sons, both constables of Dover, for their harsh treatment of the local Quakers (see Jacobsen, p. 21, 22).

I exchange data with people who have a interlocking marriage
into any surnames that interlocks into any of the branches
of my families.I started when I was 10 years old now 68years.
I am sharing my data in the interest of collaborative research.
I do this to help people to find there lineages and to fill
the pedigree charts.
I have not personally researched all families listed; dates
and information are subject to verification. Not responsible
for typographical errors misplaced citations. Missing
sources/references are because of my learning curve, not my
intention. You are encouraged to seek further documention
for your own confirmation.Further I have no control what
other people include about their families in any of the
data that they exchange.
If there are no dates about the living, then the computers
can not determine if the person is alive or deceased.
The sites set the living anywhere from 75 to 100 years
depending on the laws of the countries that they are in.
When I exchange with lineages the living are sometime shown
depending on who you are exchanging with, but my
request is that,if you update any of my data to the
internet, you also set the do not show the living, before
you update to the internet.
Also place in the source your contact email
address, and the lineage, so people can contact you
reqarding your update.
I have no claim to owning the data, except that which is
my immediate lineage, and even that is worked on by many
members of my family lineages. It is only as good as what
people put into it,that exchange with me. So look
in the notes of the genealogy for origin, if they put it
there,or the source.
If you are going to correct, update or put new branches on the
lineage your are inquirying about, please do not add from what
I have sent you,(This just duplicates how many more people
I have to find in the duplicates and merge them, edit your
notes to ensure that there is nothing there that you do not
want published.
Also do not submit information on copyrights that invades the
privacy of others especially for a relative that has not given
you permission to publish same.
Remember nothing is carved in stone except time.
The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriages, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 631,749 people via interlocking
marriages.
My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.

NOTICE: "the posting of portions of General Bezaleel Thayer's 1874 Thayer genealogy ... has recently come to my attention. In many many instances his publication is in error. It is known as "The Disaster of 1874" in knowledgeable genealogical circles. I have published an errata to this work that includes just lineage mistakes alone. He assigned many of the wrong people to the wrong parents and even married individuals to the wrong spouses.
"If the reader wishes to verify, aside from my word, or that of my assistant, Jerry Thayer, it would be better for them to go to the works of someone who had checked with ORIGINAL sources. The best I can suggest is the unpublished manuscript of Waldo Chamberlain Sprague located in the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, MA; or at the Braintree Historical Society in Braintree, MA."

General Notes: Wife - Deliverance Robie
