The history of the Perkins family starts with Pierre de Morlaix because it is he that both established the line in England and provided the first name from which the Perkins surname was derived. Pierre's surname was deMorlaix in contemporary Latin & French records of 14th century England. French was the language of the royalty, Latin that of the Church in these years after The Conqueror. Anglo-Saxon English was the language of the peasant class and would not be used for official records for many years to come. Thus, later translations of these French & Latin records into English turned the surname into "de Morlaix", "de Morley" and finally, "Morley"
James Perkins tells: "...His name indicates that although originally from Morlaix, Normandie, France he was part of the Celtic/Welsh group previously mentioned who migrated to England. During this time period surnames were not in common use. Everybody was known by some personal characteristic such as what they did, who there father was or where they came from, hence Pierre de Morlaix was from Morlaix, France...[3]" At the time less than 200 years removed from William the Conqueror these western parts of France were considered to be pieces of the British Empire. Of course, the British monarchs of the time were also more French than English. French was the language, and the lineage, of royalty great & small.
During Pierre's lifetime, political fortune changed when Charles V "The Black", Prince of France renewed the hostilities of the Hundred Years' War between England & France. Having a French surname was no longer politically or personally expedient, and so "Pierre de Morlaix" became "Peter Morley."
The date of Pierre's move to England from France is currently unknown, but he settled in Shropshire upon his arrival. He soon obtained a position with the powerful noble Hugh DeSpencer, eventually becoming High Steward of the latter's Oxfordshire estate. The DeSpencer family has a storied history itself going backwards & forward from Hugh (or Hugo). Hugh's father also known as "Hugh the Younger" was a favorite of King Edward II, but fell afoul of Isabella & Mortimer when they invaded the country and was brutally executed by them as a traitor in 1326. After this, the family name morphed from Despenser to DeSpencer or De Spencer. By the 1400s, French surnames having fallen out of favor, the family was merely called "Spencer" and eventually produced the Princess later Lady Diana.
It is likely that Pierre de Morlaix knew members of the DeSpencer family from his days in France, since the DeSpencer family's French lands were in the Morlaix region. This would also explain Pierre's quick rise to power within the DeSpencer household. A Senschal (High Steward) was not only the trusted keeper of the household; but was not unlike the Consigliare of a Mafia don. In records, he is variously referred to as "serviens" and "sevients" to the DeSpencers.

King Malcolm III of Scotland (Mèl Coluim mac Donnchada), (1031 – Novemb
er 13, 1093) also known as Cenn Mór (Anglicized as Canmore) meaning 'Big H
ead' inthe then Scottish language. "Malcolm" is an anglicization deriv
ed from a Latin form, Malcolmus. The name Mèl Coluim means 'Servant of Co
lumba', after the devotional pattern of many medieval Scottish names ( c
/f Mèl Ísu' (Malise), 'servant of Jesus' or Gilla Coluim, also 'serva
nt of Columba'). He was the eldest son of King Duncan I and first ki
ng of the House of Dunkeld.
In 1040 his father was killed in battle by his cousin Macbeth who became t
he new king. Malcolm found refuge in the Kingdom of England under the prot
ection of KingHarthacanute of Denmark and England. In 1042 Harthacanute d
ied and was succeeded to the throne of England by his half-brother King Ed
ward the Confessor. In 1053 Edward finally agreed to help Malcolm gain t
he throne of Scotland by offering him an army. Malcolm's invasion of Scotl
and started in the same year. Malcolm found support from the nobles of Sou
thern Scotland. He managed to kill first Macbeth in 1057 and then his succ
essor King Lulach I of Scotland in1058. He then succeeded Lulach as kin
g. He was crowned at Scone Abbey, Perthshire, on April 25, 1058. He marri
ed Ingibjorg, widow of the Earl of Orkney, in about 1065 and they had thr
ee sons, who were:

3. Malcolm (Mèl Coluim) (d. after 1094).
Ingibjörg was dead by 1070, when he wed Margaret.
He agreed on an alliance with England, sealed by his (second) marria
ge to Saint Margaret, Edgar Ætheling's sister. Margaret herself promoted t
he Roman Catholic Church in Scotland throughout Malcolm's reign. At that t
ime, Christianity did exist in Scotland in the form of the Celtic Churc
h, but varied from Roman Catholic practice in some respects e.g. the dati
ng of Easter and the shape of monks' tonsures. Malcolm had several so
ns by Margaret - these became known as the Margaretsons. Malcolm and Marga
ret's children were:

Malcolm unsuccessfully tried to stop this influence by waging wars again
st the Norman kings of England after 1066. In 1072 he was forced to gi
ve an oath of subservience to William I of England. It is notable that whi
le his first wife Ingibjorg's sons all bore Gaelic names, half of Margaret
's bore Anglo-Saxon/English names and the other half standard continent
al names. At the time this was noted with displeasure amongst many in t
he Scottish court and amongst the public.
His war against William II of England in 1093 only led to the loss of Scot
tish territory to England. Malcolmdied on November of the same ye
ar in an ambush at Alnwick during a battle against William's army. His eld
est son by Margaret, Edward, also died in that ambush. Malcolm was succeed
ed by his brother Donald.
Malcolm established the Dunkeld dynasty which ruled Scotland from 1058 unt
il 1286. Four of his sons (Duncan II, Edgar, Alexander I, and David I) bec
ame kings of Scotland, whilst a fifth (Edmund) ruled as co-ruler of Scotla
nd with his uncle Donald III.

General Notes: Wife - Gertrude Saucier
Millinocket - Gertrude Morneault, 95, wife of the late Theodule Morneault, died Friday, November 23, 2007 at a Millinocket hospital. She was born April 30, 1912 in St. Hilaire, New Brunswick, the daughter of Alcime and Elizabeth (Soucy) Saucier. Gertrude is survived by four children, Maurice Morneault and his wife Elaine of Millinocket, Remi Morneault and his wife Rita of Hampden, Marie Foster of Millinocket, and Armand Morneault of Rockville, Connecticut; a brother, Adrian Saucier of Mexico, New York; a sister, Leone Barry of Pompano Beach, Florida; fifteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband, Gertrude was predeceased by a daughter, Lucille Perry, a son in law, Robert I. Foster, five brothers and two sisters. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 P.M. Sunday at the Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by her grandson, Rev. Dominic Foster, T.O.R., 11 A.M. Monday, November 26 at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 112 Maine Avenue, Millinocket. Interment will be at the Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Gertrude may be sent to the Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field St., Millinocket, ME 04462.
