General Notes: Husband - Aaron B. Delong Sr.
Aaron DeLong Sr was a member of Loyal American Regiment(LAR) under Major Barclay's Company.
He was born in New York. As of yet no one has been able to trace who his parents (as well as brothers Simon and John) were. Bill Tufts hassome evidence that the three brothers are descended from
Arie's grandson Conrad, According to "Our First Families" the three brothers are descended from Nicholas & Johanna(Dolsen) DeLong.
Aaron,Simon and John show in Loyalist Muster Roll commanded by Colonel Beverly Guanus- May 11,1782 (National Library of Canada in Ottawa, Canada File no 4218-c4219) as the following:
Aaron DeLong(Private) John DeLong(Private) and Simon DeLong- Major Barclay's Agent- believe he only 15 at the time.
Aaron and John came to New Brunswick in 1783-1784 on ship called "TheAnn". Aaron was born in 1750 or 1757(according to St Martins's Families- a Quaco Heritage by David Howard.) Aaron died
prior to 1851 in Millstream , New Brunswick prior to 1851 NB Census.
Aaron first lived in Gagetown after arrival in NB in 1783. By 1786/1787 he had moved to Kennebecasis River (near Gondola Point, NB) and by 1801(probably earlier than 1799) had moved to Millstream(North of Sussex, NB) He was given a land grant at 38 Millstream, Studholm Parish, Kings Co, NB 400 acres 1809/12/11 Vol. E No 517.- (from Natural Resources- Land Grants)
The Following is taken from notes of Bill Tufts, Gloucester, Ontario.:
In 1816 Aaron Sr. sold his land and this appears to be about the timehis children started moving in different directions in the family's break up. John and Charles G. moved to Sheffield Parish and lived
at Little River(aka Ripples) Hezekiah and Aaron were in St Martins by1820. Hezekiah married Elizabeth McCumber and lived in St Martins East. He is buried in family cemetery on this property. Across the road was his brother Aaron and Aaron father -in -law, Jacob Berry (in the Berry Burial Ground) Aaron Jr's property at Bayview was bounded on the south by the Bay of Fundy. he became engaged In he shipbuilding trade and was mostly involved with the schooners used in the coastal
trade with New England. Records of several vessels appears in the Saint John Registry listing him as builder and sometimes as Captain.
Aaron's own property was unsuitable for shipbuilding because of the sheer cliffs along the shore, but his father-in-law's shoreline was ideal. Along the eastern edge of Jacob Berry's land was Berry Brook, which emptied into the Bay just below the Berry Burial Ground at Berry Beach. The descent there was more gradual and a spit of land between thebrook and the Bay allowed for shipbuilding either on the spit
or behind it in the stream. Even in 1985 when Bill Tufts visited the site the remnants were mostly grown over of what was once a timber slide. It was down this sluiceway that the logs used in a ship's
construction were sent careening down to the building site.
Aaron's daughter, Sarah Ann, married a sea captain, William Tufts. Hedrowned in Saint John Harbour in 1870 and she married again to Abner Clarke. In the early 1890's, the Clarke s moved to Fredericton and Aaron Sr followed them in 1895. He died in 1896 and is buried in an unmarked
grave at the Sunnybank Cemetery in Fredericton.
Jacob Berry DeLong, Aaron's son, became a sea captain, but also followed in his father's footsteps, building and refitting ships and it wasJacob's son, James, who continued the family tradition well into
the 20th century. Some of the notebooks and records of the two men may now be viewed in the St Martin's museum.
A brother to Jacob B. DeLong was Edward DeLong, a ship Carpenter. He married two sisters of the Captain William Tufts and in return for part ownership in vessels, helped the Tufts to build a few vessels probably at Long Beach, St Martins East. He died of sunstroke in 1898 in a Staten Island, New York, shipyard and is buried in the Berry Burying Ground in Bay View, St Martins East.[
General Notes: Wife - Mary Keirstead
Possible date of Mary Keirstead's death- 1873 (Millstream, Kings Co.,NB)- from W DeLong(Maine) She was reported to be 103 when she died so this is possible.
General Notes: Child - Catherine Delong
Kings Co Marriage Register shows Catherine DeLong(a Spinster) from Sussex married Richard Perkins(From Sussex- a Farmer) witness Lewis Frazee & William Kelly On the sixth day of December, in the year 1813, a marriage took place in the parish of Sussex, Kings County, New Brunswick, between Richard Perkins and Catherine DeLong.
Catherine was four years older than Richard, who was only nineteen atthe time. It is fairly certain that, this man, Richard, was the same person who, on the 25th of April in 1827, petitioned for land in a grant in which he was depicted as being: ". . . a British subject, bornin the Province, where he has always resided, aged 33 years, is married, and has six sons and a
daughter . . ." Though there is much to be desired in the quantity and the type of records available to researchers in New Brunswick in order to make the needed parental connections, due to the foregoing petition and many of the census records, and by use of the process of elimination,
there is very little doubt that the Richard Perkins and Catherine DeLong who were married in 1813 were the parents of Isaac Perkins who married Mary Jane Buchanan in August of 1850. These last two people were the great-grandparents of my mother, Ellen Theresa Perkins.
The parents of Richard Perkins has not yet been resolved, but at the present time all leads point to the Loyalist Isaac Perkins who settledin New Brunswick in 1783 and came from either New York or New Jersey.I would appreciate hearing from anyone reading this who knows any
more about him. Thus, this writing is mainly concerned with Catherineand I will show a few of the reasons for selecting her parents from the records.
Fortunately, there were fewer men with the surname of DeLong who settled in New Brunswick as Loyalists in the last part of the 18th centurythan those with the surname of Perkins. The four known men with the name DeLong that can be shown were in New Brunswick were: Aaron, John, Simon, and Abram. All had served in the Loyal American Regiment. Thanks to the diligence of William Tufts of Ontario we now know that the first three were brothers, that they had served in this regiment for six years, from 1777 to 1783.John
DeLong, a Sargeant, settled at Long Island on the St. John River in 1783, Simon went to Nova
Scotia to settle, and Aaron, who arrived in Gagetown in 1785, possibly lived on the Kingston Peninsula for some years before he eventuallysettled down at Millstream in Sussex parish.
On April 12, 1785, Aaron DeLong petitioned for Lot #20 at Gagetown and less than a year later, on the 26th of January of 1786, along with Rufus Green, John Bookhout, Isaac Hall, and John Green, he petitioned for 250 acres in the interior on Hammond River. They claimed they weresome of the first Loyalists who emigrated and yet they: "remained unprovided for with lands except Rufus Green who drew a lot of about 90 acres which is very
inconsiderable as he has a large family." This petition was granted by council on 26 January 1787 provided ". . . they do not interfere with the subscribers to the west of Moreland Road." Later petitions, however, showed
this land vacant in 1809, Aaron having moved on to Millstream.
Both Aaron and Simon had daughters named Catherine, Simon's daughter being born in 1786 and Aaron's daughter born, 29 October 1789. In the census of 1851, Catherine's age is listed as 61 years and, thus, she was born about 1790 and certainly not in 1786. In addition, both Aaron DeLong and Richard Perkins, by the early 1800's had settled in the same area of Studholm Millstream which can be proved by various land grants. Their 400 acre tracts
abutted each other and were about five miles north and a little west of the village of Sussex where Catherine and Richard were married.
From these facts and others the conclusion can finally be reached that the Catherine DeLong who married Richard Perkins in 1813 is withouta doubt the daughter of Aaron DeLong and his wife, Mary Kierstede. And it is through Catherine's parents that we are able to trace our ancestral lines all the way back to New Amsterdam and beyond. Catherine and Richard are known to have had eight children, including, Isaac, whowas born in 1822. Isaac's gravestone, located in the United Baptist Church Cemetery in Centrefield,
Carleton County, New Brunswick in the area that used to be called Perkins Corner, has inscribed on it the following:
Isaac Perkins
Died May 2, 1885 age 63 years
Mary Jane Perkins
born 1830 - - Died 1904
'The praise of him who sleeps in earth,
The pleasant memory of his worth.
The hope to meet when life is past.
Shall cheer the sorrowing heart at last
The other children in Richard and Catherine's family were: Catherine Born. 5/6/1815 ;
Aaron Born. 1817/18 ; David ; John Born. 1824 ; Joel Born. 1827 ; Charles Born. 1830 ; and another son whose name remains unknown.
In the census of 1861 for Carleton County, Richard Perkins is listed with the family of his son-in-law, John Clarke and we can assume his wife, Catherine, has died. Ten years later, Richard can be found once again, listed in the census, but now residing with his son John and hiswife, Frances Sharpe. At this time Richard is 76 years old and we never see his name again.
With the establishment of the relationship of Richard Perkins and Catherine DeLong and with the discovery of Catherine's parents we are nowable to focus our attention on two main branches of our ancestral tree for it is through Aaron DeLong and Mary Kierstede that my own descendants carry the genes of the people who settled New Amsterdam and theHudson River
Valley and then migrated again to settle the wild forests of New Brunswick.
Notes :: Info above from "Ancestors That Led Me to New Amsterdam" by Ted Brassard Info on Catherine DeLong and Mary Kierstede(Kierstead)
General Notes: Child - John Nesbit Delong
Fr Bill Tufts:
John's middle name appears in Mormon Records as Reuban and it also appeared in family records. His sons identified him as John N DeLong andJohn Nesbet DeLong(tombstone also shows John N). Tradition in his mother's family said that he had a sister, Catherine, who remarried in the US and
married a John Nesbet. The same IGI Records show a marriage of a Catherine Kierstead at Long Island, NY to a John Neesley(probably error inreading).
Mary's parents were probably the Loyalist John Lunn and Mary..., who were geographically in the right place. John Lunn of Prince of Wales Regiment was granted lot 26, 171 A, Maquapit Lake, Sheffield parish.
Mary died before 1891 Census.
Was living in Sheffield at time of marriage. Witness Hicks Seamans and John Darling. Fr Sunbury Co Marriages 1766-1888. John moved to Carleton Co and male line died out (Fr Bill Tufts0 From Wayne DeLong-( Maine) shows John Nesbitt DeLong(a farmer) and Mary Ann Lunn had 2 children: (1) James William DeLong (born 1824)- I shows as son of John (Loyalist) and (2)Charles
H DeLong (b about 1823-New Brunswick occupation- Engineer) d Mar 26,1904 Littleton,Maine
Possible birth date of John Nesbitt Delong is November 11,1797(

Elizabeth McCumber evolved from the Macomber/Macumber. the family moved in 1796 to St Martins, Saint John County from Newport, NS. William bought a point of loan from Jacob Berry in 1813 that is marked by the caves carved into it by the tides. It was first sighted by Samuel de
Champlain who named it for the French King "Louis Head" . It was first called Macomber Point and later McCumber Point. A "comber" is a rolling wave on the ocean or it can mean a roll, such as a comber of wool.

Charles appears on 1881 Fredericton Census, presumably had moved herein later years. Descendent James K DeLong claims tradition that Charles was over 90 years of age when he died- therefore died 1885-1891(noton 1891Cenus)
It appears Charles married a second time to Pamelia (Purmelia) Chase
Another possible son- he is buried in same cemetery as Charles's son Thomas"s wife- Mary Ann
but age is stated as 18 in 1846- which means born in 1828=too young to be their son of Thomas

The following info is on the Berry House-
Annie Berry married Aaron Delong and their son Jacob lived here is
1783. It was built by H. Bradshaw and the Bradshaw shipyard was located
here. The Delong's built ships here- property is now partly owned by the Henderson's.
The Delong house was located at 19 Salmon River Rd. James bought thishouse at the "Creek" in 1881 It is the first house after you come across the covered bridge- the house and one barn still exist today.
Prior to James Delong moving here, the house was derelict. The large barn was used as a community horse stable, free of charge, until James's cow was let loose in the village to make room for a horse in her stead. It is said that horses used to be brought into the house to get water from a tap which came from a gravity fed spring. Rachel Delong married Captain Harold Walter. Nancy (Wasson/Geldart) Sears recallsher grandparents telling of the great fire in 1900. It was time whenthey were left on their own as their parents both went to fight the fire. Flames could be seen from the house and they were very frightened. Annie Delong inherited it from her father and Annie,
Rachael, Walter and Harold lived here until their deaths this time
Rachel's daughter inherited from her Aunt Annie. Rachel's daughter was Elouise Wasson/Geldart. Upon her death the ho use was sold to Judy Ashfield who would become the third family to own it.At one time a
blacksmith shop was here at this site. Nancy Sears still resides on part of James Delong's property overlooking the bay. At one time cattleused to roam in the fields here. Margaret inherited part of the old Berry property from her mother.
.
Part of that came from an article in the book "Looking Back At St. Martins"
published by The St. Martins Community Access Centre.
Annie Delong was a well known teacher in the village. The library at the
St. Martins School is in Memorial to Annie Delong.

After attending school in East Brighton, Harold, as a young man, worked on farms and in
lumber mills in Carleton County. He and Alma were married in the United Baptist
Parsonage in Hartland by Rev. Hedley Bragdon. Twenty-nine years later, in 1940, they
moved with their family from Carleton to Charlotte Co., N.B., where he continued to work
mainly in lumbering operations. In 1944 they bought a farm on MT. Pleasant Street in St.
George, which he and his sons have operated since.
During the Second World War he was employed at the Utopia Army Camp near St.
George, and from about 1960 he worked as a carpenter in and around his home town. The
large farmhouse on MT. Pleasant Street was renovated to provide accommodation for their
son Cedric and his family, with a separate apartment for Harold and Alma.
Alma's father, George DeLong, was a farmer and lived with his family at Bloomfield,
Carleton Co., N.B. He was born in 1887, and died in Nov. 1939. His wife Eva, a daughter
of Thomas and Laura Ketch, was born 24 Sep 1891 and died 7 Dec 1970. They were
buried in the Charleston Cemetery.
Harold and Alma's 50th wedding anniversary announcement was publishedin The
Observer (Hartland, N.B.), 12 Sep 1979, p. 10.

Tradition indicates that Jacob Berry , an English immigrant in 1789, came from a very wealthy family. Believe he was from Sefton, Lancashire where his brothers grave was located in 1996.

Shall cheer the sorrowing heart at last
The other children in Richard and Catherine's family were: Catherine Born. 5/6/1815 ;

Born: 1757 - Albany NY Baptized: Died: 1844 - Millstream, Kings Co. New Brunswick Buried:Spouse: Mary Keirstead 10 11 Marr: November 10, 1788 - Kings County, New Brunswick
General Notes: Child - Aaron B.

Raised in the early Spring of 1777 by wealthy Beverley Robinson, the
LOYAL AMERICAN REGIMENT consisted almost entirely of New York loyalists from lower Duchess and Westchester Counties. Robinson
managed sixty thousand acres and 146 tenant farms in Dutchess County. Not surprisingly, his own tenants (and relatives) accounted for a large
percentage of the soldiers and officers of the regiment.

Robinson, a childhood friend of George Washington, was one of the wealthiest men in the New York colony and like any good leader, he playedthe game of politics well by eventually gaining access to British
Commander-in-Chief Sir Henry Clinton. Robinson quickly became Clinton's friend and trusted advisor.
"Once more unto the breach!" (from Henry V)
Robinson's men were quick to distinguish themselves. The LOYAL AMERICAN REGIMENT participated in the storming of Forts Montgomery and Clinton in the fall of 1777. First to enter Fort Montgomery was Captain George
Turnbull of the LOYAL AMERICAN REGIMENT. Turnbull took command of Major Grant's company of New York Volunteers when Grant himself was killed before the attack on the fort commenced. Sir Henry Clinton subsequently made Turnbull Lieutenant-Colonel of the New York Volunteers

The LAR was garrisoned variously at Kingsbridge (near present-day West 230th Street and Marble Hill Avenue) and Bloomingdale (close to present-day Columbia University) on Manhattan Island as well as a stint
on Long Island at Flushing NY (referred to as Flushing Fly in LAR muster rolls and various Loyalist orderly books).
Click for Lossing's 1840's sketch of Kingsbridge
Men from the regiment were frequently detached to serve with other regiments -- usually for light infantry warfare. There are three distinct examples of note:
In 1777, Captain Joshua Barnes and his company of the LAR were detached as marksmen to Emmerick's Chasseurs under the command of Andreas Emmerick and were present at Fort Montgomery in 1777. "Certain light infantry troops were known as Jagers in the German army and as chasseurs in the French and British army. Even the Germans, however, used the term chasseurs for those Jagers who were part of a regiment, as opposedto
those who were in Von Wurmb's Jager Corps." (Boatner, Encyclopedia of the American Revolution)
In 1779, British Captain Patrick Ferguson took in members of the LAR to serve as rangers and riflemen on his ill-fated expedition to South Carolina -- an expedition which ended in disaster at King's Mountain.
Lieutenant Anthony Allaire2 of the LAR was at King's Mountain and kept a diary which became an important record of the British prospective of the battle. Allaire was taken prisoner by the rebels and treatedreasonably well although he disliked a congregation of Presbyterians who forced him to listen to one of their sermons. "Horse thieves all,"wrote Allaire.3
Finally, Captain Morris (son of Beverley) Robinson's company was detached to the corps known as the Provincial Light Infantry under British Lt. Col. John W. Watson of the Brigade of Foot Guards. It is interesting to note LAR
influence. Thomas Barclay, the Major for the LAR, served as the Majorof the Provincial Light Infantry.
Political Intrigue
Besides commanding his regiment, Colonel Beverley Robinson was also deeply involved in the treason of Benedict Arnold. Sometime in 1779, Robinson wrote the following in a letter to Arnold which urged him to
help England end the war:
"It is necessary that a decisive advantage should put Britain in a condition to dictate the terms of reconciliation . . .
There is no one but General Arnold who can surmount obstacles so great as these. A man of so much courage will never despair of the republic, even when every door to a reconciliation seems sealed. Render, then,
brave General, this important service to your country . . . Let us put an end to so many calamities. You and ourselves have the same origin, the same
language, the same laws . . . Beware, then, of breaking forever the links and ties of a friendship whose benefits are proven . . . United in equality, we will rule the universe, we will hold it bound, not by arms and violence
but by the ties of commerce -- the lightest and most gentle bonds that human kind can wear."4
Exile
When the war ended in defeat for the Crown, loyalists were forced to leave America. As part of the mass exodus to Canada, the LOYAL AMERICAN REGIMENT left New York City5 in the transport ships Ann
and Apollo and headed to Fredericton, New Brunswick where they received a land grant known as Block 12. Once there, the men of the regiment
started their lives over. Some stayed. Some moved on to other parts of Canada.
The upheaval in their lives certainly didn't go unnoticed. In later years, Major Thomas Barclay of the LOYAL AMERICAN REGIMENT wrote of his former American neighbours6:
"I find that those who were termed Royalists or Loyalists, in addition to their attachment to their king and country, preserve their principles of honor and integrity, of openness and sincerity, which markedthe American previous to the year 1773; while those who have sold their king for a Republican Government, have adopted all the frivolity, intrigue, and insincerity of the French, and in relinquishing their allegiance, resigned at the same time, almost universally, religion andmorality."7
A harsh, but revealing statement of loyalist mind set.

THE RECREATED REGIMENT
Under the able command of Captain Drew Smith, the LOYAL AMERICAN REGIMENT (Light Company/Marksmen) strives to portray soldiers who are proficient with the manual of arms but are also able to adapt to any fighting
condition, whether in the field or in the woods, with lightning speedand agility. The Advanced Guard: Its purpose & practice
We portray the LAR as we believe they would have looked in the early war (1777-1779) with a particular emphasis on Captain Barnes' company when they were detached as marksmen to Emmerick's Chasseurs.
Our shortened green coats are faced red8 (the regiment seems to havedefinitely changed over to red coats by early 1780). As opposed to
blindly imitating what official sources state was issued (or ordered), we have made a conscious decision that our clothing and accoutrements will reflect realistic modifications made while in the field as well as the use of occasional captured equipment.
Light infantry tactics are used and, therefore, a degree of physical exertion is inevitable. Frankly, we run around a lot -- something to keep in mind. Also, you'll have to endure the comments of friends who think
you are completely insane because you wear a wool uniform in the middle of summer heat waves.
As a member, you can make your own clothing and accoutrements if you wish but you will have to pass inspection by the commander.
A brief look at gaitered-trousers/ trousers & cut-down coats.
With regimental headquarters in Borden town NJ, the LOYAL AMERICAN REGIMENT (Light Company/Marksmen) has a membership throughout the Mid-Atlantic area. We heartily invite you to take the King's shilling!

Present at Stony Point in 1779, Lieutenant William Marshall was the acting Engineer of Defences when he was captured by the Americans on July 16, 1779. While interned at Lancaster PA in 1780, he drew a map ofthe action at Stony Point where he recognized the LOYAL AMERICAN REGIMENT as having green coats faced red. The original of this map is to be found at the PA Historical. Society. We feel very confident that someone who was actually there -- an important officer whose job involved precise observation and attention to detail -- would be able to correctly discern the colors of the regimental coats in his fort. Provincial Regiments
The Loyal American Regiments
This corps was raised almost entirely by the efforts of Colonel Beverley Robinson, a wealthy citizen of Duchess County on the Hudson river. Its officers and men were nearly all natives of the Province of NewYork. A few
months after its organization the regiment took part in the expedition of Sir Henry Clinton against Forts Clinton and Montgomery. With little more than raw recruits, formed a part of the column that stormed and captured Fort
Montgomery. After their return to New York they formed part of the garrison there.
They took part in the campaign in Pennsylvania and assisted in the capture of Stoney Point on the Hudson River May 30th, 1779. Afterwards they were engaged in the campaign in the south under Lord Cornwallis. They
suffered very heavily at the disastrous battle of King's Mountain where a band of the loyalist troops, out numbered by their enemies and surrounded on all sides, were obliged to surrender.
Col. Robinson had, as his Lieutenant Colonel, his son Beverly Robinson and others of his sons were officers in the kings service in one or other of the provincial corps. Thomas Barclay was major and Rev. John Beardsley
rector of Poughkeepsie on the Hudson was chaplain. At the close of the war part of the Loyal American Regiment went to Nova Scotia and theremainder
settled on the St. John river.
Col. Beverley Robinson died in England. His son, Lieut Col. Robinson at the peace went with other loyalists to Shelburne but afterwards removed to New Brunswick and settled at Nashwaaksis in the parish of Douglas where his descendants still reside. Many of the officers and menof this corps who settled in the province made their influence felt in their respective communities. Rev. John Beardsley was rector of Maugerville. He was the ancestor of the Beardsley s of Woodstock. Dr. Peter Huggeford, a
surgeon of the corps, was in early days a leading physician at St. John. Captain Christopher Hatch was a magistrate and colonel of militiaat St. Andrews where he died in 1819 aged 75 years. Capt. Lemuel Wilmot,
grandfather of the late Lieutenant Governor L. A. Wilmot, settled near Fredericton. Lieut. Anthony Allaire settled at Douglas, York
County, where he died in 1839 aged 84 years; his diary which he kept during the southern campaign has been lately published by Dr. Lyman Draper in
his book on "King's Mountain and its heroes."
Lieut. John Ward was a prominent St. John merchant an active and useful citizen; he was interested in steam boating, and one of the first boats that ran between Fredericton and Woodstock was named after him; he died in St.
John in 1846 in his 93rd year, the oldest Hal pay officer in New Brunswick. Captain William Baillie died near Fredericton in 1832 aged 97 years. The great age attained by many of these half pay officers is very remarkable.
The Loyalist Regiments Leave New York
The number of Loyalists who left the United States at the close of the American Revolution has been variously estimated. Judge Thomas Jones, the Loyalist historian, says that Sir Guy Carleton sent away from New York
100,000 persons; perhaps 70,000 would be nearer the mark. But be thenumber less or more, the British commander-in-chief was obliged to put forth his utmost exertions to provide for the establishment of theLoyalists in their new homes in the various parts of the world whither they desired to go. And busily engaged as he was the summer days of 1783 sped all too quickly, both for Sir Guy and, as the events proved, for the Loyalists as well. Refugees made their way from all partsof the old colonies to
New York where they embarked for all parts of the world -- some going to England, Scotland and Ireland, some to Canada, some to Nova Scotia and
Cape Breton, some to Newfoundland and the Island of St. John's (now Prince Edward Island).
Those who had independent means formed companies and hired vessels for themselves; those impoverished by the event of the war were sent in fleets of transport ships to their several destinations by the British government.
By the close of the summer the great majority of the loyal exiles had sailed from New York to their future homes.
Meanwhile the Provincial Regiments still remained. Sir Guy Carleton had been exceedingly anxious to hasten their departure, but the late arrival of the King's instructions relative to their disbandment, and the scarcity of
transports rendered delay in avoidable. As already mentioned, Amos Botsford and his associates, and a little later Col. Edward Winslow,
Muster-Master-General of the Provincial forces, had been sent to explore the St. John river with a view to the settlement of the loyal regiments in that locality. Gen. Fox, commander of the forces at Halifax, personally visited
the St. John river accompanied by Col. Winslow as his private secretary, and it is probable that upon their recommendation and that of Surveyor General Charles Morris, the general locations were assigned to the loyal corps.
The King's American Dragoons had arrived at St. John before the closeof the summer, and General Fox at once sent them to the tract of land allotted them in the parish of Prince William. This action was commended by Sir
Guy Carleton, who wrote, "It was well judged to send the King's American Dragoons to the lands allotted to them as they will find great advantage in being placed on them so early in the season." In SeptemberGeneral Fox visited the settlement founded by this corps, and issued the following order for its disbandment:
John was granted 13 acres at No 51 Long Island, Hampstead, Queens Co., NB

"The Loyalists and Their First New Brunswick Winter""
The first winter in New Brunswick was long remembered by the loyalists. Those who came early in the season were able to build log houses which, though rude structures in comparison with former dwellings, enabled them to pass the cold weather with comfort. But the later arrivals were not so fortunate. When they arrived they found that scarcely any preparations had been made for their reception. At Parrtown, Portland and Carleton every habitation was crowded, and up the river S. John the houses of the old inhabitants at Gagetown, Sheffield and Maugerville were in many cases filled to overflowing with as many of the loyalists as could find accommodation.
During the month of October many of the disbanded soldiers pushed their way up the Saint John transporting their few possessions in boats provided by government. But the season was cold and wet and the hardships and exposure very great.
Mrs. Mary Bradley in her curious old autobiography describes the effect produced in her mind by the arrival of the loyalists. She was living at the time in the lower part of the township of Maugerville, now known as Sheffield. "My heart," she says, "was filled with pity and affection when I saw them in a strange land without house or home, and many of them were sick and helpless. I often looked at them when they passed by in boats in rainy weather and wished for them to call and refresh themselves and was glad when they did so." She adds that during the winter one of the loyalist families occupied a part of her father'shouse.
Colonel Richard Hewlett seeing the impossibility of disbanding the loyalist corps at their several locations, as originally intended by SirGuy Carleton, was compelled to disband them at St. John, urging them at the same time to make the best provision they could for the approaching winter. The more adventurous spirits pressed on up the river, some finding shelter in the houses of the old settlers, while others took possession of the abandoned French settlements at Grimross and St. Anne's Point, where they set about building huts and repairing the ruined dwellings of the Acadians, but before they had made much progress the snow was on the ground and the winter frost in the air. They then endured the greatest hardships, their situation being at times rendered well nigh desperate in consequence of the non arrival of supplies expected up the river before the close of navigation. Frequently the stout hearted fathers and sons of the little colony at St. Anne's had tojourney from fifty to a hundred miles with toboggans through wild woods or on the ice to procure a precarious supply of food for their famishing families. Women, delicately reared, cared for their children beneath canvas tents rendered habitable only by the banks of snow which lay six feet deep in the open spaces of the forest, and as one said whohad as a child passed through the terrible experience of that first winter: "There were times when strong proud men wept like children and lay down in their snow bound tents to die.
A few of the pioneer settlers doubtless found shelter among the French Acadians of whom there were then several families living near Springhill, others may have passed the winter at Prince William where the disbanded men of the King's American Dragoons had been sent sufficiently early to finish their log cabins and provisions for passing the winter in comfort. It has commonly been supposed that a party of de Lancey's men under the leadership of Lieut.
Benjamin P. Griffith arrived at Woodstock before the close of the year 1783, but in the absence of any positive evidence on the point thisappears improbable. True, it is barely possible that by prompt and decisive action a party of men might have gathered the necessary supplies and pushed up the river nearly 150 miles before the close of navigation, and then have contrived in some way to exist through the winter, but the undertaking seems such a rash and even perilous one, that thewriter is disposed to think it was not until the spring of 1784 that the actual settlement of Woodstock began.
Very many men from all the loyal American regiments spent their firstwinter at St. John. Some of them drew town lots there and became permanent residents, others removed to their lands up the river the following year. For lack of other accommodation many were forced to live in bark camps and even under canvas tents pitched upon what is now known as the barrack square. These tents were trenched around and covered with spruce brought in the ship's boats from Partridge Island but even then they were a pitiful protection against the biting cold of a New Brunswick winter. Still it was wonderful what the brave hearted foundersof this province endured. The late Hon. John Ward, who died at St. John, Jan. 2nd, 1875, at the advanced age of 92 years, was born in a canvas tent on the barrack square Dec. 18th 1783.
In his little work on New Brunswick history, published in the year 1825, Mr. Peter Fisher (father of ex-Mayor Fisher of Woodstock) speaks of the tribulations endured by the pioneer settlers in the words following, "The privations and sufferings of these people almost exceed belief. The want of food and clothing in a wild, cold country, was not easily dispensed with or soon remedied. Frequently in the piercing cold of winter a part of the family had to remain up during the night to keep fire in their huts to prevent the other part from freezing. Some very destitute families made use of boards to supply the want of bedding; the father or some of the elder children remaining up by turns, andwarming two suitable pieces of boards, which they applied alternatelyto the smaller children to keep warm; with many similar expedients. .. . I have received the above facts with many other expedients, whichwere at that time adopted by the settlers, from persons of undoubted veracity, and who had been eye witness of what they related." Quite a number of officers and men of De Lancey's first and second battalions drew lots in Parrtown, and amongst them were Major Joseph Green, Captain Jacob Smith, Captain Thomas French, Surgeon Nathan Smith, Quarter Master George Everett, Lieut. Benjamin Lester, Ensigns Nicholas E. Old,Ralph Smith, Geo. Brewerton and Henry Ferguson; Sergeants David Newman, Daniel McSherfry, Patrick McNamara, Thomas Fowler and Edward Neil; Corporals Richard Rogers, Thomas Stanley, Jonas Highby; Privates JamesCraig, Daniel Cummings, Lawrence McDonald. Most of their lots were side by side extending along the south side of Britain street from Wentworth street eastward to Canterbury bay and also including adjoining lots on Broad street where the "Old Ladies Home" now stands.
Early in the year 1784 pioneer settlers of Woodstock proceeded to theplace allotted them for settlement. The leader of the party was Lieut. Benjamin P. Griffith -- afterwards Colonel Griffith of the York county militia. He was born in the then province of New York, July 4th, 1754, and the fact that he received a commission as lieutenant in Lt. Col. Stephen de Lancey's company of de Lancey's brigade, when about twenty-three years of age, shows him to have been a young man of spirit and decision. One of the first engagements in which his company saw active service was in repelling an attack made by the Americans on King'sBridge at the head of Manhattan Island, August 22, 1777, where the 2nd de Lancey battalion was then stationed. The "rebels" were beaten off, but the youthful rashness of Lieutenant Griffith led to his being captured by the enemy. He soon after effected his escape or was exchanged and served gallantly through the war including the southern campaign, to which reference has already been made. At the peace in 1783 he came with his company to St. John. Lt. Col. de Lancey who commanded thecompany did not come to the province, having received the appointmentof chief justice of the Bahamas, and governor of Tobago. Lieut. Griffith's influence with his men is seen in the fact that a larger number of his company were grantees at Woodstock than any other company in the brigade, and more of them became actual settlers.
Doubtless the pioneer party found it a difficult task to propel theirheavily laden boat against the strong current of the upper St. John, the navigation of which was then more difficult than now. The Meducticrapids were a much more serious hindrance to navigation than now owing to the occurrence of dangerous rocks in the channel. During the ensuing summer the grant for the de Lancey battalions was surveyed and the lots for the officers and men were drawn in the usual manner, afterwhich the grant was recorded at Halifax.

MEMOIR OF MR. SIMON DELONG
of Hanly Mountain, Nova Scotia
by Rev. J.G. Hennigar
Extracted from "British North American Wesleyan Methodist Magazine, Vol III, 1843" pages 86-89, published in Saint John, N.B., held in United Church Archives, Halifax, N.S.
"The subject of this brief Memoir, Simon DeLong, was born in the State of New York, October 15th, 1761. In 1783 he came to the Province ofNova Scotia, being at that time attached to the 83rd Regiment, commanded by Major Bartley, with which gentleman he resided seven years. Allwe are able to gather in reference to Mr. DeLong's religious sentiments up to this time, amounts to the deplorable fact, that he was much prejudiced against dissenters, Wesleyan Methodists included. In this respect Mr. DeLong's case, we fear, is not a solitary one; and no marvel, for if such agency as a religious press, and men who profess to be the ministers of Christ, be employed, not to "beseech men to be reconciled to God," but to denounce all but themselves (Rome excepted) as schismaticks, and as in gross and deadly error, - what better tone of feeling can be expected, than at what time characterised Mr. DeLong?
"In Mr. DeLong's 31st year, he so far overcame his prejudices, or rather his ignorance and bad feeling, as to attend the ministry of the Rev. Mr. Whitehead, a minister connected with the American Methodists. Under the ministrations of Mr. W. he became deeply awakened; and with anxious desires to flee from the "wrath to come", he eagerly attended the ministry of Rev. William Black; through the preaching of this faithful minister, he was taught to believe and expect the fulfilment of that evangelical sentiment, so frequently expressed, "He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel." As a true penitent, and sincere believer, he was pardoned and absolved. Devoutly could he exclaim,
"My God is reconciled,
His pardoning voice I hear,
He owns me for his child,
I can no longer fear;
With confidence I now draw nigh,
And Father, Abba Father! cry."
"About the time he united himself with the Wesleyan Methodist Societyat Hanly Mountain, and from that day down to the termination of this life, he continued a steadfast and useful member of the church of God.At the commencement of his Religious career, religious persons were very differently situated in reference to the means of grace to what such characters are at the present day. Visits from Christian ministers were but few, and far between; but the zeal of our brother led to suchaction as in part at least made up what in the absence of such zeal and activity would have been a great privation. In connection with his brethren he instituted meetings for prayer, and frequently did he travel from his residence to the Granville Wesleyan Chapel on the holy day, a distance of more than fifteen miles, for the express purpose of hearing the word of life. In adverting to such journeys, frequently hashe assured me that such were some of the most blessed days of his life. On several occasions our Brother DeLong, who, ever after his conversion to God, entertained the most sincere regard for His ministers, accompanied them through the woods to Liverpool, and on other long and difficult journeys. It is also pleasing to record, that his love for his spiritual instructors was not merely manifested as above recorded, but, at all times and under all circumstances, he was always anxious to minister to their necessities.
"After having experienced the love of God, he became a great reader. The Bible was the man of his council, and but few persons, situated ashe was, succeed in gathering such a rich store of valuable information as did our late friend. His acquaintance with the writings of Mr. Wesley and Mr. Fletcher, and his readiness in quoting passages from thewritings of these great men, were alike astonishing; and such information, in connexion with an intimate acquaintance with the Scriptures, was the means of preserving him from that instability and vacillation which too frequently characterise good, but uninformed minds.
"During the month of March previous to his death, it pleased the Lordto bless the services of a protracted meeting, held at Hanley Mountain, in the conversion of many souls. At this time bodily weakness prevented our aged brother from regularly attending the public means of grace, - but his soul was unspeakably happy: his countenance and expressions, while referring to what was going on in the chapel, strongly indicated the strong love he felt for "Zion". He could exclaim, "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour."
"As the revival at the Mountain became more extensive, - from the cheering reports he heard of special manifestations of Divine goodness inour chapel, - he could no longer remain exiled even by affliction from the house of his God; strong in the Lord, he rose superior to bodily weakness - he rode to the chapel, and there, while listening to theexperience of new born souls, while he gazed with admiration upon those so recently raised up to become pillars in the house of God, if even the language of good old Simeon was applicable to any other mortal it was to himself. His looks, his feelings, and prospects, all were indicative of that devout aspiration - "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word, for mine eyes have seen thysalvation." As another proof of the Divine favour shown to our late friend, the Lord enabled him to minister at the family alter, until hisnephew, who resided with him, was converted to God, and thus enabled to succeed his declining uncle in ministering at the family alter. Hiswife, "who was in Christ before him", previous to his conversion, hadwatched over him with anxiety for his best, his eternal interests, and after his union with Christ, they with increasing happiness were devoted to the Lord. And though he has for a little left his companion and friend, she hastens to meet him in blissful eternity.
"As the closing scene of Mr. DeLong's life drew near, his hope in Godcontinued unshaken; and, although very weak, he strove to the last toassert the confidence of his departing spirit. In reply to one, but ashort time before consciousness left him, he exclaimed, "Most home"; soon after this, his deathless spirit, disenthralled from the shacklesof mortality, fled to the Home of the Blest.
"Reference has already been made to our now sainted brother's respectand love for his Ministers; he loved them because he regarded them asthe Ministers of Christ. Thus estimating his spiritual instructors, he acted accordingly; he cheerfully entertained them, and to the utmost of his means, ever after his conversion to God, felt pleasure in contributing to their support. For several years he faithfully discharged the duties of a Society steward at Hanly Mountain, and when engagedin this labour of love, his spirit was at times stirred within him, in witnessing the meanness manifested, the niggardly offerings presented by some persons, and at times by professors of religion, to the cause of the Eternal God. In case the eyes of any of our departed brother's successors in office as Circuit Stewards should meet this page, whohave had to lament the same glaring improprieties, let them, like brother DeLong, faithfully reprove and exhort such characters to be candid, in either denying the validity of the Ministerial office, or in cheerfully supporting those who labour for their eternal welfare."
