Notes
General:
Many of Seth Severance's descendants will not agree that this Ephraim Severance is Seth's father.
My reasons for including him are:
1. Death Certificate for Seth's son, George Edward Severance, lists Seth's place of birth as Dexter. The informant was , George's wife, Flora Chubbuck Severance. She was born in 1868 and may have known Seth Severance.
2. The 1820 Census lists Ephraim Severance in Dexter/ Dover Maine.
The 1850 Census lists Ephraim and wife Jamina living in Kilmarnock, near Dexter.
3. Seth and Maria Sweet Severance;s last child was named Jamina Severance. She was called "Jennie"
Flora Chubbuck Severance told Lucille Severance Carroll that Seth's father came from NH to Maine. She said he came with a brother. The Above Ephraim Severance was born in Bradford Center , NH, son of Abel Severance and Martha Bruce.

Continued from John Severans' notes, article by Aaron E. Severance:
The Schooner Elizabeth made several voyages to America. The records ofBoston show that this ship brought a cargo of emigrants from Ispwich,Eng., & John Severans was in command of them. We don not know whyAbigail did not accompany her parents to Boston. It may be that shehad already met & married a young Englishman by the name of JohnSeverans. We cannot discover from the records how it came about thatJohn Severans, whose ancestors had been land owners in Western Eng.,for generations, & who was born in Worcester Co., became acquaintedwith & married a girl on the East coast of Eng. It is only fair toconjecture that he arrived at Ipswich by sea. He was a seaman of nomean ability, & understood the principles of navigation. The Bostonrecords record the return of the Schooner Elizabeth in 1637. Among thepassengers John Severans & his wife, Abigail Kimball Severans ofIpswich, Eng.
Records do not tell us much of the financial circumstances of John &Abigail Severans when they arrived in Boston; but the did bring 2 cowswith them, which was an expensive undertaking in that day. They spentthe first winter of 1637 in Boston at the home of one of Abigail’suncles, probably Robert Scott, who was already established in themercantile business. After a few months stay, the pushed on toIpswich, MA., & remained with Abigail’s parents until the spring of1639. The they set out, with a group of colonists to found the town ofSalisbury, the first settlement north of the Merrimac River. AtSalisbury they were awarded lots & acreage, & John was listed in thetown register as Vinter & Vitalizer.
The name has been spelled in various ways in the public records, fromSeverans to Syverens to Seaverns. Finally, John’s son, Ephriam, started spelling it Severance, & so it has remained very since. All ofthe Severance’s in America can probably trace their ancestry back toJohn, & through him to the Severan’s of Ipswich & Shrawley, Eng.
Information compiled by Harland C. Severance:
The story of the SEVERANCE’S in America begins with John Severance whoevidently emigrated to New England from Ipswich, Eng. some time beforethe yr. 1637. The earliest record that I have been able to find was ofa “John Syverins” who was made a “freeman” [that is, a voting citizen& a member of the church] in Mar. 1637. This is found in MA. ColonialArchives for the town of Salisbury. According to the stories, he, hiswife & an unmarried brother were some of the first settlers there, infact, John is listed as one of the founding fathers of Salisbury. Heis supposed to have settled in Boston first, so the actual date of hiscoming to America must have been some time previous to this. However, according to the records, he as married to Abigail Kimball in Ipswich,Eng. in the yr. 1635. Later, there is recorded in MassachusettsColonial History that “John Severans, Vinter” sold 2 acres of raw landto Ebenezer Cottle in the year 1660.
I have never been able to find any reference to the brother who issupposed to have emigrated with John. Either he did not exist orpossibly he didn’t live long after coming to the New World, & he nevermarried. So, quite evidently, all of the Severance’s here today, ofwhom there are some 2000 families, are all descended from John. He had10 children, of whom 6 were living in 1667. Of these, 4 were boys,Samuel, Ebenezer, Benjamin, & Ephraim. Evidently, John & Joseph diedyoung. Our line come down through Eprhaim. Some of the otherSeverance’s such as Louis Henry Severance, the industrialist &philanthropist of Cleveland, OH., who founded the Severance Hospitalin Seoul, Korea & endowed the Art Museum in Cleveland; ArnoldSeverance, the judge in MN.; & ________Severance, the railroad magnate& fruit grower of CA., for whom the old Severance building at 6th &Main in Los Angeles was named; are all descended from other sons ofJohn.
There are at least 30 Severance’s listed in the Revolutionary Army &the New England Militia. The letter from Samuel Severance, copiedbelow, may not have been in the line from Ephraim, but from on of hisbrothers. However, Ephraim Severance, Private, Jeremiah Gilson’s Co.,Col. John Nixon’s 5th Regiment, is probably our ancestor. He was fromKingston, NH as was our ancestor, Ephraim 3rd, born in 1749 the greatgrandfather of Sargent Jewell Severance. Some of the other Severance’swere the first inhabitants of Washington, NH, when it was a thrivingagricultural community, & the first town in the country to be namedafter George Washington. This town is now very small, & is known asthe “birthplace of the Seventh Day Adventist Church” as theWashington, NH church was the first Millerite church to adopt theseventh day Sabbath.
Here is a copy of a letter that E. George Adams writes: “SamuelSeverance , the writer of the following letter, was a native ofKingston, NH. He enlisted in the Revolutionary Army, & served about 3mo. He was in the battle of Bunker Hill, & brought home a small stone, which is now in the possession of my wife’s family, as a memorial ofthat eventful day. The letter is addressed from Medford to his wife inKingston. Her maiden name was Hannah Winslow. I have retained thespelling--I will relate a little incident to relate the --privation ofthose times, when the postman came around to convey letters from theinhabitants of Kingston, --to the soldiers in the service; Mrs.Severance sent her husband some green bean, with a piece of pork tocook with them & some Indian meal to make him a pudding; while hislittle daughter, 6 yr. old, picked him a pint of berries to put in it;which he gratefully received; while the soldiers stood looking on withtears in their eyes, wishing they had a wife or children to send thema like present. Mr. Severance was taken sick with camp disease & hadto return home. When he returned home he was so haggard & pale, &changed, that his daughter, in her fright at the singular looks of astranger, as she deemed him, fled, & hid herself behind the door. Iwould state that though the spelling of the following letter is poor, the penmanship is very creditable.”

Notes
General:
"The root of the name is Se-ver from which came the various modifications, Severin, Severinus, Severns, Severans, Severens, Severeans, Severance. The first man to bear the name so far discovered, was the father of Lucius Septimus Severus, born 146 A.D. at Sepsis, an African coast town. He was a Roman citizen and spoke the Punic tongue. Many Roman families carried the name, - a poet under Augustus; an orator under Tiberius; the emperor Septimus Severus, and others. The Gregorian calendar names a Saint Severin. A church founded in mediaeval Paris carries the name Saint Severin. The mediaeval outer walls of cologne, Germany has some very fine gate towers one of which opens upon Severins Street, a main thoroughfare at the head of which stands the Saint Severins church, where Saint Severins, a learned and a prominent bishop officiated for many years. There was also a John Severans in Germany in 1580. Marcus Aurelius Severins born 1589 was a distinguished physician who at the age of twenty-five was elected to the Chair of Anatomy and Medicine in the University of Medicine in Paris. He soon became Surgeon in Chief of La Hospitale Incurables. Pierre Severinus was a noted Danish physician who received the title of doctor of Medicine from the King on his return from the study of medicine in Paris."
"There are many Severin families in France. Rachel Severin, Foutet, France, wrote me that a noted agriculturist and beet sugar specialist lives in the Aisne department and that there were many landowners and landworkers in the valley of the Garoone near the Pyrenees Mountains by the name Severin and that several districts of France and many families carry the name Severac."
"In England, we probably find our direct ancestors. There is a record in Burke's Landed Gentry, page 1247, stating that "there are ancient and broken records tracing the ancestry of the Severans of Shrawley to a remote period." John Severans of Shrawley had a son, Thomas, of Broadway and Powick, who married Mary, daughter of Richard Langley. He begat three daughters and two sons, one of which died unmarried. The other, the youngest son, named John, was probably the patriarch of the Severances in America, although there is no positive proof of it. Our record, therefore, begins with John Severans of Ipswich, England, who was in Boston in 1637, a freeman, and a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery in 1640. He was one of the founders of Salisbury, Massachusetts. His name appears in the list of names of men to whom lots and acreage's were assigned in 1639. He was a "prudential Man" (Selectman) often put in charge of public trusts of various kinds, of which "there can be no better evidence of a faithful discharge of the duties so imposed upon him; all of which proves that he was a man of sterling integrity and especially fitted for the various trusts placed in his hands."
